He awoke to another glorious morning on the ranch. It was still black as pitch out at the moment and he wondered what had woken him up. Usually he woke up when the first light touched the sky weather he wanted to or not.
He sighed and snuggled closer to Saeruin, shaking off whatever weird feeling had gotten to him. She was his constant, perhaps it had simply been a nightmare, he was still plagued with them. Though they were slowly getting better with the retrieval of his poor daughter.
He tucked his face into Sae's neck, exhaled and tried to fall back asleep. Whatever it was could wait until tomorrow if it had happened to be anything at all.
Little did he know about the drama to come on the morrow. He did eventually fall back asleep. Lulled by the peace and safety of his wooden home.

She was disturbed by her mate as he awoke alertly from something she had not heard or sensed. Such was living with a ranger type, keen senses, even passed out sometimes. She had her own keeness but it was different in some ways than his.
She reached back and placed a warm hand on his thigh, a gesture he found quite comforting and she felt when he finally drifted off to sleep again. She smiled and settled back into his warmth to seek her own shut eye before another fruitful day at her forge. Though she was due for a vacation soon, she had been putting in all of the hours and she deserved it.
Maybe she would talk to Ushi about it in the morning before chores. Yeah that was what she would do. She yawned and drifted off. as well.
Morning came and oddly Ushi was still in bed when she woke to the full dawn light. She prodded him, are you okay love?'

"Hmm?" Oh it seemed as though he had overslept somewhat. That was a bit strange, perhaps he was getting a cold? Though he very rarely got sick. He shrugged and sprang out of bed to start the day, the critters would be hungry...he squinted.
"Did uh, did we get new hair soap? Is it the day of jokes and perhaps our children pranked me but ... my hair..is as dark as yours." He looked up at her. Poor torture on his face. He held it up to her. "MY HAIR."
If he was proud of one thing, it was of his glorious mane of hair! "Haha, funny joke KECHIRI, you can come out now, I expect this from you at your brother but me? GAH. Have kids they said, it will be fun they said." He made yack motions with his hand and mouth mocking those people.
"MY HAIR!"

Well the good news was that her mate wasn't dying, she didn't think, but, someone else might, the world better hope whoever had died his hair was related or they might not survive this.
She bestirred from the blanket to look at him and grinned. "It looks so good on you though! So dashing." She winked, hoping to lesson the guilty parties sentence with buttering up the executioner.
She too got up to go hug him, but noticed something strange in the floor length mirror when she went past.
"Uh, my crystals...got way darker? Shampoo doesn't do that." She stared at him, now just as freaked out. "I don't think this was Kechiri..did we get..a spell put on us? You find any old witches in cabins out there lately? Did you eat a croissant?"
Witches could be tricksy folk, and sometimes wild magic was quite hard to predict. She squinted at her mate. Though she couldn't imagine what he would possibly want with a witch visit for magic anyway, he didn't seem all that fussed about any magic except that bit which he had been gifted with that worked better when Ein was around anyway.

Her crystals and his hair. He dressed in a swift flurry of movement, muttering and grumbling the whole time. Shrieks and cries rose from the rest of the property so he supposed they might not be the only one waking up to colorful surprises. The kids did not seem to be home at the moment, they were used to freely roaming to whichever house they wanted especially if it was the main house.
Well at least he wouldn't have to berate his daughter if it was not a prank. Funny how he never thought of Ushiruin as a prank culprit, like Thal he was much too chill for that sort of thing. Not like Kechiri, who was a mud disturber in general. A chip off the old block but it was usually not pointed at him.
"Let us find out what is going on woman." He waggled his eyebrows at Sae. Then he took a good look at her crystals. Definitely darker than they had been the day before. "What happned to us?" He asked desperately, hoping against hope that she somehow had an answer.

She fingered his hair, it still felt soft and healthy like it normally did, but it was her exact same shade of color. "What strange magic this is, how did it know?" Weird, coincidences only went so far. "I wonder how many others it affected, I thought I heard more yelling."
"Can you imagine if it affects Nye or Kechiri? The drama!" Though Ushiwa himself wasn't that far behind them for vanity. He knew he was pretty. She smirked.
She got dressed as well and they went to eat a quick breakfast before finding out what in the holy heck was going on. This was jarring and she felt like they had quite been through enough nonsense thank you very much. The quicker they figured it out the quicker they could get everything back to normal and she would have no trouble sleeping at night wondering if fate would steal her children again. She still had nightmares of the day Elaxi was stolen and the woman stolen didn't neccessarily end up being her always, sometimes it was her other children or nieces, nephews or other family members. And always she was restricted by dream blood loss. That she had made it to the ranch had been impressive.

After eating they headed out and indeed many, many others had been affected by the color changes. According to the healers and some authorities on the subject it was a magical by blow of the two younger Aishan trees blooming. They were now able to have hybrids which was wonderful for progressions sake and for building a more unified, stronger tendaji but...why did it have to mess with his hair and Sae's crystals. Not everyone had been affected but some people had had a lot more change than they had.
Some people had crystals, skin, eyes and hair change. It was like waking up as someone else he supposed while still having all your memories and scars and the same haircut and crystal placement.
"What have the trees done to us Sae?" He was still quite stressed out, he was used to dealing with physical threats not semi harmless magical ones that he could not fight or control or really do anything against. He sighed.

