The text message wasn’t particularly surprising, but it was interesting. Brielle had texted to ask if she could meet with Devyn and Michael, and suggested a time and place. It was discreet, it was responsible. She said little while saying very much.

It was easy to deduce that she had something important to talk about. It was safe to talk in person. Not so much over the phone.

Devyn appreciated the discretion, especially after everything that had just happened with Faustite. Plus, it just so happened to be a nice day, and he always liked an excuse to take a walk in the park. Especially with Michael.

He had a soft spot in his heart for the picnic table by the lake. There was just something about the area–peaceful, away from the city–that felt like it was a world away from the bustling metropolis despite being right in the middle of it. You almost couldn’t even hear the sound of traffic or construction.

Clouds peppered the sky, drifting over the sun occasionally. The breeze was gentle, and the scent of flowers carried on the wind.

Devyn was dressed much the same as he always was–a white shirt, tight around the torso but with loose sleeves. Tight pants, tall boots. He always looked like he was at least partially dressed up, even when he didn’t have anywhere to go. He was comfortable; his hair was tied up and he’d only done a bit of makeup around his eyes. Not much, never much. Little pieces of Alastorian custom that he couldn’t leave behind. He wasn’t dripping in jewelry–some, sure. A bracelet Atticus had made him dangled proudly from his wrist, but everything else was mostly reeled in.

He walked next to Michael as they approached, and must have been telling an animated story judging by the way he was moving his hands–hands that stopped as soon as he spotted Brielle approaching, too. He smiled at her, and waved, and placed one hand on Michael’s back as they approached. Whatever story he’d been telling, he could finish later.

He was too interested in whatever she had going on to dwell on it now.

Brielle wore sandals. They were orthopedic ones, of course, but they were still pretty, with crossing straps. After some consideration, she'd decided she didn't mind if people saw her scars. She also wore a short sleeved blouse and a pair of flowy pants. Things were finally starting to be a palatable temperature, and she was going to make the most of it with her clothes.

She brought a fancy coffee for herself, and two drinks to share in a cardboard barrier which she set down on the table as everyone drew near

Michael got a smile first, and the drink carton was nudged in his direction. She wanted so badly for things not to be awkward between the two of them, but they kept meeting under the worst kinds of situations.

Hopefully this could be different.

After all, she came bearing interesting news.

Anser had been worried about said news and enthusiastic about Cybele's proposed solution, but she wanted to run her thoughts past a few more sets of ears. Devyn had a good head on his shoulders for tactics and planning. He'd managed to get Chaos off of a whole planet on his own, after all.

"You'll never guess what an agent let slip," se said, one eyebrow half quirked, as she settled into the table.

Michael was smiling at Devyn as they walked, listening to his story with full attention, but he couldn’t help the adoration in his eyes. Devyn could have been talking about the grass he watched grow, and Michael would have been happy to listen.

When Devyn stopped and lifted his hand to wave to Brielle, Michael’s attention shifted as well. He was a bit more boring than Devyn and Brielle in terms of clothing. Black jeans and a white with gray striped button down shirt was his outfit of choice. Instead of tall boots or pretty sandals he opted for sneakers.

He offered Brielle a smile and quiet thanks for the coffee and took his before holding the other out for Devyn as he sat down at the table.

“Please tell me it’s the General Sovereigns' civilian identities,” Michael said with half hearted optimism. It was too much to try and take those bastards out in their own homes.

“I will never guess,” Devyn agreed, but he seemed good natured and smiled as he settled onto the seat across from her. He accepted the drink Michael passed to him as he made himself comfortable next to him.

“Thank you,” he said to Brielle first, because he always minded his manners, and he took a sip instinctively.

He didn’t have the same optimism Michael had, but he was perplexed all the same and leaned forward a bit, like he was waiting for Brielle to share some juicy secret.

“Don’t hold me in suspense, is it something good?”

She didn’t seem upset or frightened, so he hoped that meant it wasn’t something bad.

"I don't know that good is the right word," said Brielle, taking a thoughtful sip of her own drink. "Useful, yes. No identities yet," her gaze flicked towards Michael, "Although discovering some might still be in the realm of possibility. I'm not sure."

