Radioactive Mysteries (13) : Destiny City has been booming, but with more people you need more power. Recently, an old power plant has been renovated and updated and just opened for business–but now people have been claiming dizziness or fatigue when in the area. Not to mention the animals. So far one shady, blurry video has been posted online of a strange bear-shaped humanoid ‘monster’ in the area. It’s difficult to tell if it’s a hoax or not, but whether or not you believe it, it might be a good idea to keep your eye out if you’re in the area. Especially because if you pass through, you feel like something’s watching you. It doesn’t have an aura so it can’t be a youma, but if you poke around too late at night you might find a strange creature that's built like a bear, covered in fur, but which has a strangely human presence. Something about it is just off--or, maybe it’s just your imagination. Maybe it’s just someone in a costume having a bit of fun at your expense. Still, its claws are sharp and it’s fast. When it runs through the forests, the trees seem to crack upon impact, and if you explore during the daytime you might find strange scratches and odd markings in the grass. The longer you’re in the area, the dizzier you get.
Note: If you choose to encounter the strange creature, your character will recognize that it is not a youma. The creature seems smart enough to understand human words but does not respond and does not seem to listen. It will always disappear before it can be caught or gravely injured. This RP can be used as a battle requirement for a character, separate from your ‘one youma battle’ per stage if there are two powered characters involved; you cannot write a solo and count this as a battle, and your character must be powered and interacting with another player’s powered character for it to count. This can only be used as a battle requirement once per character, but there is no limitation for how many times a player can use this prompt.

"Come onnnnn, you know you want this." On his elbows and knees. Hybris waggled an open churu enticingly at the bushes in front of him. "Nom-nom-nom, oh it's sooooo delicious!" Pretending to nibble at one end, he made eye contact with the fluffy white persian hiding in the shadowy depths of stick and leaf.

A silvery line caught at the corner of his eye and his heartbeat picked up speed. That was definitely a spider web. There were spiders in here. The clouds above slid past, the moonlight revealing that there were likely many spiders in there. Hybris froze, then slid his attention back to the cat, telling it, "I can get you out of these scary woods and I can give you treats, but I can't deal with these. It's your turn to be an apex predator, okay?"

Psilomelane felt a Dark Mirror aura at last, hovering on the edge of their senses. A Super Senshi, like her. If they were close enough to feel, then it wouldn't take her much longer to reach them. And, hopefully, to get help.

She pushed herself for an extra burst of speed. She hadn't been running long, but her legs were already getting tired; an unwelcome side-effect of her over-reliance of teleportation to get her where she wanted to go. She thought about teleporting away from what seemed like a rabid bear on her heels, but that would be both embarrassing and detrimental to solving the mystery.

So she sprinted. And when she finally approached the edge of the words, she yelled out, "Incoming!" Then she burst past the tree line with a gargantuan grizzly on her heels.

Perhaps it was now the white Persian who was most wisely protected by its spider entourage.

A different flavor of Chaos than he'd been treated to arrived, and thankfully it wasn't like, a worse type of youma than the ones that already gave his nights a little too much excitement. Except when he sat up to look over he definitely saw a Worse Youma chasing after a senshi of some flavor.

Scrambling to his feet, he waved her away, "No incoming! Don't come..." She made right for him, possibly expecting help of some kind. Maybe she was the Senshi of Disappointment, since that's what she was in for.

Seeing that she seemed tired and possibly ready to stumble and fall, Hybris decided that maybe it would be okay so long as he ran faster than her and left the Worse Youma to its crimes of opportunity. Taking off, he called back over his shoulder, "I'll go get help!" Maybe he would even get Lenka over later, once it seemed safe, she had a first aid kit, right?

Unfortunately for him, the Worse Youma was either like all the other youma in the city that liked to play chase, he felt, to Hybris in particular. Or it was just really attracted by the open churu still in his hand. Maybe it just felt that it could deal with the new target and circle back to the clearly weakened one. Either way, the creature picked up speed and ran past the corrupt senshi, quickly closing the gap between it and Hybris.

A white, furry head finally peeked out of the bush, giving a small complaint over the snack that had run away.

In the seconds that followed, Psilomelane realized she could not have asked for better timing in encountering another senshi. She was still sprinting when her Bear on Bearoids swapped targets, and immediately thereafter, she tripped on a root and sent herself tumbling into a blackberry bush. It caught her legs mostly, and she knew she was scraped up, but she didn't want to check the extent of the damages with an enormous bear that might smell the blood.

The other one, the Dark Mirror Senshi she hadn't seen before, had said something about going for help. But didn't he have magic like her…? Surely, between the two of them, she could distract the bear and he could use enough force to discourage it. Did he not have offensive magic?

Mystification aside, he was still a person in danger with a bear chasing after him. Once Psilomelane extricated herself from the blackberry bush, which hurt more than falling into it, she tried to give chase. She nearly tripped, once again, on a flash of white that got underfoot. She realized it was a cat, for the creature froze in the face of a towering predator, so she scruffed it before it could recover from its fear.

