Occurs on the 23rd after these events.

Tama had teleported. Yet he did not have control over it. Not yet. Especially not in the emotional state he was in…

Which was what, exactly?

Tama didn’t know. All he knew was that he had to get away from here. Get away from their failure. Get away from watching a man turn into a monster.

And, yet, here he was. In front of that man’s office. His magic had chosen the place, not the cat. First time use of such things tended to go that way. Not as you planned. Never how you expected.

Of all the places in hell…

This was the last place he wanted to be. But he walked in the door all the same. It was the third time he had come here uninvited. The first time, mere days after he had been corrupted, he had punched Faustite. The second time, after he regained memories from his life before the Negaverse, he had stabbed Faustite. This third time… there was no one there.

But Faustite was gone. He had vanished. If he would have returned anywhere, it would be here, right?

Faustite must really be gone.

But, if he were here, what would Tama have done? Hit him again.

Except… maybe that wasn’t would he would have done this time.

“You’re not even here, you b*****d!” Tama kicked the desk, but his bare feet was nothing to it; it was not at all like when Albite kicked it. “You left us!”

Tama yelled to the nothingness. An empty office for a general who didn’t exist. Was nothing now, but a stain on his memories.

“Maybe it’s for the best you’re not here.” His voice was low, the echo of his pounding the burnt wood of the desk a lingering sound. “For the best you can’t see me like this.”

There were tears falling down his face now. Uncontrolled, violent tears. As if every emotion he had been holding in since the day he told them his fate was now pouring out like a broken dam.

“Probably better you never saw me cry for you.”

He slipped down on the ground, leaning against the desk. He couldn’t even bring himself to lay on it. Almost as if he’d desecrate it if he did so now.

“Why’d you have to go like that? Right when I was starting to give a damn about you. You know, when I made this stupid collar…” He ripped it from his neck and threw it across the room as far as his meager strength could manage. “… all I could think after I created it was running in here and showing you. Like a ******** kid looking for praise from you for a job well-done. How messed up is that? I couldn’t even find a way to save you, but I was still proud of what I did make. What I had the power to do. What little I had the power to do.”

He started to sob.

“God. I wanted so bad to be ******** useful to you, I didn’t even stop to think why. Why the hell was I doing this for you? What did you even mean to me, anyway? I hated you.”

His nails dug into his palms.

“And I wanted anything to keep hating you. If I hated you, I’d never have to accept what you did to me. I would never have to belong in the Negaverse. I would never have to have a home and all the burdens that came with it. I could stay unfeeling. I didn’t have to care.”

He punched a hole in the wall.

“But I do care! I ******** care! I care about you! And now you’re gone…”

Tama felt a pain in his hand and only now looked down at it. He was bleeding. Was it his own claws or the number he had done on Faustite’s office.

He got up and headed to the infirmary. Hopefully, the lieutenant who threatened to muzzle him the next time he showed up for care wasn’t there…

—*—

The Mauvian’s hand was bandaged up, but he had indeed broken his knuckle. Why the bloody hell was he so fragile even in his humanoid form? Useless.

And that’s when he received the message.

Tama could not believe what he was reading. Faustite was alive!

He did not know how long he stayed with that thought. Minutes. Hours. Days. Perhaps it was whatever drugs they had given him for his self-inflicted injury, but he’d lost all sense of time.

Until he felt a powerful aura. It was very close. Could it be?

“Where is he?” Tama came, uninvited, into the room of the infirmary where he felt the signature most. “Where is Faustite?”

Over the past several months, a few of the medical staff had come to know Faustite better than they had ever expected. They learned how little he knew of medical procedures and biology, for example, just as they learned that he often tried to ignore whatever afflicted him. The ones that encountered him most often learned that he had a surprising number of husbands, as well as a diverse team that somehow found the pubescent fire demon of a General to be someone worth caring about, even to the ends of 'found family'. It was for that reason, once the nurse was stopped and asked by a Mauvian with a bandaged hand, that she thought to answer Tama directly.

Yes, she knew about HIPAA. She was trained in it before she ever joined the Negaverse. But many of their agents and senshi and Mauvians were family to one another, so who was she to tell Tama no when he and Faustite were part of the same team?

"Third door on your right," she said, and pointed in the direction that Tama should go. Then she returned to prepping for her next patient.

