This one again.” Gremlin’s nasally little hiss was entirely unimpressed as he stared narrowed blue eyes down at the Dark Mirror girl. For all that they were not unfamiliar with each other, the Mauvian had a very particular disdain for the Mirror Rats as a whole, and this girl in particular. The lot of them served absolutely no purpose. ‘Allies’ to Chaos, maybe, but they were just as likely to impede him as any White Moon had ever been, and a senshi aligned with the Court was one that was not aligned with the Negaverse. Waste of resources for a group that didn’t- couldn’t- do anything one way or the other. Just a handful of potential traitors Metallia couldn’t reach enough to influence. Absolutely disgusting. Taking up space and power they didn’t deserve. Human filth.

And to top it off, he’d met Order senshi who’d treated him with respect more befitting of a Mauvian better than most of the Dark Mirror he’d come across!

This One (he wouldn’t even bother to remember her stupid name, despite having come across her several times, at this point) was pretty much bottom of the barrel, as far as Gremlin was concerned, what with her snippy attitude and lack of ******** gratitude when she pretty much could’ve been disposed of and spared all the trouble that came with her.

The tip of his slender, ratty tail twitched as his lip curled at the sight of her. He was perched on the lowest branch of a skinny tree that had been implanted in a grate along the sidewalk. One of probably dozens. Gremlin didn’t know where she was going or what she was doing wandering out alone, but considering the trouble she got into when she was unguarded, he gave a little sneer and demanded, “Stupid or perverted? Must be one, since you either haven’t learned yet not to meander about by yourself, or you get some thrill out of hoping your betters will come save you from any trouble.”

Rakovanite or Vauxite or her filthy Prince. Someone was always there to keep her from getting killed, for whatever that was worth.

Markeb glanced down at Gremlin, lip curled in disdain. As far as she was concerned Mauvian were supposed to be more feline-like. Yet he most definitely looked like the byproduct of an opossum that survived being thrown into a trash fire. Would at least make sense why he seemed to hate the world and everyone on it with an unrivaled passion.

She rolled her eyes, such a disrespectful gesture but far less offensive than what she would have preferred to do instead. I wonder how far he’d fly if I’d kick him like a football… A smirk spread across her face at the thought of him sailing over a building, feet overhead as he writhed in the air, twisting his hairless wrinkled body so that he’d land on his feet. Oh that’d be amusing.

But Vauxite would be very displeased with her and the chain reaction of fury would fall squarely on his shoulders with that General of his breathing down his neck.

“Hmm…” Markeb crossed her arms over her chest and turned her head towards the deeper shadows a few feet beside her where the wraith had been silently following her. “I’d hardly say I’m alone.” True the thing couldn’t fight, and was most fragile in its current state, but it stole energy as skillfully as any agent this rat may have had a hand in training.

“Plus… Unless someone breaks it again-” her gaze snapped back up at Gremlin with a narrowed glare. “I’m never far from an escape route if I need to flee.” Yes, a direct jab at him and his for shattering the one she used for fast travel from home to her private lookout where she could view the stars in peace.

Gremlin’s gaze trailed after hers as the girl glanced off into the shadows. Was someone there? Nothing he could feel. Nothing he could see- Unless he squinted icy blue eyes hard enough at the flickering darkness near the ground to see just the barest shift in shadow. Her wraith. Stupid girl actually had come out with a purpose, no matter how pointless it seemed. And her assertion that she wasn’t alone because of that thing made a bark of laughter erupt from his scraggly-toothed maw.

“It’s definitely no youma,” he snarked. The monsters that served Negaspace were at least more useful in fending off enemies or causing a distraction. Volatile and unmanageable by Gremlin or any of his senshi? …Admittedly, yes, but they were at least companions to those they served. Not like a pitiful nothing that a wraith was. Small and weak and intangible. Easy to break. Offering no warnings to nearby enemies. They really were nothing! And stupid Mirror Girl claimed that she ‘wasn’t alone’ because she had some shadow amalgamation with her.

Gremlin prowled out to the narrowest tip of the branch that would support his weight, and then pounced to the ground, stalking toward the shadows of the alleyway.

“We might as well test and see how companionable it can be to you in the face of any threat,” he sneered. “If your stupid wraith can’t even help against the meager physical powers of a Guardian Cat-” He lunged, paws outstretched and claws extended only to land on empty ground as the wraith evaded him. “It can’t really be said that you’re ‘not alone.’” He passed his tongue across a jagged tooth, tail swaying and hips wiggling as his eyes trailed over the darkness. “I hear it’s a real pain to try and reform them after they’ve been destroyed. And you’ll lose all your hard work…”

He wasn’t fast, thanks to an old injury to his back leg, but he could outsmart some nothing-creature that didn’t have a mind to think for itself. “Might be smart for you to take your little ghosty and run away now, if escape is such an easy thing for you.”

