Since his discussion with General King Jet, Wolframite had been working on clearing out some rooms. The first one was a office for himself. Most of the rooms either had nothing in them, random debris from previous owners, or very old equipment. Some even were just full of spare supplies that people had placed in there to make other rooms cleared for us.
He'd been taking out a old desk that had somehow was broken in half. Whatever story was there, he'd never heard the story. The amount of dust said it had been a while ago, and dragging it out meant he had to break it apart and then set it out to slowly throw it away. Over the past couple of days, he managed to teleport it out to a dumpster and had finished clearing the room out to clean. After scrubbing the place down, he gathered a desk, a few chairs, and a file cabinet. To make it more comfortable, he brought some of the animal skins from home to lay around the chairs. It still had a ways to go, but he could put in a request for some upgrades - like light.
Sighing, he turned on the battery-powered camp lantern. That's the best he could do right now. If he planned to clear out more rooms, he'd have to bring his own light.
Picking up the light, he stepped out into the hallway to get a good overall look at everything. It was far from glamorous.

Hydroxyapatite generally spent as little time as he could in negaspace. He was still new as agents went and had been mostly focused on juggling two intensely time-consuming jobs. It was one thing to be a surgeon, it was another thing to be a surgeon who was also expected to gather a quota of energy every single month. People spoke glowingly of side hustles; Hyde found his side hustle perhaps less enjoyable than he had thought at the point of signing up. For once he’d managed to secure enough of a vacation that he’d managed to squeeze in enough sleep that he felt halfway human again and had decided to do a bit of exploring.
He didn’t know a lot of individuals very well at present, but he considered that an asset. He could only assume that - in an organisation focused on power gathering - people weren’t exactly of the kindest temperament to new blood.
When someone stepped out in front of him, he froze up instinctually like a deer in the headlights. You really did not know at all who you would meet in this place.

A ear turned, and soon his head followed, looking over to the man who he hadn't noticed was in the hallway with it. From the looked of it, he had just stepped in his way, and startled with this news, he gave a apologetic smile.
"Oh, sorry. I didn't notice anyone was coming this way." He said, and then was about to take a step to the side when he stopped.
"Actually, can you help me with something?" He asked.

Don’t stare. That was the first rule that Hyde had set himself. No matter how weird things turned out to be, don’t stare. He was used to wearing a mask of personality, so this wasn’t too difficult ultimately. He smiled, he frowned, he timed expressions like a dance, none of them really touching him. It was the same as playing an instrument, playing his own body, playing social interaction. He smiled, cordial and unphased, willing to help. “Not a problem, I was just having a look around, finding the lay of the land, so to speak.” He nodded agreeably. “I’d be happy to help with anything, if I’m able.” He said. It wasn’t in his nature to be generous with his time or possessions, but there was a ladder to climb here, and he was incredibly low on friends or acquaintances.

"Oh, well that explains why I don't recall seeing you. Sometimes it's hard to keep up on who is new or just someone I've never had a chance to meet." And with rank, you couldn't tell if they were just a lieutenant for a while or just the day before.
"From what you've seen so far of the castle and grounds, what are you impression of the place? Anything you can think of that could make the place more - welcoming? Functional?" He asked. "I've been here so long that I'm lacking a bit of perspective. Living here and not exactly being fully human - I'm at a bit of a disconnect."
If the officer was just getting used to the place, he could offer a fresh perspective of what might be wanted or needed for the castle. Jet had asked that he look into making the place more of a place officers would want to be than a place they had to in order to report to officers, work in any offices, and drop off their energy quotas. Overall the castle was dark with the glow of purple crystals. Most rooms lacked electricity, technology, and were vacant aside from some office supplies. It didn't scream comfortable or elegance.

There was a carefully blank look that came into Hyde’s eyes at the question. His impression of the place. It was a very, very strange landscape and world, like another planet entirely. “It’s beautiful.” He said, a little thoughtfully. His sense of beauty was a little skewed, he saw it in unlikely places, in the blossoming of blood from shattered capillaries, from the look of peace on the face of the dying, in a shattered mirror on a bathroom floor. Seeing it here was just another beat of poetry. At the question about making the place more welcoming and functional, he seemed to consider this too. He lived in luxury when not at work under normal circumstances, earning a sizeable wage and having previous investments to sustain him. He had stayed in lavish hotels and furnished his home in simple but expensive elegance. This was all something else. “A bit of light I think.” He said with a chuckle. “I think that if I had to live here, I’d go a little mad without some calm tranquillity. Dark and ominous is all well and good, but I think we could do with a little white marble, bright flooring, and if there isn’t any natural light then some very good, UV sun lamps. Perhaps a relaxation room of sorts. Perhaps with some gentle music.” He smiled a little. “Unless there is something like that and people of my rank simply aren’t allowed to visit.” He glanced around. “It all adds a lot to be desired, I’m always relieved my stay here is quite temporary. It must be depressing to be trapped here long term.”

