They were here. Destiny City...and it stank. That was the only thing that Luke could really focus on right now as he stood in the pathetic excuse for a back yard that their new ‘fancy bigger’ home had…it. Wasn’t more fancy. Or bigger even. Mom had lied...and now he was stuck in a place that smelled like smog and smoke and just…nasty.
The moving truck was delayed too, so much like their last night in their old perfect home, he and Jason would be forced to sleep on the floor…only these floors didn’t even have carpet. Hardwood might look nice and be more expensive but…the idea of just sleeping on wood was…
Really crappy too.
Hearing the back door open, Luke snuck a quick glance, and on seeing that it was just his brother, he let his shoulders slump. “Okay but…mom seriously lied. This place sucks, and it stinks. I’m sure the light pollution from this damn city won’t let any stars be visible too…what are we doing here…seriously. I want to go home.”

"That's not a yard," Jason announced as he came in. "That is, at best, a porch with grass. Anyway," he slapped a twenty on the kitchen counter, "Let's get out of here." Their mom was in the middle of a grocery run, but she'd left some money and a set of keys for the boys to make a gas station snack run and get familiar with the neighborhood. And while he didn't have the same sweet tooth as his brother, Jason felt he needed something to distract him from the let down of a house they'd ended up with., No wonder Mom hasn't given them the address beforehand. It'll be a surprise! Huh. Sure was!He locked the back door, thoroughly making sure it was secure since people probably stole from houses all the time here. "The Destiny City Veterans facebook group mentioned they have a Looking at the Stars Festival in June." He gave Luke a sympathetic look. Their mom didn't even manage to get them moved while something they'd actually enjoy was going on!

“June? So I have to wait until June to see some stars in this place? And it has to be with Veterans? Nothing against Veterans, good for them and all but…”
He rubbed his face, digging the heels of his palms into his suddenly stinging eyes. “It’s August. June is ten months away and I’ll combust, Jason. You know that I’ll combust.”
This place sucked. “We should just run away and live in the woods or something. Might be better for us. You can kind of see the mountains a little bit in the distance…they’re not our mountains back home but it’s something. Maybe we should just go try our hands at being bigfoot.”
Luke’s lips twitched slightly and he was glad that he was feeling the need to tease his brother. “...Not that you need to try with your huge feet.”

"I don't even know if they're actual war veterans," Jason shook his head. "They're like...kinda weird." Most of the time it felt like they were talking solely in the form of in-jokes, or even code. But in the past few weeks, he felt like he'd gleaned a few helpful details about the city. Like the fact that most of the wildlife had rabies. And that there was only a single 7-Eleven that stayed open 24 hours. Which was really strange in a big city, Bailey was a small town without a Starbucks in sight, but they still had two 24 hour 7-Elevens. Jason grew thoughtful at the mention of the woods, though it didn't keep him from, once again, triple checking the lock on the front door as they left the house. " We could. I hear the winter's pretty mild here. There's snow sometimes, but nothing that we couldn't handle." City mountains probably lacked most big predators too. Stepping off the curb, trying to ignore the trash in the gutter, he gave Luke a playful shove of the shoulder. "They're big because I'm going to be tall." Any day now.

“I doubt that. You’re running out of time to get tall. We both are. We’re going to be short trolls forever…”
Perhaps it was just the fact that they were in this stinking city but everything seemed just…awful. And the thought that they were going to be short forever on top of it…was just.
The worst.
“Do you think that we really could just live in the woods? Honestly, I know mom would miss us. But…she shouldn’t have taken this job to begin with, and she’s going to be working more she said so maybe missing us really wouldn’t be that big of a deal…”
They had a tent, it was packed but they had one…it wouldn’t be too difficult to get it out and honestly run away…food would be an issue but…
They were smart. Woodswise. Ish. They could deal.

"Of course we could," Jason replied, full of confidence even as he peered down an alley, looking for drug dealers, prostitutes, and other forms of shady alley-dweller. All he noticed was a cat, though. "They'll probably think we got kidnapped? Or maybe that mom killed us and hid the bodies really well," he added before Luke had a chance to feel too happy. "But I looked up the crime stats for this place, and disappearances are pretty high. Especially in the age 14 to 25 range. We're prime targets." Okay so no obvious drug dealers and the neighborhood could be worse. But it also wasn't very nice either. Like somebody photoshopped a grungy monochrome filter over what might have been an otherwise okay place to live. They passed by a comic store that had tabletop advertisements in the window, and Jason nudged his geek of a brother with an elbow. "Not as good as the one back home, but at least it's close?"

