Still February 19, 2023Despite Niter's eagerness to see the promised plant life, Hestia patiently finished her tea and then packed up travel mugs and a wax bag of handmade cookies to take with them. "You need to be prepared," she explained solemnly, like a warm drink was the equivalent of keeping rope and signal flares on hand. When they finally got going, she led Niter back outside and toward the most massive building in sight. Along the way, they passed by more of the bobbing spheres of fire until they reached three huge basins with a much larger ball of flame above two of them. Pointing to the smallest, Hestia said, "That one is mine, it represents me, the World Keeper. The next represents Mars, I think this world was um... under it's jurisdiction or something like that? But nobody attached to Mars has visited, so it doesn't have a flame lit. The next one, the biggest, represents the All Flame. It's supposed to represent everyone everywhere, but it's a lot smaller now than the one from memory." Turning to Niter, she asked, even more solemn now, "Before you leave, would you light a fire here? I'll take good care of it."

While Niter's excitement was dampened by the small scolding, he did what was asked of him and finished off his tea in quietude. It had put him in a contemplative mood, he noticed, though without the ubiquitous anxieties that came from examining his own life. He had plenty to look over — plenty to think about — while she finished her own tea.
His living situation, for example. His inability to make rent consistently.
Then they were off, and Niter was thankful for that. He wasn't a huge fan of being in such a sterile room; he felt like he was contaminating it by existing. But out in the open? He didn't think dirt could get dirtier, or that he would make much of a mess out there.
The weirdest part of the trip were the floating fireballs. Niter didn't know if they were actually contained, and if they were, then how was the fire getting enough fuel and oxygen to survive? It had occurred to him that it could be magical fire, maybe something illusory like other senshi magic, but it wasn't going away like senshi magic did. And she was talking like the big fire had been around for an extremely long time.
Niter supposed that, as a guest, he should say yes. It would be polite to go along with it. But it wouldn't be polite if the place suddenly burned down because of all these fires. Chewing his lower lip, Niter asked, "Um, is it safe to do that? Your place won't burn down?"

Hesitating for a moment, Hestia admitted, "We think it might've been part of why everything blew up. Something went wrong with the flames. But they're fine now!" She quickly reassured. "They'd been fine for a long time, and I started lighting and taking care of them over a decade ago." She turned her gaze toward the fires, expression fond, "The atmosphere here has a special gas in it, it's why the air sometimes smells especially sweet. The basins that hold the flames draw in the gases in the air, condensing them to a small air. With the right placement and degree of friction, a person can light one with just the snap of their hand. That's all it takes." Walking up the temple steps, Hestia remembered to ask, "You aren't claustrophobic are you?"

Niter didn't respond at first, instead staring at her. It wasn't that he thought ill of her explanation, or that she was setting him up for certain death — but it did take a damn long time for her statement to compute. It wasn't often that Niter heard something along the lines of my entire world blew up because of these fires, but I started lighting more fires over ten years ago and nothing has exploded yet. Usually there was some kind of addendum to go along with that, like how a gas line was fixed or the forest wasn't dried out anymore.
But what it sounded like was something like basically the whole place is full of gasoline vapors, especially around the basins, so you'll probably explode the place if you fart especially hard. That… Wasn't promising, but neither was refusal.
Once he'd stopped going wall-eyed about it, Niter stopped to consider her question. "I … Don't think so? Not that I remember?" He'd been shoved in lockers before, and he actually kind of liked it. It was quieter in there, usually.
"Does that have something to do with the fires?"

"Oh no, not at all. It's just that the Under City has some fairly narrow tunnels. I wouldn't want them to alarm you," Hestia assured him, leading Niter through the massive temple. The walls were full of reliefs, many fairly abstract in design, but some featured figures in robes that were somewhat similar to the one Niter was wearing. It should be noted that none of them seemed to be in the midst of some sacrificial right. Actually it was more like they were... cleaning?Soon they reached a narrow door, open and waiting in a shadowy corner. With a snap of Hestia's fingers over a nearby sconce, a small ball of light appeared, showing a stony stairway that led down and down and down."All of the growing areas and garden are underground. It's quite extensive, actually. Much more than I've had a chance to explore." She sounded a little proud of it. And she was. Not everybody could live out adventures worthy of Indiana Jones in their own home!

