To say that Melody was surprised that her roommate managed to KO in the front seat of her car for almost an hour while she swung by the grocery store, ran inside to pick up the pies (and a few other household essentials), then drove home was a bit of an understatement. “Poor guy must have been suffering heat exhaustion.” It’s probably a good thing I picked him up otherwise he probably would have missed his bus stop. Though it had only happened once, with another friend back in college, Melz would really prefer to not have to drive into the middle of butt freaking nowhere to pick someone up at the bus terminal because the driver neglected to check if anyone was laying down on the seats.

Thankfully she didn’t have work that night and was able to pick her friend up but not without warning that something like this was to never happen again.

Interrupting her mid-thought, the shrill sounding pre-heat ring on the oven went off prompting her to slide the frozen desserts in and set the timer for forty-five minutes. After which she sat back down at the dining room table and began combing through Pinterest for newly added cosplay outfits to gather ideas on what to make next since the two World of Warcraft characters were already complete; though Harvey didn’t know it one of them was for him.

A knowing, mischievous, smile spread across her face when the sound of water running through the pipes in the wall fell to a quiet hush indicating her unsuspecting roommate had finished taking his shower.

“C’est la vie” Melody smiled to herself. Let no one say she was anything but opportunistic.

The sound of wooden chair legs sliding against the flooring was anything but pleasing but she didn’t seem to mind all too much. Instead she retreated down the hallway towards her room and began digging around the closet for the Khadgar outfit she had made a few weeks ago when Harvey had reluctantly agreed to accompany her to Comicon.

Cosplay in hand she hustled to the bathroom and rapped her knuckles against the hollow core door. “Hey! Before you get dressed.” Melody grabbed a hold of the knob and turned it then thrusted the outfit inside before he could protest. “Try this on then let me see how it looks.”

Without even needing to open the door Harvey knew she wasn’t about to leave him to his own devices and would wait him out till he subjected himself to the fitting; payment for having to pick him up no doubt, not that she would confirm or deny that being the reason she was, for all intents and purposes, making him play dress up now for the second time in one day.

He was barely getting the towel around his waist when the door opened a crack and he nearly jumped straight back and into the shower curtain, risking injury all for the sake of an outfit she couldn't wait to hand to him.

"They invented locks for a reason, Mel!" he said, voice a bit more shrill than usual on account of the minor level of shock he just suffered. He straightened himself out and got the towel wrapped properly before swinging the door completely open, not really caring that he was barely presentable. "I vote we get one for all the doors in this house, not just the bathrooms." With a scowl he grabbed the outfit and stared her down for a second.

Harvey nearly let it slide, too, hand on the door and ready to shut it closed so he could go on ahead with putting on whatever it was supposed to. Nearly. But between the almost-fall and grabbing the outfit it did occur to him to at least ask, if a bit late. His baby pink gaze fell on the clothing in question, eyes practically slits as he looked on in suspicion. Considering it came from Mel he had no doubt it was a costume, granted one that looked pretty good even just at a glance.

The outfit, then Mel, the outfit, then Mel...

When he finally felt ready to ask he heaved a sigh first. It'd be less of a discussion on whether he'd be putting it on or not and more...asking out of curiosity, he knew. She did just save him from the summer heat, but still.

"And this is for…?"

“You, my dear Harvey. Will be my plus one to the next Comicon.” She offered him an almost triumphant smile. “For once, I will have someone to finally dress up with instead of going alone.” Yes she had found some like minded individuals who just reveled in cosplay and crafting and had been offered to join a group a few times. But she’d honestly wanted to go with someone she personally knew, not just an online pseudonym.

Lavender eyes glanced down at the towel and the water that was collecting around his feet, Please, dry off completely before trying it on.” Found humor in the fact that he so proudly stood in the doorway unashamed and for modesty’s sake, Melody turned around. “I’ll be in my craft room once you’re ready so I can make adjustments.” Waved her hand dismissively as she then turned to head back down the hallway to the room adjacent from the one she slept in all the while refusing to hide the grin that nearly made her cheeks cramp.

The outfit, then Mel…

He repeated the motion a few more times when she revealed what it was that had been so urgent that she had to barge in on him while he was still more or less naked. He couldn’t completely fathom what it was about those conventions that she loved so much, but he imagined it would be akin to him geeking out if he were ever invited to E3 or any other tech type of conference. Not that he’d get so excited that he’d just casually walk into her room when she was just fresh out of the shower and still towel-clad.

