Stirling was pacing in a small circle as she waited for Casablanca to show up, of course the text that she had sent Cara was terribly cryptic, and honestly might cause her friend to panic, but it was the only thing she could think of to say.
Quote: Help! It won’t work! Please come in your most fancy clothes to figure this out with me? :staremoji: :staremoji:
It was straightforward but…cryptic…and it wouldn't have been good to just be like, come as Casablanca my magic as Stirling didn’t work and I want to see if it works with you or not….because who knew if someone was bugging the phones, reading people’s text messages…talking in code was the only safe thing to do…that or sending a letter by magic but…bah.
Her pacing continued, though she kept her senses alert for anyone who might be nearby, friend or foe…but. Hopefully it would just be Casablanca.

Brooklyn's text did indeed make Cara feel a jolt of worry, and had her running out the door before she'd even thought to power up. She'd gotten halfway to the meeting place before it even occurred to her to call on the power of Casablanca, and only then because one: Brooklyn had asked, and two: it would get her there faster.
When she arrived, she practically skidded to a halt, panting a little from the exertion of running the whole way.
"What's wrong?" She asked, looking Stirling up and down to see if she had any obvious injuries. "What's not working?"

“I didn’t mean to freak you out so much, are you okay? My magic is broken. It’s worked two times really well and like, I make a shield and it keeps people away but then I sparred with this really nice guy to show off and it didn’t work. It didn’t stop him and he just FWOOP!” Stirling shook her head, raising her hands to try and illustrate what had happened.
“He came right through! My magic is broken.”
She summoned her dagger and waved it, looking hopelessly at her friend and then she concentrated for a moment, taking a few steps backwards and summoning her shield. “Come at me, see if it works? It’s protected me before but…I just. Please? Try to hit me!”

Casablanca let out a relieved breath. Okay, that was...that was better. At least Stirling wasn't in danger at this specific moment.
But, uh. That was also sort of worrying.
"Okay, yeah,t hat does sound pretty bad, but maybe we can figure it out together." Like they'd figured out what Casablanca's magic really did! They'd jsut have to see what happened when Casablanca swung her staff--with care--at the shield Stirling put up.
It passed right through, and Casablanca stopped it short of actually hitting her friend.
".....Oh. That's not good."

“Oh my God. I’m a defective Knight! I’m broken! I’m going to get replaced by a newer model!”
Stirling swallowed, but her eyes were wide and just a little crazed. She did have abandonment issues, even if she buried them down deep enough that she couldn’t find them. Being replaced. Being obsolete was something that truly frightened her. “I just wanted to help protect my Princess, I want her to be proud of me, and now she’ll just…get another Knight instead, one who doesn’t have magic that people can just walk right through...and Dagon won’t want me, I’m useless! I’m…I’m honest to goodness useless.”
For a moment, she simply stood there as the shield pulsed slightly and then vanished, and then Stirling promptly burst into tears.

Oh. Oh no. Oh, poor Stirling, they'd been able to diagnose what happened with Casablanca's magic so quickly, but this seemed....like a different sort of problem. And it was one Casablanca wasn't sure how to approach. Sure, they could go throguh scenarios, figure things out, but the more important thing was...
"No, no, no, Stirling, you're not defective," she reached out to gently put her hands on her friend's shoulders. "No one's going to replace you. I bet there's just some weird quirk with your magic--has it ever like, not worked when you were fighting someone actually dangerous?" That seemed like the easiest and most important question to answer!
"It'll be okay, we'll figure it out. You're definitely not broken or useless. And if anybody tries to throw you away, I'll punch them, okay? Because they're wrong."

Sniffing loudly, Stirling shook her head, unable to really process what her friend was saying, and she drew away sharply from the touch, not willing to let her get any closer. One day she’d see that Stirling wasn’t worth having around too…one day…just. One day.
Stifling a sob, the Squire turned on her heel and let her powered form fade, breaking into a run and making sure that she didn’t follow any discernible trail. Comfort was the very last thing that she needed right now, but…she didn’t know what it was that she did need…so the best thing to do was to go back to the dorm and sleep…and find some rando to try her powers on tomorrow…see if that helped at all…
If not?
Well if not, then it was time to go and talk to Talia and tell her the bad news…

Casablanca gasped like she'd been hit when Stirling jerked away. No, no, this wasn't how it was supposed to go, she was supposed to be able to help her friend, that was what she was good at, she was only a so-so Knight on her own but she could be Stirling's friend, and help her, and get better with some encouragement--
"Stirling, wait--" She started to call, and she moved to run after the other girl, but she froze, suddenly seized by indecision. Would ti even help? Stirling had rejected her assistance, and maybe she just....wasn't ready to talk. Maybe she had to cry it out first. That made a lot of sense. Sometimes you have to have all your big, messy feelings before you could think about solutions!! Maybe she just had to let Stirling be dramatic first!!
Yeah, okay, that sounded reasonable. And totally not at all like an excise to let her friend leave.
....God, Casablanca was a s**t friend. But maybe if, next time they met, she had some ideas for how to fix Stirling's magic, that would make up for it.
