Witty Punching Bag

PostPosted: Sun Jul 09, 2023 9:08 pm

As far as terrible days went, this one definitely had the potential to be the absolute worst. And considering what happened between him and his ex, that was saying something. Not only had he been struck by lightning, very soon after that he had unintentionally fried his laptop, cell phone, power bank, and he even managed to static shock himself while in the shower.

Why that hadn’t resulted in a more serious injury than his current level of discomfort he had no idea, but he was grateful. Sure he was still sore and itchy, particularly across his back (which was also oddly warm), but at least it hadn't gotten worse.

Harvey was now facedown on the sofa, clad in just a pair of basketball shorts but there was a shirt draped over his head. He’d been lying there like that for some time now, perfectly awake but lacking any motivation to move or do anything. He would have tried to sleep but he just felt overall a little too…miserable.

Melody had just gotten home about twenty minutes ago from a quick run to Costco for some milk, eggs, and one of their five-dollar rotisserie chickens to use for dinner and lunch tomorrow. She then retreated upstairs where she changed into her comfortable clothes; a tank top and thin cotton pajama pants with a paisley pattern before heading back down into the living room where Harvey had been laying when she got home.

Not too unusual but not uncommon either. Normally he was in his room but with the weather up in the 90’s it’s likely his room hadn’t cold off enough, maybe. Who knew?

Melody passed by without a word and walked into the kitchen where she got herself a tall glass of ice water and snagged two ice cream sandwiches from the freezer. Then, and only then did she resign herself to finally being done for the day and that it was time to take a seat and relax for a bit.

“Hey,” the glass of water was set down on the coffee table before she turned to her roommate. “Scoot scoot,” with a free hand she move to bump the side of his leg which elicited a startled yelp. “Holy crap, you just zapped the s**t out of me-” she shook her hand to get feeling back in her ring finger and pinky. “ Were you rubbing your feet across the carpet today?” Ugh, it felt like she just stuck her hand in a light socket.

Even the sound of his roommate moving about the house hadn’t done anything to stir him from where he lay. Usually, and out of respect, he would have pulled his shirt on if he was going to be spending time in the shared spaces while they were both home, but today had just been so…

When she greeted him he was about to say something along the lines of “don’t touch me” but…well. She beat him to it, and clearly she suffered the consequences he was sort of expecting. Moving as though in slow motion, he pulled the shirt from over his head and turned so he could see her from the corner of his eyes.

“Sorry. Not sure what kinda hell I woke up in today but I managed to fry up some of my tech, too.” He gestured vaguely at the door where he’d left his bag when he got in. The tech in question sat beside the bag. “I don’t advise sitting next to me unless you wanna risk getting shocked again.”

“Good god, do I need to go outside and find a stick to poke you with?” She asked, semi-jokingly because the idea of it made her smile, but the tingling in her hand demanded future precautions. “I take it that’s why you’re just laying here and not watching TV. You know you could have at least asked the Alexa in the kitchen to play some music for you.” One of the few pieces of electronics he didn’t have to touch to turn on.

“Anyway, sit up please.” Regardless of his warning, Melody wanted to get off her feet. “I grabbed one for you too.” she held one of the ice cream sandwiches out to him. “You look hot and you can’t eat this laying down.” Honestly, he probably could, it’d just be ill advised to do so.

Despite his mood he couldn’t help chuckling at her joke. “Bingo, and I mean I would have if I’d thought of it.”

At her urging he slowly got up and scooted to one end of the sofa, groaning the whole time. Sore felt like it wasn’t quite strong enough a word, or maybe it was just that he was so exhausted from the day that he had very little energy left to do anything else. Even move.

Once settled he slipped into his shirt before reaching for the sandwich.

“Thanks. So was that ‘hot’ as in ‘temperature’, or ‘hot’ as in, ‘Hey, you look different today but it’s a good kind of different and I like it’?” The ends of his lips were curled up ever so slightly–the only tell that he was obviously joking. A sad attempt, perhaps, to distract himself from his situation.

“Eh,” Melody shrugged nonchalantly. “A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B.” She answered coyly then took a heavy seat on the other end of the couch, least his little zappy zappy current was able to pass through the metal frame.

The way he moved to sit up was reminiscent of someone who just got back from a hard workout at the gym or had been playing mental gymnastics at work long enough that the thought of moving hurt. But with his computer on the ground next to the door and her knowing he wouldn't have gone around weight lifting bars with the risk of shocking himself and or other people, she suspected that his reaction was due to whatever it was that caused that wound on his back.

