Back Alley Potions

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Magical potions are a bit of a risk in Tendaji, believe it or not. It might be because most are used to working with natural items, or that many potions don't always have their intended effects. Some of the more dubious ones have been rumored to cause scales to grow, or blindness. So if you pass by someone in a back alley saying they have a potion to help you grow two feet taller, it's often better to look the other way.

Or is it?

What would you find if you looked over at what they had to sell? Is it really all that strange? Or maybe you'll find a fun hidden gem worth taking home.

[ What might you find someone selling if you approached a back-alley potion shop? Note: Potions that change appearance with growths are event-limited and may not be purchased/used from this prompt ]

Dem 1

V'demhe stifled a yawn as she walked through the marketplace. She was getting tired after a long day and was about ready to tell Tytus she was done for the day. However, as she passed by a small alleyway she noticed something out of the corner of her eye. It took her two steps to pause as she turned her head to look at what it was. A tilt of her head followed. A shabby looking stall held bottles of different sizes and colors as well as a few jars that didn't show what was inside.

"Look at that." She spoke to Tytus as she pointed down the alley. "Think it has anything interesting?" Already she was intrigued by the colorful containers. Dem wasn't sure what it was she would find there.

Exploring foreign countries with an Alkidike warrior definitely was an interesting experience. Once again Tytus found himself amused as they walked through a marketplace, needing supplies before continuing on towards Zena, but once they had everything they needed even he was ready to retire for the evening in a cozy tavern with good food and drink. He was so focused on just finishing up so that he could relax that Tytus almost continued walking before Dem’s words finally registered. “Look at what?” He asked with a small smirk, the Oban turning back to see whatever it was that Dem had pointed out. “Hmm…a small stall with a faded sign that you can barely read with shelves full of colorful containers.” He raised an eyebrow towards the Alkidike before giving a faint shrug of why not.

I think I’ve seen something like this in Oba before, but you have to be careful about what you get.” He warned Dem before moving forward, already figuring that she was going to head into the alley either way and it was best if he got a head start just in case there was something shady going on here. There was a strange old Sautian man in dark gray and dull brown clothing who had a ridiculously large pointed hat too big for the alley, the thing probably would get stuck if it turned one way or the other should the man hobble down the path away from the stall, but he didn’t seem bothered as he simply raised a hand in greeting. “Got some real good ole fashioned potions ‘ere.” He crooned as he gestured towards the brews. “Feel free to help yourselves while I brew some special orders in the back.” It was at that point that Tytus noticed a small crevice in the alleyway that also seemed ridiculously narrow with a crooked door, but somehow the man managed to get through hat and all before leaving Tytus and Dem alone to look at the strange array of bottles that he had for sale.

Dem 2

His description of it made her chuckle. While it certainly looked shady she hadn't intended for him to say such out loud. Though it was amusing at least. "Mhm, that." V'demhe gave a slight shake of her head and followed after him, looking at her companion as he told her she needed to be careful of what was purchased. "Know from experience do ya? Now that's something I'd like to hear." What had he gotten from such a place?

When the old man gave them his greeting, telling them there were old fashion potions, one of Dem's brows rose. When he took his leave to continue his brews in the back she looked over at Tytus with a serious look before a smile broke out. Curiosity couldn't hurt.

So the Alk moved closer to eye the potion bottles that were on display. She wasn't likely to buy anything but she wanted to know what they did. And some of them even looked kinda pretty color wise. "Do you need a potion Tytus?"

"What?" Tytus quirked a playful brow. "I work for the military, the question is more like what haven't I experienced?" The Oban shook his head as the old man disappeared back into the shadows and glanced back towards Dem. "He'll still be listening and watching somehow, I'm sure." Something strange about the old man, but it was fitting for someone who specialized in potions like these. Tytus just hoped that there wasn't anything too crazy in the mixture but even the thought seemed a bit ridiculous considering what he was looking at. There most definitely had to be some strange and crazy concoctions in such a place!

"Unless there's a potion of never needing to sleep....though I do like an occasional dream so maybe not. Speed sounds like fun if I want to travel to three or more countries within a few days instead of weeks." Tytus replied with a chuckle as he picked up a strange yellow potion, tilting it in the few rays of light in the alley before placing it back. "What about you?"

