He always went in with his bell ready in his hand and at least one song ready on his tongue. He always lived his “what if real life were a musical, what if more people sang about their feelings more often” fantasy a little bit while meandering. And eventually, he always went back to the real world, where he belonged.
Tonight, the name of the game had been trying to sing both parts of “Light My Candle” from Rent (because were you really singing “Light My Candle” if you didn’t at least try to sing for both Roger and Mimi? No, Reiki did not think so). Hadn’t entirely succeeded in breaking up the endless same-ness of everything, but it had amused Reiki enough that he didn’t leave Mirrorspace feeling completely godawful.
Wherever Mirrorspace had let Reiki out, the neighborhood looked nice enough. At least, it did when Reiki emerged from yet another of Remarque’s stashed-away mirrors, in yet another nondescript alley that could’ve been identical twins with every other nondescript alley in Destiny City. A park nearby looked like a promising place to patrol……at least until Reiki noticed that it was less a “park” and more of a cemetery. Going in there to patrol felt about as disrespectful as going in there to play Pokémon Go: sure, someone in town might have decided that this or that statue somewhere in the graveyard deserved to be a Poké-Stop, but that didn’t give anyone the right to disturb and disrespect the dead by stomping through the cemetery literally just to swipe their finger across their phone—or, worse, to interrupt the living while they grieved.
He was turning on his heel, ready to find his way back home, when Reiki felt it: a White Moon aura, probably someone close to his level……seemingly coming from inside the cemetery. …That simply wouldn’t do. Whether they were some twelve-year-old with delusions of grandeur who needed a disciplinary tap and to get sent on their way, or someone who maybe needed help, Reiki couldn’t leave them there alone. (Well……he could have, he guessed, but he wouldn’t have felt good about it.)
Following the aura, he tried to stay quiet, respectful, as if there were anyone else here besides him and the White Moon agent he was looking for. Fortunately, he found her quickly: high ponytail of lightish brown, an actual feline tail behind her, a bigger bow in the back than he remembered but who was he to judge, and………oh.
Oh, ******** up behind her—even if it had been a simple accident of which direction he’d come from—probably wasn’t going to seem like he was on-the-level. ******** ******** ******** Reiki had just unwittingly signed himself up to get kicked again, only this time for the crime of “trying to help” and “having a Chaos aura and bad luck”…… Okay, but that hadn’t happened yet. Maybe it still wouldn’t. In the hopes of avoiding any violence, Reiki folded his hands together out in front of him, where the other senshi could, if she glanced his way, hopefully see that he wasn’t trying anything nefarious with them.
“…Daphne?” He kept his voice gentle, and hopefully non-threatening. If she was out here alone, and sitting by a very nice-looking memorial, then……it wasn’t what he’d expected to find, but…it was the least Reiki could do, trying not to hurt her and to show that he came in peace. “…I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude or anything? I just…I felt your aura and I thought somebody might’ve needed help.”
