Prompt 1: The weatherman said it was going to be a nice day today. Perfect time to go get some of those errands taken care of. Unfortunately, while you were shopping, heavy clouds rolled in and it began pouring outside. Do you chance it and run for your car or duck inside the nearest shop until the weather clears up?
“Bread, milk, ice cream,” She muttered to herself, absently ticking off her grocery list with her fingers, as she walked away from the bus stop. Shannon didn’t have a grand amount of time but if she wanted to eat over the next few days she had to get her shopping done today. The only thing left in her tiny fridge and even smaller pantry were some crackers and jelly. Yes she could survive off of that but she would rather night. She might be poor but she wasn’t that poor. Not anymore at least. She could do better.
She would do better.
“Dressing,” Shannon remembered what she was forgetting and pulled out her phone, quickly pulling up the notes app to add the remembered item to the growing list. Some might have to be cut since her budget was tight. With the way prices were going up quite a few things might need to be cut. The curvy woman absently scowled down at her phone, already trying to mentally pair down the list to only essentials. When a drop of water landed on the screen she absently wiped it off only to have several more mar the surface. At that point she looked up and realized it was starting to rain, and quite rapidly at that.
With a muttered curse she ran for the nearest store, not paying any attention to what it sold, ducking inside just as the heavens opened up and buckets after buckets of water started to deluge the city. Shannon was wet but only just so, which was good because she was dressed for the warm weather and didn’t particularly want to look like a drowned rat. As it was she looked and felt more like a damp person cat… unhappy and in need of a bath.
“Shhhheeeet, look at that down poor!” The voice came from the side, a glance determined it was a staff member manning the tills that decided to comment on the horrid rain. “You need a towel or somethin’ lady?” They asked Shannon.
For her part she shook her head, “No I’ll dry sooner rather than later. Any later and I would have needed a damn boat though.” Silver eyes took in the small store, a small bookstore actually. Nothing in there really interested her but she needed to do something to kill time. No way she was going out in that until the rain let up. She might need food but not drowning was much more important. “Mind if I wait out the storm here?” Not that she was going to take no for an answer, but being polite never hurt. At least until it wasn’t needed or no longer required.
“Be my guest.” The clerk shrugged. “If you need somethin’ just holler,” and went back to playing on their phone. Shannon nodded and meandered into the stacks, not expecting to find anything more than just a dry place to wait out the rain. What she did come across had her mentally cursing her miniscule bank account.
There, sitting in the self help section, were several books of interest for her. Books that could be quite useful for her more… interesting plans. Several that could be helpful in the long run as an officer. Now she had to make a choice, the books or food. <******** it… Alex could always reimburse her for the books.
She hoped.
