The feline yawned as he stood. Taking a moment, he stretched his body out starting in the front and shifting to stretch even his back peets. Beans splayed as he relished the feeling before finally hopping off of the rapidly heating car roof he’d placed himself on in the morning. People didn’t seem to mind a cat sleeping on a car roof. It did sometimes reward him with an offered tasty morsel but this morning’s slumber left him with an empty stomach that was in need of being taken care of.

Food. The love of his life. Even if it was difficult to get a hold of sometimes. But, Magnus had begun to think of it like an art. Plus, he was stationed close to his usual abode, a run down, near dilapidated church of some denomination he didn’t care to find out. This neighborhood he felt he had created a good relationship with some of the food joint workers and owners. As long as he didn’t make a habit of visiting one place too often he typically was greeted with excitement and yumminess. The biggest problem of the moment was figuring out who he wanted to go to.

I just hit up Tony’s last week. He mused to himself as he padded down a sidewalk, dodging people as the walked by oblivious to him. It’s so warm out. Maybe something cold? That didn’t leave many options. An ice cream parlor on the corner two blocks over by the name of ‘Sweets ‘n Such’ always enjoyed his visits but ice cream wasn’t going to cut it. He was looking for a mid-day meal.

A little girl took him by surprise as she ran over to pet him. His coat wasn’t the most well kempt and it was obvious by the shouts of her mother that the woman also did not agree to this action happening, but beyond a small spooked jump, he let it happen. The girl was obviously not well versed in how to pet animals, especially cats as she pushed down a biit roughly as she uncomfortable pet his head.

“Mommy look!” She said as the woman finally came over to grab the girl’s hand. “He’s got a star.” She seemed delighted.

The woman on the other hand was not. “What did I tell you about petting random animals? He’s dirty and smelly and you’re lucky he didn’t scratch you. Come on.” The girl was practically dragged away wailing about how she wanted her own kitty.

The feline sighed heavily. He had worked hard to cover up his mark a bit this morning when he first woke up. He didn’t like to fully cover the purple star but a good coat of grime was enough to help blend it in and make it less noticeable at first glance. He’d worry about food then dirtying himself up again. His grumbling stomach agreed.

Tama did not usually leave Negaspace.

At first his aversion to coming to Destiny City had been entirely trauma-induced. Faustite had corrupted him on these very streets and there was still a feral part of his brain that associated them with danger. This was not a place for him. Not a place for Mauvians.

But he had not always thought that way. There was a time when he openly prowled these streets looking for senshi to guide and the good he could do. There was a time when he knew these streets like the back of his paw. Those times were no longer.

Had they ended when he had been corrupted or had they ended well before then, when he went to live with that knight as a kept pet?

The only reason he was where now was because he had cash to spend — what little he had managed to get out of the ill-fated bank operation. He was standing in his human form in front of an ATM collecting the last bits of cash when he saw the cat.

“Who does that cat think he’s fooling? Even a child can she he does not belong here.”

Tama shook his head, hid down an alley and turned into his cat form and raced after the other ‘cat’.

“Hey! You. Mauvian. What are you doing by yourself out on the street?”

Magnus was just slipping down a side alley that would take him to the back of the butcher shop when he heard someone shouting. Now normally, he wouldn't have stopped but it was the very specific vocabulary of what he was that gave him pause. So he paused, glancing behind him to see who it was that had called him because it sure wasn't going to be some random passer-by.

Blue eye alighted upon the white feline the mark on his forehead a clear indicator of who he was while the chaos energy denoted where this mauvian's alliances lead. Now, Magnus had never been one to shy away from someone of the opposite faction. In fact, some of them like Niter, could be enjoyable company even if he didn't agree with their methods and ideology.

He turned to face the pale mauvian, a tilt of his head indicating his confusion for the question. "Looking for food at the moment, but I could ask you the same thing." He flashed a toothy smile. "I am pretty sure we're both out roaming the street right now."

The tip of his tail flicked back and forth. "If you're looking for lunch I think we will have luck at the butcher shop." The place was likely to have some tasty morsels so late in the morning. A little beef perhaps if he was really lucky! "The owners there have taken a bit of a shine to me if I do say so myself." He chuckled.

“I am certainly not out here looking for food.” Tama said a bit sanctimoniously. Sure, he liked to hunt occasionally. It was only natural. Sometimes a little violence and a fresh kill was what was needed to keep one from getting complacent.

