“So if my magical name’s Cynthus, what’s his?”
She didn’t know what she’d been expecting of a “Wonder.” The only thing she knew about the moon were craters and seas that weren’t really seas because there wasn’t any water, and those pictures of Buzz Aldrin’s footprint. Or was it Armstrong’s? Not like it mattered. The footprints weren’t sacred. In fact, Cynthus was beginning to wonder if anyone else setting foot here might have been a desecration.
She still found it hard to believe she was on the moon. Every time she found herself thinking this couldn’t possibly be real, she looked up and caught sight of the Earth.
“Do you have to give him one, too?” Cynthus asked, a piece of the Code still cradled in her hand, Riker at her side. “Or does whatever Ganymede is do that?”
She had so many questions, yet somehow didn’t know what to ask.

For a moment, Riker wasn’t sure what Maisie was talking about. Then he realized she was talking about him.
He blinked for a moment as he followed along, having been distracted by the vastness of space around them from the moon.
He hadn’t thought to think about being anyone but himself…
But then, that wasn’t exactly the whole truth. He didn’t have to think about it, because it was just… who he was.
“Reims,” he said after a moment, but even then he frowned at himself as though it was both foreign and familiar. It was strange to not know, but also to know. He certainly hadn’t been given a name. It just… always was. Kinda. He supposed he could ask the Code about it, but he didn’t want to sound stupid in front of Maisie-- Cynthus. Not any more than he had at least.

“I was going to be surprised if you showed up here without knowing your own name. But I suppose it’s not uncommon these days. I don’t assign all names, some Knights are born with them. There are those that have been reincarnated with the mantle, and those that carry it from their ancestors. But they all awaken when the time is right. Some early in life, some later, but always when they are ready to carry the burden of such responsibility. Once, there was an Academy to explain such things. And experienced Knights to guide the new ones. Now, that is a distant memory.” The Code didn’t seem to have much emotion, and yet there was something that felt almost sad about its words. “You were lucky to be in close proximity when your power came to you. I don’t have the luxury of bringing every Knight to the Moon for orientation and it's impossible to set up the resources to do much on Earth with the prominence of Chaos there. It would be too dangerous to try. I’ll make sure you both can come back to see me if you need anything, though. There will be a Code piece on your Wonder as well, Reims. But I’m afraid I can’t communicate easily through them. It requires too much energy and focus, so you’ll have to come visit another Cornerstone piece. You’re both doing well, I know this must be confusing.”

Confusing? Maybe.
Overwhelming? Also maybe.
Cool? Definitely.
Cynthus glanced at Riker — Reims — when he said his superhero name, then made a face at how strange it all sounded. What was Cynthus supposed to be anyway? And Reims? The moon seemed like such an empty, lonely place. “Distant memory” was right. There definitely hadn’t been anyone here in decades — longer, if the moon landings didn’t count. It wasn’t like they’d found any ruins back then.
“So knights have been a thing for a long time,” she assumed.
She wanted to ask about reincarnation, but knew if she got on that topic she’d get distracted by how no one on Earth knew this stuff, and if they did no one had ever told her, and if they’d never told her, why?
All this stuff about space and knights and Chaos seemed so big. Did something that important really have to be secret? Wouldn’t it be better if everyone knew, so everyone could work to stop it?
“What’s a Cornerstone piece?” she asked instead, trying to stay on one topic at a time, even if instinct compelled her to ask a bunch of questions at once. “Was that the bigger you back at the—... whatever that place was?”

Reims was very aware of how little he knew. Most of the time he just tried to do what he could to get from day to day.
This -- being a knight -- seemed more natural to him than anything else in his life. He felt a strange calm that he didn’t seem to notice before because he wasn’t trying to pay attention to it, but it was there. It was like something in his heart that held the energy and it was just… who he was.
He didn’t know what that meant, and it scared him to think that he had a chance to be someone that no one else knew. A chance to just be himself and not rely on what other people thought of him. Oh, but he still cared about what people thought, but at least this time they didn’t know him before.
“So… if it’s dangerous to try and figure out Knight orientation on Earth, does that mean we shouldn’t be telling other people who we are? Because…” he paused and glanced at Cynthus with something of a grimace. “I don’t think I’d want other people to know.
She’d already met him. She knew who he was, but things were different now. And he was curious about everything she was asking the Code, too. Even he had a Code piece. Somewhere. On Ganymede.

