It was starting to get chilly at night and thank goodness for that as far as Halle was concerned. Pulling out a pair of dark sweats from his pocketspace, he put them on over his pastel beacon of a uniform and shoved his feather hat into the space. "I already got our last gym records out of mom's office. If we're stronger now, we need to know exactly how strong she meant. And in what ways."

A couple bottles of gatorade, a stop watch, and a clipboard all appeared in quick succession. Someone was clearly already enjoying at least one perk of their new....condition.

They were on the track field of the nearby middle school, a school that was currently closed due to reconstruction. Halle felt it was pretty ideal for their current needs, and it was thankfully empty. No security personnel in sight.

Lisse stared at his brother in disbelief and some annoyance. “So…you’re saying that we’re going to figure out how strong we are by like…running? What is this, gym class? You know I despise everything about gym class…I’m happy to time you though, if that’s your plan, and if it is, good. Go off bro.”

He knew that he wouldn’t be running around. Not in these shoes. He would end up falling over for sure…and that just wasn’t worth it. “Ja…Halle...do you really think this is the best way to test things out? Like, shouldn’t we do something else like…go find a monster or something? Maybe call that lady?”

…Honestly, if they were going to pursue this…having someone who actually knew what was going on might be helpful.

Giving his brother a dry look, Halle drawled, "Yeah, it's way smarter to just throw ourselves at a monster in a state of total ignorance. "We'll call her when we're more ready to fight something, okay?"

He gave a gusty sigh and handed his brother the timer and clipboard. "Right now we don't even have any idea of what our base stats are here, and that's a big problem. I'll need you to do some of this too, Lisse." Man, it was so weird to use these names. "We should know if we have the same strength and speed as one another. Like..." he rolled his shoulders before beginning a series of stretches, "...just do the 100 meter dash. If ours are different, we can assume we have a difference across the board, okay?"

---

Five minutes later and he was at the starting line, fingers brushing the track, ready for Lisse's shout from his place by the "finish line" made up of orange cones.

This was absolutely stupid and pointless, and Lisse had half a mind to figure out just how to go up to his Wonder and leave his brother here to run his stupid races alone. Sure, maybe that was something rude to do but…

It would kind of be funny too, if he didn’t end up getting smacked after…

And providing he could get off of his Wonder place alone…that…

Yeah okay that was an issue that he didn’t really want to deal with. So instead, the Page gave a heavy sigh and drew in a deep breath before shouting for his brother to, “Go!”

The sooner this experiment was done, the sooner he could stop having to worry about gym class…

Halle nearly fell at the start form the sudden, unfamiliar speed of his body. It felt like basically nothing and then he was crossing the finish and huddling up next to his brother, to look at his time. "Holy...that was..."

Squinting at the results, breath even like he hadn't run at all, Halle gave a wolfish grin. The sort that meant someone's life was going to be hell soon, and they'd never see it coming. "That's twice as fast as my old time, Lisse."

Not too long later and he was the one with the clipboard, coaxing his brother, "Come on. It's hardly any effort, and just this once, okay? I'll get you something at that comic book shop. A figure or something." He paused, and then amended, "Nothing over thirty bucks, though."

See his brother at the ready, Halle shouted GO! and clicked the stopwatch.

Lisse hated this, he really did but, the allure of a new figure…well, that was worth sprinting for. And to his utter surprise…it wasn’t…

Well. It wasn’t bad. Not that he would ever even consider taking up running for pleasure or fun or…exercise or anything but…

“Oh. Yeah, wow that…wasn’t as bad as gym class at all…I guess she wasn’t lying about the strength or whatever…and we did see her like, literally scale a building with no effort at all…do you want to test how our jumping is maybe?”

It sounded a little silly but…if they could like…jump up onto a building too…that…

He paused and squinted around the track before pointing at the supply shed. “Let’s try jumping up there? I’ll race you!”

He would lose the race but…maybe it wouldn’t be quite as bad.

Trying not to smile too smugly at Lisse's newfound enthusiasm, Halle gave the other a head start, jotting down the time first. The point was collecting data, afterall! But he still caught up to his brother enough so that both of them were leaping at the same time. And it felt...small.

Arms crossing, he surveryed their surroundings, eye moving toward the school building. Normally the more cautious of the two, he didn't think twice when jerking his chin toward it. "Let's go higher. The school roof!"

And when they were both looking down from on high, he couldn't help a little laugh, "Everything feels like...feels like a playground now." He knew there were serious things looming but this was just, fun.

Lisse nodded. “I didn’t think…I mean. It sounds stupid but. I kind of feel like a super hero…which I suppose is the point but…I guess…I guess it’s not so bad. If we can just do s**t like this, I think I’d be okay, but the idea of like, fighting things? That sounds terrifying but…having our own personal city playground…I could deal with this.”

And he could. But if they had to start fighting monsters or like, bad things or…anything that the woman had described…that.

That would take some more time.

“Was this all you wanted to do tonight? Jump around and prove that we’re…we’ve got abilities? Cause, I think your point has been proved.”

Pulling the clipboard out of his pocket space again, Halle rolled his eyes. "Nice try. Let's go down to the construction area, there's some things i want data on."

Arm strength for one, which had him lifting an increasing pile of 20 pound sandbags, and, when he didn't see any cameras nearby, switching back to normal and lifting as much as he could while normal. Peering over Lisse's shoulder he gave a little frown. "The strength increase is definitely smaller than the speed increase. Don't try beating up the football team or anything." At least not directly.

Rope climbing followed. And then it was back to the track for a long distance run that tried both his endurance and his brother's patience. Collapsing on the bleachers next to Lisse, sweaty and gross and pleased with himself, Hall finally relented, "Okay I think....I think that's good for tonight. I'm gonna do the math, set up a training schedule, and test again a month from now. See if it makes a difference."

He turned his head to get a good look at the other's expression, then broke out laughing. He was absolutely serious. But torturing Luke with things that would be good for him was always a joy.

Lisse stared at his brother and then let out a groan, especially when the jackass started to laugh. He was toying with him, and that just…

“You’re so damn mean! We’ll see if we even know one another in a month. We start school next week so we might be dead by then, you never know!”

He surely didn’t know, this was…going to be strange, not that their life wasn’t already strange but…

Whatever. “If I only have to go through this running once a month, then fine. I’ll do it, but again, we might not even be around by then. Hillworth might just chew us up and spit us out.”

Lissee hopped off of the rooftop after that pronouncement. It made him feel worse than the idea of training but…

It was something that he couldn't get out of, so. It was just…

Life.
