“I’m always surprised how many stars can be seen even with the city being so close,” Ephesus said as he held Amarynthos’s hand as they strolled through the park, head tilted back so he could look up at the stars through the canopy of leaves that frequently obscured the view. It probably also helped that there was no moon that night, or at least it was low on the horizon. Or maybe just being blocked by the buildings of the city, he wasn’t sure.

But he was sure that one moment he and Amarynthos were alone, enjoying a night together while their dads did whatever it was they did, and the next moment there was the energy signature of a Negaverse Captain nearby.

Ephesus immediately froze and moved closer to Amarynthos, his eyes wide in the darkness as he tried to find out exactly where the Captain was.

“Maybe they’ll go away,” he suggested, but his voice was too shaky and nervous to really believe that. Not after the last run in with a Captain. Ephesus’s chest ached just thinking about it.

“Ugh,” Amarynthos huffed, half turning to face the source of the energy signature. He couldn’t see the agent, but he could feel them.

Maybe.”

He would have much rather been enjoying the stars with his boyfriend. He could hear the way his voice was trembling so he moved a little closer. He knew the Negaverse could teleport, so he wasn’t even sure if creating a barrier between them meant anything, but maybe the Captain would get spooked by two Knights and decide he had better things to do tonight.

He gripped his staff a little tighter in his hand and wished he’d brought some industrial style flashlight. Maybe he could have blinded the agent with it or startled him away.

It wasn’t like they could hide; if they could sense that energy signature, it could sense theirs.

A part of him wanted to call out to antagonize the agent and try to chase them away, but he wasn’t sure he could make his voice deep enough to sound intimidating, and he wasn’t sure if he could convince Ephesus to make wild animal noises to startle the darkness, so he figured the best thing to do was wait and see.

…Just, not too long. He didn’t want this sudden threat to call for backup.

Captain Crocoite was, as always, in a foul mood. In fact, it was less common for him to be in a good or even passable mood, these days, as his desire for power and revenge consumed his every waking moment. The chaos inside him often felt like it was churning, and he knew he was meant to be capable of far more than he was currently proving. He lived in a shadow that he hated, and dreamed only of clearing the path of those that cast it, so he could then cast his own.

Killing a Royal Knight, however, would be difficult. His first target was his own former General. Once he was done breaking her, not only exposing her for the traitor she was, but proving he was stronger and more capable than she ever had been even in her prime, he would have the power he needed to topple the one responsible for poisoning her mind with thoughts of redemption.

The only thing befitting any of them was death. While he feared his own would come to soon, he was determined to make use of every moment he was given, to continue growing. With power, even fate was malleable. With power, he would be unstoppable.

Between all his angry, impotent thoughts, Crocoite felt auras. Two, but he was not in the mood to wait for another target.

Taking a note from that former teacher he hated so much, he teleported abruptly, appearing behind the closest of the two energy sources, though they were so close together he ended up behind them both. He tilted his head, a long, toothy grin splitting his face. With his scowl, it lacked anything even pretending to be friendly, his voice dripping with malice as he leisurely spoke.

"So sorry, am I interrupting?" He droned, holding his cane in front of him. He had both hands resting on its head, its long, silver crocodile snout sticking out under his palms.

One moment the man was there, and then the next he wasn’t -- instead, he’d appeared behind them so suddenly that Ephesus let out a startled yelp and jumped backwards as he still clung to Amarynthos, hopefully pulling him away from the man as well.

He had a cane of some kind. A crocodile?

Oh!

Ephesus quickly reached to fumble with the bauble filled with water that he wore. He wasn’t entirely sure if he meant to summon her, but an angry growl from a manifested tiger startled him once more.

She had hackles raised and ears back, clearly waiting for the command to attack as her large form stood next to Ephesus.

Okay, but she also had a mind of her own, and made a quick warning swipe at the Captain. Maybe just to knock the cane out of his hands. But it was a gesture that clearly emphasized the warning to back off.

Quote:
Summon: A golden tiger that shimmers with moonlight. When summoned, it will slash or bite with terrifying ferociousness. Players can choose for their characters to avoid damage, take temporary, or lasting damage at their discretion. Its roar drains hope from opponents for the duration of the channeled magic, with lasting effects up to the player. This tiger is a powerful protector and will do whatever necessary to guard its Knight and allies.

Amarynthos was not willing to show an exposed weakness if he could help it, and a Negaverse agent behind him, behind Ephesus, was too dangerous to play off casually. It was in his nature to be friendly and social, but there was no reason for anyone to be that close unless they were up to no good.

In the split second he had to assess Crocoite, all he could tell was that he looked like he was trouble.

Sounded like it, too.

Ephesus had the right idea, so when he jumped and pulled at Amarynthos, he was completely pliable. And Ephesus! How resourceful! He’d managed to call forth his summon, and she was already making a statement!

He wrapped an arm behind Ephesus, deliberately over his back and where he suspected was the most likely place to pull a starseed. He clutched his staff tightly but made no effort to summon any magic of his own. He was ready to fight, but they had to ration their magic in a way that the Negaverse did not.

“Depends on what you’re here for,” he answered, guarded in his caution.