Being able to ambush some of the higher-ups in their own home would probably be the easiest way to strike a crippling blow to the Negaverse, it was true. Brielle wasn't above doing it, either. It was unfortunate that things hadn't worked out quite in that way.

"They've taken over a bank," she said, not about to draw it out any more. "Called Augusta. Downtown."

She let that sink in for about three seconds, her index finger tapping against the wood of the picnic table, before she added, "Now, my source for this isn't something I was going to just trust. I heard about this third or fourth hand, and it started with Nectaris and one of her Chaos friends, which," with effort, Brielle managed not to roll her eyes, but the tapping stopped and her fingernail dug into the edge of the table instead as she exhaled sharply.

"Nectaris used to be Sylvite, if you didn't know. The one who corrupted me."

There was more to unpack there, but this wasn't the time or place.

"So I started looking into it myself. I went to the area powered a few times, and I found significantly more Chaos auras passing through than you'd expect in the financial district, especially during the daytime. I went inside as a civilian and asked around a bit, like I was thinking about doing business, and I found out that there's been an exceptionally high amount of turnover during the past two months."

She looked between the two of them.

"I think it's true."

Michael was quiet for a little while as he thought about everything Brielle told them. Knowing points of interest to the Negaverse would be good to keep an eye on, in case anything happens. It seemed a little risky for them to be powered up during daylight hours, which he decided was a good thing.

Because it meant that they were careless.

He didn’t need to remind her that if she could feel them, they could probably feel her when she was powered, and to be careful not to be too suspicious. He kept his thoughts to himself by taking a sip of his coffee and shifting his foot over to rest the edge of his shoe against Devyn’s boot. It could have even been considered accidental, except he didn’t move it away after contact.

“What do you think we’re looking at? A place where they’re laundering money? Using it as a cover for something else? Finding a way to turn coins or cash into ways to drain energy?” he asked, and then glanced over at Devyn with a little shrug, then explained.

“The Velencians had crystals or something to drain energy, and we know the Negaverse has been doing it in various ways with different rates of success.”

Devyn was adjusting to Earth fairly well; he thought he could blend in for the most part. There seemed to be an infinite amount of things to learn, and he held no illusions that he’d ever know all of it. But, he tried. He did his best.

He understood that the Negaverse worked in secret, infiltrated wherever they thought they could extract power. He also understood that they tried to be discreet, that they worked in secrecy.

He wasn’t sure if he was missing something, now.

It wasn’t Brielle that he was considering, it was the Negaverse.

Taking over a bank could mean many things; he wasn’t so sure about the internal workings of that but he supposed that it would require far more scrutiny than any other job. Back on Alastor, there were always hoops to jump through to ensure financial security. He hadn’t heard of the bank, but that wasn’t surprising. He didn’t think he’d actually ever been in one on Earth, thanks to Michael’s magical credit cards. What he knew of them was superficial, so he relied on what the two others said to put the pieces together.

He nudged his foot gently back against Michael’s in quiet indication that he was listening. He might not have understood everything, but he understood enough.

Hearing something third hand was questionable, but he trusted that she would have done her research . She wouldn’t have gotten so invested in all of this if she didn’t have a solid belief that the information was reliable. Michael made a good point, and he couldn’t help but wonder if the Negaverse might have been suspicious once they felt her signature–and if they weren’t, he supposed they were either ignorant and foolish or up to something. Enemies who wanted to be found usually had something far worse up their sleeve.

But, she was unscathed so far. Walked into a den of monsters to investigate, but he’d have probably done the same in her shoes. He wanted to suggest that Michael should stick around and see if there was anything he could observe–given his ability to sense energy signatures without producing one of his own.

He didn’t volunteer the thought.

Devyn nodded as Brielle spoke, as Michael explained. He tapped the cup he’d been given but didn’t drink from it. He agreed with Michael's questions, they were a good starting point. He had a few of his own but kept it simple to start with.

“And what do you want to do about all of it?”

