A small pine tree sat on the corner of his desk, among all the other plants in his office, with little blue and gold balls hanging from its small branches. He was hoping in time it would grow, so far it had been doing well in his office, it was big enough he even had a little star on top of it. At two foot tall, or thereabouts, the General was pleased with it thus far. He’d hoped with pine trees being so sturdy, being able to handle any weather, that it would survive this environment as well.

So far he was right - it was doing well.

He had music playing, he had music playing often, in his office. The nutcracker suite was one of his favorites and it had him leaning back in his seat, eyes looking around at all the green, as he hummed gently to the music. So far his little project was going well. He didn’t know what he’d do in the end but he was content in not knowing…in not having a plan for them all. He was sure he’d think of something in time, or someone else he knew would come up with an idea.

“Keep growing strong.” He whispered into his office, enjoying the candle light dancing around lighting up the room. He didn’t like the harsh brightness of light bulbs and he had the lights for the plants turned off, to simulate night, and was going with candle light for right now. The scent of the candles, roses and rain, filled the air as he leaned forward as he opened his eyes. He had a book on his desk, something he’d been planning to read earlier, and reached for it.

Fulgurite still wasn’t quite used to some of the freedoms being eternal provided.

When he wandered through the halls and the offices of the agents and senshi, people generally left him alone, besides for the occasional person who needed to know the way to go. It helped that he had gotten good at wearing the face of someone who looked busy--he wasn’t, not really, but if someone thought he was on Important Eternal Work? Maybe they’d let him be.

On occasion, he considered filing for his own office in this place. Not because he necessarily needed one, but it would provide him a place to hide away. It might have been worth the hassle.

He was derailed from his own thoughts by the gentle ballet music and the increasing scent of pine. It was enough to capture his curiosity. Was someone growing a pine tree in this miserable place? How? Pine could tolerate lower light conditions considering it thrived during the winter season, but he was fairly sure this didn’t apply. Fulgurite had trouble enough with Albite’s garden.

Fulgurite decided to venture closer to the office, because if anything, maybe what he saw would make his life easier.

And what he saw was more plants and a face that brought back memories he hadn’t quite wanted. The events that had led to the two of them crossing paths in the first place, for one.

Flipping the book open, rather slowly and gently, the ashen blond leaned back and that was when he spotted someone. The face was familiar, he hadn’t seen them in a good while, but he did remember the face. Maybe he should have closed his door fully so no one could peek into his office, as he was certain his choice of decorations was to most peculiar to say the least. He was fairly certain no one else had plants in their office - just him. Not that it bothered him, he couldn’t care less what others did inside their offices, but he also didn’t care for the rumor mill he was certain existed amongst his fellow officers.

With a short sigh his book was closed and gently set on his desk, he’d try again later perhaps. “Can I help you?” The question came out as he turned his eyes onto the door, and its occupant. The light of his candles danced across his fair features, adding a glow to his hair, as he tilted his head to the side in question.

Fulgurite had not been expecting to be addressed directly, necessarily, but perhaps he should have known better. For one?

For one, he was ******** staring.

He cleared his throat, averting his eyes from the general he was facing for a moment. That general. He had been the one to take over Fulgurite’s care first–or second, if the length of time Bischofite had kept him under his titulege really counted at all–which meant that with the appearance of this general came the reappearance of those days to his mind. Thinking of that confrontation in the alleyway and what it had eventually led to had brought goosebumps to his skin.

Nectaris had coached him out of a lot of the things he learned during the early days, and it left him looking at Benitoite with the same face as a different person. “General,” he cleared his throat. “Well, suppose we’re equals now.” How that had happened was beyond him. When he was “recruited,” that wasn’t a possibility. “Benitoite. I just noticed the plantlife you had in your office and was a bit curious.”

Yeah, that was easy enough.

“Ahh, yes I’ve brought my hobby for plants down to my office.” He spoke gesturing about himself. “If you open my door further and step inside you’ll find my office resembles a greenhouse more than an office.” Something he didn’t see a problem with, especially not when he was testing these plants to see which ones would survive down here, and how to ensure others would in the future survive down here.

“Tell me, how have you been?” He questioned with a tilt of his head and a ghost of a smile in place, it had been a very long time since he’d seen this one. “I see you’ve come a long way, very good, but that doesn’t tell me how you are.” And he did hope they’d been doing well. He had lost track of them after Bischofite had messed that mission up. He’d been busy pulling himself together after all that. It wouldn’t surprise him to know more people, other than himself, had needed time to work through what had happened that night.

Hobby for plants … Did having a thing for plants end up common among those of the Negaverse? He supposed this space was … dreary, at best. The constant lack of sunlight was something that Fulgurite was not necessarily comforted in. Plants, he noted, as he walked into the office further, were something that at least made the air feel a little less thick, even if it didn’t necessarily brighten anything up.

“It does look like a greenhouse down here.” Fulgurite had to admire that, at least. Benitoite seemed to know what he was doing. “Bet Prehnite would have some thoughts on this too – have you talked with him?”

