It had been the most glorious homecoming after a very long sailing, they had let go at the pub and all had hangovers galore. He had woken up miraculously in a coil of rope on board the Sea Wasp Kechiri must have gotten him aboard somehow. She was truly her mother's daughter always looking after her uncle. He hoped one day to have cool kids like her. He just had no idea when that would happen. He wasn't exactly swimming in dates at the moment.
Well, no help for it now. He yawned and stretched and went about his morning. One of the crew mates looked at him with a furrowed brow and said nothing that was odd. Wasn't it? Kellye rubbed his chin. Did he have something on his face? Maybe? He went into Kechiri's cabin where he was permitted to use the mirror. His eyes widened and he touched the crystals on his face with all they were an entirely different blue than they had been. They were deep and dark and mysterious and beautiful, as opposed to his old misty fog colored crystals. This must be one of those tree effects he had heard rumors about. He hadn't put much store by it until now. Either that or they had drunk some magical ales last night, he doubted it though. Poisoned ale? Maybe, they were pirates after all, fishing was a lot safer, but this had thrills and loot. Loot was kind of nice, really. Something stolen from a thief was pretty clean by that point, if done right, by his reckoning. Not like they could return whatever it was back to their original owner either half a world away. He did love maritime law as it currently was. In that they only did piratey things to pirates and were mostly left alone, except by other pirates. They were aggressive. This and Kechiri's little brother had also gotten a ship and was on patrol now too. Now they had competition and this drove their captain mad that her brother would edge in her kill list. How dare he stomp on her toes like this blah blah blah. Sometimes Kellye tuned her out because it was her white hot rage that was actually talking. She was a great captain when calm so they put up with the occasional tantrum. He would show her a tantrum today if she tried anything though, likely she was just as hungover as the rest of them. He wondered if any other crew members had changed. If not, would they be weirded out by him?
Sailors could be so very close minded sometimes. Not that many fishermen were much different. Oh, well. He was glad he got some traveling in before. It helped change perspective essential for long times at sea far out on the blue you only had the materials you had and your own ingenuity. It was what separated the newbies from the seasoned salts. His crystals were on his face and that was hard to cover up. Oh well. He liked the new color. Hopefully the rest of the crew would not notice or care. He still worked just as hard after all. He sighed and emerged on deck. To his surprise a few others has also had a similar thing happened. It affected crystal skin hair and eyes. It was unprecedented, crystals and eye color occasionally had rare potion that could change them. Though they were quite rare he had never seen one in all of his many travels. He had been around. His head hurt and no one else was much better. It was to be another rest day though they would probably drink just as hard tonight and have the same regrets tomorrow. He might not though he had always been somewhat at war with the balance of drinking. The hangover rarely seemed worth it the next day they ate a leisurely luxury breakfast. Well, those that could anyway some of them turned green at the smell and promptly had to leave the area at least they tossed their cookies. He was able to eat and drink some water. He felt mildly better after, though he felt they would all be better, rather useless today. He hated that feeling of being trapped or limited by something he could have easily prevented. Yeah, he wouldn't drink tonight he wanted to do something instead. He wanted to go on an island jaunt. Maybe Jouhar would be cool. He could get used to new crystal colors and new place. All that day. He couldn't help but touch them wonder at the pretty color and wonder if they would ever turn back. He would miss the ones the old ones but at least they hadn't dropped off or something. Now that would have truly been traumatizing. Most people had crystals though the Asians, water folk and kahikinians lacked them. And geians though the lightning and yaeli tribes had them, though in strange colors.