His answer made her give a thoughtful look as she tilted her head at him. Dem somehow managed to forget that Tytus was in the military. Though so far he really didn't act like it around her. At least not her idea of what military should act. V'demhe had to admit she had only ever come across the very serious type when it came to such a path. "I forget that sometimes.." She finally stated.

The alk then listened to his list of things he might like. "Mm, I like sleeping and I am sure you enjoy your dreams occasionally. If your talking in your sleep is anything to go by." She teased. The one about speed only made her chuckle. "Isn't that what a fast mount is for?" One could simply ride a beast. The Kinfa were faster than most after all.

Turning her attention to the potions she let her gaze roam over the different bottles. "Hm. Perhaps a potion for happiness?"

Tytus chuckled. "It's fine, some of my own soldiers forgot about it as well." The Oban gave a slight shrug. "Not like it matters when I decided to take an extended vacation instead of working within the capital." He had his own reasons for such a decision, something he still didn't really discuss not even with his traveling companion, and it had kept Tytus from really opening up fully despite his playful comments and flirtations. There was still some hidden hurt he was recovering from, the Oban captain doing his best to make due with life without lingering on the past so that he could finally move forward even though he wasn't certain just how much he could even trust anymore.

"Oh? I suppose they must be, if I could just remember them." Teased Tytus in return as he focused back on the present. "Sleep talking must be more common than I thought considering I'm not the only one who sometimes does it." The commentary about a mount brought a mischievous grin to his lips. "A fast mount is always the best way to travel, but it would be fun to race against them for once. I would enjoy how puzzled my xaraan would be if I did beat him in a race across Sauti or something." Rakan was his best companion, the Xaraan taking a break in a comfortable stable with the others to recover from so much traveling while they had opted to stroll the marketplace for amusement today.

The amusement in his crimson gaze did flicker for a moment at Dem's remark about a potion for happiness, the thought bringing almost a wistful expression to his face before he picked up another bottle to study so that his posture was away from the Alkidike and making it harder for her to spot his own conflicted expression. "If only. If it was that easy I'm sure this potion shop would be front and center with a huge line for such a thing. There is an illusion potion here though...can make you imagine whatever scenery you want for a few hours? Now that's interesting if some foreign island with a good drink in hand could make you truly happy. Maybe we could try this one out and get some good ale from the tavern or a fancier bottle of wine with it....should one even mix alcohol and potions? Though I suppose magic works however it wants regardless."

She had to admit she was curious about what made him take an extended leave to travel around. Much less with the likes of her. Not many were willing to do so with an Alk. Of course she wasn't going to ask him about it. Dem figured if he simply wanted to enjoy traveling then she could give him that. If he wanted to tell her something more then he could do that as well. "Makes me wonder how serious of a solider you are." She offered a grin to show she was still teasing him. V'demhe would very much like to see Tytus working. She had a feeling she would be surprised by the difference.

"Mm, I might have to stuff your ears with cotton so you can't hear what I'm saying then.. might divulge Aishan secrets." Dem laughed a little as she turned to look at a curious looking bottle. It was shaped differently than the others so it had caught her attention. "I don't think your xaraan would like that. Might become offended that you were faster. He might peck at your ankles." That would be amusing to see though. So maybe they should try it?

As Tytus moved it caught her attention and she was back to looking at him rather than the bottles on the shelf. It was curious though, the way his body language changed. While she couldn't see his expression she could read the way the rest of him stood and she could hear his words just fine. He might he able to hide the look he held but he couldn't make her suddenly deaf. Dem frowned a little before turning her head to the side to stare at a random bottle. "Yeah.. if only..." She heard the rest of what he said, a soft smile taking place. "We could try it. Would that make you happy though? Not just for a moment but truly happy." The Alk reached out to touch a blue glass bottle with a crystal stopper. "Anymore I'm happiest when I'm near my children.. the ones I can find anyways. The pain of missing one is a bit haunting though."

Dem moved away to look at a few other potions before she picked one up. It had truly caught her attention and she seemed to inspect it a bit. It promised to change a drink to ones favorite flavor no matter what it was. With her spending so much time in the south her usual favorites found in and around Chibale were hard to come by.