“Knights have been a thing for a very long time. But the universe has held less and less life, so their numbers have dwindled. It’s almost impossible to find anyone anywhere else. Earth is an exception in many ways. The abundance of life is unique, all things considered.” No amount of questions seemed to deter or fluster the Code; it spoke with a calm logic and didn’t seem the least bit annoyed but their curiosity. It respected good questions, after all, and they hadn’t been Knights for long enough for it to be exasperated by them. “You are correct about the Cornerstone piece. There are several like it, on different worlds. Though, they don’t all resonate as strongly as they used to. But that’s a subject for another day, I think. There’s enough to take in now that you don’t have to worry about such things. Reims, you are correct as well. You should not be revealing your identity to anyone without good reason. You’ll find allies, other Knights, and Senshi. It’s safe to give them your identity if you choose, but there’s no obligation to do so. You must be careful, otherwise. Chaos could be hiding in anyone you know. They could use your identity against you, to hurt you or the ones you love. You must be responsible. The Negaverse alone has great reach on Earth. They are always looking to gain an advantage. I don’t want anything to happen to either of you. So promise me you’ll be careful. If someone learns your identity, I have the power to give you a new one, but the price of that is high. You’d have to leave behind everything you knew.” It didn’t want to scare them, but it was being practical. “If you’re good at keeping secrets, you won’t have to worry, though. I’ll help you, regardless. But you mustn’t talk about this, or anything like this outside of those you know you can trust.”

Cynthus had every intention of heeding the Code’s warnings. She didn’t want to tell anyone about this. Not right now, at least. Dad would freak if he found out. Cynthus didn’t care to deal with that yet when she was just getting her feet beneath her as a Page.
The Negaverse sounded awful. Like, evil awful. Definitely supervillain worthy. Was it weird that she’d never noticed any of this stuff before? Even if it was kept secret, that was a big secret to keep under wraps all this time. There had to’ve been slip ups, right?
“We’ll be careful,” Cynthus assured the Code. She definitely didn’t want to leave everything behind and change who she was. Dad would cry, and, okay, Cynthus would miss him.
They came to a collection of decrepit buildings. Not a single one stood without damage. The air of rot and decay was heavy. Nose wrinkling as she looked around, Cynthus couldn’t even determine what it was supposed to be at first. There was what looked to be a well in the center of a square, which many of the buildings surrounded. In front of them, Cynthus noticed what appeared to be old carts and street stalls.
“So, what, was this some kind of market, maybe?”
She looked at Reims, then around the square again.
“Do you think your place is this much of a dump?” she asked. After a moment, she looked guiltily down at the piece of the Code cradled in her hands. “I mean, it’s great. Perfect, actually. I’ll fix it up and it’ll be good as new. Just… might need some manuals and how-to guides. I’ve never done home repairs before.”

Reims practically froze in place when they were told the Code had the power to give them a new identity if someone discovered theirs.
That they would have to leave behind everything they knew.
He felt his ears turning red, and he reached up to rub at one of them in frustration.
“You could do that? Just… wipe someone from existence and they’d have to start over?” he asked, trying not to sound like he was interested, because surely no one in their right minds would want to give up everything.
But the idea of starting over. Of knowing no one.
There was at least one person he wanted to know who he was, but maybe she wouldn’t mind if he didn’t ever talk to her again. They’d only crossed paths when his mother was doing her events, anyway.
Oh, but Cynthus was talking about her dump of a Wonder, and he quickly turned to look around them. “I hope mine doesn’t look like this,” he finally grimaced, but spared a glance at the Code and forced a smile. “No offense.”

“I take no offense. It’s your Wonder, if it’s your responsibility to protect and care for it. They have been in disrepair for a long time, so it is understandable that it might be daunting. You are very young, still,” the Code noted, without any air of disappointment or annoyance. It seemed to accept this response, and more than that it knew how much it was asking of her–of them. “I know you might be disappointed for now, but give it time. There has been no one to walk this land in many years. Time has been unkind. But I have faith in you, Cynthus. And you as well, Reims. What you put into your Wonder, it will give back to you. Is it so surprising to you that such magic could exist to help someone rewrite who they are? It’s troublesome. There are Mauvians–Guardian Cats, who can help create a new identity beyond appearances alone. But don’t worry about those things right now. You have so much else to learn, first. I’ll do my best to keep you safe in the event that your identity is compromised, but it won’t be easy. You should take things slow, if you can. Don’t jump into things too quickly. If you don’t like how your Wonders look now, you can spend time cleaning them up while you get used to your new powers.”

