"Home by 2am, alright?"

Gently heard herself, but hardly believed these were conversations she had regularly in real life now. Maybe once, in her theater days, being someone's caretaker and keeper had been more likely, if only on stage. Lines to be delivered, but never something she ever really planned for herself. Yet here she was, telling her almost-son not to be out too late while he was hunting energy.

She treated him like a kid, but he did not seem to mind. In many ways, he still acted like one, but it worked out. He was an honest and kind boy, and she did not like the idea of him out on his own, with other agents taking advantage of him or someone on the white moon not knowing how good he was and hurting him.

Unfortunately, she could not stay at his side every hunt, and he was spreading his wings more and more.

"You got it, boss," Jamie's voice chirped back, unironically. He always called her Boss, and it was a badge of honor. She sighed and wished him good night, then put her phone in her pocket. He was off to hunt, and so was she. She glanced around, but it was unlikely anyone would see her behind all these bushes. She powered up and paused, letting her senses sweep the area but not sensing anything too troubling nearby.

No other Chaos, at least. Teleporting to the path just on the other side of the bushes, because she did not want to get stuck up in all those sticks again, she sighed and looked around for an appropriate target.

An appropriate target might have been right in front of her, because while Connie had paused in surprise when she felt the aura flare to life close by, she didn’t know where the Negaverse General was until they were right in front of her on the path.

Connie squeaked out a yelp of surprise and then fumbled the several balls of yarn she’d been carrying with her. The last time she was out in the park, she’d been so inspired to do art that she thought maybe she could just bring some of her yarn and work on a quick project. She’d just been trying to decide what colors would be best to start with under the path light when her plans were suddenly changed.

“Oh! Hello!” she greeted in cheerful distress, the pitch of her words steadily increasing as she spoke. “I’m Connie, it’s so nice to meet you! You’re really pretty. Can you please not kill me? I would really appreciate that!”

She knew she was definitely no match for a General, and without any of her friends nearby, she didn’t think she had a chance at escaping, either. Maybe going out at night really was a bad idea.

General Painite was not expecting to startle someone so badly yarn fell out of them, but here she was, watching someone scatter balls of the soft, artistic string across the ground. She arched an eyebrow at the introduction, and despite her practiced menace and generally sour disposition these days, she could not help but grin.

"Well, I make no promises about the killing thing," she said, bending down to recover a couple of the balls of yarn and looking at them curiously. They were not magical in any way, as far as she could tell, and she blinked in wonder. She half expected them to be a weapon of some sort, as she knew knights had ridiculous ones, and even senshi seemed to be arming themselves with strange things these days. "Though I'll take the compliment into consideration. Here."

She offered the yarn to her thoughtfully, sizing her up at the same time. Nothing particularly threatening screamed out at her. Of course, it was very hard to threaten Painite.

"I'm General Painite. You expecting to get bored out here? There's always something to do, you know. A monster lurking in the shadows. Probably not the best time to make a scarf."

She was now grinning in a dubious, less than comforting way. While she did not have her weapon in hand, as they were occupied by yarn, she could easily summon it whenever she wanted to accentuate her point. What was it with these white mooners lately? Being so sweet and, in Painite's estimation, helpless. Easy fodder for any prowling Negaverse agent looking to make a name for themselves. Jarred starseeds on a mantel, just waiting to happen.

In a way, it twisted her stomach, though she was unsure if it was the worry for these young fighters that was making her sick, or the idea that she cared at all.

“Thank you!” Connie squeaked again, although the noise from her own throat made her laugh and she quickly tried to clear it so she wouldn’t make more weird noises as she gathered up the balls of yarn that General Painite was so kind to help her with.

Not making promises about killing her…? Well, that was a good start at least!

“Oh, no, I don’t expect to get bored. That’s why I brought these!” she gestured to the yarn. But then she tilted her head curiously at the woman’s comment. “When would be a better time to make a scarf? Oh, but this isn’t going to be a scarf. I was going to do, um, kind of like string art of some night time scenery. The city makes it hard to see the sky, so I thought about the street lights reflecting off the pond,” she nodded towards the tiny pond in the park.

Oh, but that was probably even weirder than making a scarf.

“Um… this might take me some time, so… if there are any monsters, could you keep them away for me, please?” she requested, because that would be horrible if she had to pack up all her things again. “This shouldn’t take too long! I just wanted to get a general outline of everything.

She knew it was dangerous, but so far, General Painite had been nice to her! She’d even helped her with her yarn! That wasn’t what someone who would want to kill her would do! She hoped.

Painite supposed it made sense, having a plan for the evening. She was not sure she would pick to power up and then go knit, but to each their own. It was actually still better than what she was doing: which was nothing.

At least there would be something useful at the end of this girl's evening, whereas Painite's would end the way it began. Pointlessly.

"String art?" Painite asked, taking the bait. Maybe she was curious, or maybe she was letting her bleeding heart get the better of her. If she could at least get it through that maybe there were dangerous things lurking in the shadows, she would feel a bit better with herself. Whenever it came to this newer generations of fighters, Painite found herself at a loss. How did any of them survive?

How did any of them get their shoes on in the morning?

"Wait. You want me, a monster, to keep monsters away from you? You know that Chaos is probably what you're supposed to be looking out for, right? Even a friendly, chatty one can just be lying. It makes it easier to stab someone, when their guard is down." Painite summoned her spear to her hand, to help articulate her point.

And not just because it was pointed.

Connie stared at the woman, tilting her head curiously to the side, as if trying to figure out if she was missing the joke.

