Quote:
Radio Waves (14) : In the ever-expanding metropolis of Destiny City, there’s always a need for more cell towers. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a problem, except since the last batch went live, some people have been reporting an increase in weird messages to their phones. Strange, nonsensical texts, or voicemails, or even a few shadowy video calls have been reported, but the evidence never lasts. Almost immediately after receiving the message, it disappears. Prank calls–sure. But the weird thing is that some people have been reporting getting weird messages without their phone, like they’re being transmitted directly into their brain. The messages are always in another language and it always feels like someone is yelling at you. If it’s a practical joke, it’s a good one.

Ian had heard some people were having issues with tgheir phones; but who didn't? He got span messages all the time and every so often his phone would have an issue due to an update, or due to not updating it for a while. Things happened when tech was involved, it wasn't anything new.

Today though had been strange, even by Ian's standards, as he was going out to spend some time with Yukio and the whole drive over to the small dive of a cafe had seen his phone vibrating and ringing. He really didn't know just what was going on but when he was parked he took f ew minuets to look over his phone. So many calls from unknown numbers with voice messages left, eahc one sounding more and more bizzare and just not human. Some sounded more machine, like a voice changer, than anything but a really bad one.

The text messages were just as baffling and he was taking screen pictures as fast as he could in the hopes of showing them to his friend and seeing if they couldn't perhaps figure it out later tonight once they were both home and behind a computer screen.

Once he'd managed to screen cap everything he could, and try and save other things, he hurried out of his car and headed for the small dive in the wall palce. It was a small little place with creeking wooden floors, mismatched everything, but the food was amazing in the place. The drinks were also good but Ian went there, fairly often, for the food. The place wasn't a cafe so much as a...resteraunt, though he wasn't sure that word worked well either but dinner certainly didn't fit either. It was a dive.

Yukio often got text messages and voicemails from randos who managed to get his number from club owners and the like through some manner of bribery or deception or just by chatting them up over a drink. He largely ignored them and blocked the sender; they were usually requests for songs or people fangirl/fanboying him, which were good for his ego, but sometimes they were offers for gigs, and those he paid attention to.

Lately, though, some of these messages were just weird, even by his standards. Strange voices that sounded as though they'd been run through a voice changer of some kind leaving bizarre nonsensical messages, odd gibberish texts. What was weird was how they vanished off his phone almost as quickly as he read or listened to them, as if the sender suddenly changed their mind and recalled the messages. He'd tried saving some of them to show to Ian, and actually managed to screencap a few of the texts, but he wasn't quite fast enough to copy them before they disappeared.

Walking up to the dive joint that he was meeting Ian at, he went inside and quickly spotted his friend. He'd never been to this place, but if Ian said it was good, then it was worth the adventure. With a wave he approached the booth and slid into the worn vinyl seat opposite him, grabbing a menu as he settled across from his fellow hacker.

"Interesting decor," Yukio noted wryly, lowering his ever-present little round shades and raising one eyebrow. "Fairly quaint. How did you find this place?"

Watching as Yukio arrived and approached Ian was pulling out his phone, ready to show the other the messages he'd been getting. The few he'd managed to screen cap, thankfully he'd been fast enough a few times, he hadn't been able to get ahold of the voice messages so he couldn't share them with his friend. He would have asked him to run some programs on it, since the other was better with that sort of thing, and see if he couldn't find what the real voice behind them was.

As Yukio sat down he nodde dhis head once to the others question. "I don't really like places with lots of people. I don't like common or popular places." He tended towards these dives. "If they fit the bill and have good food I'm down for it. They have truffle fries here and ones done in duck fat." Rather than regular oil and such. The fries were gormet and high end as was the rest of the food, if the fries were good the rest had to make that same level of gormet.

"Order whatever you want." It would be on him, which he wasn't saying but figured the other would assume that.

"Have you been getting strange messages on your phone? I didn't want to mention it in the discord, I don't want others getting worried baout the government or anything like that." Some in there group should be wearing a tin foil hat if you asked Ian. If he mentioned strange messages around them he could see them freaking out and going to ground, in some manner, and thinking he'd been found out and they were next. He had waited till now to ask Yukio in person about it, to compare notes.

Both of Yukio's eyebrows went up, a sure sign that something Ian said had gotten his attention. "You had me at truffle fries," he deadpanned, picking up the menu. Sure enough, everything on the menu seemed high-end and gourmet. That would teach him to judge a dive by its decor. He'd meandered past this place often, without giving it a second glance. "Hmmm. I think I'll try the mushroom burger. I can't resist good mushrooms, and if they're using cremini mushrooms, that's a big plus to me. And thank you for picking up the tab on this, though you really don't have to," he added with the faintest of smiles.