She wasn't sure what else to do but hoist it into the air Simba-style and proclaim to the bear, "I have a cat!" As if that would somehow change its mind on devouring the Dark Mirror Senshi.

To her amazement, the bear grunted and began to turn around.

When the crashing behind him paused, Hybris took a risk and looked back at his impending death. Which was turning around! Relief flooded him, and he was about to pick up speed when the furry white object and the other senshi's words finally registered.

"Mr. Christmas! No!"

The bear thing turned back to Hybris, and he hurriedly added, "Wait! Not me either!"

In a panic, he swiped a hand over his face and...

Suddenly, in his place, a second bear thing stood, making an unintelligible plea.

The cat was starting to wiggle the way that cats do when they've decided they had enough of the person holding them. Then the cat turned into a liquid that promptly poured through Psilomelane's fingers and pooled on the ground, reformed, and scattered faster than she could react. "Mr. Christmas?" She asked in the direction that she thought the furry creature disappeared.

If Mr. Christmas was indeed his name, he wasn't interested in replying to her now. She couldn't blame him.

There was still the problem of the bear, too. Except, as she looked back at the aggressive mammal, there were now two of them and no Dark Mirror Senshi in sight. She still felt one, so he had to be somewhere, but where? And when did the second bear happen? Was he the second bear?

Only one way to find out. "Bitter hope," she spoke to herself, now looking exhausted and ready to be put down. If they both attacked, then she would know with certainty that there were two bears.

But for all her assumptions, the bear that chased her now looked thoroughly confused. It bear grunted at the spitting image of itself, though the bear it looked at sounded like it had forgotten how to speak. It gave the other creature a questioning grunt, edged closer, then reached out with a paw to swat at the impostor. Just to see if it was real.

Psilomelane was growing increasingly peeved that the bear did not notice her.

Seeing that Mr. Christmas had escaped to safety and the other senshi had succumbed to exhaustion? Internal injury? Hybris took a moment to be relieved. After that moment he realized he was the last one standing and he can't have that!

The bear thing probably didn't think it was using much strength with its test swipe, in fact...it didn't even feel its paw connect but then its doppelganger was dramatically spinning with the force of the hit? It was stumbling and falling to the ground? It was coughing up a mouthful of blood as it gave a pained roar that trailed off into a ingle, wheezing last groan.

The bear thing stared at its paw for a moment. Then Body #1. Turning, it glanced at Body #2 which was on the verge of death. After a few breaths, it abruptly held up its arms with a great roar, a victorious snort, and then sauntered back in the direction of the old power plant.

Good thing too, since didn't take long for Hybris to turn back into a Real Boy again.

Psilomelane didn't know what to make of anything that just happened. Not the bear creature, not the dead bear creature, not the missing-but-not-missing Dark Mirror Senshi, not the cat. She didn't know the first thing about how to process what just happened to her.

Maybe that was for the best. Maybe it challenged her skills in her profession and would help her become better equipped to help her fellow agents through their traumas. Or it would become a reason to start drinking — she didn't have enough of those yet.

By the time her magic wore off, the bear creature was long gone. She straightened up with a long sigh, then took the moment to look over her own injuries. Nothing that came from the bear, but the blackberry bush did a number on her. Senshi outfits didn't afford much protection against brambles, and these brambles were as vicious as the thing that chased her. Probably needed stitches, too.

That left the unsolved mystery of the Dark Mirror Senshi, then she could get herself to an emergency room or an urgent care. She suspected the dead bear had something to do with him, but —

"Are you still there? Are you okay?" She asked, her attention remaining on the carcass.

With a groan, the bear faded into a slightly worn young man, fake blood still glinting brightly down his chin. "I am not okay!" He sat up suddenly in protest at even the idea that he was even slightly okay. Throwing an arm across his tortured visage he proceeded to languish. (He was fine.)

"But I suppose I must survive. For Mr. Christmas!" His dog walker would be so so sad if the neighbor's cat got eaten by a bear-thing.

"I'm Hybris, the Senshi of Eggplants...I know what it's like to be chased down for being delicious," he sighed dramatically. Glancing up at her, he admired the uniform, and the little vanity gremlin at the back of his head was already appreciating it on himself just as much he was enjoying it on her. "So I suppose I won't be mad about this."

Psilomelane panicked when the Mirror Senshi told her he wasn't okay. She pushed past her own pains as she hobble-walked toward him, careful not to exacerbate the injuries where the blackberry bush gored her, but motivated to make it to the senshi's side.

He looked okay, but that said nothing for the emotional scars. Seeing Mr. Christmas in trouble was mostly her fault, for the furry pet was just trying to escape danger. "Is Mr. Christmas your cat?" She asked as gently as she could. She was still panting from the bear encounter and the adrenaline thereafter, but she knew she would be fine in minutes. The Mirror Senshi, though? He looked ready to throw in the towel, even if his words were brave and reassuring.

"Thank you for not holding it against me. My name is Psilomelane, of Mirages, and I should have been more careful. I can either help you up and get you somewhere safe, or try to teleport you to the hospital."