He considered this and looked at his own office and then hallways. Getting some more overhead lighting would be a good start. It was the wiring and getting some Mauvians to work on setting up electricity throughout the place. Even getting one room hooked up required a request. How would they take to asking for an entire stretch of rooms? Maybe it was best to clear out a set amount, ask for the wiring, and then they expand from there? That would also nicely group the offices to not be at much of a distance - but some already were. He'd picked his room because it was one of the few small ones captains were granted. Given the opportunities that came with being a General, he'd like one larger, preferably if he could manage a window.
"That's a good start. And no, there isn't a relaxation room. At most the closet thing we have to rest is the Medical bay or the barracks. There isn'' a communal space for gathering outside of that." A lot had been broken down to just the necessities of those fighting in a war. A lot of luxuries were still vacant as they were deemed unnecessary to continuing their duties.
The comment on depressing had him shrugging. "I think being a half-youma had made me a bit more comfortable to the climate and lack of sun. But I do have a house down at the ruins of the city. It has all the amenities of a normal house.....I think. I've been reassured at least it does." He didn't have the memories of a human to know otherwise, but he'd seen the interiors of homes on TV and inside home-design books. He'd also gone to a furniture store with Laven once and seen the set-ups of a normal living space.
"White Marble would be hard to replace, but maybe some light rugs could help a little." It would certainly change the color from floor to walls.
"Relaxation room....and music..." He mused out loud, looking a little lose. "What.....music is relaxing right now?" The captain did not own a music app of any sort or knew who was even popular now.

“Can’t say I’m surprised that there’s no relaxation room.” Hyde said with a faint frown. “This whole place seems to be on a war footing all of the time.” He crossed his arms. “But you know what wars do to people long term. It’s poor mental maintenance. You can feed people and give them somewhere to sleep, but if you don’t take care of their head, they break all the same.” Hyde wasn’t incredibly invested in taking care of other people on an emotional level, but thanks to his line of work, there was some thread of pride in him as pertained to optimising the human machine. “And oh I see. I have not met a half youma before. It’s certainly very impressive to look at.” He tilted his head slightly. Perhaps that explained why the man in front of him hadn’t gone mad living in these frankly miserable berthings for what seemed like so long, perhaps the monstrous angle of his nature had softened something of human longings a little. “I can’t speak for everyone as regards relaxing music, but I play piano. It soothes me when I feel a little… tense after work.” Though lately rather than soothe out those emotional wrinkles, he’d mostly been directing them into his work. There was a coldness to him that ran right down to the core, a hollow emptiness at his heart that made the harshest of decisions easy, that made murder effortless and harming others simply another step towards a goal. The restlessness made it harder and harder for him to tolerate the boredom that permeated his life and it needed an outlet, it needed to be expelled. And this … negaverse thing, let him expel it. “If they ever get a piano here, I could certainly show you.”

"There isn't many of us. Not just because many people would give up a part of their humanity and abandon the ability to live a normal life, but there is the fact that I'm not as versatile as say, you. I can't do operations during the day without having to rely on a limited glamour to pass. O really, it's more encouraged to not need to go this far. Going full youma looses your humanity entirely and keeps you restricted to a rift and some strict supervision."
"This place has always been focused at reminding everyone the gravity of what is the cost of loosing. It's why the work at hand is so heavily focused upon, but you make a point in that there needs to be some softened edges to keep those here for a long time from being worn thin and those new to the Negaverse from being intimidated too quickly. It's actually a place of strong bonds and community, but - I suppose that has lapsed in presentation for a very long time. Not since..." He tried not to think of them.
Tried not to think of that Crystal.
Tried not to think of who started all of this when he was fresh-faced and afraid.
More aware of who he was standing in front of, he straighted up to regain some composure.
"I don't think we could get a piano, but I'll remember the music suggestion." He thought of welcoming atmospheres and the tax this job had on people. People with normal lives juggling this and their normal lives, lying to others, and just finding the time without being sleep deprived. It had to be a lot.
"Ah, did I introduce myself. Captain Wolframite." He carefully offered just two of his claws as most people avoided full handshakes with him and only took the tips to shake. "It's nice to meet you."

"Humanity has its perks." Hyde said with the faintest hint of a smile. He did not feel very human at all, even at the best of times, feeling more like his body was a mask that he wore rather than something tethered tangibly to his identity. "Primarily being able to move through the world without comment. I imagine.."
He looked at Wolframite with a keen stare. ".. I imagine the most tedious part of life looking as you do is how many of your peers comment on it. I'm a singular new recruit, and I am fascinated, but it must become grating after a while. How many people - for instance - see your claws before they see you as an individual?"
He smiled cordially. "I can't comment on the community unfortunately, I'm a bit of a lone wolf in many regards at present, doing my job in both realms, getting by as best I can. I don't know where people even find the time to socialise, frankly."
There was no hesitation at all as Hyde shook Wolframite's claws, unphased by many things others might deep grotesque or offputting. "Pleasure's all mine, I assure you. I'm Lt. Hydroxyapatite, I'm quite the mouthful. You can call me Hyde, if you should like."

