He had come on an adventure with his best friend’s son Ushiruin. It was a boon for both were safer for going together. Ushiruin was more stable than most of his siblings and was a dependable companion, especially here in deep Jauhar. “Do you reckon we are close? I can’t believe all of the bugs they get here, I think the sea keeps them away in Matori.”

“I think so, they are smaller there too. It shouldn’t be too much farther but it sort of depends on what you consider to be ‘far’.” They had left all civilization behind and he eagerly breathed the clear sweet air that had a flavour all its own in the jungle. “I don’t know about you but my feet are getting sore, I’m used to being able to see further than three feet down the trail too.”

It was true the bush was rather dense here. “I’m not used to it either.” Again he was rather glad that the other boy had come with him. It was almost too lonely out here in this rugged place that neither of them were used to. At least Zena and Matori made sense to him. Not this wild crazy place full of large spicey women and shifters that you would be lucky to see if they didn’t want to be. “I miss Matori.”

“We haven’t even been gone that long, how can you miss it already?” He liked adventure, especially with a mostly reasonable companion like Kellye. His mother had liked him so he must be a decent sort. He had stuck around too even with his Father around so he was also brave and Ushiruin admired that about him. Not that his Dad would have been jealous of the much younger male that had made sure Sae was safe all of those years.

“You underestimate my ability to whine.” He grinned at the other boys’ back. “I’ve been to Oba, I stick out like a sore thumb but you can see someone coming or going for days, its kind of cool if you have the right spy glass.” He smiled remembering the welcome he had got when he went. It might be worth the trouble of passing the desert again to visit his new friend. Bloody long walk though.

He smiled but didn’t say anything further until they got to the lake they had wanted to get to. There was thick foliage all around it so they set up their stuff a little ways away. They ate had a short rest and then they were ready to go.

They selected a broad trunked tree whos branches overhunt the water. It was the easiest place to fish from as after their long treck here neither of them felt like bushwacking. Soon enough they were settled and the lines hit the water. They say enjoying the pure quiet for a while.

“Why did you choose to be a fisherman?” He knew that Kelly was hi Mom’s oldest and closest friend. “why not on eof the battle classes?” The iceling looked fit enough, was it a spiritual reason or was he just obsessed with fishing? Or did he enjoy the way of life.

He sighed. He should have known that a question like this would come from one of Sae’s kids at some point. “When your Mother and I were young we were not well off. We lived with other orphans but all of us refused to go to the orphanage. We were too young to work so we had to steal food. I wanted to have a career that would prevent that from happening again.”

“Ahh, morality. I suppose whatever makes you feel at peace is good. Fishing would be a great career along those lines. So long as you really like to eat fish.” He grinned and tweaked his fishing line in the hopes it would draw a fish over. The weather was holding up well but he also thought it might not hold out the whole time, something..twitchy in the air.

"I do like fish, and though we don't always get a catch usually if you catch over a few days before you can preserve what you can't eat or trade for what you need. Like farming we don't usually go hungry, besides the waters around Matori are very rich. Its a healthy place."
A fish nibbled and he jerked the rod so hard he almost fell out of the tree.

He reached out and caught his friend handily. "Whoah. Must be a good one to make you that jerky." Then he too had a fish on his line and the battle was on to bring them both in without crossing the lines or falling out of the tree into the water with the fish.
There was a great deal of shouting and carrying on followed by laughter.

He managed to bring his respectable sized silver side up first. It was a popular fish for eating in Jauhar so his little guide pamphlet said, they had picked it up in the local village. "This will do for a meal at least, so long as we can find some forage too." He killed it neatly and put it in his back pack which was secured to the tree.

He was too focused on his own fish to pay much attention to what Kellye was doing with his but he did say good job when it was in. Then it was back to his fight. What was this jungle monster that he had caught?
He yoinked hard and across the pond a large long spotted and sailed eel type fish flopped gracefully back into the water giving its head a shake.
"Er, is that one in the pamphlet?"

"Uh no, no it is not. Maybe it is a fish god? Or a spirit or is ancient and was in this pool for forever? It sure is pretty though! I'm sure there is more than one." He got his own line back in the water. He would be darned if this newbie was going to outfish him.
"Bring her in! I want a better look!"