It had taken some negotiation before the infirmary had found some way to get Faustite comfortable without setting everything on fire. He regrettably had to refuse a cannula, taking extra time out of his crispy state to yell at the nurse about how one shouldn't mix pure oxygen with fire. Then there was the matter of painkillers denaturing as soon as they'd gone into his blood, a whole lot of complaints about metal gurneys being uncomfortable and better suited to corpses, and much of the staff had bemoaned how the room was much too hot, and how they needed to install an air conditioning unit before anyone could spend a considerable amount of time in the room with Faustite.

But, between Faustite's cincher and a good deal of human ingenuity, he had gotten the painkillers he wanted and the room's temperature was lowered to a balmy 82 degrees Fahrenheit. By the time Tama was directed toward the proper room, the workhorse of a window unit had gotten it down to 81 degrees.

Faustite was terribly close to being claimed by sleep when he heard someone shuffle into his room. He sighed, then coughed for how his lungs so protested their use. "Told you to ******** off," he rasped wearily. While he faced away from the door, Faustite rolled onto his back to glare at his trespasser, only to find that it was —

"Tama."

When he wasn’t complaining about pain, he was demanding to know things from every nurse in sight. It was a wonder why anyone let Tama into the infirmary with the amount of noise he made when he was there. It would be honestly surprising if they just didn’t send him to the vet the next time.

Especially when he barged into Faustite’s room with even less grace than usual.

In fact, for being as cat-like as he was, he had nearly no composure at all.

Tama had practically bursted through the door. If he had any strength at all, he would have thrown it into the wall, but he didn’t even have that. And, yet, when he finally got into the room, he didn’t move. Didn’t even say anything. He just stared at Faustite in the bed.

He gripped his fist like he was going to punch something.

“Faustite.”

Faustite sat up, though it was a struggle to do so. His coat was long since removed, leaving him in a simple black tank that exposed the myriad bandages rolled over his arms and shoulders. When he looked at his feline visitor, he wore familiar signs of exhaustion, though they did not look as bleak as before.

His attention shifted to Tama's fist, which looked like it had been recently treated. Did you punch a nurse? He wanted to ask, half-expecting the spitfire Mau's answer to be yes. He wasn't quite able to place why Tama would punch a nurse, however; he was caught between doing it because the nurses worked to keep Faustite alive, or because they didn't let him die like he deserved. It was a mystery, as the cat's motives shifted with the wind, which Faustite had long learned was a very feline attribute.

"You look like a damned mess," he observed before slouching back into bed. He could pick on Tama all he wanted, but couldn't deny that it was relieving to see him in the room, no matter how frazzled. He was one of the more sensible (sometimes) than his more volatile teammates. But Tama could himself be volatile; today could be the day that the mercurial Mauvian tried to stab him again.

But at this point, it was a welcome change of pace from all the laying around while doing as little as possible. "If you're here to try assassinating me, best get it over with."

Tama stared at Faustite for a while, as if analyzing him. He just stared, without a hint of emotion, like he was looking for something.

He was looking for Faustite, but not in body alone.

He’d started with a <******** off. That was promising. And he still had that cincher which meant the fire youma was probably still there and a part of him. But maybe he just liked wearing it? He did kind of look good in it. He’d recognized Tama. But, I mean, who wouldn’t? The Mauvian was not that hard to recognize. He looked exhausted. But then again, who in here didn’t? This was a goddamned hospital even if it was run by the Negaverse. He still noticed things that stood out, like his hand. So he knew that wasn’t there before, indicating more than a passing knowledge of the cat.

But the key was the last thing Faustite said. No one but Faustite, whole in body and mind, would say that. Only two people knew that Tama had once tried to stab the man (the other being Albite who probably didn’t have a very long memory). With the rather balmy heat of the room and the man’s assasination comment, he knew this was indeed Faustite and not just a part of him they’d managed to salvage.

All of him.

“You’re alive!”

If Faustite thought the Mauvian had no composure before, it seemed Tama was here to prove just how much lack there of he could have when he got emotional. He ran up to Faustite and hugged him. A full on tackle hug.

And then, approximately three seconds into one embarrassment, his lavender collar decided it was time to do its own thing.

With a tinge of magic, there was no longer a cat-boy hugging Faustite, but a rather large cat. A cat so big that it# back paws still reached the floor and its very large and fluffy body was a sudden weight on Faustite’s chest.

