He knew he should have been paying more attention to where he was going but his head had been buried in the clouds. As usual, honestly. Daydreaming was like his default. Now he was busy running away from a very angry Kinfa. Apparently he’d gotten too close to their nest without realizing it.

She was busy cutting the string pieces she’d need to wrap a bundle of kindling when she noticed the large bird in the sky. It appeared to be angry at something. Or someone. She hadn’t noticed any nest close to her so she figured she was safe. So when she started to really look she noticed a young boy running away from it. “Oh no..” She muttered.

He huffed as he jumped over a rock that was in his way but once his feet hit the ground he continued to book it. No way was he stopping. Those over sized birds scared him on a good day and right now he was terrified of it. Add in that it was angry enough to cause some damage and he wasn’t having it. Running was the only thing on his mind now.

Seeing as the boy didn’t look like he knew how to really defend himself, or could for that matter since he had no weapon, she decided to help him a little. Ming set down the string and put away her knife so that she could grab her crossbow. Her sight had been fading over the years but she could still see a huge bird in the sky. Once she had it pointed in the right direction she pulled the trigger to send a bolt at the Kinfa in warning.

He had no idea there was anyone close enough around to be helpful so he didn’t notice the bolt that flew at the bird. All he knew was he felt the gust of wind from the wings when it adjusted course to avoid it. He let out a small shriek and waved to the side, hit footing getting a bit loose and causing him to stumble. “Not today. Not today. Not today!” He really didn’t want to become bird food today.

She saw the bird move out of the way and frowned. That meant she’d need to load up another one. So she did just that. She tried to keep an eye on the boy who was running as well. He made a noise and she looked concerned for him. Quick as she could she took aim again and fired off another crossbow bolt at the Kinfa.

With the second bolt the Kinfa got the hint and screeched at the boy instead. Though it didn’t seem to want to proceed with its pursuit. Instead it veered off course and headed back to its nest. That left the windling to slow down before eventually stopping in his full on sprint so he could fall to the ground and pant. “Oh thank you..” He said breathily to which ever higher power had spared him.

She arched a brow at the boy as she watched his little display of thanks. “You’re welcome.” Was all she could say. She didn’t think he knew she was there so it would be interesting to see his reaction. She put her crossbow back down and reached for the string she’d been messing with previously.

When he heard the voice of someone he jumped. The boy had been under the impression he was all alone. He leaned back on his heels and looked around before he spotted the lady that had apparently scared the Kinfa off. “Oh. I thought I was the only one out here.” His right hand reached up to scratch the side of his neck with a bit of nervousness.

“So did I.” She smirked at his comment. “Imagine my surprise when I see a kid being chased by a Kinfa.” She cut the string to size and went to work on wrapping it around the bundle she’d been working on previously. “What’d you do to make it angry?” Was he trying to steal a kinfa egg? That would be dangerous.

He flushed a little at the mention of being chased by the giant bird. While it had happened it was still embarrassing. “I uh.. Wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” He offered up a nervous laugh. “Got too close to the nest.” It was purely an accident. Not like he wanted to do that.

She felt both brows lift up as he explained what had happened. “You should pay better attention. That could have ended badly.” The boy could have gotten hurt. She looked up from her kindling bundle to judge his reaction before looking back down. She needed one more string to keep it all together. So she started to measure it out.

“Yeah.” He laughed a little. “Thankfully you were out here to help me.” If she hadn’t been he didn’t want to think about what could have happened. Likely he’d be bird food or laying injured somewhere with no one around to help out. He really didn’t like that idea. Especially since his family didn’t know which direction he’d gone.

“Pure luck that I was. I wasn’t planning on coming this way but I decided to get kindling now rather than later.” The boy was very lucky about that. Normally she’d have saved that task for later but she’d finished her other things early. “If you’re going to daydream maybe you should stick to the main pathways. No kinfa nests near those.” She motioned toward the larger path some ways away from them.

He turned his head to look at where she pointed before looking back and nodding his head at her. “Probably a good idea.” He’d have to be sure to use that on his way home. “I really am thankful for your help though. I didn’t want to be bird food.” He slowly got up off the ground now that he was safe and no longer huffing for air.
