The Calling (12) : A beautiful melody drifts on the air from somewhere far away. The vocals are in a language you don’t quite recognize, but feel somehow familiar to you. Something about the song calls to you, but no matter where you go, the song seems to sound the same distance away. The longer it goes on, the more emotional the song becomes--and the more emotional you become. Something about the song is possessive and consuming, like it’s all you can think of. Something resonates in you as the song crescendos, and the feeling is at its strongest--be they good, bad, anything, but suddenly the song fades, and there’s only an emptiness inside of you. The feeling of loss is strong, and can leave someone feeling emotionally numb. Someone out there was calling to you, and you couldn’t find them.
Things had gone very very bad the past few times she had powered up so today she just went for a walk to try and clear her head some. She had some pain still from the burns she received during her last encounter as the fabric of her clothing rubbed against her stomach where the worst of it was. Her thoughts were interrupted as she heard the softest sound creeping into her ears. Turning towards the direction it seemed to be coming from, she heard a voice beginning to sing. It sounded old, like it was being sung in a language that hadn’t been used in a long while. It called to her, willing her to follow, and she listened.
Walking towards it, she felt the pain from trying to walk too fast while everything was still fresh. She needed to get closer, something told her the person singing needed her to get there. Each time she got closer, the song seemed to move away the same distance as if she wasn’t gaining on it in the slightest. It started to hurt not just physically but in her heart too, she longed for something more than what she was doing. With her burns she would be looked at with disdain if people saw them, as if she was marked as less desirable. Her beauty was her strength when it came to social events and gathering info and now it was marred.
She was jealous of her brother, how he had found someone who could look past the scars and love them. How would she find someone like that if she didn’t even know how to love. She just used people for info and to get ahead but now, that would be harder to do. She couldn’t sleep around for information the same way or wear things to show off her body, at least for now and that was where it hurt the most. What if it wasn’t just for now, what if this was permanent and she would have scars.
She wasn’t even aware of the song anymore as she walked forward one step at a time. Alexandre would help her right? He knew a doctor, maybe they could help. She was scared and upset as she stared to tear up. The sound reaching up to a breaking point as she fully started to sob.
How could anyone love her if she wasn’t beautiful anymore?
It felt like a knife in her chest as she thought about the real possibility of it.
The voice sung a response, though she didn’t understand it, and then it went silent. Leaving her emotionally spent and feeling empty inside. Reaching out for the nearest bench, she sat to try and calm her nerves. This was all too much for her and now the feelings and song were gone, leaving her alone in the summer evening. She felt very small and very lonely as she sat there, wishing that her brother was here or that Alexandre would offer her some advice as her senior.
