Oh. It was her.

Daphne was trying to be strong. She was trying to go and face Chaos head on, despite the fact that parts of her didn't even know if this was worth fighting anymore.

Would she be happier if she just-

No.

She kept cutting off those thoughts if they popped up, but seeing the Captain again made her heart twist in her chest.

"I won't kick you," she said, because of all of the things that had happened in their previous encounter, that had not been the most mature thing for her to do. "If you don't try to tell me to join the Negaverse."

Retzian drew in a sharp breath when she took in the rainbow clad, sad cat girl again. The request made her shake her head and almost wince, thinking of the other Senshi’s words. “I wasn’t trying to tell you to join, and I apologize if I did, I was simply offering you another path, that’s all. I’m still offering it, but I’m not going to force it. I don’t want you to be a shell of yourself. You’re too sweet and you don’t deserve that.”

The Captain wanted to hug her again, wanted to draw the girl into her arms and protect her against every bad thing that had and could happen to her, and her hands flexed slightly as she fought the urge.

“...I’m…I’m glad that you won’t kick me though. I appreciate that…” The smile that she gave was a little strained, and finally, Retzian took a few steps towards the girl. “Are you feeling any better?”

"I'm glad you don't want me to be a shell?" said Daphne, blinking. She wasn't sure that she knew where that was coming from, she didn't think she'd said anything about it before.

If anything, she thought she might feel like a shell now with how hard it had been to chase away the sadness over the last few months.

Not that she could take the other path, even if it was-

No. Not even thinking about that.

"Should we try again, with everything?" she asked, and then reached out a hand in the Earth custom. "My name is Daphne."

A moment passed and, then she decided to be at least somewhat honest. "And I don't know if I'm better. I'm trying to plan a funeral for my family, who I've recently found out have been dead for a thousand years, so that's where I'm at."

“Captain Retzian.” Taking hold of Daphne’s hand, she hesitated before pulling the girl into another hug, fierce and long. “I’m sorry that you’re having to go through that. If I can help you in any way, let me know. Planning a funeral isn’t easy. I had to do my own when I was just out of high school. And it doesn’t get any easier. Not for a long while. It’s scary and you feel so alone…but, Daphne, you don’t have to be alone. I’m here.”

Retzian held the girl close and stroked her hair, pressing a kiss to the top of her head again. “If you’ll have me, I’m here. I’ll do whatever I can to see that you’re okay. I promise. Just tell me what you need, and I’ll provide it. I have money. If you’re in need of things, I can do that easily.”

Was this…treason? It…felt rather wrong but.

She couldn't help herself. She wanted this girl. Wanted Daphne to be okay.

This time, Daphne didn't pull away from the hug. She hugged back, squeezing just as tight as she was being squeezed. She needed this. She needed this so badly, and it was fine, wasn't it?

Retzian had said that she wasn't going to corrupt her. The feeling of Chaos was still making her head swim, but it wasn't like she was giving in to it. She was just hugging someone real, someone who understood things in a way that some of the others didn't.

"It's not like Earth funerals," she told her as she did, eventually, back up just enough to breathe. "It's nothing expensive. I just need to cremate the remains and bring them to the savanna."

She paused, tears pricking at her eyes again, because of course they were.

"I just have to find the remains, first, and I don't know where they are, and my world is full of Chaos."

Retzian nodded, chewing her lip as she looked at the girl. “...Then…we have to figure out how to find them. And how to help your world get…less filled with Chaos, right?” It was easy to say, but it didn’t seem as though it would be easy to do...and she had absolutely no idea how to accomplish such a thing.

“I’d love to help in any way that I can but…it might be a while…so why don’t you have a funeral here on Earth to tide you over? To give you someplace here that you can remember them. It’ll be somewhere that you can go to…be with them even if they’re not there…it’s not ideal but it’s a good middle ground while we work on the issues of finding them and getting them cremated and brought to…”

She paused and gave the girl a sharp look. “...Did you say to the savanna? Just what is your world like?”