“Prime targets…but…Jason, if we die..like for real die than we’ll only be statistics and I don’t want that. I just want to vanish without a trace, and I mean…do you think that mom could really…”
Luke grumbled and shrugged, trying to get his words to cooperate. “Mom wouldn’t last in jail is what I’m saying. So maybe we should at least write a note to her before we vanish. She won’t be able to find us in the woods but then she’ll have the proof that we just ran away and she won’t end up in the city jail…can’ you even imagine what the city jail must be like? The idea sickens me.”
He shuddered, and then perked up just slightly at the idea of a comic store and inched over towards the windows of the place, pressing his face against it. “...Do you wanna go in? Just for a second? All my miniatures are packed away and…the idea of being able to paint something is suddenly the best idea ever…”

With a bemused tilt of his lips, he watched Luke struggle with being mad at mom, but not that mad. "Yeah, it'd have to be a pretty good note, too. Convince her we went to Canada or something, so they don't send a bunch of rescue workers into the woods, either." Jason considered the twenty mom had left for them and tossed the idea of snacks out the window. They were definitely going to get pizza later that night anyway, and his brother needed another sort of food right now. A feast for the eyes and maybe something to his hands busy. And Jason wouldn't mind taking a look at the board game selection himself. "Okay, but your budget is fifteen unless you brought some extra cash, got it?" Pushing open the with a cheery jingle, he stepped in first, taking a long sweeping look around the place like there might be who knows what lurking within. Bullies? Angry middle-aged nerds? But there were just a few normal looking people browsing, and a boy around their age chatting loudly with the cashier. The place was packed full of visual interest, the owner was definitely a more-is-more true believer and while Jason wanted to stay loyal to Bailey's Heroes' Rest, it was kind of exciting to take it all in. This place was lacking style, but boy was there a lot of substance.

“Wait, seriously? But what about snacks?”
Luke didn’t even hesitate and glanced around the store, inhaling the pure smell of nerd. It wasn’t something that he enjoyed owning up to but…every comic store always smelled the same. Slightly mildew-y, and like…well.
Ink? Maybe ink? They used ink on comics, but, that wasn’t what Luke was after, comics weren’t his brand of nerd, he was after the setup in the back, the large wall of figures and paints all ready for him to indulge in.
“I have some money, yeah, Jason! Look at how many they have!”
…Their store in Bailey didn’t boast such a selection…perhaps this was one step in the right direction for this Destiny City…but only a small step. And only because it was convenient.

Watching his brother's face light up, Jason could already see the list of upcoming birthday and Christmas demands scrolling one and one...and on. He should make sure to skulk around his parents and guilt them extra to make sure they overcompensated for the move with it. "It's a really um...comprehensive collection," he replied a little distracted by the towering shelves of board games. For some reason, they had all four editions of Twilight Imperium? He wondered if he and Luke could could sucker some of their eventual classmates into giving up their entire weekend to play it. Almost as if the boy chatting with the clerk has heard Jason's thoughts, he started talking about, "Man, Hillworth is almost back in session and I'm going to have to blow all my summer money on stuff to do in the dorms. It's so boring, and if I keep cash around, my roomie will probably steal it anyway." Whipping his head around to Luke, he mouthed, Dorms?Kill Bill sirens started going off in his head.

For a moment, a blissful moment, the words hadn’t registered themselves in Luke’s mind. He saw Jason’s frantic mouthing, and gave a shrug, pretending that he knew what was going on, but really having absolutely no idea and then…
…then…
Wait. What?
His head turned swiftly and Luke looked at Jason in dumbfounded confusion. “...Wait…dorms? Mom’s literally getting rid of us?”
Hillworth was the name of the school they would be going to…it had a great orchestra and their mom was so excited to be able to hear the boys play again but…
“I…what the Hell! Can this place get any worse? Seriously?”
All of the joy that the figures had brought was snuffed out like a burnt out candle. “I’m done! I’m just done.”

Suddenly certain things were making too much sense. Especially how Mom didn't seem too worried about them not liking the house. Because they wouldn't be there. Placing both his hands on Luke's shoulders, Jason stared into his eyes. "We'll figure it out, okay? I'm gonna ask that kid about Hillworth." Letting go, he moved past his twin and approached the counter.

Luke was trying desperately to not fall apart. It…wasn’t working, but he was trying. Really trying. He managed to nod when Jason was holding onto his shoulders, but once his brother had let go and turned away to talk to the stranger about their extreme exile, he found he couldn’t quite breathe.
Without another word, he turned on his heel and fled the store, wanting to be away. Away from all of this. From this stupid, smelly city, from the people who had just let him know that his school was one that would take him away from his family, and from the very idea that things had to be different. It just wasn’t fair, and it all sucked. Massively sucked.

"Yeah my guy, sorry to say you're off to Delinquentville. Kiddie-Jails'R'Us. You better...hey, weren't you guys together?" Growing dismay turned into panic, as Jason whipped his head around to see...no one. "Luke?" "Saw him head south on the way out," the clerk added helpfully. As Jason ran out, she called, "Good luck on your quest!"