He listened as Ian got down to cases and nodded. "Yeah, I have been. Don't blame you for keeping it off the Discord, either – some of our tinfoil-hat comrades would really freak out about it. Though if we've been getting these messages, it's quite likely they have been too." Pulling out his phone, he scrolled through his screencaps of what few text messages he had managed to save and stopped at a representative example. "Here's a 'shot of one of the text messages – just got it before it vanished, which is really ******** weird." He handed Ian his phone so his friend could see. "I really wanted to save the voice messages, you know, to sample them for my mixes, but they disappeared even more quickly."

Thinking a little bit, he mused, "Though maybe I could just record myself reading one of those messages…. Hmmm…."

Yukio chuffed a sigh and shook his head slightly to get his focus back on the messages themselves. "Whatever, they're really strange messages. The voice messages sound like someone ran their voice through an effects rack – given a bit of time, I could probably figure out what filters they used, but I'm thinking we don't have a lot of time, you know?"

Laughing at the others reaction to truffle fries, that normally would get peoples attention, Ian himself already knew what he was going to get. The food here was good, with a proper trained chef, but they for whatever reason they didn't want to work in a resteraunt. Rather they seemed content to work in a dive like this in order to bring gormet cooking to people who normally wouldn't experience it. This place was worth the trip to it, especially since a lot of people bypassed this place, it wasn't the most crowded of places.

"Provided they are from here. I wonder if it's not a Destiny City thing only." So their tin foil hat friends might not be, lucky them, but maybe they were unlucky as well and they too lived in this city.

"I tried as well, I was going to ask you to run the audios and see if you could get anything from them. They vanished too fast. I did manage to screen cap some of the texts though." Offering the other his own phone in return, while looking through Yukio's phone at the same time.

"Mmm, I agree. I don't think we'll get the time to go over the voice messages. I've no doubt you could figure them out if we had the time, I suppose for whoever is behind this it's a good thing we can't save them." Because than they could, between the two of them, find out who this person was. It might take time but Ian was sure he could find the person in the end. "At least it's not just me going through this. Have you had any video calls yet? Because I'm expecting that'll happen at some point." Maybe that would help? Maybe they could save that somehow?

"None of what's written or said makes a bit of sense either, it's not a language I know. I ran the text messages through google translate and other programs - nothing. I can't figure this out." And for someone like Ian, given his talents, it was fustrating to say the least. He'd spent hours trying to figure this out and checking forums to see if anyone had anything about this - nothing. Everything had come up empty.

"You know, it probably is just here," Yukio nodded. That meant the more paranoid of their little circle of hacker friends who didn't live in Destiny City wouldn't be experiencing the strange messages. There was always something odd going on around Star Festival, and he wondered if this wasn't part of this year's weirdness.

Taking Ian's phone, he looked at the texts his friend had gotten. They seemed to be along the same lines as the ones he'd gotten himself – gibberish that made even the most nonsensical AI-generated spam look like Shakespeare. As Ian was saying, it didn't even look like English, or any other known language. It was all confusing and mysterious as hell.

He handed Ian back his phone and retrieved his own. "No, I haven't gotten any video messages. Yet. You're probably right, that'll probably happen next. Damn," he nearly snarled, "I wish I could grab one of those voice messages. Between the two of us, we'd have it cracked in no time. I'll just have to be faster."

As he sat there thinking about the messages, it was almost as if he could hear them in his mind. The gibberish, the yelling, the altered voice… His eyes unfocused, and as he stared blankly down at the table, the voice filtered directly into his mind like some kind of sub-cranial receiver had been implanted in his head. It was more clear than the voicemails, wavering in and out but still yelling, still the weird altered tone. Then it stopped, as suddenly as it had started, and Yukio finally blinked and sat up.

"s**t, Ian, something just spoke in my head. Like the voicemail messages." Shaking his head to clear it, he pushed his little round shades back up to conceal his eyes so Ian wouldn't see how rattled he was. "That was really weird."

"I wonder if anything is similar, if we have any of the same words. I just wish we could figure it out somehow, like if it were some sort of a code." He hated this not knowing and not being able to solve the puzzle, it was like trying to hack something and hitting a wall. he wanted to get past it but he just couldn't.

He had been about to say something when he noted the other looking off, and not just a little off, but something was going on. Worried for his friend he did reach out to touch his shoulder. The waitress was heading there way, to take food orders, and he motioned her back for a moment. This was not a good time.