But hoping for human scraps? Absolutely not!

“Do you know someone at the butcher shop? A senshi or knight that keeps you?”

He hoped the owners there were looking out for him and not just feeding him whatever was left after their own meals.

Magnus wasn't bothered by the tone of the other Maus voice. "Youre loss. They tend to have some good beef." He flicked his tail as he turned around, glancing over his shoulder to his stubby tailed friend. After all, opposites on the war or not, they were both Maus. So obviously friends.

"I am not kept." He said with the smallest hint of pride. "I prefer to be able to roam. Staying in one place is dull." Plus, his wanderings allowed him to meet people. The downfall was the inability to hold long term relationships. When one moved constantly they were typically difficult to find again.

He turned on toughened paws and continued on his journey. He paused a moment to glance at his friend. "You really should come with. Lunch is a important as breakfast." A pause. "I am Magnus by the way." He flashed a grin as he began padding down the sidewalk, dirty, tangled tail flashed behind him. "What's your name?" He called back in expectation that the white mau followed.

So, he was alone.

Tama didn’t know how to feel about it, but it made him feel a little sad. Sure, there was nothing wrong with being alone. He just didn’t like the idea of this Mauvian being on the street. He seemed entirely too nice for that.

“Well, if you think it’s good.” His voice said he wasn’t entirely sure. But whether it was the quality of the meat or what he was about to do, he was unsure. “You go on ahead. I’ll be right there. Don’t want to make them think they are feeding two right away.”

But what he really wanted was a little distance so that the other Mau could not hear what he was whispering into his communicator.

“You know, you don’t have to live on the street to be able to roam. I’m Tama, by the way.”

Not that he thought the butcher would mind doting on two cats. She was obviously a person of good taste with her love of felines, but Magnus let Tama hang back as he focused his attention on his destination. They had been incredibly close. Just a little narrow alley leading to the back door was what separated the felines from lunch.

Magnus meowed at the back door loudly, raising a paw to scratch at the metal frame.

The white Mau reappeared then. "If you didn't want her to know there were two of us right away you should have waited just a bit longer." He remarked teasingly.

"I know. I could probably have any home I wanted, but I prefer it this way. It's easier."

The door clicked and Magnus went back to his meowing as a portly, middle aged woman appeared wearing a stained white apron over black pants and a dark long-sleeved shirt. The grey Mau rubbed his body against her leg in greeting and the woman laughed. "Baxter! I was wondering when I would see you again." She reached down to let him, catching the sigh of Tama with the movement, "Oh! You brought a friend." She smiled at Tama.

"Let me see what I can scrounge up for you two." Her smile never fading the woman closed the door behind her to search for some food for the two.

Magnus flashed a grin at Tama. "Lunch will be served shortly, Tama."

“Any home you wanted, hrm?”

Tama was amused. There was a time when he, too, thought he could have any home he wanted. But that was not to be anymore.

Then he let out a sad ‘meow’ when the woman approached and looked up with eyes of small pleading that even he still knew how to make. If he had remembered anything about his life before awakening as a Mauvian, he would know that he was not quite the stranger to begging for food that he thought of himself to be. But he also remembered none of that time anymore.

He winced at the fact that the woman did not know Magnus’s true name. What a waste! To be called by whatever name the human fancied. At least, the woman was kind. It was something quite rare in this world and something he was gradually forgetting how to be.

“Lunch indeed.”

I have a favor to ask was not the message Faustite ever expected to receive from Tama. He regarded the message with furrowed brows as he looked from it to Headache. Though it was rather like looking at Tama, for the cloud of fireflies had assumed the furry white tailless cat's form. And his voice, too, which Faustite thought was a nauseous discovery.

Headache finished the message in Tama's voice, though it was delivered slowly and lacking the sharpness of the Mauvian's quick wit.

"How the ******** am I supposed to do that," he asked the youma. "Not like I can ******** turn it off."

Headache regarded him silently. The creature reverted to its native form shortly before becoming Eion, who again stared on silently.

"You expect me to bring my glamour into this — whatever this ******** favor is." He regarded the youma with a lidded stare. "Fine. ******** fine. He isn't giving me any ******** details, besides." As much as Faustite rather liked collecting favors, he hated going into something blind. But the Mauvian hadn't left him much choice; he all but demanded Faustite's presence as Eion with that stipulation alone.