No...no, it wasn’t even close.

”Don’t online friends exist for this kinda thing?” he asked, though the question didn’t keep him from taking the outfit from her and absently tossing it onto his bed. He didn’t look too happy, though. “Just gimme a few minutes.”

Thankfully he didn’t have to ask her to leave; she seemed to finally process his current state and turned around to leave on her own. He barely managed to not roll his eyes at her comment about properly drying off, and once she was out of his room he moved quickly to shove a chair so as to jam the doorknob a la action movie hero character trying to keep the bad guys out.

He thought about the comparison and grinned to himself. No doubt Mel wouldn’t have any problems ribbing him about it if he actually said it out loud. A murmured “never hear the end of it” slipped from him as he dried himself off as best he could and proceeded to begrudgingly pull on the outfit.

The fit of it was almost a little too perfect.

“Guessing you made this with me already in mind?” he said with a sigh as he walked into her craft room, expression none too impressed. “The hell would you have done if I said ‘no’?”

Yes, yes she did have him in mind when she made it.

May have taken a peek at the clothes he’d left in the dryer a few months ago and nabbed the sizes off them. Not creepy at all since she was honestly just trying to wash her own clothes and was going to be nice and fold his before putting them back in the bin. It was more a matter of convenience

“Steal all the clothes from your closet and leave that as the only thing in there hanging so you’d have no choice but to try it on.” Melody replied with a straight face and it took all she had not to crack a smile. Waited a long moment to let that sink in before adding. “Honestly though, would have likely just resorted to begging and bribing.”

Shrugged then picked up her tomato full of pins and walked over to him checking the hem’s along the pant leg and sleeves, bringing it in where necessary.

The way his face contorted into a scowl said that he was not amused.

Honestly with as much pushback as he’d given when she first started asking him to do this and it was still easy enough for him to refuse outright, he was surprised that she hadn’t resorted to stealing his entire closet yet. “Not funny,” he started, eyeing the tomato pin-cushion. Out of this whole thing this was the part he hated, if only because he just wasn’t the biggest fan of needles.

He wasn’t afraid of them! He just always wound up bracing himself in case he did get pricked, and it was like stress mounted on stress mounted on stress for a handful of minutes.

“So who am I supposed to be this time?”

Admittedly all the outfits she chose for him were always pretty cool. At least she hadn’t asked him to dress in drag for the sake of her conventions. For those he would be happy to just walk around town naked if it meant avoiding that altogether. He was fine with everyone doing what they wanted, but that was just a hard pass for him.

“Cleric warrior? Mage?” he paused for a second before hesitantly adding, “The idiot who’s at the wrong place at the wrong time at the beginning and dies right away?”

“Khadgar, from the World of Warcraft game.” Although she personally didn’t play the game, she knew enough people who did and they talked about it frequently enough at work that it got her interested in the main characters. “From what I understand he’s a strong mage, and yes, he’s still alive.”

Melody looked up and smirked, “Give me some credit here, please.” Constantly thinking that she’d be setting him up to be the butt of some joke. “I made sure to pick a well respected character that was around your build.” Could have chosen the boy-king Anduin or his father King Varian Wrynn but Harvey did not have the soft child-like face of a paladin-priest, nor did he have the weathered expression of a hardened warrior. A powerful mage was definitely the way to go with him.

“Ok!” She stepped back and looked him over appraisingly, circling him twice to see if she missed a pleat. “Thank you!” her voice carried a sing-song tone to it as she then turned to get her cold glue gun from the sewing table. “Give me just one more moment,” To each pin she put a dab of glue to keep it from falling out when he changed and to save him from the annoyance of being poked.

“Aannnd… Done!” With a triumphant grin Melody put the glue gun down. “You can go get changed now. But before you run off I need to trace your hand size and borrow a pair of shoes, please. I have the boots, gloves and belt still to make next weekend. After that, I’ll work on the tome and staff.” Yes, she had every intention to go all out to make sure Harvey resembled the character to the best of her ability. A showcase of her craftsmanship and Melody was certain he’d wear it well albeit begrudgingly for the first few hours of the convention.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 05, 2023 11:28 pm

“Khadgar, huh?” he said, testing the name on his tongue. It definitely felt like a name that belonged in a game or a book. “I’ll look ‘im up later.”