“Don’t you ******** dare!” Markeb had listened to his monologue-long speech with growing skepticism. Since meeting him, Gremlin hadn’t given her much more than an evil eye or look of disdain. A comment spoken with a sneer to his Master while his gaze focused on her.

Disgusting four-legged maggot.

With long steps she moved to intercept him, to stick her leg out in front of his face to keep him from advancing on her dimwitted wraith. “I swear-” her left leg moved to block and instead of swinging through the air it connected with Gremlin’s head. Not hard enough to send him tumbling but no doubt jarring nonetheless.

Refusing to apologize she stood firm and stared him down. “Don’t for one moment think that I won’t go to my Prince and give him your name. I’m certain that the Dark Mirror Court won’t take lightly to one of the Negaverse pets running around destroying our wraiths.” Markeb let the promise hang in the air. Although she was still a Basic Senshi, unable to step into Mirrorspace without someone else there with her, someone stronger than she was; Markeb was well aware of the fragile truce between the two factions.

Hruff-!” She stepped in front of him, and the flat of his nose collided with her shin. In terms of grace, Gremlin was a bit on the lacking side. Most Mauvians would have slunk and dipped out of her way without issue. Most could’ve knocked a nothing-wraith out of existence with ease, if they felt like it. Evading one human was hardly a problem, but his stupid leg made movement and balance more difficult than it had once been. And if Stupid Girl was going to be in his way, the least he could do was make sure she regretted it.

She’d brought herself right before him, directly into his face without a second thought. Gremlin didn’t recoil, launching to hook both his forepaws around her calf and sinking his claws into muscle so she couldn’t escape when he clamped his teeth down into flesh.

He did not give one single s**t about any alleged alliance between their factions. As far as he was concerned, Mirror brats were just competition. They stole senshi from the Negaverse, harvested energy for an entity not Metallia, and didn’t even have any business existing because they provided nothing to this war besides a distraction: an unknown that could be an enemy as much as an ally. Something to get in the way and little else.

He tasted copper, raked his claws down the back of her leg where he was trying to hold himself up to batter her ankle with one back leg. And then, before he could be shaken around too much, his claws retracted, and he bounced away.

“Tattle,” Gremlin spat back at her. “Do it. It is all a worthless thing like you is capable of. Run, run, run, and complain to somebody else to save you. Exactly the s**t I was talking about before.” And maybe Gremlin wouldn’t mind seeing the Rat Prince again. He still deserved a couple swipes himself, having already stolen a senshi right from between Gremlin’s paws before.

Markeb had tried to evade him but proximity be damned she could not pull her leg away quickly enough.

Pain was not immediate as shock superseded any feeling in that first moment. She took a staggered step back but his weight was absolute and one misstep later Markeb found herself on the flat of her back.

A startled scream shattered the otherwise silent area around them as she first tried kicking the feral Mauvian with her other leg. “GET OFF ME YOU ********!” Claws curled into her flesh and sharp teeth sunk in deep. Tears of pain, of hurt, burned her eyes as Markeb struggled to pry Gremlin off her without rending her skin any more than it already was from his ******** bunny kicks to her shin.

For a while now she knew that he was an a*****e, with snarky remarks and pointed comments. Side glances were sharp enough to cut with promised intent that left her looking over her shoulder just to make sure he was still gone and not stalking her from the shadows. But some naive part of her thought that his General, Rakovanite, kept the ratty goblin in check; at the very least having her bother as a part of his team would stay his paw, if not his damn mouth.

Oh, how she was wrong.

“GET OFF!” Markeb yelled again hoping someone might hear her otherwise desperate times were about to lead towards drastic measures as she grabbed hold of Gremlin’s scruff, digging her own nails into his fur-less neck while reaching for a rock, or a stick, to strike him with.

She yanked him by the scruff, pinching her nails into wrinkly skin as Gremlin’s paws were easily lifted from the ground for her to drag him about. And that was just something he had to live with, wasn’t it? Even someone as weak and pathetic as Mirror Brat would have absolutely no problem hauling off a scrawny cat. But he’d always get his swipes in. Gremlin was by no means easy to handle: writhing about in her grip and tearing into anything that even dared to come within an inch of his claws or jowls.

He was proud to have already marked her up, and no matter what she did after that, he’d dealt with worse before. Though he still yowled a particularly feral warning as she reached for something to weaponize against him, and so help her if she dared get close enough to strike him with a rock, he’d take her <******** throat the very first chance he got-

Gremlin! Stop!” The aura of someone else washed over him even before the shout could fully penetrate the sounds of the scuffle, but Gremlin expected an even worse jostling as soon as he felt it.

But he would probably not take Diesel’s throat. Today.

