What does it mean to human? Ethe could not shake that question from their fur. It activated both of their minds. It made their tail shake. They had met, since awakening as a youma, two humans and two half-humans. In fact, they had been human. Once. But they couldn’t remember it now. Still, those they had met had not been all bad. In fact, only the general that had changed them into a youma had been bad. They were the only one who had looked at them with cruelty. They were the only one that looked at them with disgust. They were the only one who looked at them with fear. They had called Ethe bad. But they’d were wrong. They had to be. If not, how could they hold their heads up high and have pride in being youma? Being youma was who they were now. They could not dislike it. They could not think it was wrong. It could not be bad. But what would a human of Earth think of them? What would a human seen in them? Would they see something wrong? Something bad? Would they see them as a monster? Or would they see them as a dog, which they were told they resemble? As they teleported to Earth, they found that, instead of Destiny City, they had materialized on its outskirts. They could still see the lights of the city, but they were far off. Here, it was much wilder and more natural. They picked up a scent on the wind that was nothing like would they would find closer to civilization. They followed the scent with both noses to the ground… until they came upon a cave. There was something faintly glowing inside. Without much thought, they wandered inside. What ever was in there smelled delicious! ✧

Any place that had been claimed from the humans by nature was a place that Naeria was interested in, and weak fences did little to keep her out. She'd never wrapped her head around concepts of property, especially when it came to land. It was so strange that the humans thought that they could own places. And so, she easily slipped past the broken fence and deeper into the crumbling cave, taking a deep breath of cool, wet air. Something here seemed just a little different than other caves she'd been in, and careful to keep her balance, she took a few steps forwards, curious as to what she would find. There was something glowing in the distance. She could see that, and she could see that they looked round like mushroom caps. Her jaw dropped at the sight of it. For the first few months of being here, she'd found new species constantly, but she was at the point that she hadn't seen one in ages. This was a discovery! Only, she wasn't the only one to discover it. There was another creature here, something that a quick glance at her ComTech revealed to be a youma, and just as quickly as it had come, all that enthusiasm was gone and her brows were knitting together in worry. Chaos made her skin crawl. She never knew what to make of it, but she also didn't want to leave.

If they had remembered what a cemetery was, they would have known that they had gone through one. But they were so focused on the scent that they had hardly noticed. Ethe sniffed the mushroom. It was glowing. But that did not phase them. Neither did the strange colors. Or the odd location. All things that should turn one off from interacting with the fungi. Much less eating it. No. None of that did. They opened the left mouth and devoured it. Ethe was a glutton. “That tastes strange!”A glutton for punishment, apparently. Their left head did not know what to do. The mushroom tasted so odd. Not at all like it smelled! Then they felt a presence enter the cave. “Who are you?”✧

Naeria herself wasn't going to eat a strange new species of fungus without extensive research and testing, but if a youma was going to try it on their own and give her an unprompted anecdotal qualitative review, Naeria was more than willing to take that information down. She pulled up the hologram screen of her ComTech and typed out Unknown Fungus and then Flavor: StrangeHopefully it wasn't going to be the last thing that she saw before she got eaten. It looked like she'd been seen. "Naeria," she squeaked, very softly, when asked who she was. There was something she could have said about the Vanguard. Lyndin had an alliance with the Negaverse. She knew that. She knew it might have helped her in this situation, but she wasn't sure she would be able to explain the details, and the words right now were not coming easily from her mouth anyway. She swallowed. "A scientist," she managed. She had the drug gun if she needed it.

Ethe tried to sense their aura, but it was not something they had ever felt before. It was as strange as the mushroom they had just eaten. It was something they could not place. Was this friend or foe? “What are you?”The started to walk towards Naeria, sniffing the air. ✧

Oh. They could speak. It looked like a dog, though, and Naeria had done enough research to know to hold her hand out when they started sniffing. She'd said she was a scientist, but that wasn't the right answer. She put her ComTech away. "An alien," she tried. She wasn't used to the word but it was probably the easiest way to explain.

The aura was still puzzling. Still something they did not know. But they didn’t seem threatening. They weren’t preparing an attack. They didn’t even look scared. They just held out their hand. Ethe supposed they could bite. There was nothing stopping them. But they’d had been told it was quite rude to bite. And this person had not been mean to them. Yet. “Alien? So you are not from Earth. We are youma. We do not come from here, either.”Ethe sniffed her hand, touching it with their cold, wet nose. ✧

She had not been expecting to find out that she had something in common with a youma, but Earth, she was discovering, was full of surprises. The youma did not bite her, which was good. She would take any advantage that she could of the fact that the Vanguard had a tentative alliance with the Negaverse, even though she did not personally trust them. "Where are you from?" she asked, because she did not know. As she asked, she did not look at them, but instead took a few steps forwards towards the strange and beautiful glowing mushrooms.

Ethe contemplated biting her again, but then decided against it. They still could not place the aura. What if she tasted bad just like the mushroom? “We are from the Rift. Only youma live there.” Ethe answered, not seeing a reason not to tell her. “Where are you from?”✧

"From Velencya," she said. "It is another world." She looked back towards the youma. The Rift sounded vaguely familiar. She wondered if that was the pocket dimension where Lyndin worked sometimes, and where she had seen the Negaverse's Queen. Glancing back at the youma, she saw that they did not appear to be suffering any adverse affects from what they had just eaten. "Did the mushroom taste good?" she asked.

“Velencya. You are Vanguard then.” Ethe pondered the fact that there were other worlds they did not know about. They knew Earth, Negaspace and the worlds of senshi. Metallia wanted senshi worlds for her own and, of course, Earth was contested territory. The youma had only heard of them, but Naeria was the first they had ever met.l “No. It tasted terrible. And Ethe likes everything they eat. But not that. Would not eat if I were you.”✧

"I am Vanguard, yes," said Naeria, a small ripple of relief moving through her body at the fact that they youma understood that, and was still not moving to bite or attack her. Although, she still saw the wild look in their eye and wasn't sure how long she wanted to be in their proximity. "I will not eat one then," she said. That was not a promise, but she would wait until she had more evidence that it was not dangerous. "I will just take one for my research." She pulled one from the dirt and began to slowly back away.

Ethe watched as Naeria took a mushroom. Hadn’t they just said it did not taste good? “Not sure what they are good for if not for eating.”As far as the youma was concerned, if it tasted bad, it was not good for anything. It appeared she wasn’t going to eat it. So at least she wasn’t hardheaded. Ethe could get away with being a little hardheaded. But that was because they had two heads. Wouldn’t want to try your luck with just one. “You can have them.”Ethe gave her a weird look and then headed back out the cave the way they came. ✧