"Maybe they see it as a gift somehow, I don't know for sure my love, this sort of magic is beyond us and our family..at least right now." She said, one might never know when there would be a magic wielder born in a family as quite often it took a long time for them to develop their magic. Some people had magic but never used it. She prefferred to beat stuff the old fashioned way with a hammer instead of magicing it into being.
She put an arm around her mate. He was not all that great with change, especially abrupt, hard to explain, magical aishan tree changes. On a level she couldn't blame him. On another she was grateful they were not turned into lizard people so...perspective definitely mattered.
"I don't know how to fix it Ushi, I don't know if it can be fixed. But your hair and my crystals are growing on me, we should be happy we didn't get turned into spitorogs."

"A gift?" He supposed he could sort of see that. But he very much didn't want to, he very much wanted to have a hissy fit and rage against the world but this was much better than most of the stuff that had happened to their family over the years. It was always pretty dramatic.
He looked around at the people who were also panicing, people who had had a lot more changed on them.
Hair at least could be dyed. He couldn't do that with his eyes or skin or crystals so he sighed again.
"I'm still mad. Don't look at me like that." He scowled. Though he had calmed down somewhat. "Do you think Mom or Dad would know anything? Probably not."
"Where are the children Sae? Did they change too?" What if their whole family had things change? Would they recognize them? What was the world coming to when trees changed your hair color?

"I think Kechiri is at sail, Ushiruin might be with her. Daanu is somewhere on the ranch and I'm not sure where Elaxi it but I'm pretty sure she will have at least one family member attending her." She usually had a decent idea of where the children were even if they did tend to move around quite a lot.
A family full of ranger blood was bound to wander a bit in her estimation. She began to miss the safety and familiarity of her forge. Safe being a relative term as she did work with cherry hot metal, molten iron and inumberable heavy blunt objects. It felt safe. She knew how to keep safe and it was entirely under her control unlike their current chaotic situation.
"I'm sure if they did change they will be beating down our door asking for answers. Not much of which can we give them."
She wondered how many had been affected and how many had enjoyed their change. It was just shocking to have unexpected things like that happen overnight. Though people were sluffing skin too to reveal new colors so they had gotten lucky again she reckoned.

They checked in with a healer and their suspicions were concerned, it was a harmless change from the mother trees. This did make him feel a little bit better. He was too agitated to go home so he dragged Saeruin to the market instead and they shopped until they dropped. Mostly for supplies and stuff but he did get her a pair of earrings that he bought and smuggled home without her knowing, he would give them to her for her birthday later. They had been too perfect for her to let someone else by them in the little bit it would have taken him to sneak back to the market.
At the very least the day had not been wasted. He knew he was not going to feel 'normal' for a very long time but at least he still had his family around as support.
He wrapped an arm around Sae while the other hand held the Quhar cart lead. They had gotten enough basics that the ranch should be set for a while. It was his instinct when things started getting weird to stock up.

She had greatly enjoyed the shopping. She and Ushi often didn't have the time to do it together and they had saved the rest of the family a great deal of trouble. She was sure that Kiyelt and Nin would be gratified to see the big ol cart rumbling down the road with enough food to feed them over winter..at least the basics the fresh stuff would have to come from the market or the garden if it was in season.
She trudged along beside the cart. It seemed as though they only ever had a few years of relative peace before the world tried to throw something else at them.
Maybe she should think about retiring and just enjoying her family, but she loved the forge, loved the power over flames and through their power, power over metal that was stronger than blood and bone. She would return to the forge tomorrow.
The journey went well enough, this day would be for processing and rest. It wasn't everyday something on your body just changed.

Soon enough they were home and they put the stuff in storage before the pair of them walked about the ranch. Checking on the animals that they had left for not all that long. But it was a twitch reaction. Something could happen and it was best to catch most things quickly before stuff went down hill.
Once every critter was checked he dragged Sae to the main house to see about a long family talk about the matter. That and he was ready for a coffee. There had just been a bit too much going on today for his liking. Nothing like mass public upset to make you crave the caffeine besides for the kind of family talk to follow he would need the extra boost in brain power. He was one of the best at talking and making arguments.
He wanted especially to talk with his sister who had been unavailable when they had left for town that morning. Her profession inevitably took her to where it needed her the most and he understood that. She would be back soon enough and he would squeeze all the comfort from her that he could get.

She felt better having accomplished something and now they were home where they could start to discuss the issue amongst themselves. She wasn't too disturbed. She liked the new color of her crystals as well as Ushi's new hair.
She seemed to handle change better than her mate. He was a control freak and she was only like that at her work. Mostly she let stuff unfold organically in her life.
They got coffee for Ushi and she had a tea, she didn't think she needed all the extra caffeine. She took out a pocket book and sat down to read while Ushi paced around the big house waiting for family members to pounce and irritate later.
Perhaps others would have seen the changes. Perhaps they had better outlooks on it. She hoped so. She hoped that only good came out of this tree pollen debacle.
Then she could go back to her forge and her metal and continue to ply her craft, raise her family and survive.