… Why was he trying to build connections here? That was the last damn thing he wanted to do.

Maybe it was meant as a distraction from talking about himself, but Fulgurite knew he couldn’t dodge the question forever. “I’m alright,” he fidgeted, toying with the edges of his bangs. “A lot’s happened since I was on your team and since,” well. Anyway, “moved teams a few times. Ended up with Sylvite and then with Albite,” because saying he wasn’t Sylvite’s still felt odd. “Took me a while to get through my super years to get to eternal, but here now.”

He glanced over his shoulder to his Crobat wings.

Unfortunately.

“No, I’ll admit I’m not familiar with who they are even.” He didn’t know a lot of the newer recruits, partially because he stuck to his small group, but really he wasn’t the most social of Generals either. He was content with his little group and not venturing too far out of his group. He was open to others approaching him though, he always was, but he didn’t go seeking out new people himself.

“Why? Do they dislike plants?” He questioned with a raised brow, curious.

“Mmm, bouncing around isn’t really the best thing but I understand it happens. Sometimes members….vanish and shirk their duties.” Most of the time they did it because civilian life became more important, and they gave up the fight here, but that wasn’t always the case. Some actually became traitors and changed sides; he'd seen a few such officers in his time. Some of those traitors left a bitter taste in his mouth and got his blood warming and boiling even.

“Congratulations on making eternal, it takes a lot of work to make eternal or general. It’s n o easy feat.” It was something he’d pushed through as fast as he could, rushing headlong into fights and battles where he should have, perhaps, practiced caution. It was something he still had issues with, as he still would dive into a battle head first and worry later.

“I’ve decided to experiment a bit and see if they can’t grow down here. I’ve found that adding ground up dark crystals helps them survive, those that didn’t have it died rather quickly.”

"Opposite, actually," Fulgurite's lips ticked up in mild amusement. In some ways, it was comforting. Not even every General knew everything about every other general, so the concept that they would know a lot about him seem to fall flat. It was hard to convince himself otherwise due to how he was recruited, but perhaps things would be okay? "He loves plants. Think it might be one of the few things he cares about other than his own team."

Perhaps.

His civilian life had always been in a lot of ways more important than his powered life in the Negaverse. By the same token, his civilian life was part of what got him into this mess! He had been recruited in the first place because of his sister's relationship with a half-youma… He glanced away from his wings and back toward Benitoite. "Thank you," because he was supposed to be thankful.

It was no easy feat. That much was true! And he did have his own freedom now, very few people can teleport them elsewhere. But something still felt…

The crystals?

"I think that makes sense, right? The crystals are what essentially grows in the dirt here. Maybe they're in some way nourishing?" Crystals were everywhere here. "Could be providing the nutrients they need to deal with the fact that it's very dark down here."

His instinct went to the floral. It was easier to focus on that than anything else.

“Oh, then perhaps I should keep them from my office so as to not lose any plants to them. That would be rather upsetting as I rather like them all.” And he was working on a project which involved them all. Though it was something he’d keep in mind, another who liked plants as much as he did. They might be someone to question if he had any issues, though he doubted he would, it might turn out to be helpful at some point.

“Then that makes two of us as I care for little other than my family, my team and my plants.” Shrugging as he spoke honestly, it was simply how he was. He didn’t care much for others though he was fighting this war for the sake of every civilian…whether they knew it or not. Although as time had gone on he could say he stuck around because he enjoyed it, he enjoyed the fighting and the blood and the killing. It was a thrill for him and something very different from the normally posh life he lived, he supposed it was like two puzzle pieces which didn’t fit together. Somehow both sides of his life worked though, he managed to keep things from slipping together too much.

“Yes, that was my thoughts on the matter as well. I’ve of course added the usual things you would to plants anyway. The lights here to help them as well as water, of course, but the soil is high quality and I’ve added bonemeal to each one when they were potted. I bought them young and small so they could grow accustomed to things down here.” He was trying to make this work, as much as he could anyway, and so far he was finding a way for it to do so. He kept tabs on it all and tended to them as he would do normally, to the ones he kept as a civilian. It was just an extension of the greenhouse he had at home.

Cared about little outside of his team, his plants, and his family … to be honest, a part of it felt familiar. Fulgurite could sympathize with caring about little outside of those close to him, like his family and his boyfriend (and potentially his girlfriend? He wasn’t sure where he stood with Nectaris). By the same token, perhaps he cared too much, and perhaps that was where the problem lied. He hated everything the Negaverse asked him to do. He hated everything the Negaverse saw as normal.

Like the blood, and the fighting, and the killing. Perhaps there had been a point that it was a way to deal with aggression.

Not anymore, not really.

“I can sympathize,” he said, despite all of that. “Family is one of my biggest focuses.” Foci? It was definitely foci–

Plants. He could deal with plants. “Bonemeal is a pretty good additive for soils if you want to encourage the growth of certain plants.” He hummed to himself, thoughtfully. “The crystals might be adding some nutrients that good bonemeal and manure are lacking. Depending on the plant you’re growing, might be worth switching out the soil for something a bit sandier or grittier. Root vegetables prefer that for example.”

