They continued to descended down the Castle further down and down. Wolframite's heels clacked on the obsidian stone as the crystals flickered with purple lights that reflected on the floors and walls. Every time he took this walk, he remembered the first time. Back when Tanzanite and the small group happened on the door and opened it for the first time.

It had been years. So many gone.

Some days like this, in these moments, he felt like a ghost who just hadn't caught up yet to realizing they were gone.

Reaching over, he raked a few claws down his arm just to feel the slight sting of it against his arms.

"The Rift is down this way, but we have to go through security. There is the Hall of Shadows. Don't be alarmed, but there are shadows that are behind the walls, trapped. They can still reach out to you at times, so you should keep in the middle. As a lieutenant, you should never come here alone. Even as a Captain, I have to be careful - but they seem a bit more tolerant of me nowadays. Maybe cause I've been here so long - or maybe because I'm similar. Senshi cannot ever come here alone. They need a higher-powered escort. They hate them - obviously. The youma are the citizens of the Earth Kingdom who sided with Queen Beryl and were deformed by the magic of the Moon during the rebellion."

Waiting at the open door, he looked down the long hallway and back at Hyde. "Ready?"

Hyde followed calmly and quietly in Wolf’s wake, this place was strange and almost dreamlike in its construction, the crystals and lighting almost unreal to his senses. There was a conflict in him where he understood that if he wanted to appear normal, an emotional entity that lived in the world, he would express some degree of awe and potentially fear outwardly. However, he didn’t really feel like he needed to perform that pantomime for Wolf. There was a little of honesty others did not receive in the way he simply looked the sights over and consumed the information he was offered.

“I appreciate the warning.” He said. “I was certainly never blessed in the brute strength department.” Even with the augmentation that came with his new identity, Hyde wasn’t one to go testing his limits and picking fights with strangers.

He inclined his head thoughtfully at the mention of twisted creatures that were once human, choosing to protect their planet and surrendering everything they were in exchange. It certainly wasn’t something Hyde could ever imagine doing. He was assisting with whatever this cause was, but fundamentally the only side he would ever truly be on was his own.

He nodded. “Sure. Just, keep me safe.” He said, with a playful little smirk.

"I wasn't either. I was a teenager when I was recruited. Slender and without much to a punch. I strong wind could have done me in. You'll adapt and figure out what's best for you. Some agents avoid fights where they can, but you'll need to at least get for enough to run from problems. Teleporting is draining and if you run out, you can get swarmed and killed.....or worse. Captured."

He was still looking ahead, his expression distant but pained. Slowly it eased back to something casual as he looked over to Lt. Hyde.

"Stay close and if you feel anything try and grab you, move away and hold onto my uniform. Let's go." He said as they stood at the mouth of the hallway.

It was narrow. Enough for people to go one after another but not side by side. The crystal on either side was murky, and as they started to enter and make a few steps inside, it started. The pressing of hands against the crystal, trapped as they slowly were stirred from their slumber to rise up and press themselves against the surface. Their shadowy bodies were humanoid and twisted, screaming as they claws the crystal. No noise was heard. Wolframite imagined what it must sound like on the other side and his insides ached. It was centuries and this was their reward for fighting against the Moon.

Claw marks, hundreds of them, were seen if one looked closely. They handed out. Freed. Either to rest in peace outside of purgatory or to seek the same pain and suffering they endured for all this time. He couldn't fault them for either.

Wolframite looked to these faces, thoughtful and saddened, as he lead the way ahead and made sure Hyde wasn't far behind him.

"The Rift is ahead."

“I’ve lived most of my life avoiding fights. Most of the people I’ve known who charged headlong into arguments were – for want of a better word – idiots. There are other ways to get even that does not involve directly putting oneself in harm’s way.” He nodded. “I intend to become very, very good at running away. Teleporting for instance sounds much more my speed.”

He looked pleased at the idea of running away from his problems. Far better than getting involved with hand-to-hand combat with aliens.

Hyde did as he was requested, sticking close to Wolframite, more than happy to follow orders when it meant not getting murdered by strange creatures.

