The worker at that store was right, and sharing her candy was going to be the best option. She had sampled many of them, and the one that came…out of the unicorn was her favorite for obvious reasons so that one stayed in her room, but the others, the others she carried in one of the bags that Todd had given her, and Genevieve looked around the park, hoping to find someone who was…or. Who might be as lonely and uncertain as she was.
Honestly she doubted she’d find anyone as bad off as she was…with everything that had happened and what she had learned but, there was a boy who looked about her age sitting on one of the swings. She loved the swings…they were one of the best things about the Earth, at least in her mind. It was so fun to just…fly through the air and it was safe too, which was nice.
Walking over she held her bag open to the boy. “Hello! You look like you’re thinking about things, can I offer you some candy? I was told that sharing it might bring me more joy than just eating it all myself, and I’m hoping that he was right!”
She smiled brightly, hoping that that would help too.

He didn’t know why he decided to sit on the swing, except that there was no one else around for once. He was definitely too old to be playing on a playground meant for little kids. And if anyone saw him? That would be annoying to try and explain himself.
But for a few minutes it seemed as though he was alone.
Until some girl came walking over and brandishing a bag of candy and talking. So much.
Riker was immediately off the swing, and he scoffed at the girl. She looked about his age, but that didn’t matter.
“You just give away candy? Why, is it poisoned? Who talks like that, anyway? It brings me joy, yeah okay, why not give them to some kids then?” he sneered and took several steps away from the swingset, shoving his hands in his pocket.
He was just going to ignore the way his ears burned and hope his hair covered it.

Genevieve’s eyebrows pulled together as she tried to take in and process just why this person was being so hostile...it didn’t seem necessary and it didn’t.
“You seem as though you truly need the candy to get your bad mood away, I can understand that, it isn’t poisoned, I promise! It’s quite good and sweet and makes people feel better. I don’t know any kids, and you are the only other one out here right now, so I would like to give some to you.”
Her steps were hesitant at first as she followed him, but grew a little more determined. “It will help. Candy and sweets always help. No matter what is wrong…ah…”
Well. They helped to distract at any rate…and sometimes that was all that you could do. Distract. And hope for the best.
“If they will not solve the issue. They will give a slight reprieve.”

“Bad mood?” Riker immediately stopped and whipped around to glare down at her.
“You think I’m in a bad mood and that it can be fixed by candy? News flash, candy doesn’t make everyone feel better,” he scowled, flexing his hands by his sides because he didn’t know what he was supposed to be doing with them.
She was just so aggressively trying to force candy on him, and he had no idea what kind of candy it was. For all she knew, the candy could kill him.
“By the way, my bad mood only started when you tried shoving your stupid candy at me,” he growled. His ears were still burning, and he was certain his cheeks were now, too. Who did she think she was?? She had no idea what was going on in his life, and he wasn’t about to share.

Genevieve simply stared at the human boy, half hurt, and half concerned as to why he was turning red. Was this anger? Embarrassment? Was this just a human quirk that she didn’t know about yet?
Regardless of what it was, she took a step backwards, her gaze falling to the ground at his feet. “I apologize for my presumption…I simply wanted to try to bring some joy into the world. I don’t really have much in my life and I was given the advice that sharing my sweets would help others. I did not mean to offend you.”
She felt awkward now and swallowed, half wanting to give a bow and walk away, but she didn’t think that bowing would be the right thing to do with this boy…and honestly, he didn’t really deserve that courtesy anyway so…
“If you do not wish to share with me, that is fine…but…I do hope that your troubles are soon amended.” That was diplomatic.
Mother would have been proud.

Riker continued to frown at her. She was strange. And that was coming from someone who was called strange all the time. Maybe she was just trying to be friendly, but she didn’t need to force herself on people.
“Whoever gave you the advice that sharing sweets would help others clearly hasn’t bothered trying to actually help others,” he scoffed, crossing his arms defensively over his chest. He knew it was probably not fair to be mean to her, but she was so aggressive about the candy, and now she is suddenly so mopey. Maybe it was real, or maybe it was just a way to try and make him feel bad for her.
It probably worked on most people. A girl trying to give out sweets, claiming so easily that she didn’t have much joy in her life. How could she admit that so easily, if it wasn’t just a way to get others to feel bad? He certainly wasn’t going to start whining about his life, or the people he knew.
He was certain Maisie would comment something like ‘why are you like this’, but at the moment he didn’t care. She probably didn’t care either. No one did, unless it was for their own benefit.
Just like how he couldn’t even eat her candy, even if he wanted to. Unless he wanted to end up in the hospital, probably.
“If you want to help people, there’s the Star Festival starting soon. Just fulfill wishes from the tree,” he shrugged, like that was obvious.

Genevieve hesitated. “Wishes? There is a tree that can grant wishes?” She shut her mouth with a pop, realizing that she must seem strange with asking such clarifying questions but…
That simply seemed too good to be true. “If that is the case, I will do that, but…I am still going to wait around here to see if candy will brighten anyone’s day…” She hesitated and then turned back towards him, extending a hand. “I hope that your problems get taken care of and that something brings you some joy. I am Genevieve, and though you were a little mean, it was nice to meet you.”
She didn’t have…well. Any friends so…alienating someone who looked to be about her age just…seemed wrong.

“Did you even listen to what I said?” Riker barked when she had such a ridiculous reaction and started talking about a tree granting wishes. Now he knew she was just making fun of him.
For a moment he didn’t even want to try and correct her, because she was obviously making fun of him. Who actually thought a tree could grant wishes?
“I said you fulfill the wishes from the tree. Have you never been to the Wishing Tree before?” he scoffed, because she was clearly not from Destiny City then.
As for a tree granting wishes, he muttered under his breath about how ridiculous that was.
“People put what they want on the tree then others take those ‘wishes’,” he explained, uncrossing his arms to do some air quotes, “And you grant those wishes. You said you want to help and bring people joy, didn’t you? That’s how you can do it.” Duh.
Her holding a hand out to him and calling him mean and still expecting him to, what…? Just be her friend?
He didn’t take her hand. He didn’t give her his name.
“Whatever,” he shrugged and turned away from her to leave the playground. Maybe he would check in at the hospital. At least the people he knew that were likely there wouldn’t shove candy at him and expect him to be happy about it.

Did…she listen? Of course she had listened, and he said that there was a tree that granted wishes but…
Genevieve watched as he walked away, her hand falling slowly to her side. That…hadn’t gone well but…maybe others would come to the park and maybe it would be better…
And hopefully that guys day would be better too…and if it didn’t…
Well.
…Oh well.