"The more we get into those sort of details, the more it starts getting into guesswork," said Brielle, her brows furrowing until a line formed between them, because she really did wish she had a better answer. "I know a few things about Infiltration. Not a lot. It wasn't my area of expertise even when I was corrupted, but," her lips pressed thin, too, "The obvious answer is that they want money. Could be laundering, could be legal. Or, they could be draining, that's always a common theme. They could just be trying to make sure their agents are dispersed and influential."

That had been one of the Negaverse's goals. She remembered that much, even if the details of where exactly they might have been trying to place people felt strangely fuzzy around the edges, the way so many of her limited memories were.

It didn't narrow things down much.

"I want to stop them before whatever they're planning has time to get off the ground," she told them. "I was thinking about trying to destroy the building. We could look for additional evidence while we do it."

Her confidence faltered a bit, there. She knew that they had to do something, but she wasn't here to try to sway them into helping with her one and only plan. She was looking for reassurance, or a second opinion.

But she was asking of it from people who she knew could do what needed to be done.

“Destroy a building in downtown Destiny City,” Michael said out loud as though to clarify for himself what she was saying. What she was planning. At some point his eyebrows had furrowed with concern and he leaned against the table to make sure their conversation was as private as possible.

“What would the purpose of destroying the building be?” he asked, careful to keep his voice as non-judgmental as possible. If she was going to do something like this, and she sounded like she already had her mind made up despite some seemingly faltering confidence, he would rather she reach out to them than others who he didn’t trust to be as reliable.

“You might not remember if your memories are scrambled, but that’s exactly what the Negaverse would blame on Senshi and Knights. They’d accuse us of being terrorists and destroying the city. We would be giving them exactly what they wanted,” he warned as gently as he could. He didn’t sound like he was reprimanding her, more like sharing information that Devyn could benefit knowing as well.

“It’s what the Negaverse does. Destroy things, or make our side destroy things, and then say how horrible we are. They have the influence and sympathizers. If anything, the physical bank could just be a cover for something else, and they could easily relocate while gaining information about us. It would be dangerous. People could get hurt. It would cause chaos and fear if a building was destroyed in the middle of downtown. Especially if Senshi and Knights are associated with its destruction.”

Earth was complicated in many ways. If this were Alastor, Devyn knew exactly how he’d deal with it. But here…

Here, there was so much to lose. Here, there were too many things out of his control.

He wouldn't say it out loud, but he hated the strange feeling of helplessness that came with having to carefully navigate ‘how to deal with things’. He didn’t want to be a monster.

But he knew what Chaos did to someone. He’d have killed them if it meant giving Earth a chance to heal. If it meant that less people trying to do the right thing died because of the Negaverse.

This was a war. They were soldiers by choice.

If they were willing to kill, then they should be willing to die.

Devyn didn’t think he was a good person, not compared to the people who had the strength to give people chance after chance. To fight evil with goodness. To heal.

He’d spent a thousand years trying heal his world, and Chaos had stripped away everything but its Core. He didn’t want the people of Earth to go through that. He didn’t want Earth to go through that.

He was willing to get his hands dirty so others could keep them clean. He thought Brielle was probably the same. Michael was, too.

They were both right. Destroying it before it could get off the ground was a necessity. But, destroying anything so publicly would draw attention.

He’d had his fair share of trying to navigate the public opinion. It was different on Earth. Most things were. The public might not have had names, or specific people to blame, but the Negaverse–the media–only needed to blame an idea. A hypothetical type of person, a fabricated villain to fuel their narrative and push for the changes they wanted while protecting themselves.

If they were being sloppy, maybe they wanted to be caught. The thought kept lingering in the back of his mind. He’d walked into plenty of traps knowing what they were but having no other option. She just needed to be prepared for what it might be.

He tapped his finger on his cup again and then, finally, spoke.

“I have a hard time thinking that they would deliberately be so disorganized. That’s unlike them, especially if we’re supposed to assume they’ve infiltrated other establishments before. If you’re planning an attack, you need to be safe about it. You need to anticipate that they want this.”