“But… you’re not a monster,” she blinked through her confusion, and when Painite pulled out a spear from thin air, Connie sighed with relief.

“Oh good. Yes, that’s definitely going to keep any monsters away, thank you!”

It was definitely a joke that Painite was making, so Connie laughed good naturedly at how a friendly chat could mean getting stabbed or something like that. Although Connie wasn’t quite sure she understood the punchline. But that was okay! As long as Painite knew that thought her joke was funny, right?

“Okay, this will just take a little while, let me pull everything out,” she said, turning so she could retrieve a hoop from her subspace. It looked similar to what one would use to make a dreamcatcher, and in a way that was exactly what she was doing, except she wasn’t using the typical symmetrical pattern.

“Would you like any snacks? I think I have some extra granola bars with me. I have a piece of cake too, if you’d prefer that. It’s lemon!” she smiled brightly as she held up the hoop to get a good frame of what she was going to capture with her art.

“Are you doing okay? I mean… I have a friend who was in the Negaverse. And some others I’ve met seemed to be having a really hard time,” she frowned as she thought back to the others she’d met, hoping they were doing okay now. Was it weird for her to talk to a General she’d only just met? Probably, but she’d been helped more by the Negaverse than harmed, so it was probably okay.

Painite stared. It felt like she was being set up, and there was some sort of hidden camera somewhere. She was unsure if it was a test from the Negaverse or the White Moon, however, so her options were still blurred. She kept her spear in her hand, though, her defenses raising on instinct.

Not because there was any obvious threat nearby, but rather she was feeling a very strong need to make sure nothing terrible befell the most innocent being on the planet. It was like she had happened across a newly hatched chick, all fluffy and helplessly peeping.

She couldn't just leave it, unless she knew it was safe, right?

Somehow, she doubted she would ever feel like Connie would be safe on her own. And yet, she had made it long enough to run into the General, so who knew? Maybe luck was on her side, or she was secretly a combat genius.

"I ate before I left for patrol," Painite said, shaking her head. "The Negaverse is tough, so that's not a surprise to hear. It's never easy, having a job like ours. I'm sure you find your job is tough, sometimes, right? Or are you just impossible to punch because you're so friendly?" Maybe that was how Connie navigated the war: she confused her enemies so much by being sweet, no one could take a swing. Or a stab. Somehow, Paiinite doubted that would always be effective, considering some of the Negaverse soldiers she knew. In fact, if her favorite stalker was around, he'd have a field day ripping this one limb from limb.

That thought just made her more anxious. She glanced around, but felt no other auras in the area.

“Oh no, I hope people won’t punch me! I would much rather talk. But I’m not really sure what my job is supposed to be,” Connie smiled thoughtfully as she wrapped some colorful yarn around the wood frame. It didn’t look like anything. Not yet at least. It was hard to do with one hand, but she figured she could get an idea of what she wanted to do!

“I just go out and make sure people aren’t getting hurt. That’s what you do, don’t you? Make sure the Earth is safe? That’s a pretty noble job. I don’t have any scary weapons to convince people to play nice though. Just this,” she shared, reaching under her many layers of pink and orange to pull out a small potted tree. It had pink and white flowers blooming and looked in relatively good condition, despite being shoved up some fabric layers. They were lightweight fabrics!

“Isn’t it cute? I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with this, but I like to hold onto it and talk to it. Maybe it’ll get bigger one day, but I’m okay if it doesn’t,” she chirped with enthusiasm. Once she tucked the little plant away, she went back to her yarn work, but it seemed as though she’d paused that for the moment and pulled out some other yarn instead.

“Almost done!” she promised, pulling a few more things from her subspace to quickly fasten what looked like a bracelet together. It had some purple and green and gold beads woven into the yarn, and looked like she hadn’t just started it, but was likely a project she almost had done or was working on whenever she felt like it.

“I think these colors look nice for you. Oh! But you don’t have to wear it. You can throw it away if you want. I was just looking for inspiration so I could finish it, and you were my inspiration!” she grinned, holding out the bracelet to Painite.

“You’re doing a really good job. Thank you for looking out for the Earth! And for keeping me safe while I worked. Hopefully we’ll meet up again when I’m finished and I can show you!”

Painite looked thoughtful, then shrugged her shoulders.

"No, not me, specifically. I'm just looking after myself and the people I care about. That other crap is for someone else. But if I see someone in trouble, or just asking for it, I guess I can't help myself. I'll check it out. Still, you've survived this long, so I guess you're doing something right. Or you're not as helpless as you look."

She shook her head, clicking her tongue behind her teeth. This was a bit too much for her, and her eyes were beginning to ache in that way that told her she needed to power down and watch some television.

Or literally anything else.

"I think I'll just. Leave you to your thing. You've got a lot going on here. Sorry to interrupt. Ah..." she looked at the bracelet and her expression softened a bit. Maybe she was being selfish, though she did have a lot going on. Still, she wouldn't have stopped if something inside her hadn't been concerned. She took the bracelet gently, then put it around her wrist. She held her hand out, showing it off.

"Well, thank you. That's really nice of you, actually. Just. Be careful. Seriously. I'd hate to find out you got hurt or worse, down the line. It's rare to find legitimately good people out there. I'm certainly not one. But you might be." She held the braceleted wrist closer to her chest, sighing. "Don't get killed, alright? See you around."

Looking strangely sad, Painite teleported away. Maybe she could find Ekanite, and show him what she'd been given. Though he'd probably be annoying about it, she had a very strong urge to find him and make sure he was still okay.
