Quote: The Lantern Festival (9) : Scientists have been hard at work trying to understand the strange, glowing qualities of the luminescent caterpillars found in the caves by the reservoir. The caterpillars still shrivel up if they are taken out of the caves but their glowing secretions have been processed into an organic paste that can withstand the outside world. The city is selling paper lanterns infused with various seeds. The glow paste is full of minerals to support healthy plant growth without risking damage to the environment; all lantern purchases come with a small packet of activating power that will heat the paste up enough to mimic the effects of a candle without the concerns of flammability. When the glow paste loses its heat, the lantern will return to the Earth and upon the first rain (or any contact with water) the paper will dissolve and the seeds may begin to grow. All proceeds from the lanterns are put right back into the community to support local conservation and environmental protection efforts. Pendour looked almost normal. She was still a little dark-circled around the eyes, maybe, but at least she wasn't looking like she was being pulled thin as a string, today, like she'd been just a few weeks ago. She walked softly on the way to the reservoir, of course powered up so that she could slip between the surface if she wanted to. The water called to her, especially since it was still hot, even at the edge of evening. Of course she wanted to. She would wait, though. When she'd invited Abzu out here, she'd bought some of the lanterns from the star festival. She should probably use them. "Planting wildflowers for the pollinators is one of the best things that individuals can do for the environment," said Pendour, shaking her lantern so that she could hear the familiar rattle of seeds inside. "I want to see where these land, so I can look for the sprouts, after." A moment passed, and she glanced up. "And I almost want to plant one of these on Neptune, see if I can make the butterflies up there happy, or see what other little bugs might show up alive again."

Almost normal. Would he like to see those bags leave her face entirely? Sure. Would he take her feeling good enough to invite him places that weren't just the Bell Abode? Absolutely. Pendour was always stretching herself thin for everyone else, and it was nice to just take a walk along the reservoir and see her playing with the lantern, its seeds rattling. "For sure," Abzu wouldn't disagree with that. "Giving pollinators something to feed on so they work to spread the seeds is a cyclical thing, really, and providing seeds just helps with that." And it would certainly help on Earth, especially if more people did it. Only so much could be done about corporations, but-- He ignored those thoughts in favour of considering her wonder. "Oh, right, you have butterflies! I bet they'd love some fresh flower growth." Abzu glanced at one of his own lanterns thoughtfully, swinging it to hear the way the seeds moved. Perhaps he was naturally rhythmic, but something of it was soothing. "Don't think these would do terribly well at my wonder. The environment of the deep sea is something entirely other, I admit." It was alien in its own way without even being on an alien planet. Adding in the Neptune thing made it fascinating.

"Although I have flowers up there, already," Pendour mused, still a little caught up in her own thoughts. If she brought more up, it would really be more for herself than for any insects that had managed to make a home of the cove. Of course she would take seeds up anyway. There were still empty garden patches up there, and that wouldn't do for Pendour's plant loving heart. Although, there were maybe more efficient ways to plant than just by lettling lanterns float where they would. Abzu mentioning his own part of Neptune had her turning nearly a half circle to face him, so that she could see his face with her good eye. "The depths must have their own beauty, though," she told him, her smile soft in the way that it was when she thought about these things. A moment passed, and then she added, "You know, you've still never shown me Abzu."

"Can never hurt to have more flowers I think." Well, it could if he wanted to be pedantic. Roots could get bound, some of the plants might take too many resources from others, plants often needed different conditions and there may not be enough space-- all he knew was what he heard the property gardeners talk about in that perspective. It was a lot to think about and he'd let them handle the complications; he was too prone to migraines for that. All he really knew was that it looked beautiful in the end. It was part of why his garden was so well tended to. The other major part was the gardener he paid well of course-- She wasn't wrong. He hadn't showed her Abzu yet. "They do! I'm sure!" He laughed. "Can still barely see anything down there though. That deep in the sea is so dark." He needed to see if Realta would still be up for some deep sea bubble wiring, honestly... "It's like walking through a deep blue shadow with pops of light from luminescent creatures and bright heat from distant vents. That seems to be what is providing the comfortable warmth, at least. The past Abzus hooked it up to geothermal heat." He glanced toward her, and with a wink, couldn't quite help the terrible joke of, "I mean, great cover for doing terrible things though." ... Not that he was. On Abzu at least--

He was right. There was no such thing as too many flowers. If you started running into the problems of rootbind, of overcrowding, that did not mean you had too many plants. It simply meant you did not have enough space. "Well, if it's dark," said Pendour, and as she read a small line of instructions, she cracked the lantern in her hands like a glowstick, and watched as it slowly began to warm in her hands, and then glow, little by little, "Then it would be a good place to bring a light." Although the lightheartedness left her voice in an instant, and all of her attention was back towards Abzu and away from her light, even as it began to lift slowly into the sky like this was the scene from Tangled. His wonder was a place for hing terrible things? Any wink, any tone to his voice, completely flew over her head. "Oh," she murmured, brows pressing together. "What happened? What did you find down there?" Her voice was soft, sympathetic.