“…”

Faustite had expected some kind of aloofness — a blatant cold shoulder, or some muted refusal to do or say more than the bare minimum to him — so the cat flinging himself at him came as surprise and shock enough that he startled for it.

"Will you stop ******** trying to murder me?" Faustite protested while he fought against his instinct to recoil. Tama wasn't that heavy, or he shouldn't be normally, but trying not to burn him while also trying to decide what to do with the sudden display of affection only got worse when Tama balooned to three times his normal size. Faustite let out a yelp as his burns were suddenly crushed under the weight of Horsecat, whereupon he frantically patted the cat's forearms. "Up, up!" Came his muffled insistence, buried under the ******** hell." He coughed and spat, having inhaled some of Tama's regal fluff. Once he'd pushed the puffs aside, he asked, "When the ******** did you learn to do that?"

And how did Tama turn it off? He wasn't about having a feline-shaped steed in his damned infirmary bed. He'd expect rumors to circulate about that.

"Won't stay alive if you keep smothering me!"

“Damn it! I thought I finally fixed that.”

Tama tried to maneuver his newfound bulk off of Faustite as best he could, but he was clearly not very good at moving when his front paws were on one side of Faustite and his back paws were on the other. With a bit of ungraceful flailing, he managed to turn over and flop off the bed with a thump. There was a smell of burnt fur in the air in addition to the infirmary’s antiseptic scent.

“I wasn’t trying to murder you. I wouldn’t smother you. I’d definitely try and stab you again, but with a better blade this time.”

He immediately started to brush the cinders off his stomach with his paws.

“Meanwhile, you’re always trying to singe my fur. You’d think they’d have fixed that by now with you being a general-king and all. Well, at least that confirms you’re still part youma. Seems they didn’t have to remove that part, after all.”

After looking depressingly over his ruined tummy fluff, he sighed.

“Well, I suppose if I’m going to share that story, you’ll need to share the story of how you became a general-king in exchange.”

With the enormous furbag off of him, Faustite was able to rise and dust some of the stray puffs off before they, too, caught fire. Undoubtedly, if it got more out of hand, the fire alarms would go off and the nurses would come running to chastise them both for horsing around (which may be fitting, considering that Tama looked the size of a horse for the moment). And it brought to mind another question — Tama seemed aware of this transformation, even involved in it himself, so what the hell was it and what was it intended for? Was he actually going paw-to-paw with people like that? Or did it serve some other function?

"Why are you…" His hand spun in the air, looking for a word while he sat up. "Big?" He paused, then added, "Never mind. I'll start first." Tama might forget any questions he may have during the retelling of his own adventures, which meant less for Faustite to have to answer.

"You remember how the operation failed — left for the Rift after. Started burning to death along the way. Some of our allies followed me, carried me there. Got as far as the entrance." He paused, coughed into his sleeve. Hardly any smoke came from it, but his throat was still laden with uncharacteristic gravel.

"Was told I crystallized. That the crystal turned black and fell away after a time, and I was promoted by then. Can only remember being in more pain than I can describe. Queen came down, sent me up to the infirmary for all the burns. Got the announcement after I got here.

"Guessing it took more energy than usual to fix what was wrong with me, too. Might be why it came at such a dire time. Will have to ask Axinite about it," he finished with a perplexed sigh and a tapering cough.

"Your turn, cat. Why big?"

“Oh, I quite remember how that operation failed! I’ve never seen a bigger ******** in all nine of my lives. You really need to learn to disciple your subordinates, you know.”

He sat on the ground and sighed, but his head was still in line with the bed as he looked Faustite over properly.

“By the looks of it, you burned to death at least once and you don’t have quite as many lives.” He wasn’t sure he’d seen Faustite his way before. He’d seen him at his worst — physically, anyway. Before he’d teleported away, Tama was certain he was looking death in the eyes. “Well, of course you’d go to the Rift, of all the damned places and I’m sure all of your husbands with a death wish were happy to follow you there.”

Tama had been quite foolish to think Faustite would be in his office. It made no logical sense to go there. Not if you thought you’d be very shortly turning into a youma.

“Crystallized? And you ‘guess’ it took more energy than usual to ‘fix’ you? Why did I think I was going to get any explanation about your promotion but the bear minimum?”