Maybe she’d already figured this out, but he was repeating it for its importance more than anything else. Michael was right, and Devyn trusted his caution.

“I don’t trust any obvious answer. If they want money, they could teleport into the vault and take whatever they want. A Mauvian could hack their systems and fabricate funds. I think.” He glanced between the two of them and was more than willing to to be corrected. There were still many things for him to learn.

“A building is just a building. I agree with Michael. Damaging it will might negative repercussions, and it doesn't necessarily guarantee that you'll really hit them where it hurts. But.”

He tapped the cup again and then leaned forward a bit as well. “You won’t have time to do everything you want to do alone. And the more people you get involved, the more your plan will stray. People always take things into their own hands and do what they think is best, especially when they have no authority to report to. If you want to find evidence, you can’t go in planning to destroy everything. If you want to destroy it, you have to plan an escape route, and that’s harder when your hand is full of evidence. If this is a trap, they’ll already have things ready and waiting. So you have to be prepared for everything.”

Even if it was just precaution.

He wasn’t the expert here on Earth, but he appreciated her calling them there all the same. The look in his expression wasn’t one of dismissal or reproach; he trusted her. Believed in her. He wanted her to be prepared for whatever might happen, and to make sure that she had the support she needed.

“I think the most important thing is to figure out what you want out of this. And how we can help.”

"Terrorists. Gangsters," said Brielle, raising a finger for each. "I know." She was aware of the rumors even if she hadn't been the one starting them. It was hard to avoid mentions of it for too long, even just scrolling through social media in Destiny City.

"And I don't want to play into the stereotype without a good reason. If I'm wrong, we'd be destroying property and putting honest people out of work. I don't think I'm wrong."

Also, the Negaverse made plenty of mistakes. They could be deadly organized. She'd seen that side of them. She'd also been at the meeting where Faustite couldn't get half of the Lieutenants to give them their names because they were so determined to do their own thing. She'd seen other times when they were sloppy.

"But I'd be willing to double and triple check what evidence we can find about that beforehand, or have others check. I think it's fair to assume that they know they're opening themselves up. I just-" She swallowed.

"I don't want the fact that they might call us terrorists to hold us back. They'll do it, anyway, even if we just sit around doing nothing at all. They'll burn something down and blame us. They've done it before."

She said that with confidence, the not-quite memories feeling close to the surface.

"What I want?" she asked, and that was harder to answer. "I want to do something concrete for once. I want to do something proactive, to stop this before it explodes into something where the Negaverse gets more power, or else something where they're trying to drain and starseed in broad daylight. It's all Order can do to pick up the pieces and there's still always corpses left at the end."

It had happened even in the short time she could remember, and something in the back of her mind told her that it was a pattern.

“What evidence are you looking for? You know how far the Negaverse reaches. You know they’ve got their hands in everything,” he reminded her, although he was good about keeping any frustration he might have had out of his voice.

“I don’t think it’s fair to decide for everyone that it doesn’t matter if we’re seen as terrorists. There have been a lot of Senshi and Knights and Mauvians who have been working to try and keep our reputation something that those inside the Negaverse, questioning it, would look at and see that the Negaverse and the destruction they cause isn’t the answer. If they see that we’re doing the damage anyway…”

He could only imagine those who might be wondering if they should leave deciding that the Negaverse was right all along and Senshi and Knights were just as bad, if not worse, because they paraded around their self righteousness and called themselves things like ‘Order’ when it was anything but.

Then again, Michael had been possibly the only one who hadn’t joined hands at the Surrounding, hoping and praying for divine intervention when he believed they had no right to ask for help after causing problems for themselves.

“Destroying a physical bank, controlled by the Negaverse or not, would be like hunting ghosts and then leaving the city to clean up the mess. Most banks operate electronically and have very little on deposit, and if the Negaverse was hoarding physical money, they would just keep it in their little Negaspace or whatever they call it. I just want to make sure you’ve thought this through. People could get hurt or worse. We could lose any positive reputation we might have. It could be a trap. It could just be a way to test how we respond to whatever they’re doing, otherwise why would they be powered up inside the building? Unless they’re just idiots,” he scoffed.