“What are you doing?!” Diesel landed from his teleport perhaps a pace away from them, already in motion to wedge his arms between girl and Mauvian before the situation deteriorated further… if that were possible. As someone who was out most nights, Diesel did routinely patrol with Gremlin by his side, but not always. Sometimes his Mauvian wanted to be left to his own devices, and Diesel was mostly fine with that, though it did mean he had to be constantly alert for anything that might go after a Chaos cat.

He usually expected a youma, to be honest. Or anything Gremlin might pick a fight with. Diesel wasn’t really prepared to see Markeb flattened to the ground, with claw marks ripping up her tights and gloves, pinning a writhing (and unhappy) Guardian to the cement.

A palm closed around the full top of Gremlin’s head, covering his eyes and smashing his ears down as Diesel pretty freaking roughly pried the cat away from the girl, lifted him by the head with all the grace of a toddler swinging around a stuffed animal, and mashed his Mauvian very solidly and very firmly into his chest, catching his paws to keep him from swatting, holding his head to keep him from biting. But there was still a particular softness and concern as Diesel tucked his head low to the crown of Gremlin’s head and asked, “Are you okay?”

And then to the girl, who Diesel offered no assistance to help up to due to the occupancy limit of his hands, “Did he get you pretty bad? I’ve got some water and bandages and hydrogen peroxide in my space pocket. He gets me a lot too.”

“Don’t go being soft on him, he’s the one that started this.” And had Diesel not shown up, she would have finished it too. “He came at me unprovoked, badgering and insulting. He even attempted to destroy my wraith.” Markeb gestured at the opaque monstrosity, so full of recently drained energy, that hovered idly by.

Here she’d gotten bloodied for it and the damn thing couldn’t be moved or bothered enough to protect her in return. Why they had this parasitic relationship with these wraiths was beyond her. In over six years she had yet to determine what benefit they offered the Court.

Anger fueled her, making her knuckles turn why as she held fast onto the jagged rock she all but clawed out of the dirt just as Diesel appeared. “It’s animals that behave like that who get put down.” Because that’s all he’d ever be in her eyes, a feral garbaged welling sewer rat.

Markeb moved to get up and instantly regretted the motion as the adrenaline began to ebb and pain became more prevalent. She drew in a sharp breath through clenched teeth and instead just scooted away from the two least the Mauvian get free and lunged at her again.

Since the incident in the underground subway tunnels, she had barely spoken to anyone on their team. Yes, she met Zaidyn for lunch a couple of times, but with regard to work, she had kept mostly to herself outside of a brief conversation with Rakovanite. The main reason was that Markeb had been trying to find the Corrupt Senshi who had successfully caused the star she’d been given to change another color. A wish had been made and all she wanted to know was what that wish was.

“Can you just- get him out of here and call my brother, please?” She knew that if Diesel were to let go of Gremlin to take care of her leg, the little shithead would seize the opportunity to instigate round two. “He’s probably powered up trying to make amends to your brother for his ******** last month.” After all, their presence in that tunnel was his fault.

“Uh…” While being careful not to offer any sort of leeway between himself and the Guardian firmly in his grasp, Diesel’s gaze wandered quizzically over the scene: over Markeb’s wraith that was apparently in danger of being dusted-? Destroyed- by Gremlin. And then down to the girl herself, looking a bit battered for sure, but just a scant moment away from weilding a weapon that could probably bludgeon a cat to death. “Uh huh… So, like…”

Diesel could see with his own eyes that there’d been more than just “badgering” going on. She was bloodied, and Gremlin was scuffed up and still struggling in the corrupt’s arms, hissing out particularly unattractive cat noises and little spits of displeasure.

But Gremlin still had just cat strength like this. Diesel was sure he could ******** someone up real good, taking his claws to anything vital, but y’know, throat and eyes were kind of hard to reach from the ground. He’d clawed up her legs, sure. But he wasn’t very fast, wasn’t very strong, couldn’t jump very high because of some old poorly-healed injury. He could hurt her, but he couldn’t really… do much else.

“You were going to kill him because he insulted you?” Diesel’s expression twisted into a morph of a grimace and confusion.

Of course there was some understanding of her situation! His Mauvian could be incredibly hateful, cruel, venomous. Diesel didn’t think anyone had ever spoken to him with the malice that Gremlin did. But it was somehow still his Mauvian. His cat. His Bond, for whatever it was worth. And it was definitely people who talked down to him and hurt him and treated him like trash that made Gremlin act this way.

Diesel didn’t relent enough that Gremlin could escape, but he cradled the grouchy goblin very fully (and securely: he didn’t want his face scratched off, either) in his arms.