Cynthus spared a brief glance at Reims. He sounded more awed by the prospect of assuming a new identity than worried about having to do so, which struck her as odd.
Then again, he was kind of a weird guy to begin with. Not bad, just… Well, she didn’t know how to describe him, really. He was just Reims.
The important thing now was her Wonder, and the amount of repairs it would need to look even remotely habitable. As for what it was, she’d go with the assumption of a market until proven otherwise. A market could be fun. It was like she owned a mall, only the shops were primarily outdoors and the setup was ancient and there wasn’t anything for sale.
Maybe there could be, one day.
“What happens to you?” she asked the piece of the Code still cradled in her hands. “Where do you go, now that we’re here? It doesn’t look like there’s any fancy place for you to, like, float and swirl around like back at those other ruins.”

“Maybe we can find a place,” Reims suggested, hoping that the offer to help was obvious. There were plenty of places to choose from, it seemed. And if it was some kind of open air market, then maybe there was something at the center of everything that would be a good fit for a magical talking orb.
Besides, looking for a place for the Code to chill out was better than the thoughts he had of not having anyone know him.
“Want me to help clean up? I can probably carry heavier things than you. And you don’t look like you’ve done a lot of manual labor. No offense,” he added again as he glanced over Cynthus.
Not that he did a lot of manual labor, but she seemed more picky about breaking nails than he did. She definitely didn’t seem like the type to jump into things too quickly.

The Code was quiet for a moment, not because it had nothing to say but because it didn’t seem as though it was in any rush to interrupt them while they were planning how to repair it. Having help was a good idea when there was so much work to be done. Here, on the Moon. Probably on Reims, too. “I will stay here on your Wonder,” it answered. “I have no physical form beyond this by which to help you restore it, but I can attune with the magic that flows her. I can grant you and your Wonder the strength to protect itself, and heal, in time. All you need to do is find somewhere safe where I will be protected in your absence. It doesn’t have to be somewhere fancy, just somewhere protected. As you clear out more of this place, I am sure you will find better locations. This doesn’t have to be permanent, just a starting off point. While you are gone, I will keep an eye on your Wonder. If there is danger, I will call you back to it. But you can come and go as you please.”

Cynthus gave Reims a look.
Okay, so he wasn’t wrong. She hadn’t done much manual labor. The most she could claim was cleaning her room every once in a while, but that was easy compared to… this. Not that she expected Reims to have much more experience. He was her age, definitely not a stonemason or a carpenter or a plumber or whatever else might be needed to get this place up and running again.
Still, he didn’t need to make it out like she was weak. She’d been chosen for this, hadn’t she? She was the one who had a magical piece of… magic… cradled in her hands, entrusting her with this. Sure, he got to be a superhero, too, but his circumstances were different, weren’t they? He wasn’t chosen, he just was.
“Fine, you can help,” Cynthus told him. She didn’t really relish the thought of tackling this on her own.
Then she looked around for some place the Code might like to stay. Even if it didn’t have to be anything fancy, she wanted to make sure wherever she left it wasn’t totally falling apart.
Definitely not one of the decrepit stalls.
Maybe the well?
“How do we leave? Or get back here once we have?” she asked.

He was glad that he didn’t have to find a place to put his own piece of the Code at this mysterious Wonder named Reims on the world of Ganymede (apparently), but he knew he would eventually have to go and find the piece. Although he didn’t know what he would do other than look at it or chat with it. Would it talk back? He wasn’t sure. It seemed chatty now, but that might change.
Reims was a little disappointed when Cynthus asked how they left. Yeah, she asked how they could get back once they did get back to Earth, but did they really have to talk about leaving so soon?
Maybe he should be careful about going to his Wonder. He might not want to leave. But he also didn’t know anything about it.
He looked down at himself again in his dark clothes with the charms in the shape of hearts broken with lightning.
Reims didn’t know what any of this meant. Not really. He could feel the power, he could hear everything the Code was telling them. He knew Cynthus agreed to be magical as well, but what were they really getting into…?
And yet… he couldn’t help but think it would be better than whatever else was going on in his life.
“Can we come back whenever we want?” he asked, although he knew it was Cynthus’s Wonder. He just wasn’t sure he was ready to go to his own alone.

“When you are ready to return to Earth, you need to focus on where you were last. Your will alone will be enough to carry you there. To return is much the same. It may not be easy at first,” the Code answered. “When you want to visit your Wonder, all you need to do is focus. Clear your mind. There is a connection to it inside of you. As you are now, you will not be able to travel often.” It was quiet, and though it had no eyes it had the distinct impression of simply observing Cynthus’ Wonder. “But as you come into your role, it will become easier. As you gain strength, the same. There are Knights that can travel once, twice per week. It will take time and dedication but this is not a race. You’ll get there, in time.”