Abzu glanced to his own lantern, and decided this was as good of a time as any to get his lit up. As he started to mimic what she had done, he too got distracted, but it wasn't by the terrible things so much as-- It didn't take him too long to realize why her voice had changed tone, and his expression had gone from a jocular charm to surprise to mild amusement--nothing malicious or at her directly, but a funny miscommunication was funny nevertheless. "Ah, nothing bad. Found some art pieces that I question what the artist was thinking though." He chuckled. "Was making a joke. The darkness provides the perfect cover for some scenes playing with sensory stuff. Kinky stuff." He snickered lightly. "Didn't mean to worry you." Abzu left his lantern alone for the moment to glance away from Pendour directly to look up at her lantern as it floated upward. "But it would be better if that had it's own dedicated space. The entire place right now has that lighting."

"Oh," said Pendour, without judgement or even much surprise, the lines smoothing from her face as quickly as they had come up. It wasn't the first time that he'd said something about that kind of thing that had gone over her head. Since there wasn't anything to worry about, she turned back to watch the way that her lantern bobbed over the water. It really was like something out of a fairytale, she thought, and she leaned over to rest her head against the top of Abzu's, reaching to play with his hair with her other hand. "There's got to be lights in there somewhere, um, if they built a place for humans that far down in the depths," she mused. "A mauvian could help you with the wiring, maybe. Soleiyu is the one who helped me get the water going, on Pendour. Or, um, you could go the route that I did and just get some battery operated things." Her lava lamps had an interesting enough effect in the shadier parts of her own wonder. She thought, briefly, about what kind of shadows they might cast in a place that was truly dark. "And you could always turn the lights off if you wanted to, um," she paused to choose a word, but didn't seem embarrassed, "Play."

It was nice how quickly she was able to calm and focus again on the lantern. Abzu wanted to see her calm, really. She did so much for everyone else that she deserved that moment of peace all the more. When she set her head atop his and played with his hair, he closed his eyes for a moment, let out a happy sigh, and opened his eyes again. Idly, he resumed readying the lantern he had brought with him. In theory there had to be light somewhere. This had been a functional facility used for art at the very least, considering the trappings of paintings that he found a couple times. Didn't make sense they would do all of that with no lighting, it was the key of finding where it was. Did the geothermal heat power anything other than the fact that it was a livable space that wasn't freezing? Throughout his life, someone else had always done the renovations. Someone else who had usually been paid a pretty hefty amount all things considered (although his not actual parents were surprisingly cheap for the amount of money they had). It was different to think about himself doing the renovations, by the same token the idea of having lighting he could adjust was giving him ideas... "I had another Mauvian offer to help me get something wired up there. Realta?" He didn't know if she knew her, but, "She was the one that got my ring updated to act like a phone. If I could actually recruit her to do it, I wonder if I could get her to create some adjustable lights." There would be more opportunities than just sensory decoration with that... Just a nice dim comforting lighting, bright light for particular projects, maybe a darker lighting if they wanted to watch something on like a movie projector... And of course, for the types that preferred the seductive romance type approach-- "Being able to turn the lights on and off would definitely give a lot of opportunities for play," her choice of word was correct and he kept it, even adding a bit of a purr to the way he said the word. His tone quickly recovered when he continued with, "Lots of types really, not just a sexy kind," a beat, "though my brain is often on the sexy kind." He wasn't afraid to admit that. "But imagine a nice backlight for a movie night surrounded by the mysteries of the deep sea."

"I don't know that I'd be any good at making lighting, um, sexy," she told him. She would try if he wanted her too, the same way that she would try to help her nephew kick around a soccer ball if he asked. She wasn't very good at that, either. Like sports, this was something that was out side of her area of experience, and honestly something that she wouldn't have cared much about at all on her own, although if it was important to Abzu, she would listen to him speak of it, and do what she could. "But I can take you shopping, sometime. I can show you some of the things that I've used in the inner rooms on Pendour, that should help some while you and Realta," she didn't recognize the name, but that was okay, "Work on something bigger, something for the rest of it." Anything LED, with long lasting batteries, would be fine, but some of the options were nicer than the others. "And we can set up something all soft and lovely for our movie night," she said, and, watching the lights added, "We could watch Tangled." She knew that one well enough that if she fell asleep, as she had a tendency to do around Abzu, it would be okay.