He wasn’t sure what to expect, but as he saw the creatures, shadowy and strange writhe against the crystal’s surface, he had to pause for a moment, hardly daring to breathe. His heart fluttered in his chest and there was a thrill of excitement that lodged itself somewhere in his chest. It was suffering, suffering writ large, writ on a scale that would have fitted beautifully in any of the works of Milton that he enjoyed.

He wanted to press his palm to the crystals, to be close enough to that suffering that he could feel it through the walls, to consume so much anger and rage until he was full. It was passion and he was nothing and he wished he could drink it in like a draught.

It took Wolframite speaking to him to jar him out of his reverie, resisting the urge to reach out.

He had no words for what he’d just witnessed.

The hallway ended and opened up to the jagged wasteland of the Rift. The place grew nothing and was nothing more than stone, crystal, and deep casams. Sometimes there was water, or what looked to be water, but it was toxic to humans. Chaos was thick here, and even collected in miasma-thick pools of sludge that could make anyone sick.

"This is the Rift. You can't teleport here. There is only one way in and out. Most people only have need to come here to get a personal youma. A hard task if you don't have the power to gain the respect of one to bond with you." He explained, leading the way down a vague path.

"There is a arena where you can challenge them, but you can also venture out anywhere as long as you are careful. This is their territory, and regardless of all being for the Negaverse, they are very territorial here. It doesn't matter to them what your energy signature reads, they will kill you if you bother the wrong ones. I wouldn't underestimate any of them. Even the small ones can gather together and overtake an officer."

"I once gained the favor of a large flea Queen and was able to use her children to gain energy many years ago." He explained with a smile.

"I also had a personal youma before, but we are no longer bonded." He followed, a bit saddened by this. His change to a traitor of the Queen had made his youma distrust him for all of time. It was a loss he still mourned.

"There are also ancient youma here. Too large, powerful, and old to be one bound by anyone. It's best to find one that you can work well with and offers something that you need. When you become a Captain, you can gain the service of one. Right now, none will respect you enough to care to bond with you. Which means most will attack you on your own in here. I'd wait for an escort if you have to come."

He continued to walk the path. "The Rift is constantly shifting and has earthquakes from time to time. Be careful of the deep cracks and pits that form and don't go into any caves - they could get you overrun very easily."

"In the Rift if the old Kingdom of Earth. A knight's academy, but it is in ruins now and very dangerous. This isn't a place you need to go unless you ask for permission. Most likely a General King and Queen. Otherwise it's suicide and could get you into a lot of trouble if you try."

Hyde followed as close as he could to Wolframite without bumping into him, possessed by a child-like desire to hold onto his clothing but resisting on sheer force of will. He didn’t want to upset his guide or weird him out, being left alone here in this alien landscape felt like it would be a hasty way to die.

“A personal youma.” He said, as if testing the thought out for size. He had seen one or two individuals with strange creatures in tow since arriving, but the idea of having one himself at any point seemed like a far-off pipe dream, besides, they were probably high maintenance. “Sounds difficult to manage. Though no doubt the bonuses are substantial.”

He didn’t ask what had happened to Wolf’s youma, assuming that it might have been to do with his hybrid nature. Maybe it was weird to be bonded to someone who was half the same as you were.

“That’s very interesting that they might work with us. Something for the future. I certainly wouldn’t just come sauntering down here on my own. I’m no caver and no fighter. Fascinating that all this is out here though.”

It was the kind of thing someone could write a song about, he thought. There was an intense and overwhelming sort of beauty to the abject desolation of it all.

"Not really. Most only summon them to their side when needed. Some have a youma just for a help in a fight. Some have them to help them see. Some have them to help them do everyday tasks while in the castle. When they do not need them, they dismiss them and they resume their life here, in their own lands. You don't need to feed them or maintain them in any way.

"The longer you are with one, the stronger the bond. They can come in your time of need. I've been rescued before by my past youma. And if they get killed by anyone other than a Royal Senshi or a Royal Knight, then they just reform here. The thing you also have to be aware of is that youma love starseeds. They love to eat them, so it's best not to go waiving any around if you can." He said as he walked down the sloping path.

"Of course there are people without youma. Some just don't care for them and others just haven't found one that suits their wants." And that was about that.

