The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn’t be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it’s incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it’s just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there’s something undeniably magical about it.

Illyria hadn't been aware of the first few streaks of light that shot across the clear sky. But by the time that she had managed to scurry onto the roof of a building that quite near to the outskirts of the DCU Campus she was quite taken aback by the breathtaking sight that was occurring in the celestial heavens that lay just above her. Originally the plan had been to stop and check her cache that was just beyond the university grounds but she simply couldn't will herself to move from this spot just yet.

It seemed as if there were others on the grassy areas of the university just enjoying the meteor shower as well but Illyria for the moment was just as enraptured by the light show in the sky. Occasionally her gaze would pick out an excited individual down below and she'd give a cheshire cat-like grin before chuckling under her breath. It was definitely not the type of show that someone got to see very often and Illyria was going to enjoy it for all that she was worth. Once the display was over than she could decide what to do next. One moment she was alone and then there was a certain flare of energy that had the Mauvian shifting position before taking a guarded stance. It felt like an Order signature but what was their view on cats.

There were a few advantages that were offered by his knight form that he had discovered over the years.

For one, that while as faculty he did regularly have roof access if he really wanted it, he didn't need to walk up the stairs to get it anymore. Which meant that if there was say, a meteor shower he wanted to get a good view of, all he had to do once he got off shift was become Promethei and hop up on the roof.

He didn't quite sense the Mauvian nearby, and didn't notice that someone else was watching on the roof until he got closer to the edge and noticed something was just a bit off at the side of his... Aura sense? It felt oddly small for an aura, and he could only recall a few times as a knight he has felt an aura that small--

Oh! A cat!

Imhotep would be delighted.

"Watching the meteor shower too?"

Well it seemed as if this newcomer to the roof that she was currently on wasn't against cats. That was always a bonus in her eyes. Illyria would have answered right away but a rather spectacular meteor blazed across the sky just then and Illyria's attention was drawn to the display before she willed her gaze to meet that of the stranger. For a moment she took in the outfit of whomever it was before pushing off from the resting position that she had been maintaining before she gave the biggest of stretches. Almost silently did the Mauvian complete a circuit around the stranger before she sat her rump back down on the roof.

"I guess you could call it watching. Technically I got distracted on my way from point A to point B by the shower."

Cat-whiskers twitched momentarily before a yawn interrupted her speech and she lowered her eyes for a second before returning them to stare into the eyes of the one that had addressed her, "but I am enjoying what I've seen so far. It's so strange. I didn't hear about this much at all. Did you?"

Illyria's mind was trying to puzzle out what this stranger was before she caught sight of the symbols that adorned the coat that the man wore, "Mercurian-aligned, are we?"

The spectacular meteor caught Promethei's attention too, and he couldn't even blame the Mauvian for her distraction. That was what they were both there on the roof for, right? The beautiful vantage point that only being up this high could offer, away from the bustle of the city below?

He would never pretend he was a country boy. He was born in Texas, yes, but he was born in San Antonio. A long history with the scouts, even if he had intentionally stepped away from them, was deep in his bones, though. He wouldn't deny that sometimes he had a deep set urge to just get away from the city and go be one with nature for a bit.

Without taking a small sabbatical from work, nights like this were the best way to feel in touch with it again. And he needed it, considering the stress of his reality lately, a seesaw between losing one of his husbands and regaining him with a mixture of betrayal in the interim.'

"Honestly, that's valid. This here meteor shower sure is distracting." He laughed. "In a good way, though."

He decided now was as good of a time as any to sit down so he could look up. "I heard a bit. Academic, so some of my professional fellows like to talk about these anomalies. They claim it's something in the atmosphere." Promethei found himself inclined to believe it was magic, considering his entire life, but that was ... neither here nor there, he supposed. Let the astrologists figure that one out. He was primarily interested in whatever chemicals in the atmosphere could be causing a rainbow effect--

"Oh, yup, Mercurian. Promethei of Mercury specifically. You?"

Illyria found her whiskers twitching a little in amusement as she continued to keep one eye on the stranger and the other on her surroundings before turning both of her violet orbs as Promethei offered up his name and confirmed that he was of Mercury. Illyria pondered her next move before turning to face the Mercurian knight before offering her left paw up to shake if he inclined to do so. "Order Mauvian Illyria. Pleased to meet you."