Under City? Niter thought that sounded familiar. It took a minute of casting his mind back to The Before Times™ (puberty) when he had played World of Warcraft before he recognized it as the primary city for the undead. Well, that was Lordaeron, but it also wasn't — it was just as much the Undercity, just like she mentioned. If they went down there, could he expect cartoonish skeletons and floppy grey butcher dudes with their guts hanging out? Or all the weird green slime running through channels like it was some kind of sewer system? Or, like, demons?
That set Hestia's Under City up to be something pretty interesting, by Niter's standards. Or, well, they would be interesting if he was investigating them from behind the safety of a screen.
He followed without a word, content to let her lead the way. As they walked, he stared at the reliefs, and screwed up his eyes whenever he passed one he couldn't quite recognize. Seemed like they were doing chores? But why would someone want to immortalize that? Chores were boring. That's why he never did them.
"Oh," he perked as soon as she mentioned the garden again. "You have plants underground? Do they need grow lights? Or is there, um, something different about them that they don't need to photosynthesize? Are they more like fungi?" A mushroom garden would be just as cool as a regular garden, if not better — it harkened back to Subnautica's koosh zone, back when it was the koosh zone, and he couldn't remember the new name, but he definitely remembered the towering mushrooms (and the reaper leviathans lurking around in the same area).

"They're more of a moss? Spongey with very tiny leaves, but sometimes there's flowers as well, so we've settled on calling it moss-like." Well, Algol had settled on that and Hestia was very happy not to have to remember, let alone pronounce, a more scientific name. "They don't need light at all, quite the opposite really. It can't be fond at all in the upper city, and the samples we tried to bring to the surface dried up very quickly. We've found it primarily grows on specific types of stone, though." The stairs opened up into a hallway. On one side there was a stone wall, roughly blocked off by stone rubble. Hestia pretended she didn't see it and pointed to a hole with a ladder going down, "The closest growing room can be reached by the ladder." A glimpse through the hole would show a faint red glow that was unlike the bobbing lights of the torches. Swinging her hand over to point at a nearby door, she added, "There's also a pharmacy through there. Most of the plants in there would have come from other worlds, but they're so old that handling them at all just turns them into dust."

Niter was happy to listen in silence while Hestia explained the moss-like flora that awaited them. He'd never heard of anything like that on Earth; it had him wondering if he could steal away a moss cutting and take it back with him. His uniform didn't have many hiding places, but maybe it'd fit in his subspace pocket, or he could stuff it into that one really badly placed pocket…
He did, however, stop and stare beyond the rubble. It was hard to miss — in areas absent as much light, a red glow stood out more. He decided he wanted nothing to do with it; red was an ominous enough color when it wasn't glowing.
"Oh, um…" Niter frowned, then swallowed. "It's, uh, probably for the best? Because, like, if Hestia was anything like Earth's history? Lots of people died by plant." Granted, some of them actually did turn out to make fine medicines once refined and standardized, but Niter was a firm believer that the difference between medicine and poison was the dose.
It took all of his bravery, plus an advance of his future bravery, to manage another question. "What's, uh, down that hall? The fallen one."
Not that asking stopped him from following along obediently. He figured they were going down the ladder if they were going to look at plants.lizbot sorry this took me forever!