“So, are you going to tell me what happened to your back?” Most people who lay face down on a couch do so because of a sunburn from laying outside too long to the point their skin is too sensitive to lie on. But that mark did not look like it came from playing at the reservoir with his daughter, Rae.

His lips grew into a full on smile at her response, and he let the joke end there and chose instead to take a bite of the ice cream. The cold, sweet treat was refreshing indeed, and he closed his eyes and savored it for just a moment while Mel more or less dropped herself on the now free other end of the couch.

“Mm, it hurts but no clue how you would know that.” He took another bite and threw a thoughtful glance toward his roommate. “Something on it?”

“Yeah, it looks like you have a scar there or something.” She twisted in her seat to grab her phone off the end table beside her and unlocked the screen. “Here, turn that way so I can take a photo and show you.”

Scar? Was that one of the reasons his back was so itchy? The man did as asked and lifted up his shirt so she could get the photo, already halfway through his sandwich.

“Mm. Do scars normally itch when they’re fresh?”

“I don’t know about scars, but most injuries start to itch as a sign that they’re starting to heal.” Something about the nerves reconnecting. She wasn’t entirely sure about the details and would default to Alexa if he wanted more information.

Melody took a quick photo then zoomed in on the image a bit before turning it around to show him. “Look but don’t touch,” she warned just in case he felt tempted to tap the screen.

”That explains that, then,” he said, clearly not that invested in looking into it more. It wasn’t a big deal either way, not like he could speed up the healing process by knowing what all was happening throughout.

Harvey kept his hands to himself when she offered her phone for him to see. Sure enough, on his back was a bright red mark spanning the length from just below his right shoulder to his left hip. It looked like someone had whipped him across the back with a towel.

“Geez, no wonder it hurts.” He munched down the last of his sandwich, his mood only worsening at the sight of it, and got up to toss the wrapper. On the way he got himself a cup of water too, and stopped by the refrigerator to see if he remembered to throw his reusable gel pack.

There was a somewhat audible shock as soon as he touched the handle, and then a loud swear filled the room next, followed by the sound of a plastic cup falling and water spilling.

Too surprised to laugh at his misfortune, Melody turned towards the kitchen with an almost horrified expression, “Good God! Was that you, or did one of the outlets just explode?” She grimaced at the thought of calling an electrician to come out and rewire the kitchen. It probably wouldn’t end there and would likely turn into a whole house project.

Not something her bank account could support at this time. Give it a few months of rental income then maybe she would look into some house upgrades.

“Ya know-” she muttered to herself having just thought of something that might help Harvey out. She pushed herself off the couch and walked into the kitchen area, careful to give him a wide berth, just in case, and knelt in front of the kitchen sink where she rummaged around the cabinet for a pair of rubber gloves.

“Ah ha!” She raised an arm and in her hand was the item she was searching for. “Here, put these on.” Too wary that she’d be shocked next, Melody tossed them on the counter next to Harvey. “These should protect you,” Mel paused then added a quiet I think with a tone of uncertainty that mirrored her hopeful half-smile grimace.

Harvey looked at the gloves as though they’d just insulted him.

They were highlighter pink.

“Fine,” he said as he grabbed them and begrudgingly put them on. At this point he was desperate enough to look ridiculous, at least around the house, if it meant he could safely handle everyday household objects again without potentially frying them with some freakishly strong static shock.

“No guarantee you won’t get shocked by touching some other part of me, though, so.” He bit his tongue and decided not to finish that joke, instead going back to the task of checking the refrigerator for his gel pack. It was bright blue and easily spotted. Once he had it and his water again, he headed back toward the couch.

“You mind helping me put this on my back?”

Honestly, he didn’t need to finish the joke.

Growing up with two older brothers meant she heard these kinds of comments more often than she cared to admit. What shocked the s**t out of her was that it was Harvey who damn near made the sexual innuendo, Mr. Serious over here.

“I kind of do mind,” she glanced over at the computer equipment stacked by the door. “You go touch the fridge handle first, see if those gloves work. If so then I’ll put on the other pair.” If not then she’d wrap the gel pack in a towel and use a pair of plastic tongs to put it on him from a distance. Who knew what kind of static arc he was generating? Was she even safe standing only a few feet away?

He was already halfway to the couch when she asked him to touch something that could potentially either fry him or get fried itself. Turning to her in almost disbelief–almost, because there was a part of him that almost expected it–then he walked back to the kitchen and set the items in his gloved hands down.

Without breaking eye contact, he reached for and touched the fridge ******** class="quote">