"Anything you wanna ask so far about all of this?"
PostPosted: Wed Aug 16, 2023 5:26 pm

“Oh really?” The news that there was pretty much no maintenance had Hyde’s attention piqued. It sounded prudent to enlist a youma when possible, to him, especially given that he wasn’t exactly hand to hand oriented. He would have to weigh the pros and cons carefully. He didn’t like relying on people other than himself and getting his own monster would put him in a position where said monster could murder him instead of a target. Sometimes owning a weapon made you more likely to die by that weapon.

“The immortality part is also very useful I bet. I’m not regenerating, so it makes sense to obtain help from something that does. I just must hope I am eventually sufficient to warrant one.”

Though already he found himself wondering what it would be like to be as Wolframite was, was his lifespan increased? Could HE regenerate? Those were questions for another day perhaps.

He shook his head. “No questions at the moment. I very much appreciate you taking me on this trip though, it is good to see things hands on, it gives me food for thought. I’m just absorbing as much information as I can at present.”

He smirked a little. “It’s a good bit of time to expend on someone, if you were at my workplace, I’d send you a gift basket.”

He smiled at that. "I don't need anything. I like taking people here to see everything there is to offer and to give you a chance to know about the side you are putting your life on the line for. Keeping you in the dark and not being able to know what could help you benefits none of us. The more you know, the more some senshi or knight can't try to put the wool over your eyes with their lies. You've seen this place yourself. Has anyone told you why it's like this and why we are here?"

He turned to walk ahead. Small youma looking more like scorpions with crystal armor skirted out of the path and into small holes in the ground.

"Queen Serenity ruled the Moon. The Prince of the Earth, Endymion, fell in love with her daughter. With there union came the threat of all of Earth being under the Moon's rule, and the people of this planet didn't want to loose their way of peace and life. They didn't want to forfeit it all just from the love-sickness of the prince to please his lover. Back then, Queen Serenity, the moon, they had strong magic and Earth did not. Not like them. The people who opposed fought and died against the moon and this union, wanting to usurp the foolish Prince who betrayed his own people for his own selfish happiness. They got to the castle, the one we just left, under the flag of Queen Beryl. When they did reach him, the Queen was there. She unleashed her power, and warped this place to what it is now. The starseeds of those who didn't die turned into the youma. Turned into the shadows trapped forever in that hallway. Punishment and Damnation for daring to try and reclaim what she felt was hers. Even with al that magic, she was threatened by those armed with just determination and weapons."

"Corruption - it's not a word to mean we are evil. We're just a corruption against their world that they want, and who could be more proud to destroy that way of life."

And to that he smiled.

"A lot of the senshi and knights think they are clean against the lengths of where we would go, but unlike most of them, we see what's at stake every time we see the castle and the Rift. We'll kill for it if we need to, and taking a little bit of energy from everyday people is just a necessary tax to keep them ignorant and out of the battle we fight for them. But those senshi and knights have a legacy tied to this war and this place. And I have seen the evils they have done first hand. No one is clean here. It's war. Killing - it's just a part of it that sometimes can't be avoided."

He continued to walk, more at peace with this than somber.

"Don't let them talk about purification to you. It's all lies. They are a blight." He warned, face fare more cold now and eyes glowing brightly.

“Well, I appreciate it regardless. There are plenty of places I have been and worked where people are simply too burned out or wearied from a high turnover to speak to new recruits from scratch. It’s important to me. I enjoy a human touch.” For Hyde it was as important to get a handle on how people behaved in a group as it was to understand the reasons for what he had to do.

He’d been given a briefing on the reasons for their work, but listened keenly as Wolframite elaborated on it further, eyeing the little scorpion youma and taking a subtle step back from them as they scattered. He wasn’t about to test how painful or poisonous things might be here.

Hyde nodded, his features hardening. If there was one thing he didn’t understand or really believe in at all, at it was love. Driven entirely by hormones and their own ideas of what it meant, people made foolish choices and destroyed their life and wellbeing. It sounded like this prince had forsaken everything he represented to sell his people out to an alien army that had nothing in common with them.

“That’s horrible.” Hyde said coldly. “Though not surprising, those with power will do anything in order to keep it, it is simply logical. I would not expect mercy from a powerful ruler, and that sounds like what this Queen Serenity was.”

