“That was definitely a cat hair or something in our lab samples. I think Professor got some of the supplies contaminated before passing out our assignment,” Glenn insisted, although he seemed to be joking around about it and not really upset.
He and Pomelo were in the same Crime Scene Investigator course -- a normal Forensics course that he was taking for fun, so he knew a little more about what he was getting himself into with his dream job of being a firefighter, but he thought it was more amusing to call CSI class.
He and Pomelo were not in the same group, but they both seemed to have been paired with people who weren’t taking the class as seriously as they could have, and he definitely wanted to get a good grade, and he knew she was getting her Masters or something in the subject.
They both had an hour break before their next classes, so he asked if she wanted to hang out and have a snack. He packed too many homemade fruit tarts, thinking that surely he would eat them all, but now he had to get rid of them before his sister did the whole told you so when he got home with the leftovers. He couldn’t just throw them away! So sharing was the next best thing, right?
“Have you always lived in Destiny City? I moved here from Nebraska. It’s definitely a different… everything,” he said with a laugh.
He wore jeans and a plain white button down teeshirt, but he used a rainbow headband to keep his bangs out of his face for the lab, and hadn't bothered to remove it now that class was over. His shoulder bag also had various pride flags and a fire department badge, and little plant pins. The whole bag was set next to him on the bench when they found a table.

Mel giggled when Glenn proposed the idea of a cat hair contaminant.
“I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he had one or two at home. I took one of his classes when I was an undergrad and the same type of thing happened more than a handful of times.”
Like him, she looked more amused than annoyed at the situation. As seriously as she did take all of her classes, because she was passionate about the subject matter it was easy to look past the little inconveniences. Provided, of course, that the teacher wasn’t a stubborn jackhole who couldn’t ever be wrong, which this professor really wasn’t.
Besides, if she got miffed at every last little thing that happened in her life, she probably would have given up on herself a long, long, long time ago. Against all odds, she was determined to enjoy as much of her time in school as possible.
Mel was dressed down for the day–muted blue yoga pants and top; a loose, charcoal off shoulder pullover; and comfy sneakers. Normally she hated running around in her workout clothes, but truth be told she’d been a bit busy of late and laundry had fallen to the bottom of her priority pile. Not that she’d ever admit that to anyone…
She took the seat across from him and set her own bag down beside her. “Nope, I moved here when I started college,” she replied as she pulled a large, insulated bottle from her bag. “That was…wow, five years ago now? It was a tough adjustment but being busy helped. From where in Nebraska, if you don’t mind me asking?”

Glenn couldn’t help but snort in amusement, and then forcibly made a disgruntled expression at the thought of Nebraska.
“What do you know of Nebraska, and I’ll tell you if you’re hot or cold,” he teased. There wasn’t much. At least compared to places like Destiny City.
“Technically the suburbs of Omaha,” he said anyway, giving her a pass on trying to come up with what she knew about the state. “But my family works with horses. We have a ranch, not too far from the city. Well, the ones who stayed there. My brothers are all here in the city. Only our sister is back home with mom and dad, but that’s more for her passion and, well… Nebraska can only offer so much.”
Certainly not strange adventures in finding out why their response time was suspiciously slow when it came to finding out about fires and other emergencies. But that was a different conversation.
“So what got you into forensics? For me, this is mostly filler to make sure I keep enough school hours,” he admitted, although he was clearly not fooling around in class, despite his cheerful and teasing nature.

Mel gave him a fond little smile. The way he talked about his home didn’t seem far off from hers. It was fine, but as far as her dreams and passions were concerned there just weren’t too many options back home.
She pulled two little cups from her bag–she intended to share her juice with someone when she made it, after all–and set them out while he spoke, then poured herself a cup from the bottle. Out came a liquid that looked akin to orange juice. She waited until he finished speaking, then said, “Cold-pressed this morning, if you want some? It’s carrots, oranges, nectarines, apples, and a touch of lemon juice and ginger.”
“And yeah, I feel like suburbia’s probably more suited to growing families, family-owned businesses like yours, and retirees.I figure most college-age kids would wanna leave to chase their dreams in a big city somewhere if they get a chance. I did,” though there were definitely other reasons mixed in. His question about her interest in forensics had her cheeks turn the slightest shade of pink out of embarrassment.
“It wasn’t for any noble reason. I always loved mystery type shows growing up. That turned into police procedurals and true crime documentaries as I got older. Because of that, my dream jobs always revolved around this kinda stuff. After doing a bunch of research into all the different roles in the process of catching the ‘bad guys’ I honestly thought forensics just suited me best. After my first semester in college I was pretty happy to find that I was right about that!”
She sipped her drink before asking, “You said this is a filler class but you’re taking it pretty seriously. Is your major something sort of related?”

“Oh, that sounds delicious, yes please! Thank you!” he quickly agreed to the home made juice. He definitely wasn’t the type to refuse an offer. That seemed rude! And she put so much work into it, she was obviously sincere about sharing it if she was offering!
“Nothing wrong with going to school for something that you are interested in!” he insisted, not wanting her to feel bad at all about whether it was for a noble reason or not. Being able to learn was part of the journey of life.
“I want to save kittens from trees for my profession,” he winked a bit cheekily, but he meant it with good nature. “But really, I’m currently only a volunteer firefighter, but want to do it professionally. I have to take classes and certifications, and some I have to be a certain age to get, so I’m learning all I can about topics that I think might be useful,” he explained, hoping it wasn’t too silly.
“Oh, this is delicious,” he gasped when he took a sip of the drink she gave him. “Like really. If you change your mind about forensics then you could look into being a nutritionist or mixologist even,” he suggested, clearly regarding her drink as a piece of art.

”Now that is noble,” she grinned when he said he wanted to save kittens for a living. She sipped her juice and listened intently as he spoke on his own career aspirations. It was always nice to listen to someone talk about their dreams and passions. They tended to be more animated in a way that made it very clear how much they loved whatever the subject might be, and that made them more enjoyable to listen to. At least to her.
His compliments kept her smiling, and the blush didn’t completely fade. She loved it when people enjoyed something she made at home, be it something she cooked or crafted. She was never great about taking compliments, though, and she waved her hand as if to refuse or dismiss it. “I don’t think I’m that good, but I’m glad you like it!"
She took another sip, mostly so she could hide behind the cup a little bit. "So, if you don’t mind me asking, what made you wanna be a firefighter? It’s noble but definitely puts you in the line of fire, so to speak.”

He laughed of course! Saving kittens was definitely the fun part of the job, and the part he liked to share the most. But he didn’t think it was noble as it was just doing his part.
“No no, don’t be hard on yourself. You really have a gift,” he insisted as he took another sip. I don’t know if I’m being noble so much as it gives me something to do. I want to help, but I’m not cut out to be a doctor, you know? I can do first aid, and, well, I’ve got three brothers and two sisters, so being able to help them out is a plus. Not that they get into too much trouble. One plays baseball, another does ice skating… another reads and probably gets papercuts all the time. Very important the wound is disinfected and mended properly,” he said with another grin.
“But even if you just love mysteries, I bet you can do a lot to help people, knowing how to think outside the box and trying different things,” Glenn said, and then gestured to the drink. “Just like this. I had no idea it would be so delicious, although I did have high expectations of you already.”