When Yukio seemed to come back to himself he sat back in his seat. "You had me worried." For obvious reasons. "You heard it...lin your head. Now that's a whole new level of strange." And not good really. Toyhing with his phone, nervous energy, he placed his order as soon as the waitress approached their table again. "That sounds mildly dangerous. But if it's in our heads now, or at least yours, than something with radio waves is going on...but how. How to send out waves into peoples minds..." He wans't the best when it came to radio waves and such things but he wished he was. He wished they could figure this out.

"It looked scary for a moment there."

"I mean, I've heard of people hearing radio signals in their heads through their dental work," Yukio said after placing his order with the waitress, "but this was… yeah, a whole new level of strange." He took a drink of water and pushed his hair off his face. "I had me worried too."

He looked up at Ian over the tops of his shades. "Yeah, it was kind of scary. That weird voice yelling at me…"

Picking up his phone, he began thumbing his way through various local social media. "But I agree, it's got to be some kind of radio signal. I'm checking the local Reddit to see if anyone else has gotten it in their heads like that, cause I'm fairly certain just about anyone with a cellphone has been getting the text messages and voicemails. I'm just really concerned about how they're transmitting this stuff directly into people's heads. Ah," he said, "here's one. Says they were asleep and heard it in their dreams, then they woke up and could still hear it. Like it was yelling right in their ear. A few comments saying they had something similar happen."

Yukio placed his phone face-down on the table when the waitress came back with their drinks. He'd gotten a beer, and she brought a glass with it, but he just took the bottle and drank deeply. He couldn't figure this out. How on earth were they doing this?

Then something occurred to him. "I think," he mused aloud, "maybe this isn't Earth technology." Keeping his voice low, he leaned across the table so Ian could hear him. "We have aliens among us now, right? Alien Senshi? Maybe this is something they'd know about…"

"I've heard of that but never thought that was true, I didn't even look into it becuase it seemed so impossible." But was it actually possible? he could only assume thsoe people might want to get their dental work fixed if they were picking up radio signals, he knew he would.

"I assume it sounded similar to what the text messages read as - meaning not english." The text messages and voice mails were certainly not English but also not any other known language. "Is there anyway to look up made up languages? Not klingon but other ones?" Since some languages in books, and movies, was actually something a person could learn to speak. Some work really went into some of these fictional languages that perhaps someone had taken it too far?

Taking his own drink, he's actually gone with a beer as well, he decided to ignore the glass also. This conversation had him not really feeling like pouring his drink, he didn't really want to go slow on dirnking either to be honest. "Mmm, maybe especially if other people are having this happen. Maybe we should see if we can't find one of them, or maybe a Mauvian and see if they might have a clue?" Keeping his voice low as he spoke, just incase, it would just be his luck that a Negaverse officer worked here and would overhear them. "This has to be something." Something which they could figure out if given the time.

"Yeah, it was that same non-language or whatever it is." He could still hear it in his head, shouting and ranting as if angry, and he suppressed a shudder. That had been too weird.

Taking off his aviator's hat – a sure sign he was stressed, because he rarely removed his hats in public – Yukio ran a hand through his blue hair, then put the hat back on. He looked at Ian over the tops of his shades and raised an eyebrow. "Conlangs? Yeah, there are whole groups online who create or recreate made-up languages. Like the language from that show Expanse." Falling silent for a moment, he thought. Could the gibberish be a conlang? "We should start going through the conlang forums and Reddit or whatever to see if anyone might know something. Or might already be trying to translate it."

He took another drink of his beer and nodded. "Hadn't thought of that," he said, keeping his voice low as well. "Getting in touch with a Mauvian would be a great idea. They're techy little guys, from my experience with them." Granted, it had only been the one Mauvian, Darius Ammun, but the cat had upgraded his signet ring from just blueprints so it now had all the bells and whistles. "I'm sure you've met more than I have, since you're a Senshi."

Whatever they did, they'd have to move fast – Yukio had a feeling this was only going to last for the duration of Star Festival…

"Yeah, I wonder if it's a conlang maybe? One we're not familiar with but perhaps someone took one and expanded on it?" Someone who was good with language, obviously, but it wasn't an impossible thing really. "Yeah, that might be a good place to start. I'd say run through the words from the text messages and see if any conlangs pop for us but I don't know if that'll work if it's someone else expanding on one, and not posting about it."

Shaking his head at the other he sighed. "I haven't really and it's been a long time. Until recently I wasn't powering up a lot at all. I haven't really seen one, outside of the odd battle I've attended, since I hit eternal. But maybe it's something they can help us figure out, their tech might be able to translate what we can't." Or an alien senshi, perhaps it was a language one of them spoke?