“How would you even destroy a building? You know the Negaverse probably has people in the FBI. Like I said, this could just be a trap. And it would be decades in prison for whoever was caught and found guilty, and you know the police don’t care who they find as long as someone is blamed.” They could very well be sending innocent people to prison for a very long time for what they did.

Michael didn’t need to look over at Devyn to know how he was feeling about things, so he kept his eyes forward even as he kept his foot against Devyn’s in reassurance - for himself as well.

“How can we help,” he reiterated Devyn’s question. “What do you want us and others to do? Who else is already involved? I can talk to Chris and Paris, but we need to know what’s involved and I’m going to be honest that I’m really concerned that innocent people are going to be hurt if we start destroying property.”

Devyn didn’t have anything to lose if anyone thought he was a terrorist or a gangster. He tapped his fingers on the cup again, but those words meant nothing to him. On Alastor, he’d been called worse. His mantle was completely undesirable. A death sentence at the end of a miserable life, full of war and hatred, and paranoia.

In the short lives of Alastor’s Senshi they typically grew to power, abused it, and died for it.

Things were different for Devyn, but that legacy had carried over to him regardless. No matter how much good he did, everyone was looking for him to make a mistake.

But then, he’d taken the blame for things he hadn’t done, too. He wasn’t looking to win popularity awards here on Earth. They didn’t even know about Senshi and Knights and had to label them some generic, derogatory name just to categorize them as something digestible.

For that, he agreed with Brielle. If someone wanted to give you a bad name, they would. You didn’t have to do anything to deserve it. And, doing something necessary outweighed the repercussions. A sterling reputation wasn’t worth much if you weren’t willing to do all that was necessary to help.

But, he agreed with Michael, too. It wasn’t fair to make a decision that could affect others who might not agree with you. If this were Alastor, if things were how they used to be for him, he could do whatever he needed and take the blame as himself. No one else had to be roped in.

It was complicated, he knew. Not just for who they should be seen as to the people of Destiny City, but as a beacon of what could be better for them if they left the Negaverse. Devyn lacked the experience and history on Earth to know how to best navigate dealing with such things, and he knew his experience on Alastor wasn’t applicable to every situation.

He’d studied Earth things. He did his best. It wasn’t always easy to remember things, and sometimes he got mixed up. But, he tried. And he was in good hands, with people that he’d trust to correct him if he was off base. He pressed his lips together and mulled things over again.

“I trust that you’ll do your research before moving forward with anything,” he insisted, because he did trust that. She had many resources–smart people, reliable people, with a lot of experience, who could help her. And she was doing her own research now–talking to them, listening to them. It was a good sign.

Would the Negaverse be sloppy enough to have uncoded or honest personnel files that might get them identities? What would she do with that information if she had it? Would she break in like a criminal in the night and kill them while they slept? Was that a necessary choice?

He brushed his boot against Michael’s foot as he considered this, and he did what he could to reassure him quietly.

What if they got cocky and left out plans? What if they were just people, high on arrogance and hubris, and made a mistake? Was it worth the risk?

He wasn’t sure. Maybe, if they could guarantee that no innocent person was involved. But then, how many people were working there that had no idea what was going on? There were risks–a lot of them–but he figured that Brielle was serious enough about this to want something good to come of it. She wasn’t going to rush in if she thought innocent people could be hurt–she wanted to stop the Negaverse before they could do that.

“I know you wouldn’t do anything to put anyone in danger, and I know you’re going to do everything you can to make sure you do this right. It’s in the city, right? Is it an old building or new construction? You should try and get blueprints of the area if you can, find any structural weakness. If you can make it look like a structural failure, it might cause less panic. Might risk fewer people getting hurt. Don’t just set a fire, no matter how tempting. If you can.” Sometimes it was necessary, he understood. And fire was the fastest way to get rid of a problem. “Old buildings might have bad pipes, water damage can close a place down. Old boilers, if one of those goes off it can cause a lot of damage. Bad wiring could start a fire without things being too suspicious. I’m sure a Mauvian would have better ideas. New buildings could always just blame rushed construction. The Negaverse would still know it’s you, but you could find ways to make sure the public isn’t blaming you, at least.”