Huffing, Faustite typed his response at a painstaking pace: YOU OWE ME ANOTHER FAVOR.

It took a few extra moments, but the pair worked out Tama's position soon enough. It was only so much energy to then teleport nearby, landing himself in the narrow alleyway between two hundreds-of-years-old buildings with nary so much as a guard railing between them. Given that the width of the space was barely enough for Faustite to stand with shoulders brushing both sides, he was assured of some measure of privacy. After a momentary glance in either direction, Faustite the General became Eion the Nobody, and Eion the Nobody finished sidling through the narrow space to rejoin the real world.

They found that Tama's location was somewhere on Elm St, which Eion knew to be a few blocks to the east. He was yet dressed in running clothes, which let him make haste toward the area without garnering any odd looks. Once he oriented himself with the nearest cross-streets, he took off at a clip and kept his eyes open for one white Mauvian.

He needn't go far; by the time he turned on Elm St, it was only a few buildings down the narrow street that he saw a white puffball at a door. There was another puffball he hadn't seen before, too, and it looked like they were soliciting an older lady. He stopped then, attention on the pair while he crouched down to take off his shoe and pantomime removing a rock.

Old lady must've felt ******** lucky to have two cats. What the ******** was Tama up to now?

Tama spotted Eion output of the corner of his eye. But even though he had been the one to call him, the Mauvian was still rather surprised that he had turned up in glamour. He’d more than half expected him to show up all fire and a general-king’s aura for all his wishes.

Well, he’d take pleasantly surprised.

“Seems like we’ll get a feast.” Tama said with a glance over his shoulder to the crouching boy. “I hope it wouldn’t be long.”

Then he put his arm around Magnus hoping Faustite would catch his motion that the other cat was the target and not the poor soul fetching them food.

He supposed they were both marks in a way.

Magnus was a bit surprised by Tama as that paw and arm went around him. Such a chummy action! Magnus hadn't been blind to the other mauvian's slightly stand-offish nature despite Magnus's own attempts to circumnavigate it. So he was both tickled and confused. And it showed in his demeanor as he eyes Tama and nodded.

"I don't know if it'll be a feast." He remarked as he looked to Tama, oblivious to anyone passing by the alley they were situated in. "But it should be tasty." He licked his lips at the thought of what their benefactor may bring them.

He glanced back at the door as some noise could be heard just beyond it. A clattering of something on metal before th door opened up to reveal the portly woman again. She beamed down at the two felines as Magnus meowed up at her, tail whipping skyward as he slipped from Tama's embrace to brush against her leg and between them. She laughed at him. "You're such a charmer." She remarked before placing two mismatched metal bowls on the ground for them just outside of the door.

"I can't stay and entertain you today. I've got too much to do, but enjoy yourself. At least you've got company today." She said as she rubbed a hand down Magnus's back. Her fingers paused a moment on a small matt near the base of his tail. She clicked her tongue. "Next time we're going to have to take care of that."

Magnus just meowed up at her and watched as she turned from them to return to work, closing teh door behind her.

Magnus grinned at Tama. "I think I smell chicken and beef." He said with genuine glee as she hurried to one of the bowls. Sure enough there were some scraps of beef mixed in with the usual chicken gizzards he typically got from her. All of it was roughly chopped into comfortable edibile sizes for the felines.

Great, they were eating carcass scraps on their lonesome. They were both asses in the air while munching away on something that Faustite would've deposited straight into his grate, to the chagrin of everyone who shared a space with him. Eion didn't want anything to do with gassy Mauvians, since Tama all but called this one out as one of those feline impersonators. He presumed that all this to-do was to end in the other cat's conscription into the Negaverse, but beyond that? Eion supposed he was the one to come up with the plan.

From where he knelt, he spied beyond the bumper of the car to watch the older lady head back inside. The other cat had played her up to a clearly intentional level, and the old lady must have been lonely enough to fall for it, though she didn't stick around to pet the pair of mangy meatbags while they ate.

That would be his entrance, then. Jogger boy who spotted a pair of fleabags and, completely heedless of the possibility of rabies or even animal aggression, wandered over to pet them after removing a rock from his shoe. It sounded stupid enough to be real life. People pulled that horseshit all the time. They even tried to pet youma and expected to escape with their lives.

Sighing to himself, Eion pulled his jacket tighter about himself as he rose up. Checking both ways, the street looked dead for cars and people. Better that way, he supposed. Fewer loose ends to tie up.