He was a florist by trade. This? This he could talk about.

“Family should always be a big thing, though it shouldn’t become the cause for an officer to vanish and fail in their duties.” As some had done in the past. Some officers were still missing in action, and had been, in favor of their civilian lives and families. It was a sacrifice but it was one they all made; a balancing act.

“Mmm, and some plants don’t like soil at all because they are climbers. Rather than a solid pot, with holes in the bottom for drainage, they prefer holes in the pot all over - like orchids. I’m trying to go with ones which last year round, so I can continue to see how the growth goes with them, I’d rather ones well known for being hearty as well.” Nothing too easy to kill, not yet anyway, but this was a whole plan which he’d undertaken. It was going to be long term, take up his office, and take a lot out of him.

“I’m hoping that’s what the crystals will do but more importantly I’m hoping they ensure the plants survive down here, as it’s not ideal really. I’d use manure but I don’t care to be locked in a room with that smell.” And he was certain no other officer would want to smell it whilst coming down the hallway. It would, without a doubt, land him in some trouble with other officers. He wasn’t interested in others really knowing what he was doing, they were likely to have things to say about it, so he’d like to keep them from his office.

“I’ll keep that in mind with root veggies though. I’ve got some veggies growing at home in my own greenhouse.” He had herbs and veggies but then he had other things…some for other uses and some for looks. He liked to try new plants and test himself really.

Family shouldn’t be the cause for an officer to abandon their duties and vanish, mm? It impacted some of how he thought already–he couldn’t leave, he couldn’t abandon his family, not the family that the Negaverse already knew about considering Orah had some kind of situationship with the person who recruited him–but it reinforced something that made the bitterness well up in his chest. He couldn’t leave and abandon his family.

The Negaverse also expected him to effectively abandon his family in service of their eldritch goddess and whatever starseed craving plan she had today.

There wasn’t an angle he could win this, was there?

“Might be worth it to look into hydroponic plants, too,” Easy to talk plants. “They don’t tend to need as much soil as their roots are often just hanging and you can spritz those. Some soil is still needed to help keep the plant sturdy and maybe to give them small improvements from any fertilizer, like the crystals…”

Well, at least some of his advice. Did this count as giving a general advice? Did he do his job?

“Honestly,” and he could tell just by looking at them, “I think the crystals are helping.” What were the crystals actually powered by?

Maybe that was a thought he didn’t want to have.

Tilting his head as the other offered a suggestion he nodded slowly. “I hadn’t considered it, I don’t typically grow such plants myself, but it is an idea. I wonder if you could, instead of adding the crystals to the soil, rather grind them up enough to mix it right into the water.” The water might be off color, for obvious reasons, but it wasn’t a bad idea really. Oh, he liked the idea a lot though as it would give another sort of plant for him to tinker with and test on. What he was looking for, as results, he was unsure other than wanting them to survive and thrive down here.

“That’s good if you also see the crystals as helping, I didn’t want it to just be me seeing what I want to.” That could always happen in something like this, even if he had everything written down, he could still think his results were good just because some plants were surviving. It wasn’t as if every plant had survived to this point after all.

“I’m honestly hoping the crystals will allow the plants to grow down here, considering the environment down here being what it is, rather than giving it nutrients which is why I’m keeping with good dark soil and bonemeal to give actual nutrients. I’ve been adding to the water as well every month or so.” He’d been giving plant food, mixed into the water, to help as well. You wouldn’t do it ever watering, that would be too much, but every so often was a good idea in general. He was doing most of what he’d normally do but he’d added the crystals to it which was the change, which he hoped would let them live down here.

“I’m considering getting lighting in here just for the plants, to encourage growth.” There was a lot he wanted to do and add to things. It wouldn’t be too hard, for him anyway, to add in hydroponic plants as well. His office just might wind up a jungle of sorts though…not that he minded, and who would know? It wasn’t like most visited him and he was certain people wouldn’t just wander into his office without him around - woe to anyone who might do something that stupid.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 11, 2023 9:20 pm

He understood wanting to see something as a certain way and realizing that way was false. That spoke to a lot of his life, really, but he wasn’t here to get philosophical with his former general. That was actually the last thing he needed, or wanted, considering everything – plants was something he could do that didn’t harken back to everything else.

Crystals.

“Lighting is a good idea, beyond general experimentation with crystals. Beyond plants that developed to grow in the shade and the dark, the greater majority of them need sunlight, and even those that don’t could benefit from it sometimes.” This office was going to look like a jungle by the time Benitoite was done with it. Fulgurite couldn’t blame him, necessarily – he also liked plants after all.

Good distraction from everything else, really.

“Sounds like you have a good system for this.” What were those crystals made out of? “Can’t hurt to try mixing them into the water. In theory, could allow more direct absorption and might help the plant growth.”