"You don't need to help me make it look sexy. I got a pretty good eye for that." It was, admittedly, partially because his mind was perpetually in the gutter. While he was good at keeping it under wraps and leaving people out of it who weren't interested or hadn't displayed interest, it didn't mean he wasn't fairly attuned to it. The excess of money he possessed gave him plenty to use to play with it, too, in designs included. "I'd love to go shopping, though," he grinned, "especially since you already have an idea of what works out in space. Never been a renovator myself. Could use the assist." It wasn't quite as easy as watching his own glowing lantern float upwards. "Don't think I've ever seen Tangled," Abzu mused, adding with a snicker, "Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention." But that was alright either way. For him, movies often ended up being background noise, lost in the backdrop of conversation, or of naps, or of ... other things, but that wasn't terribly relevant here. "I'd love something soft. Get the sense that'd fit right in, at least in some areas." In others, he was fairly sure he saw where a sculptor had been working, or a little desk filled with knickknacks he didn't quite recognize -- not really places for a comfy movie night. An intimate little stage, though? Abzu bet they could do something with that.

Pendour simply nodded, quick to leave him to that side of things. She could show him the tools she’d found, and he could use them how he wanted. With seeing his house, she didn’t think he’d have such a hard time decorating in general, but she’d help where she could. “Tangled could be our first movie, then,” she said, shifting a little against him. Locks of his hair were curled all the way around her palm now. “You’d like it. It’s sweet.” The art was beautiful and it was calming, heartwarming. Pendour spent a lot of time watching movies like that, and yet it had stood out. “Do you want to swim?” She asked, all at once, breaking away and walking towards the water’s edge. She did, but it would be nicer with him by her side.

Abzu was happy to let her play with his hair as long as she wanted. "I could use a sweet movie, I think," and even if he stopped paying attention after fifteen minutes to take a nap, it probably wasn't a terribly hard movie to figure out in the aftermath. Tangled was a Rapunzel story, right? Or something like that? His thoughts cut as she was suddenly no longer quite as entangled with him. His eyes lit up. While this suitcoat wasn't exactly built for swimming in, the guise that he wore could easily be refreshed afterward, whether to just stay off in favour of being himself again or just as a quick hit of the his-outfit-needed-a-wash. "I'd love to!" The reservoir was so refreshing, and while it wasn't his hot tub or a swimming pool, it was refreshing in a different way. Something was nice about swimming under the stars, or the dancing lights of the lanterns. "After you?"

“Did I tell you I can breathe underwater?” she asked him. “Some magic from my Wonder.” Her eyes fluttered shut, and in that moment a pair of ethereal gills appeared at the sides of her neck, although they weren’t so noticeable in the darkness. “So don’t worry if I stay down for a while. It’s nice at the bottom. Um, peaceful.” There was something about being submerged for a long time that she couldn’t find anywhere else in the world, but she wouldn’t stray too far from Abzu today. She kicked off her shoes on the beach but left the rest of her outfit. It all turned weightless when she hit the water anyway. She waded in, slowly for the first few steps, but then faster, until she was up to about her chest. Then she turned back, the smile she was wearing probably the happiest she’d had in months. She always had the mermaid outfit, but now she really looked the part, with her hair floating behind her, and her transcendence markings refracting through the water like the light of the lanterns. “It’s not cold,” she told him.

"Don't think you have, actually," but that was fascinating knowledge to learn. Their wonders could grant the ability to do things like breath underwater. He wondered if he would get anything similar as he went to his wonder more often. There was a lot that could be done with the ability to breathe underwater through gills-- Abzu pulled his thoughts away from the fantasy world to watch Pendour leave her shoes behind and leave the land behind altogether. She looked ... happy. Truly happy, and the smile on his face only solidified and widened to something of a playful simper. Seeing her that happy was good. Nice. It was what he wanted to see, ultimately. Taking any part of his outfit off was a pain in the a**, and his conductor's suit was not quite giving the same mermaid vibes that she was, but he discarded his shoes and then his suitcoat to make it a bit less weighty and unpleasant to join her. "I think it's too warm out for that water to be anything but refreshing." In a lot of ways, really. When he caught the light from the lanterns dancing in the water, he let out a contented little sigh. And then he followed after her, accepting that he could discard this whole guise fairly easily to get a dry outfit once he hit the surface again. "The water really suits you, you know," Abzu ended up having to stop going further into the water a bit earlier than Pendour, mostly because his shorter statute required that unless he felt like doing more than wading. "The mermaid looks and the smile it brings your face is lovely. You look like you belong here."

Pendour really did seem in her element her, stimming gently with the water’s surface as she ran her fingers across the small ripples their motions were causing. She went under, just for a moment, and came up close to Abzu, her hair slicked back, now. She tilted her head. “Really?” She asked. “I’m only Neptune because of my ancestry. It’s not something in my starseed,” she said. “Which is okay. You know I love it there, you know I’ve put a lot of myself into making it mine at this point, but sometimes it feels a little-“ She looked down at herself, at the glowing lines on her arms that curved like scales, at the way the train of her dress split like a fish tail, and the way it was slick and weightless in the water, like it had been designed for this. “I’m not a musician,” she said, finally. “Not like you. I do like art, and I always was, um, drawn to the water, but it wasn’t some big part of me.” Her smile was distant, but in a thoughtful way. “It took some getting used to everyone seeing me as a mermaid when I’m a gardener.”