"Compared to how my life would be without the change, I can live with some stares. I used to get them for my eye patch back before everything happened. Nowadays, I've just let people touch my arm to get it out of their system so that we can move on."
He paused here to see if this was something Hyde wanted to do.
"Considering there aren't many half-youma, it's a given that I would need to be a good representative for the other officers to look at and be at ease. I don't want to give the wrong impression right off the bat and make everyone assume we are the same." He could only wish the other half-youma acted the same.
"It's a easy enough trade off in the end for what I have gained as a result. Overall, I'm very blessed to be here today." And he had the Queen to thank for her mercy and forgiveness.
"Would you like any help getting to know the place? Has anyone shown you the Rift? Barracks?" The Negaverse was massive and if you wandered too much, you could get lost or even attacked by feral youma.

Hyde's keen stare did linger on Wolframite's arm thoughtfully, pondering what sort of anatomical structures lay below the surface. Could he find the central veins and arteries in there if it was severed? How would you treat catastrophic trauma in a structure so deviated from human norms? They were answers he found facinating, his day to day job crossing over into this strange new world for the first time. He wanted quite significantly to touch the other man's arm, but more than just a touch of curiosity, he wanted to study it, to see its range of motion, to test its reflexes, to get his teeth into this strange and facinating anatomical curiosity.
"I think I'd spend far too long examining it" he said apologetically. "Anatomy is a special interest of mine. I think you are a beautiful creature, truly. Something new and wonderful."
Normally he was more reserved, but something about the other man had a flicker of something trusting and honest. Other people might be rankled by a bit of flattery, but Hyde thought that it would register more lightly on him, just from first impressions.
"I would love to know more about half youma in due course, it sounds like a noble sacrifice. Protecting the planet with even your body itself."
He shook his head. "I did the usual tour, but I was only able to be given a very brief tour and the typical run down on the computers about our goals and so on, short of that I was trying to keep out of trouble. I wouldn't want to hinder others in their activities."

"The compliment did have him paused for a moment, but considering the tone of the conversation, it fell more into appreciation to him. Like someone seeing a undiscovered frog in the amazon or some strange fish thousands of feet below. A fascination with the new.
"There aren't too many people who analyze half-youma. I don't know any side from the others because of our own investment in ourselves. Too many of us are so different from one another that I think it would be hard to figure of one os strictures the same as the other. The mutations are so varied. General King Faustite for example has a exposed burning stomach that looks like a oven. General Lavendulan has scales and is more aquatic. I've seen another canine half-youma once." He explained as way of examples.
"It makes healing and seeking medical support a bit difficult because of our varied differences. I can only come here for health issues or wounds, meaning the Medical bay always has a challenge if it's something serious. I wouldn't even know what my bones look like." He said as he raised the oversized paw and flexed the long talons.
"I can take you around of you'd like. I enjoy the walk, and it's always valuable to have any officer know the ins and outs. Have you been assigned a team yet?" He asked as he went inside the dismal office and picked up the camping lantern. Turning it off, he store a hole in the world and put the item in his subspace pocket. With that he closed the door and turned back to him.

“That’s even more fascinating.” Hyde said “No two alike, boundless depths to explore.” He wanted to know how they regenerated, how you saved someone with scales, how you adjusted to rummage around in their interior when you had them on your table. His work was a constant challenge, hand to hand combat against death itself, and sometimes he won, sometimes he lost. This would be a different fight if he was going up against the fantastic and strange.
“I bet its boundlessly interesting.” He hummed. “I would love to get you in a scanner.”
He paused, as if remembering himself. “I apologise if its objectifying to be spoken about that way, you are an individual first, certainly, just very interesting to me is all. I would love to understand your bones and muscles, especially if it meant I could be helpful later if you were injured in some fashion.” He nodded. “I would enjoy a more thorough tour if it isn’t too much trouble. And no, no team as yet. I’ve kept to myself, the officer who showed me the ropes seemed very busy.”
He tried not to stare at the subspace pocket. He’d been instructed as to the nature of his own abilities, but he was yet to really work up the mettle to test them. The guide had not specified every eventuality from a safety perspective and he was irrationally concerned by the thought of putting his hand in and losing it in there.

The other stared back as if confused by the statement. In his introduction back from his misguided purification, he had been treated much of the same. Vitriol had been the name, a placeholder until he earned his actual title and identity. The apology was unnecessary and he shrugged it off.
"If it would help in recovering from future injuries, I'm not opposed to any scanning. If it's used for research for the good of the Negavesre, I don't oppose much." He said, and he turned, looking over to see if the other noticed enough to start following.
"I've been here for many years. You can ask me anything while we walk seeing as you have the time. I can take you down to the Rift. It's usually the most talked about and curious place to go, and the most dangerous. It's best to be with someone when going there."
"Are you a scientist of some sort? Biology?" He asked as he walked the long hallways of the castle and down the stairs to head out.