Security systems–cameras, recordings. Those were things he hadn’t had to worry about on Alastor, but he was sure that some Mauvian here would know how to do something against all those technological systems. “If you need extra hands to make sure you get out safe, wecan help with that. If you’re planning some sort of strike, I’m sure there’s a way to make the building unusable without causing any long-term panic.” He didn’t know if that would be enough to chase the Negaverse away or make them abandon whatever goal they were doing, but…

Michael had asked the information he wanted to know–how they could help, and what roles she needed them and others to fill. If it was a trap, it would be good to have backup. If something went wrong, it would be good to have someone there to pull them out of trouble. If the biggest hurdle they needed to overcome was how to minimize the risk to innocent people, that seemed easy enough to work around.

It was worth the effort if she could do something to damage the Negaverse.

"Let me think," said Brielle, because while she was open about the emotions that were leading her to these considerations, she also wasn't going to be reckless about this. A logical strike was better than one that did no harm than good.

"You're right that I'm going to need more than rumors and aura sightings to do something of this scale. That's something I could use help with, I believe. I can only go in asking about too many accounts before I start getting suspicous. I could use a few more faces, if you or any of the others would be up for doing it. Perhaps there's other ways that we can scan for Negaverse activities without getting too close ourselves. I wasn't going to ask anyone to get involved in that because I have the advantage that I can sense auras from a bit farther away, which makes it easier for me to get an idea of if something's going on without getting caught, myself, but-"

It wasn't foolproof, and the information it gave was vague at best. The shrug that Cybele gave to the men beside her, and the tilt of her head, said as much.

"And if we don't find some sort of solid evidence, I won't do anything." It wasn't worth putting Order's reputation at risk, and possibly even people's lives, otherwise.

"Then, if we do go for it, we'll do everything in our power to mitigate the risks. Of course the Negaverse will do everything to turn this against us, with the media especially, but there's got to be some way to make sure they don't have too much to go off of other than perhaps word of mouth. After all, they do it all the time."

How many mysterious gas leaks had there been over the years? Of course Cybele couldn't remember most of them firsthand, but she'd looked through the records.

"There's got to be some sort of way to deal with security cameras," she mused. "Hack them. Disrupt them." She wasn't the best with technology herself, but she was sure someone around had the skills. Mauvians, perhaps. "And with luck, we could do something similar to the digital side of their banking. I know that's probably where they're actually getting their money. I know that vaults are mostly just for show these days. That said, I don't think flooding the building is going to be enough."

Water damage might clear the place out for a month or two, but it could be fixed.

That wasn't enough.

"They can still use the building for other things. Business meetings. Negaverse meetings. Interactions with the public in a controlled setting. Something worse, perhaps. you're right that I don't know, but I still don't think it's good."

Construction records were another thing she'd have to look into, but it looked older from the outside. In her head, she was already spinning a tale about faulty wiring.

Michael felt himself bristle a little. Not necessarily at anything Devyn or Brielle said, but with their confidence in things, he had to wonder if he was being paranoid or overly cautious. Maybe he was once again being too controlling of things, in an attempt to keep people safe, but what if that caused more problems than good?

He shifted uncomfortably and pulled his foot away from Devyn’s, and lowered his eyes to focus on how interesting his coffee cup was.

It sounded like whatever was going to happen would happen no matter what. It was just a matter of when. If he was going to show his face in a location that was expected to have Negaverse officers, he didn’t want to do it without some kind of disguise. He didn’t want the Negaverse going back and remembering who was there and trying to associate them with Knights and Senshi.

The destruction of a building would only cause chaos. The Negaverse would just find a new building, and then what…? They destroy every building until there was nothing left? They needed a better solution, but they didn’t have a lot of time, he knew.

“We’ll do what we can to help get evidence and let you know,” he said, resigned to doing things himself so he knew it was done right. He wasn’t happy about it, but he also didn’t want the Negaverse to continue to spread.