Tama rolled his eyes.

“Well, I suppose that counts as an explanation, albeit a piss-poor one. As for me, I maybe, sort-of, kinda… went to the Transverse Workshop to run some experiments to find a way to save your sorry a**.”

Sighing, Faustite rolled his eyes. Got promoted, and he's already being reprimanded by a cat. By his cat, no less — the sassy one who hadn't bonded with anybody. Figures it would be Tama, and Faustite supposed he'd be nagged to the point that he started disciplining his team and enforcing more structure.

But it wasn't like the Negaverse had a boot camp regimen. And they did follow orders when it counted.

"There were…" He paused as he counted. "All of them. Plus Kama. But Jet and Aquamarine were there, too, so their death wishes were unfounded." Not that he thought Jet and Aquamarine's absence would have altered what his boys would have done; he imagined that, at least for Albite, the thought of going down to the Rift to watch his husband turn into a youma and therefore devour him would have been a fitting end and an exciting event to attend. Perhaps a lesser extent for Alkmene, Heliodor would have gone all in with his self-loathing tendencies, and… Well, no, Taenite wouldn't have stuck around for that. He had self-preservation.

"Now I'm stuck here 'til all this heals." He inspected his own arm, using a claw to push aside a bandage and get a peek at the damage. "Told it'll be a while." Which was, he supposed, his only buffer between now and responsibilities.

He shot the furball a lidded look. "Should've asked the Queen if you wanted more than the bare minimum. Or someone else who had a better view of the crystal. You ask Albite? He was ******** there."

But the conversation took a nose dive when Tama fessed up to why he had that cursed little hiccup where he turned into a damned horse-sized cat. "For piss-poor explanations, yours is worse. Why the ******** did you go there? We don't know enough about that s**t to go ******** around with it. Did one of the researchers talk you into this? Was it Borax? Knew I should've made him a youma…"

“Do not put it past me to just go ask Albite.” The large cat looked at the man sheepishly, his expression extra pronounced due to his size. “I am not above summoning one or your husbands to get my tea.”

Well, he’s both making quips and noticing what I’m trying to not say. For looking half-dead, the boy king is quite astute.

Tama gave a rather large sigh between elongated fangs.

“Well, since you are going to be here for awhile…” And you’ve noticed the elephant-size cat in the room. “I suppose I do have to tell you. Wouldn’t be worth lying to a general-king anyway. Just remember that you’re injured and attempting to fry me at this stage probably isn’t good for your health.”

Tama had a bad habit of asking for forgiveness later than ever asking permission.

“As previously stated, I was trying to find a way to help you. Or, at the very least, the youma part of you.” He began. “Hence the unfortunate location. I won’t let someone else take the blame for going into the Rift when it was my idea. Although you happen to know an inordinate amount of boys willing to do so.”

It was surprising how easy it was for a cat to get into the Rift and out alive when there were so many willing to take him.

“The plan was to purify you and, as you well know, that meant purging the youma part of you. I entered the Transverse Workshop with the intention of finding a way to preserve that which would be purged. So I went there and commanded a youma to participate in my experiments. If I dusted a youma in that crucible I thought I might be able to find a way to capture its essence before it dissolved and returned to the Rift. And, if I could do that, then maybe there would be a part of the youma you would leave behind when you purified that I could capture and return to you.”

He looked away. What was that expression?

“A knight once told me that starseeds always hold part of what they used to be within them, even if they cannot access that part of themselves. I thought that, even if purified and recorrupted, I could use the essence of the youma that was once part of you to make you whole again. But when I dusted that youma, there was nothing left in the crucible’s cauldron. There was no way I could capture any of that fire and return it to you. It would either return to the Rift and be unfindable or it would perish altogether.”

He couldn't stop a chuckle at that one, then groaned for how many layers of his body protested it. He could imagine it, of course — Tama telling Albite over the communicator to bring him some tea. Maybe Tama was teaching Haymitch about some cat thing they did, and Tama needed refreshments. He knew Albite would do it, too, gladly, with a smile on his face as he served the cats the most sloppily prepared tea that they'd ever drunk. And Faustite would never have heard about it, either, else he would shame Albite a thousand times over for improper tea preparation.

Faustite settled back against the pillows, which presented a different kind of pain, but one that was more muted and tolerable. He pressed his knuckles to his temple while he listened to the story.