Even if this all only lasted a month or two, just for the summer, he'd like to try and puzzle this out if only to test himself really. But it did seem like a language so it had to exsist somewhere right? Aside from what they were experiencing. "We can try for a conlang and see if that's it and than see about Mauvian help. If not than perhaps see about these alien senshi as well, maybe it's a language they speak." So many options for them to try. This was going to be a task for them both. But it would honestly be fun to solve.

"Then that's settled," Yukio said, pausing as the waitress brought their meals. "Investigate conlangs," he continued when she left, his voice still low, "look for a Mauvian to ask for help, and failing that find one of the alien Senshi to see if they know anything about it."

Picking up a truffle fry, he used it like a conductor's baton, gesturing with it as he spoke. "Reddit's a good place to start the conlang research – at the very least they could point us to conlang resources, maybe even someone locally, though that's almost asking for too much." He was deep into planning and thinking now; this was going to be as much fun as hacking, if not more. "As for Mauvians, I don't know where we could find one on short notice. We could always power up and stand on a corner going 'pspspspsp' I suppose." The single eyebrow arched indicated that he was joking about the 'pspspspsp' bit.

"When do you want to get started? After we're done here?" Yukio finally munched down on the truffle fry, and both eyebrows went up. "That's really good," he remarked, suddenly realizing how hungry he actually was. He grabbed another fry, then took a bite from his burger. "This is amazing. Thank you for suggesting this place – I'll add it to my rotation."

"Yes, I think that's the best we can do for now. With things vanishing on us it'll be the only options we have right now." Not that he liked it, not in the slightest bit, but he'd take what he could get. "We should do a private chat on discord so we can compare notes that way." Since they could protect their internet connection easier than they could their phones. All it would take was misplacing a phone or someone taking it and that would be it.

"That is almost asking for too much, though in this city who knows, but we could try and run things by an expert if we can find someone who would answer us." That was if someone ever responded to them, assuming they'd need to email someone. This was going to be a lot of work, more than most things, but it could be really worth it. It wou,d without a doubt, be a test that he hadn't had in a while and he was sure Yukio was i nthe same boat as him on this.

Laughing at the others idea for getting a Mauvian he shook his head. "We could send out a call and see if any senshi, or knights, who have one living with them could send them our way to talk." That made more sense though the other idea was far more amusing, especially if they were both standing there powered up doing it. Oh god, the mental image was terrible!

Laughing some more he nodded his head. Grabbing for his own fries to nibble one, slowly, he was thinking on things. "We could try when we leave here and hit up reddit and try and find anything on conlangs which we can find. I suggest we do the private chat so we can toss information in there, for when we aren't on at the same time, we can see it later on. A place to store information." Not as safe as he'd like but it would work for now he supposed. We can upload our screen caps as well, a second place to keep the proof of this." He wanted records of this all, just incase. Who knew if any of this would come back and bite them all in the a** months from now. In this city anything was possible.

These two are too much damn fun with something like this. This prompt was perfect for them.

"Mmhmm," Yukio nodded around a mouthful of delicious burger. "Private chat yes – it's the most secure." He felt a little rude for talking with his mouth otherwise occupied with food, so he quickly munched and swallowed before continuing. "You know, despite how weird this all is, it's going to be a fun rabbit hole to go down." And he felt certain Ian felt the same way. They hadn't faced a challenge like this in quite some time.

Raising an eyebrow, he deadpanned, "Now see, that's the sensible way to find a Mauvian. You're right, though, finding someone who already had a cat living with them would be the fastest way." He peered at his friend over his shades, eyebrow still up. "You sure we shouldn't use catnip? A Churru treat? Tuna? No?"

He nodded again. "Yeah, Discord for sure, and definitely a private chat so we don't alarm anyone and can share information." This was going to be exciting and fun. "Can't wait to get started."

"Oh, I know and I agree. This city is certainly providing things more atune to people like us for once." Something where they could show off theirt skills for once, not that anyone was asking or seeking them out. It was like the bank as well, where they could show their skills. They weren't the only two there doing the hacking and such but still. It was unbelievably rare that his skills got put to use and so often he felt like a rather useless senshi, it was one reason he rarely powered up.

"I don't know who we'd offend more..a Mauvian or a good chunk of the city populace due to the smell tuna left out. Catnip....I don't know if that works on them." Though it was an interesting idea, would a laser light also work on them?

"Yeah, we don't need the conspiracy obsessed to panic." Though it might be mildly entertaining to listen to, it would be more annoying than anything, it wasn't something he thought either of them needed to suffer. "I'm excited also. First food and than we work tonight." Taking a drink Ian was pleased with how this meeting had gone. At least he wasn't the only one with issues going on with his phone, he didn't feel like the odd one out here, and he had help. This was good. A bite of his food and he was sure this was all going to go well.