And she was pleased. It was always interesting to meet new people that she'd never seen before and Promethei was just so lucky to fit into that niche this evening. Illyria's ears twitched at the ruckus of the people below before her gaze shot back towards the sky.

"I guess I was too preoccupied with other things and maybe that's what kept me from hearing about this very beautiful display being put on above. It seems like, at times, Mother Nature's putting on her version of fireworks. ... Although, maybe not Mother Nature, but the universe, does that make sense?"

She hoped it did otherwise what would Promethei think of her. She ducked her head for a moment before realizing that she had nothing to be ashamed of. If he didn't agree, then that was totally fine. It was her own opinion and she had shared it with someone who just five minutes before had been a total stranger.

He could tell by the fact that the small aura did not feel unpleasant that he was sitting next to an Order Mauvian, but he wouldn't complain about the confirmation. His relation to them up until recently had been relatively limited--he had requested one fix his ring at some point, but until Teegan started living with him, that capped out his experience with them. But the Mauvians seemed to have incredible useful talents, considering that one of them was helping his ... husband? still? set up a whole damn new life.

Promethei never wanted to use that talent ever again, but it was good to have people with that knowledge in his contacts.

Illyria seemed to be leaning a bit toward his magical thoughts considering her phrasing, and his gaze flicked over toward her as she ducked her head down. "Yeah, I think it does. Scientists are trying to find the scientific explanation, but perhaps there's something a bit less chemically caused and more magically caused by the universe." Of course, wouldn't a lot of their ancient scientific predecessors consider current scientific knowledge and technology magic?

The existence of magic complicated things, but as a chemist he deeply wished to understand the why. Perhaps there was a scientific explanation stronger than souls are physical things.

"Magic actually existing complicates finding some answers. Chemistry hasn't quite figured that out yet, and," he laughed, "not like my department would authorize me making a research project based on chemical explanations for magic. They'd call me a quack. Do wish I could figure out what the universe did to actually turn these rainbow, though..."

Illyria was quite content to stare down at the grassy knoll as Promethei spoke but she had to chuckle softly at his response. Her gaze locked onto one individual who had just pointed up as another shooting star crossed the sky with a loud whoop before she caught the tail end of the streaking object before she sighed with whimsy. The idea of running experiments to see what would be the chemical makeup of magic was amusing and she laughed before wondering if that would be the correct response.

"I'm not exactly sure there can be such a chemical formula for some of the things that we powered individuals see on a day to day basis. How would one go on to try and find answers for what our race can do, or a knight's magic or a senshi's magic for that instance."

Illyria grimaced. There would be also no way to explain what the negaverse or Dark Mirror Senshi could do. And what about the Velencians? No, perhaps trying to find a chemical formula for magic would be nigh impossible.

"If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been fighting for?"

"If there is a chemical formula or at least a physics explanation, I'd like to find that." Promethei couldn't help a laugh. "But I suppose that's just me as a professor talking. I'd like to know the explanation for these events, to the magic, to the bizarre events, to starseeds. Could upturn everything we know about science as we know it."

No one in the scientific community would believe him as of now, but it would feel personally good. Maybe it would be something he could share with the Mauvians.

... he really was a damn academic.

Her question brought him out of his academia wonderings, as he pulled himself out and back through how long he had been fighting. Felt like too long and yet not long enough. "Was first drained back in 2018? Wasn't a knight at that point, though. I awoke about a month before the Negaverse hijacked those Velencian machines if you remember that."

Hijacked was a misnomer, admittedly. The tall buff one had enabled it.

"My husband Imhotep awoke the same day."

Illyria considered the desire that Promethei shared with her before she nodded in agreement, "I think most people want explanations for the craziness that seems to crop up now and then. I remember being sucked into a weird dimension during the past Halloween season with a die as the culprit." Her violet orbs shone as she spoke but she still shuddered. That place had been not a location that she wished to return to.

At the mention of the Velencian machines Illyria sighed, "Yeah, I remember that battle. I was there. I'd come to help out and do what I could do. Nearly died though as a result when things went to pieces."

Illyria glanced back to the skies again. The light show above seemed to be winding down. Not many meteors were streaking across the sky anymore. Those people who were watching on the grounds were starting to pack up their belongings and the feline brought her gaze back down to Promethei, "I know a lot of lives were changed that night, mine included."