“Can’t really blame you for what I suspect is an adrenaline-fueled fight response, but like, you should probably consider yourself the lucky one I showed up. I’ve only met… two of you Mirror guys, like, ever, and I don’t really get the vibe that I should be particularly threatened. But I have a little of this expectation that if you killed one of the Negaverse’s Mauvians, even a shitty one like this-“ Gremlin’s tail snapped aggressively. “-it’d be a helluva bad look, right? I’m not really intimidated by the Mirror Court, but I don’t know anyone with the Negaverse who’s not, uh. Dangerous. At a minimum. Cruel at worst.” She thought Rakovanite was pissed at Vauxite for his ********? Imagine how he’d feel if his team’s cat was dead.

He gave a little roll of his shoulders. “Not trying to threaten you or whatever. I’m just saying. No one can corrupt you or anything, so that’d just leave, like, the two worse options.”

When Diesel picked his hand away from Gremlin’s face, the Guardian immediately whipped his head around to shoot an angry, teeth-fully-exposed hiss in Markeb’s direction, but the senshi just manhandled him into a bundle under his arm, reached into his space pocket, and produced a water bottle and a spool of gauze.

“Here,” he tossed them her way, but didn’t draw any closer. “I’ll call Vauxite to make sure you get home okay.”

No, I was going to kill him because he was trying to shred my leg with his claws and was biting me… she mentally spat back at him.

Rather than reeling back in surprise, Markeb returned Gremlin’s hateful hiss with an equally venomous glare. Almost begrudgingly she took the bandages but made no move to tend to her wounds, not yet anyway since she was feeling less inclined to take her eyes off the flesh-colored raisin.

Should have known Diesel would take his side, at the end of the day it’s a he-said she-said and when it came to having friends, Markeb was sadly on the losing side of things. Remarque may or may not believe her and Vauxite… who knew with him these days. Wouldn’t surprise her if he sided with his new family.

“You just stay the hell away from me.” Faction alliance or truce be damned, if Gremlin attacked her again like he had tonight- … At best he may find himself thrown into Mirrorspace for a spell, at worst- well for as much as she hated animal cruelty, this Mauvian may become her first and only exception especially when he behaves no better than a Youma.

Whatever hope she had of making friends with Diesel was likely trashed in that moment, didn’t matter. She’d already gotten this far on little more than a casual conversation once every other year from her own court. Becoming a part of her brother’s team may as well just remain a hopeless wish, one to dream about but just give up on pursuing.

Diesel had to roll his eyes at this one, because, like, what else was there to even do? Gremlin hated everyone, and he'd honestly gotten pretty lucky with not having to deal with people who hated him back. Most were above sinking to one feisty Guardian's level- especially when that level was literally in a filthy sewage drain. But Mauvians were supposed to be more intelligent than the average human, so Diesel couldn't exactly be offended by someone treating him with all the animosity he gave: he was supposed to be more than just a senseless base creature.

Gremlin's tail whipwhipwhipped pretty hard into Diesel's side, progressively more frustrated as the girl snapped back at him, and his senshi's lack of willingness to do something about her. Blow her head off. Or at least burn off her face. Send her home limping. Something. "She kicked me in the head before I ever laid a claw on her or or stupid shadow," Gremlin seethed.

"Man, come on," Diesel groused, exasperated, as he tucked an arm more securely around Gremlin's middle, since he'd need his other hand pretty fully if he wanted to type out any message to Vauxite. "Both of you are being kinda shitty and petty and bringin' other people into all this nonsense like there's not enough to deal with." Because Diesel should be draining, patrolling for the enemy. Gremlin should be seeking out new recruits. Markeb should be- well, Diesel didn't know exactly what she 'should' be doing, but he bet she better be watching her back in case some gung-ho Order b***h came around hunting whatever Chaos it could find in the night.

Whatever fight was between the two of the was totally bizarre and exhausting.

He glanced up to the street sign so he could type in a pretty exact location for Vauxite to come to. Didn't know how long it would take, since he couldn't teleport here, but that wasn't really Diesel's problem. Tablet was kind hard to manage one-handed, but it still only took a minute to have his teammate's contact pulled up and a message typed out: 'Hey, your sister got in a fight with my cat. She's waiting on the sidewalk close to the corner of Duchess and Larkspur. There's a Starbucks across the street, if you need help finding it. Me and the cat aren't hanging around for obvious reasons, so chop chop and get over here before someone else senses her first.'

He flicked the screen closed, dropped the pen-like device in subspace, and then wrangled Gremlin into a grip with both his arms once more. "Think he'll be here quick," Diesel said to Markeb. "Threw in a little threat of danger to make it urgent, keep it interesting, y'know, that kind of thing."

"We'll be off, so... yeah. Stay outta trouble 'til Vaux comes around. If you can help it." With a little pulse of energy that seemed to snatch him out of the air, both Diesel and Gremlin were gone from the sidewalk, with no signs of any aura close by.