"I don't know...I think killer plants are very cool," Hestia muttered, more to herself in a a sulky little voice. But no, now was not the time to dwell on cool factor. "A cave full of the poop of bat things." She gave Niter a hollow gaze without even glancing at the rubble. "Don't look at it," she whispered, a flush of embarrassment rising. In a rush she went on, "The garden's this way." And yes it was the hold with the ladder, which she didn't even bother climbing down, instead opting to just jump. The room was definitely not a very standard sort of garden. There wasn't even any dirt, but instead a series of long rectangular slabs covered in a glowing red moss of sorts. The plants were differentiated by hues that varied from a near pink to fire engine to a red that was almost black. here and there, several were speckled in bright white flowers that bore a strong resemblance to white violets. One section of the garden contained what was clearly a small lab, with tools and instruments of the familiar Earth variety. On the other side was an arched doorway, with more glowing red beyond it, along with the sound of running water. "It was all mostly dry and dead when I first came down here, but after awhile it just kind of...picked itself back up again. Not really needing much help from me. I'm ah, not very good with plants myself," Hestia admitted while also feeling a little proud that her world's plants were able to raise themselves. Strickenized niter is a soft fluffy hug of a boy who i love ok ~ i would walk 10000 miles ok ~ i would wait 84 years ok ~ !

To be fair to her, Niter could admit that killer plants were cool. In, like, video games, or documentaries. When they weren't threatening his life. And when they did? Niter was going to show off how he almost made track team.
"Oh, like guano?" Niter asked once she explained the cave. "Um, that's really good for the plants, though… And it's good for gunpowder?" Not that Hestia needed any explosive substances, what with the fires everywhere.
He followed her when she moved, though he still spared a glance back at the creepy cave. Maybe bat-thing poop wasn't the greatest for plants, or maybe it had the same mix of nitrogen and phosphorous but these plants didn't thrive off of it, or something. Or Hestia just didn't feel like cleaning out all that bat poop for a cave that wasn't going to see any use. Niter thought the last one was the most reasonable answer.
Where Hestia did the unruly teenager thing where she jumped off the edge, Niter used the ladder. He was thankful he did, too, because when he turned around, he was met with a sight that made coming to Hestia absolutely worth every last anxiety-inducing moment. He let out a shocked and breathless "Oh" as his attention immediately darted between the narrow band of hues in the room. There was weird mossy stuff that looked like the people-mulch from War of the Worlds, flowers that looked very much like Earth varieties, and flowers that looked nothing like Earth varieties. And it all smelled… Spicy. Pungent in a way that was both good and unexpected.
"Oh, I can teach you how to plant," Niter replied without thinking. He crouched down to look under, over and around each of the different plant varieties, as if staring at them would avail him of their secrets. "Normally, um, ground covers like clover choke out other plants and compete for nutrients, but it looks like these ones might be more commensal? Like, um, you know, real moss. Not that this moss is fake, it's just… Not Earth moss?" He shrugged, abandoning his effort to save face.
"It's neat that they came back without much help, though. I wonder if they're, like, perennials."

"The world did it," Hestia explained, suddenly a little absent as her mind began to connect bat-poop->plant growth->she'd potentially been keeping a whole section of the ecosystem out of the picture, leaving magic to be the sole force to allow for any growth at all. "I heard it from others too, and seen it here. The more time and energy we put into restoration, the world ah...matches it? Like with the plants here, but also with structures fixing themselves, little by little. Insects and animals coming back." If the bats come back, she'll have to free them right? Free them to poop all over... "You seem to really enjoy plants?" Hestia decided to firmly focus on anything other than her future in bat poop, and Niter did seem enthusiastic about her world's somewhat limited plant life. Idly, she wondered if his world was one of the ones that was abundant with it.