He strode across the street, focus on the two cats, and he slowed as he neared them. He still remembered how he used to approach stray dogs when he was Elex — full of reverence and delight. full of excitement when he hadn't yet scared one off. He did as he remembered: approached slow, crouched down, tried to minimize his size in comparison to the pair of fake felines before him. It all felt ******** idiotic. It felt like the flimsiest sham, knowing that they were all three intelligent creatures, knowing that the intended result didn't need such a vacuous pretense as this.

But he would try, and then he would make Tama miserable for it later. Tama would be Target Number One, of course.

"Hi, Kitty," Eion spoke softly as he reached out to let the furbag sniff him. "Can I pet you?"

Why did Eion have to go and act all normal and friendly and kind?

God, it almost made him feel guilty.

Seeing him introduce himself to Magnus like that almost made Tama forget what he was going to do and why. It reminded him of that stupid knight all over again. Kind to any cat he saw. Foster or stray. It made him think that there might just be a person out there for Magnus. A normal life with some average civilian and a cat cafe.

Why was he remembering a cat cafe?

Tama shook his head. Memories could ******** themselves and produce kittens for all he cared.

“I suppose you’re gonna pet me, too.” Tama said sarcastically. “Magnus, this is a… er, friend… of mine. We’d like to offer you a place to stay.”

He hoped to hell Magnus didn’t refuse. He really didn’t want to do this the hard way.

Magnus had wasted no time in digging in. He scarfed the food down in heeping gulps like any gluttonous feline would. Tama was still hanging back, eyes to the road. Magnus was aware of someone approaching by the scuff of shoes on asphalt and cement. Licking his lips he lifted his head from the bowl, eyes focusing on the teenager.

The request for pets wasn't abnormal. He had it happen often enough from children but the fact that Tama was obviously friends with this dark-haired boy started the alarm bells ringing in the Mau's head. While he was comfortable speaking to one chaos-oritented being, he was well aware that he was now outnumbered (assuming the same lean into chaos for the new arrival as well).

"Honestly I"d rather you didn't." He remarked as he stepped away from the silver bowl, food now forgotten. Blue eyes looked beyond the new arrival as he calculated his escape. Going the opposite direction, he knew, would eventually end in a dead end. Though there was copious amounts of hiding places amongst the trash, cans and bins if need be.

"I don't need a place to stay." He said casually as he inched himself to the side he'd have a better chance at escaping through though marginally a wider escape route. "I am quite content where I am right now." He glanced to Tama who, unfortunately, was closer to the route out, but he'd risk that over someone with thumbs right now.

"It was nice to meet you Tama." He said. He had enjoyed the other Mau's presence, even if it was brief. Having conversation was always a treat, but now he was set to bolt.

Magnus, in all his alley-cat glory, made a run for it to pass the teen and hurry to the street where he hoped they wouldn't pursue.

The hand that shot out to snatch Magnus's scruff was charcoal black. Around it lay small collections of ash which quickly evaporated. The rest of Eion smoked and smoldered, sloughing off swaths of skin to reveal the burning boy beneath the guise. Flame eyes lit on the mangy sack of fur in his grasp, enmity clear and present. "No one says no to me," he warned.

Then his attention slid to Tama. He offered a shoulder, but said nothing more to the cat.

In the seconds that followed, they were no longer in Destiny City. Suddenly they occupied what looked to be an office space, and one that was in part familiar to Tama for the mounted youma leg on the wall or the framed musical score, but the space was larger than it used to be. The furniture was quite different, too, no longer made of simple but functional metal and glass. What occupied the room were handmade, matching sets of regal gothic furniture with hand-molded filigree of metal and encrusted rubies. Onyx wove its way into the designs, dotting the great oval-shaped glass desk and darkening the crystalline claws of its feet. A number of matching chairs sported hepplewhite shield backs and negative spaces filled with ruby and glass. Only the seats were upholstered with a crimson, heatproof plastic that protected the plush padding.

It looked grandiose, and Faustite thought his new office looked preposterous, but the furniture was commissioned by a boy, so he would keep it forever.

The cat bed had migrated to one of the guest chairs, and Faustite gestured toward it for Tama. "Got one chance to turn this around before I fill him so full of chaos that he pops." Unamused, his attention returned to the mangy cat that he had scruffed at arm's length. It only occurred to him later that he should've rolled down his sleeves before he committed to teleporting all of them to his office.