Harvey gave a smirk at the idea of giving her credit. “I never know what’s going through your head when it comes to this kinda thing.” And he stopped there, not wanting to give her any ideas for her next project when this one was only just beginning. There was a part of him that honestly wished that these conventions happened less often, at least locally, so he had more of a break in between. Once in a lifetime was plenty, once a year more than enough, but once every few months?

His patience often wore thin, but he didn’t have it in him to say no to his roommate when it came down to it. He’d rather suffer a few hours in a really nicely done costume than deal with an upset Melody at home.

He stayed quiet until she finished, and he was about to turn to get changed into normal clothes when she said she needed a few more things. He turned back around and offered her his hand, brow raised at the idea of sporting a tome and a staff. “You can just grab a pair of my boots by the door.”

“Ohh! Thank you, thank you!” She beamed a smile at him while picking up several of the pins on her table, each were then stuck into her sewing tomato. Her crating area was a mess but at least it was an organized mess where she knew where almost everything was at unless it fell on the floor; always the last place she looked it seemed. Fortunately, between big projects the room was kept clean more so for Harvey’s sake than her own.

“It’ll be a great chance for me to try one of those tutorials I found. There’s a way to just make a boot sleeve basically, although…” She paused, lips pursed in contemplation. “I don’t think stretchy fabric will work so I might need to use a hidden zipper up the back seam.” Should work well enough. Would at least make it for easy storage between conventions.

“Anywho, once you’re dressed, do you wanna grab some lunch with me?” Mel felt famished since she’d skipped breakfast earlier.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 05, 2023 11:28 pm

He wiggled his hand in her face as she asked about lunch. He was inclined to say “yes” but he didn’t want to have to come back just so she could trace his hand later. “You said you needed my hand?”

“Ah, yes please.” Melody grabbed a sketch book off her bookshelf, opened it to a blank page, and snatched a mechanical pencil from her desk. “I admit, I’m not used to you being so… so amicable.” Poked him playfully in the shoulder with the eraser. “I can get used to it.”
PostPosted: Wed Jul 05, 2023 11:29 pm

He squinted slightly at the idea that he was being so pliable with her requests for these costumes. In truth he did owe her for saving his skin not too long ago, but one would have to choke him into admitting that. Instead he blinked, expression none-too-keen to the thought of her getting used to this version of him.

“Don’t get too used to it,” he said simply, taking his hand back as soon as she was done with it. He turned to leave then, glancing back only to say, “Gimme a minute to get changed. I’ll meet you by the door.”

Melody considered his words but ultimately shrugged and dismissed the idea completely. “Go, go!” Waived her hands dismissively and shooed him off.

Although it had been a while, she did remember from college that there was a time to bug Harvey and a time to leave him to his own devices. Particularly when he was deep into a coding project or graphic design. She knew more than anyone that when a muse strikes you have to hold onto it with all you have because once it’s gone then there was no knowing when the itch to complete the project would come back again.

That’s one thing about him she admired, the passion for his trades were much like her own. Never had she seen him tackle something half-assed and in those moments of needed concentration the best she could do was make sure he didn’t forget to eat and maybe just leave a plate of something on his desk beside him.

“I’ll wait for you in the car.” After grabbing her side bag, Melody plucked her keys from the hook on the wall and went outside until he was ready and joined her.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 05, 2023 11:30 pm

He didn’t appreciate the shoo-ing but he left it alone, choosing instead to hurry up and get out of the costume. No sense in dressing like a video game warrior for longer than he needed to.

It took a maximum of five minutes for him to get changed, though there was a bit of added time since he was careful with the costume. Even if he wasn’t a huge fan of cosplaying, he still had a lot of respect for the level of craftsmanship that went into it. Particularly so for all the costumes that Mel had made for him. He wouldn’t just toss it aside out of dislike. No, he was always mindful. Even if he was starting to really feel the hunger. He carefully brought it back to her studio and laid it out neatly for her before heading down to the car.

He buckled in, looked thoughtful for a second, then turned to her.

“Chinese or Greek?”