The smile fell from his face rather quickly. So Tama found a boy to take him into the Rift (and Faustite had gotten stuck on wondering who it was for an inordinate amount of time). Then Tama found a youma who accepted his command, ostensibly with one of those broken weapons from inside the Transverse Workshop. Faustite wouldn't have put it past the cat to use the same one with which he tried to stab Faustite, either.

The hypothesis was a curious one — finding out if there was something left in the remaining dust of a youma was never attempted before, to his knowledge, nor did he think to go investigating it. In a normal circumstance, dusting meant the youma (and its starseed) returned to the Rift to regenerate its body. Perhaps that was a close mimic of purifying a half-youma, if their youma side left something behind. Faustite didn't know, but he was glad he hadn't found out for himself. Especially since Tama's experiment was nothing short of a failure.

"Surprised you'd want me to remember anything," he half-teased. "Might've been easier for you if I didn't remember all the times you tried to punch, or claw, or demean me." But he wondered, too, if Tama would've been more distant? If they wouldn't have had… Whatever this was. Cats were complicated; their rapport more so.

After a pause, he added, "Suspect there would've been nothing left. Isn't a youma that could live on its own. More like…" He didn't really know how to explain it. "Part of me that just changed." The explanation felt unsatisfactory, but he wasn't certain how else to explain that his youma half wasn't a separate entity.

“I didn’t want you to forget!”

Tama said in a sudden outburst that seemed to surprise even himself. He bit his cheek and looked away. Why did he even care, anyway? Faustite was right. It would be better if he hadn’t remembered. Better for the Mauvian.

When had he started caring about what was better for Faustite and not just himself?

“Maybe I didn’t want that part of you to go away.”

Tama fiddled with his collar.

“Well, it’s not like I didn’t get anything out of that misadventure.” He said selfishly. Or was he just trying to hide his former concern? “I’d been trying to work with form changes for quite a while. Mauvians are shapechangers at heart, after all. Thought if youma could change their shape with that device, surely a Mauvian could learn something from it. Yes. I’m admitting to learning from youma. You can ridicule me later.”

Faustite's brows lofted. "Oh," he proclaimed knowingly. Wasn't that something? The cat who wanted to beat his face in for reasons unremembered now wanted Faustite to keep his memories — even the ones that didn't paint Tama in a favorable light. Sounded a whole lot more like care from a Mauvian that normally projected opportunism. When, then, did Tama start to give a s**t?

And when did he give enough of a s**t to put himself in imminent mortal danger for someone with whom he normally traded barbs? The Rift didn't take lightly to cats; Faustite thought the little furbags actually had it worse than senshi, who were unanimously derided and reviled in there. That anyone safely took him to the Transverse Workshop, which wasn't a terribly short walk, and got him back out without either of them being mauled to death spoke of a great deal of skill and respect. He'd have liked to know which boy it was, if so many boys were so willing to take Tama into the Rift for Faustite's sake.

But as Tama went on, Faustite was taken aback. He stared at the cat with a look of pure consternation. "Why the ******** would I ridicule you later when I can do it now? Finally the condescending, furry little goblin learns an ounce of humility." At least enough to recognize that the youma he so disparaged have some genuine benefit, in that they taught him something worthwhile.

Well — presumably worthwhile. Faustite couldn't see an oversized Mauvian as anything but trouble for himself, and perhaps nightmare fuel for others. Maybe it had uses, though.

Still, Tama tried to do something for Faustite's benefit and the Rift rewarded him with some measure of personal gain. Faustite could be thankful for that. "Appreciate it, though. Looking out for what I remember. Might have to get you working on a mind wipe device, though, see if it'll get me out of desk jobs if I have no short-term memory left."

“I was giving you an out since you are clearly bedridden. But if you insist...” He rolled his eyes as if seeing how far back into his enlarged skull they could go before clearing his throat.

“The ‘condescending, furry little goblin’ hereby recognizes the usefulness of youma, even if most of them still want to eat said furry goblin. The aforementioned has thus acquired an ounce of humility, though he assures that he does not know of it. I can get that on letterhead, if you prefer.”

Tama grinned, but it looked all too strange as his canines were much larger than they should be.

“And I appreciate your appreciation. I’ll take that as a ‘thank you’.”
