There were certain items that could only be found in the earthling villages. Trading had been opening up in Zinris, but it was still limited compared to the contacts earthlings had with each other. On a trip to one of those towns, Kyrrha had stepped away from her mother to look down another aisle. Earthlings had such weird products in their shops...

Alfina walked into the shop and was shocked to see an Elarian inside! This one looked even more intimidating than most, so she was glad to give her a wide berth. As she went down another aisle, she realized there was another Elarian here as well! A much smaller one.. a youngling? Well, the things she wanted were in this aisle and the youngling was not as intimidating as the adults...
"Excuse me," she murmured softly and she reached for a bag of flour.

Kyrrha picked up a container and shook it curiously. She couldn't read what the labels said, so it was more a guessing game to see if she could figure out what was inside. The content rattled lightly... Perhaps some kind of nut?
The voice made her look over with surprise. "What's that?" She asked, pointing to the flour.

Alfina blinked a couple times and held up the bag. "It's flour. We use it to make bread and other food." She frowned slightly. She missed baking as much as she used to. "Did you need some?"

Kyrrha cocked her head. "Why are flowers in a bag? What do you use them for?" She set the container down and picked up one of the other bags of flour. "No, I was just curious."

Alfina paused a moment. What did the girl mean? "It's not flowers. It's flour. It's made of ground wheat." She couldn't help a small smile. That was cute. "What is it you're shopping for then?"

Kyrrha frowned with confusion. "Then why don't you just call it ground wheat then? It sounds like you're eating actual flowers!" It certainly made for an easy mix-up. "Oh, Mata says there are spices here from other places. We can't get them back home."

Alfina chuckled and shrugged. "Actually, I don't know the reason. I can see why it would be confusing. There are edible flowers out there, though. I've used them in meals before. They make the dishes look pretty." She looked over at the other aisle where she could see the older Elarian just over the top. "That's Mata? What's your name?"

Kyrrha's eyes widened. She had never thought to just put flowers onto a dish. Her family was less concerned with how a meal looked than how it tasted and the health of it. "Yeah. Mata probably won't come say hi though." Mata was strange about earthlings, but at least she was willing to come to the village!
"I'm Kyrrha." She looked at Alfina and cocked her head. "Do they have those eating flowers here?"

Alfina's smile turned with a slight wince and she took a small step back. She had been raised to fear the Elarians, and hearing she would be avoided made her want to put a little space between the youngling and herself. She certainly didn't want to irritate the adult!
"Kyrrha. That's a pretty name. I'm Alfina." Not that she would ever see the youngling again, surely.. but it was polite. "Actually, I think they do sell them here. Would you like to find some?"

Kyrrha's expression warmed with delight to the compliment, oblivious to the earthling's concerns. "Thanks! Mata says she named me after my Aunt Pyrrha. She doesn't live here, but I get to write her letters."
Her head cocked slightly. "Alfina? ...That's interesting." She couldn't say she liked the name, but she couldn't say that out loud! "Yeah! I bet Mata would let me put them on our food tonight if I asked her to."

Alfina couldn't help a smile. It was always so nice to hear about families being close enough for such traditions. Who would have thought that the Elarians had such bonds?
Interesting? Alfina wasn't sure what to make of that... "Okay. They're probably in the next aisle over." Considering that the youngling was almost as tall as she was, Alfina didn't feel the need for any hand holding to guide the girl around. "See those leafy purple plants there? I think the flowers are next to those."

Kyrrha followed Alfina without hesitation, eyes flicking along the shelves as they walked. With the target pointed out, she did a couple long skips to arrive at the display. Indeed, there were quite a few shallow baskets lined with leaves and flowers. "It it all of these?"

Alfina glanced at the adult, and then followed Kyrrha while still leaving plenty of space between them. "Yup. Everything in that basket is something you can eat. If you get enough, you can make your plates look really intricate and pretty."

Kyrrha leaned closer to the flowers to inspect them. They would certainly make the food look more interesting! "They're almost too pretty to eat," she observed. She frowned and looked back at Alfina. "Why make what you're gonna eat look so pretty?"