An Earth funeral as an in between step? That was something that Daphne hadn't thought of before, but she found herself nodding. She'd seen people laying flowers on gravestones, and talking to them.

She didn't like the idea of the boxes, the caskets that tried to keep bodies away from the soil and the plants and the life that they were meant to be returning to, but a stone where she could remember her loved ones by? That, she thought, would be okay.

"It's a good idea," she said. "I think I would like that, while we work on the rest."

It just slipped out, that we. She didn't even think about it.

She stepped away to more of a conversational distance as she added, "And yes, my world is mostly savanna. I'm still not used to how cold it is here."

“Get me the information that you want, and I’ll get a gravestone made. If you want a message or any art on it, just let me know, I’ll get it all taken care of and I’ll take you there the next time I see you.” Provided that it was finished…but honestly, Retzian didn’t care how much she had to spend, Daphne would get a place to mourn. To let her feelings out and to remember her family.

“Will you tell me about it? That sounds so different from here…what kind of animals did you have? Were there lions and zebra and giraffes?”

Those were the animals of the savanna, were they not? Or…since Daphne was an alien, perhaps she had them but they were all…green and short…or…

Or something.

“I want to hear about your home, if you want to tell me, and yes, we’ll work on the rest. You don’t have to do this alone. I’m here with you, Daphne.”

"I think-" and she trailed off for a moment as she did think. "I think it would be okay if it just said for my family. Otherwise it would be a lot of names, and it doesn't really need that. It's not where they are, it's just somewhere to remember them."

Anyway, she knew the names. She could whisper them as she sat in front of the stone, as she laid flowers.

She could talk about her world, too.

"We have some animals like that," she said, "But they might be different from what you're thinking? The giraffes here are much bigger. Ours are-" she made a motion with her hand of something less than a foot tall, something that could have sat in the palm of her hand. "They scurry through the grasses and use their long necks to eat the tops of flowers instead of the stems. Which, yes," she added, before Retzian could ask, "Is adorable. People like them as pets."

A second passed. Her gaze was somewhere far away, although without really noticing it, she had stopped crying. "Cats are the most sacred. There are lots of different species. Lots of sizes, and colors."

“For my family it is then, Daphne. Can you meet me here in a week? I should be able to get it done by then, and I can take you there.” Retzian listened to her talking about her world, pleased that she had calmed down enough to stop crying, and Retzian was pleased that she had distracted her well enough to accomplish that.

“I hope you can show me all of it some day, when we get it fixed up. I want to see a small baby giraffe who eats flowers…like…I need that now, and I had no idea that I did.”

She laughed softly and hesitated, closing the gap between them again and pulling Daphne into her arms, wiping away the traces of tears that still lingered on her face with the sleeve of her coat. “You’re very strong, and I’m proud of you for all that you’re doing. If it ever gets to be too much…and I’m sure that it will…but, go and visit your family. Like I said, give me a week and we’ll have their memorial all set up. I’ll make it perfect for you, Daph.”

Could she get it fixed up?

The giraffes were probably gone, too, but she didn't want to tell Retzian that right now. She just wanted to enjoy the hug and hold onto the hope, for just this once, that maybe she could work on making things a little more okay.

"Yeah," she murmured, into the final hug. "I can tell you more, later. I can show you some of it."

If Retzian was already Chaos, how would she react to the current state of the world? Daphne wasn't sure she wanted to find out. It would be better to wait and show her if she could do something about the Chaos, if she could get everything to be at least a little bit alive.

"And, Retzian?"

When she pulled away, she was smiling. "Thank you. For everything."

Retzian returned the smile and nodded. “I’ll see you in a week, Kitten. Keep your chin up. You’ve got this. We’ve got this.”

Taking one last moment to stroke the girl’s cheek, the Captain took a step backwards and teleported away, needing to figure out the best way to get a memorial headstone made…and made so quickly.

This was fine. She would manage.