"Mr. Christmas is the cat of a ne," he coughed, realizing he probably shouldn't be giving out his address in this form. "The cat of a nice little old lady. I saw her searching and decided to help her," he sighed, and proceeded to look even more pathetic and wronged. If she was a member of Order, he'd have played up the part of do-gooding a lot more. As it was, Hybris wasn't sure if the Negaverse was into that sort of thing, or if it would be better to play up his do-bading when he ran into them. Psilomelane didn't seem like someone who was out to play tricks and sic youma on people, though. Well...maybe accidentally...

He perked up a little at the Mirages, though, feeling a sudden thematic kinship. Of course the Haunted Garden (his name) was where his dubious loyalties remained. But it was nice to know another member of the Spherehood of Liars, Cheats, and Scoundrels (his name).

That didn't mean he was entirely letting her off the hook, though. "I just need a few moments, to get my bearings. But if you could get Mr. Christmas, I think he likes you more than me." The accompanying sulk here was genuine.

"That's very kind of you, but I believe you have some quota responsibilities to take care of before you start helping old ladies?" She admonished gently. She was dimly aware that the Dark Mirror Court needed energy in much the same way that the Negaverse needed energy, but the particulars of it escaped her. If she knew Before, she didn't now and she hadn't bothered to relearn it.

Straightening up, Psilomelane vented a pained breath. "I will do my best, but I think I violated Mr. Christmas's trust by holding him up like that." If only her sphere allowed her to take on the appearance of that owner… That would have been far more helpful than what transpired with the strange bear.

With a hand braced on her thigh, Psilomelane hunched forward and started a slouching hop back into the woods. It was tedious, walking like that, but she didn't want any of the gouge marks to open further because she had to start walking. "Mr. Christmas?" She called, though she did so quietly; the last thing either of them needed was another run-in with that bear. "Mr. Christmaaaaaas…"

Perhaps Mr. Christmas was feeling a little shy, after all.

Admittedly, he kind of liked being admonished? So he gave a tiny little wiggle, and then nodded solemnly, "You're right. That would have been so much smarter and more mature, to prioritize my responsibilities to the Mirror. Maybe this all wouldn't have happened...but then we wouldn't have met here! So we can just call my mistake a pleasant bit of fate, right?"

For some reason, instead of getting his bearings, Hybris actually felt a little more tired now? More than just using his magic, or the aftermath of the rush of adrenaline should cause. Huh. Sitting up again caused a moment of dizziness.

Not far from where she stood, Psilomelane would find a large lump of white fur. Mr. Christmas seemed to be a bit too still for a moment, but upon checking, she'd find that he was merely sleeping.

"Did you drain me?" Hybris called out, the question lacking any accusation, but rather his total and utter confusion.

Psilomelane sighed, but she had to admit to herself that this fledgling Dark Mirror Senshi — Hybris of Eggplants — was rather charming. Nothing about him suggested any sort of threat, which added to the feeling that she didn't need to be concerned with and aware of him in the same manner that she would with some of his Courtmates.

She didn't respond to his question right away, as she was gathering up the napping lump of white that parked himself in the hollow at the base of a tree. She managed to wrangle the cat into one arm, which pressed him firmly to her chest, while she picked off the stray leaves and twigs with her free hand. She'd never owned a cat before, not to her knowledge, but they seemed to collect dirt and debris faster than a Swiffer mop.

"Alright, we can call this fate," she answered as she strolled back with the cat.

"I didn't drain you, though. If you're feeling tired, it might have been because you used your magic? You and I should both be seen, either way. Come on; I can walk you and Mr. Christmas to the urgent care, but I'm afraid I can't teleport all three of us." She offered her free hand to help him up, for it was a solid fifteen minutes' walk back to the nearest urgent care, and it was better for both of them if Hybris could walk on his own.

Brightening up at the sight of Mr. Christmas, Hybris took the offered hand, ready and willing to hobble off into the sunrise with Psilomelane like a pair of wounded vets escaping the battlefield.

Normally, talking about himself was something Hybris liked to avoid doing too much of. He liked fun and he liked experiences, but he didn't like to be too interesting beyond his face value. One of his favorite things was other people's stories, interesting lives to dip his toes in while never getting his own hands wet. But, since she had been very nice and very helpful , pretty, and was a fellow sphere of dubious nature, he started talking instead of trying to tease out her life bit by bit as they walked.

"This wasn't that bad really. I'll be okay. Last month, Arrow Princess shot me full of magical arrows. And Mister Fire..." he paused, considering her affiliation and the possibility that they might be best friends or something, "...was very brave in trying to fight her. Anyway, I saw a page get stabbed and try to fight a sword with a fan. I think knights might actually be the craziest? The Mirror doesn't have them, I don't know why...maybe they're all trapped in mirrors or something? Like cold storage in case we need some firm, strong hands to protect our Mirror Honor..."

It felt, possibly, like a longer walk than it was, but it was also pretty companionable at least.