It wasn’t that Hyde resented powerful individuals, it was simply that he felt more suited and deserving of it than they were. Clearly this foolish queen had lost control of her own family and neighbouring kingdom and did not deserve the power she possessed. The Negaverse rising again would mean a harvest of power to partake in, and Hyde always liked to get the lions share of whatever was up for grabs.

“People in the modern world.” Hyde said idly. “Give their life force piece by piece to faceless corporations who use it only to keep them locked in their little cycles. It is only fitting that we take that particular tithe for ourselves. Once they are protected from the imminent threat…”

He waved a hand vaguely.

“Then they can be fully freed.”

He smirked at Wolframite. “I’d let them talk to me about it.” He said. “But I am /certainly/ not going anywhere. I’d just like to understand their propaganda, I like to understand people.”

"Many people are like that. Tired from their own work, juggling their double lives, and not tolerant of the questions and nativity of some of the newer recruits. But I remember how that was for me, and I'd like as many of us to know things that could help them live longer than being confused, lost, and then continuing through the ranks with only half of what is available to them to help them. Plenty of people have helped me in my time and I wouldn't be where I am without their kindness and patience. I like to keep that legacy going." He slowly gained his balance after a few rocks rolled under his heels dangerously.

"Further down this way is the Scar. You can see the mountain from here." He said and pointed to the spit mountain. "If you go there, you can work on tempering your personal youma or tempering the youma into your weapon. This isn't something you'll need to consider right now, but further when you get around to being a General and have a good, strong bond with your person youma. It's also rather tricky getting there as youma live around there. Having your personal youma with you might be a good suggestion. It's not something I've ever done."

He said, standing there and looking out down towards the mountain.

"That's about it." He said, looking out and around.

“Well, I appreciate you working through it. The double lives part can be absolutely exhausting at times, I will admit being a little regretful of joining when I’m worn out after a shift and have to go out chasing down essence from strangers. It’s a situation I’ve never quite been in before, typically I can just pay other people to do the little things in my life I don’t have time for. I can’t pay someone to cover this.

He shrugged. “But, as you say, it’s a war, and an important one, it can’t all be sunshine and roses.”

He made note of the scar, optimistic about future interactions with the youma, he was sure that given how trapped down here they were in some ways there would be means of coming to an agreeable arrangement that suited them both.

He smiled gratefully at Wolframite. “I appreciate it, I’d hardly have believed a plane like this lay just below our feet. I’d like to have seen it when it was whole before it was destroyed. It’s a small honour to be able to witness it before I’m strictly safe to do so.”

The fact Hyde could easily pay people when he was employed meant he made enough to give people money. He'd heard doctors got paid a lot, but he had to wonder just how much.

"I imagine it bust have been beautiful. A pristine castle overlooking the knight's academy, entire neighborhoods around it and probably all manner of plants and greenery." He is eyes trailed up to the rolling electric clouds above. A storm was working itself up again.

"The sky probably was not like that. We should start heading back. The electrical storms can get pretty bad around here, and without much around for the lightening to go, it's good not to become a target." He turned, this time walking alongside the other on their way back.

"Do you have a family?" He asked, curious.

Hyde tried to imagine it as he looked over the landscape. Unfortunately, his imagination was probably one of his weakest traits when it came to things like this. All he could envision was something from a medieval painting, something he knew was likely very far from the land that once flourished here.

He gave up and turned to Wolframite instead, always a little chilled when he brushed up against the limitations of his own thinking.

“I’d like to avoid being struck by lightning today, so I’m in full agreement.” He said, pressing on with the more imminent matter at hand.

As they went, he fell quiet at the question, thinking about it for a short time before replying.

“I had a family.” He said. “I do not have a family now.”

He felt maybe this was not a good question to ask then as the other man had been quiet for a while.

"I've lost my family too, but I do not remember them. I've lost all memories of being a civilian. I would not recognize them even if I did see them." He said in hopes sharing might help.

"We do not need to talk about it then if you do not want to." He stated before looking ahead.

Talking was hard when it wasn't about the Negaverse.

"What do you do when you are not a trauma surgeon?" Another standard question from the list.
