It was early morning, she sighed and rolled out of bed. She had things to do today so she could not afford to sleep too late. She got ready and went out into the predawn light. It was cold and still and quiet. So quiet it was rather earie. She came upon another shadow in the night that materialized into her cousin. They looked like cousins though they were not actually blood related. "Morn cousin."

"Good morn, a bit colder than I thought it would be." He draped a poncho over her shoulders. "Made by our local Kahi family, I have no idea how they get the fabric this soft but I am not complaining." They were to go fishing today. They headed out to the little dingy used for the purpose.

"Aye tis cold this early, even here, I'd hate to see what the colder places are like in early morning." Matori was tropical by nature being more of a warm and windy place than anything else. "I wonder if we will catch anything." She had packed all of the bait just in case. She was rather looking forward to this trip.

"That is the eternal mystery of fishing, you never know what or if you are going to catch." He liked it but mostly because he used fishing to think, though it was a hoot when something actually tagged your line. "Look, the stars are still out. This is so cool." Regularly they were not allowed out this early/late but in Matori certain sacrifices had to be made while fishing.

They headed out in the little boat, as it was dark, neither of them noticed the large angry thunderhead until it was too late and the wind whisked them far down the coast, now instead of fishing it was a fight to get back to shore and safety from drowning. "I kinda wish we had gills like Kahis at this point." She gripped the gunwhales like her life depended on it, which it kinda did.

"This was not how I wanted to spend this morning," He did his best to row and not snap or loose the oars. He was paddling hard, pushing his body as far as it would go. "Careful! Here comes a big wave!" The big wave at least shoved them close to shore and it was only heraculean effort that prevented the boat from capsizing, Ushiruin managed to get it to hit the boat at just the right angle.

She was wet and quit miserable because of how cold it was. She wished for blankets and sweaters and hot tea, none of which was currently on hand. No matter how hard Ushiruin tried the ocean did what it wanted with their little boat. She was about ready to sulk properly something someone with such a sunny personality should never have to do.

"Don't worry Tahn, we will get out of this, I promise." The alternative was too grizzly to consider at the moment. He snarled as the wind and waves ripped the oar out of his hand, he caught it again but he didn't think he was making any headway. The storm had gotten too intense too quickly. There was still a long way to shore. All the other ships were at berth or anchor. They were alone and miserable.

They fought the wind and storm. She took a turn at the oars when Ushiruin tired too far. Then they hit beach. But it was the beach of a small island, not the mainland. They were exhausted and barely were able to rescue the craft and drag it up the beach. They took the oars with them and basically used them as walking sticks as they scrambled up the sand.

It was hard to talk or see, so communication was limited. First priority as always was finding some shelter and trying to conserve body heat.
He was so tired that his muscles felt like spaghetti, no doubt hers did as well. He wrapped a spaghetti arm around her and together they made their way into the tree line. It was dangerous but there was little shelter on the beach itself.

They found a cave thankfully. And she slid into it gratefully with her oar. She had grabbed a few things that were not completely soaked in order to potentially start a fire. Her Dad had given her flint and knife and she never went anywhere without them like a good travellers daughter. She set to work on a fire immediately because it could take time.

He slid in after Tahnee and slumped to the floor. He had pushed it too far to try and save their lives so he supposed he had pushed just far enough. He stayed where he was while Tahnee got the fire going. "You go girl." She was doing very well with it too, there was already faint smoke. "Skills!" He couldn't do much more than mutter encouragement. His eyes were trying to close but he was too chilled to sleep.

She shrieked in delight when a baby flame was born. "I am Lady of the Flame!." Carefully she fed it bits of dry grass and bark, some of which had thankfully fallen into the cave because dry tinder in a bad storm was hard to come by, she had had to break into an old log earlier. But she was happy with her resourcefulness because poor Ushiruin was toast. She had never seen him this weak.

He watched her and was happy when the flame started. He was ashamed to say that he fell asleep and the increasing warmth in the cave did not help. He was happy that Tahnee was with him but sad that she had been dragged into this mess with him.
He awoke and said, "I'm sorry." in a dejected tone.

She set everything up as much as possible, even peeking out of the cave, hoping that the storm would dump a fresh carcass right outside the door which of course didn't happen. She was getting hungry.
"Don't be sorry I know the risk of getting on the ocean during storm season. Were you not just caught out the other day too?"
