~~~~~ Up To PrenticeWhat happens when two childhood friends become bored? Well, it's only logical that they would go see the world together, right?
Valu and Keola grew up together, being next door neighbors for most of their life. They were instantly drawn to each other as is expected when another child your own age is so conveniently close and would spend much of their time playing outdoors. They explored the area of their village as much as they were allowed, slowly venturing out further and further as they aged. They added in other kids to their group, until they had a large group of friends to rely on in times of need or joy. They would terrorize the adults with their pranks and give their parents panic attacks with how far they'd try to push their boundaries. They wanted to see what else was around the village, they'd plead. They could have accurately, and with much detail, draw out a map of the village for any stranger in a matter of seconds. They needed new places to explore. So it's only natural they both would eventually leave. No matter how large their group of friends grew, Vau and Keola remained the best of friends, preferring each other over the other children every time. As they started to enter their teen years, they hatched a plan together to build themselves a boat and go explore the other lands when they were finally old enough to do as they pleased without their parents looking over their shoulders.
And that's just what they did. Just the two of them, packed and ready, got into the boat they had been hand-crafting for years, to set sail for distant lands. They started with the rest of Kahikinan, seeing everything that they could in their own backyards before upgrading their boat into something more able to travel across the ocean to visit Yael, Belrae, and Tendaji. Not particularly in that order. Over the time of their exploration, the usual occurrence that happens when two best friends go sight-seeing together descended upon them: They fell in love. Now exploring all over the known world together had a whole new meaning to the pair. Until one of them became pregnant. As quickly as they could, they rushed back home to have their first child and raise her in a more secure and safe place than the wooden floor of a large boat or the flimsy safety of a tent flap. As soon as Auli'i was old enough, they were back on the ocean, this time as a trio. However, after a while of dragging a child around with them, the two began to wonder if this was a healthy life for a youngling to grow up in. She could never begin to make a strong friendship like they had if they kept taking her away to the next destination, forcing her to start all over again with a new set of strangers. They decided they would pick somewhere for her to grow up in, to find her own feet in. If she decided when she was older to join them on more adventures, than they would once more be off as a family unit. If she didn't, well...They were prepared to sacrifice as many years as needed to stay with her until she was confident on her own feet and with her own life. For now, Auli'i seems content to remain where she is, in her home beside the sea in Matori. ~~~~~
