The Fireflies (6) : In the warm summer nights, little glowing lights begin to bob and dart through the city. Fireflies are mating, so this isn't uncommon in itself; in the past few days you've probably seen hundreds of fireflies. What makes these lights so unique is that they seem to change color; you might see a blue one, a green one, a red one. They flicker randomly, and something just seems off with them. If you come into contact with one, you will find yourself with a strange electric jolt. They cannot be caught, and will flicker away if you pursue too aggressively. This isn’t the first time they’ve appeared in Destiny City, but no one’s been able to tell where they came from or where they’re going. No matter how quickly you chase them, they always seem to disappear before you can find any answers.

He had a lot on his mind. So, so much. And it all revolved around a little boy and his mother. A little boy he had actually learned about roughly one year ago. The paperwork that he was handed gave him some idea of what the duo went through over the last several years. None of it particularly wonderful if the file had everything in it. An unwed mother struggling to make ends meet without the safety or protection of her family. A child who was growing up without a father, even as his mom worked herself to the bone to provide for them both. Quinn’s child. A child he had known nothing about until last year, a kid he couldn’t even be 100 percent certain was his even if he felt it in his bones. The kid was his… he just needed to be able to prove it legally.

But he didn’t want to just trample on or dismiss the hardships that Patty had faced all this time. He couldn’t just stroll into their lives one day and be like ‘Here I am to save the day!’ It wasn’t right. It wasn’t fair. And while Quinn might be an a*****e sometimes he wasn’t that big of a one. So that's why he was sitting on a park bench, trying to contemplate his next move. He really needed to figure it out because time was slipping away and he really didn’t want it to escape completely. Too much was at stake here for him to delay too long.

As he was sitting there running every conceivable scenario through his head, absently fiddling with a little sapphire star charm he had been handed earlier, the sun set and the fireflies and crickets started to come out. His mind continued to circle around and around as the darkness really settled in. It wasn’t until the flashes of lights from the lighting bugs came super close that Quinn finally looked around. At first he found it pretty but as he sat there watching he noticed that the yellowish glow from the bugs weren’t the only color. There was a blue one… and a green one… red too! Like little multicolored LED lights. They lit up the park’s green field as they danced through the air, searching for a mate. Their lights flashing on and off in all different colors. It wasn’t just pretty, it was quite magical.

Absently the young, or rather not so young any more, man reached out a hand towards the closest light. He wasn’t planning on catching it, or even chasing it as he used to do as a child, but he just wanted to know. What were these lights? Were they really just lighting bugs? Or something else? Something more malevolent maybe? Could something so pretty and magical be ‘evil’? In this city? It was entirely possible but then again there seemed to be no real reason for the fireflies to change color, nor did he feel any different.

They were just pretty. No harm intended.

That last thought was slightly adjusted when a little blue flash by his outstretched hand gave him a little zap. The bug apparently didn’t particularly like how close he was to touching it and gave him a little static shock.

So they were pretty and mostly harmless… as long as you didn’t mess with them.

Good to know.