"That um." Niter chewed his lip. There wasn't really a socially acceptable, no-harm-intended way to say that makes no sense. That'd be like saying tourists brought back Bermuda or something, just by going there, and that it had absolutely nothing to do with the influx of cash from said tourists. Or like, if they said the cash was magic that just… What, passively left their bodies? Exchanged with the world? Did the world grow all warm and fuzzy inside because their senshi was present, and then decide to revitalize some plants? It seemed like a burgeoning superstition to Niter. There had to be some mechanic behind it that explained why visitation and restoration were connected.
But, as nice as Hestia was, Niter didn't think she was the right person with whom to have that conversation. Instead, he stared at his feet and hummed thoughtfully.
Maybe he could have a conversation with Jet about it after. Or like, see if someone in the Negaverse has found a way to go to their planet? And if not, well, Niter wanted to see for himself, with his own world, so he'd have to figure out a way to get there. That'd be a whole thing to consider later. Much later.
"Oh, uh, yeah, I um. Have a lot. In pots. At home." Niter nodded when his train of thought was rerouted back to the present. "I dunno, they're nice. They just sit there and grow. And they don't make fun of me."
He pointed at one of the softer buds. "Can I take one with me?"

Hestia was reminded of the time that Mindy had grown leery of Mrs. Lee's greenhouse and had her attach googly eyes to all the plants in it to make them "less menacing". The result had been.... Well, she'd had to carefully remove them the next day. Apparently a lot of their googly stares has been deemed "sarcastic." Niter clearly had a much less complicated, much more wholesome relationship with plants. She didn't know why non-plant life was making fun of Niter, but she very responsibly held back the offer to beat the s**t out of people. Because she was a peaceful senshi. Who cared about everyone. And was focusing on harm reduction. At the question, Hestia relaxed the jaw she hadn't realized she was clenching with a hurried, "Of course! If you can get it to survive on Earth, you'll have to ;et me know." Moving to the corner with the lab equipment, there were a number of small pots and specimen jars, along with rocks similar to the large slabs the plants grew on. "There will be a tea sample too! In the giftbags, that is." Oh... oh yes, this was meant to be a test tour, wasn't it? "Do you think the plants here would be a good draw, for people to visit?" Her voice took a turn for the uncertain. Where magical explanations could be taken with ease, it was the restoration of her world's purpose where she found herself less sure.

That'd be the challenge. Niter wasn't a stranger to growing plants in a climate foreign to their native one, and that required a lot of temperature and humidity control. Sometimes he had to add more nitrogen to the soil to approximate the correct composition, or add more to its minuscule ecosystem to keep a plant alive for longer. But all the plants in Laike's house were, well, from earth.
These ones would be making the journey to a completely different planet, with a different soil composition and atmospheric composition and he didn't much know anything about feeding them, either. But he would try; it'd be pretty exciting if he succeeded. And probably scary, because there was a titanic level of environmental responsibility he felt he was taking on in the advent that the plant propagated and started destroying whole ecosystems as an invasive species, but maybe that wouldn't happen if he kept it in a pot on his desk and didn't have any weird accidents that spawned superhero or supervillain backstories.
Maybe, just maybe, he could have a nice thing and not accidentally destroy the world with it.
It looked like she was already set up for taking a plant home, so Niter was happy to busy himself with the specimen jars as a way to avoid eye contact and take home a new friend. It also bought him a little time to think about the question, though NIter couldn't understand folks that disliked plants.
"I think so? There's, like, Chinese and Japanese gardens that always draw crowds, you know? Plus if you could find a way to make them teaching points? Like why people cultivated the plants." He tried not to think about the gift bag part and the whole indebted feeling that came with that. Tried, but failed.
"But, like, I think people who um… Can get past the fact that this is a different planet? Would still want to visit if you decided to leave the plants out."

There was a stretch of companionable silence as Niter was given free reign to inspect the plant beds and the small lab area in the corner and Hestia mulled over his words. Later the corrupt would find himself settled in the next chamber over, on a bench and surrounded by an abundance of hearthflame, a lush and thriving carpet of it that covered the walls of an immense vertical garden. Stairs, seats, and statuary climbed up and up, presumably back toward the surface. There were small fountains too, and their soft trickle finally added a bit more life to the otherwise quiet world. Sitting next to him, Hestia asked again, "Would you like to light a perpetual flame before you go?"