Tytus chuckled at the teasing. “If I showed how seriously I took my job then that would ruin some of my mystery. Still, just know that I was a bit higher up before deciding to travel instead.” He teased in return, picking up a bottle and tipping it towards Dem playfully. He once had a group of soldiers under his lead, as surprising as it was, but now he was a solo act since deciding to roam and gather intel for the army instead. It allowed him the freedom he needed to get away from everything for a bit and Tytus was just thankful it had worked out in such a way.

“Spicy Aishan secrets, is that what some of that was?” Joked Tytus with a laugh. “Rakan probably would get his revenge somehow, right? I should probably put this bottle down then.” He replaced the bottle on the shelf before picking up one with a bluish hue instead. Water breathing? Did he need that? Probably not. Tytus immediately placed it back before continuing on his way, his fingers lingering against the cool glass of the illusion bottle as he considered the question. “True happiness is a myth.” He replied after a moment with a soft chuckle. “So I just do my best to enjoy every moment anyways.” Tytus glanced over at Dem before his own expression shifted. “Missing family is always heart-breaking…” He began quietly with empathy in his gaze. “I’m sorry that you’ve experienced such loss as well. The snarky letters from one son is enough to keep me going, but having lost someone who you thought you would share your life with and a daughter is still...something of an adjustment. So if you ever need some additional amusement I can offer that to try to help with any quiet moments, I may not be much of an emotional support but I can try my best to entertain.” He admitted before passing on the bottle to instead focus on something more helpful, a healing balm for helping to stitch together skin quicker. Admittedly it did bring him a few steps closer to Dem, the Oban leaning against her lightly as if offering support even while browsing bottles since he didn’t feel quite like staying still in this particular moment.

"Ah yes, can't ruin the mystery. I might lose interest then." Dem was joking. Even without the mystery surrounding him Tytus was an interesting person. She genuinely enjoyed spending time with him and traveling across the territories with him so far had been a blessing. It kept her busy and gave her less and less time to get lost in her grief.

A single small brow aimed high as he mentioned spicy Aishan secrets. "Spicy? Oh well now you know too much.." Her head shook a little and she clicked her tongue as if reprimanding him. "I'll have to punish you somehow."

When things went on to the more serious subject she seemed to turn her attention to the bottles. Of course her eyes focused on his hand, watching what he picked up next. Hearing about the snarky letters from a son made her give a ghost of a smirk as she thought about the earthling son she'd more or less adopted. It was who she was on the way to find. Granted he didn't send letters, so if he had then she might not be on the road with Tytus at this moment. "I'll have to remind this son of mine to send snarky letters." She focused on the bottle in his hand and seemed to take a moment to consider before she reached for it, not minding that he was leaning against her. "You found something useful." The comment was made without thinking as her mind was elsewhere. Tytus had offered to entertain her in place of emotional support and the offer was an interesting one. "You have done a wonderful job of providing me with companionship so far. I do appreciate it. If you've not got anything more pressing then I wouldn't mind if the two of us continued to travel together for a while longer." V'demhe was even open to something a bit more but she felt a bit of fear at voicing that so she kept it to herself.

She was old and the threat of rejection was a fear she could not face just yet.

Tytus simply chuckled, the Oban amused by their banter once more. "Exactly. The mystery is always the fun part of any journey." He teased, moving a few more bottles around as he continued browsing the shelves as they talked. So far he hadn't been tempted to buy any of them even though he was enjoying seeing whatever the shopkeeper had to offer. Something to make your skin tough as rock? He dealt with enough dry skin in the desert as it was. Still, Tytus kept the playful commentary to himself as he found himself looking back over at Dem as their conversation continued.

"Snarky letters are better than none, right? It's always a good challenge to see how I can reply to bring out more snappy responses." Joked Tytus, not truly bothered by his son's attitude since he understood the reasoning behind it. It was best to keep in touch but not to worry one another, at least that was how they worked out since they knew to trust each other's ability to survive in this world. Valek didn't want to be coddled and Tytus knew it was best to allow him to grow in his own way, all things considered.

"As long as it works. Hopefully we wouldn't need something like this, but perhaps it would be good in case of emergency." Mused Tytus with a slight shrug. "I am good at stitching up wounds though so perhaps not, that's more of my knowledge from all those mysterious past experiences." His gaze flickered from the bottle towards the Alkidike, considering her words, and then Tytus nodded. "I don't see any reason why we shouldn't travel together more. Where are you aiming to go next? I'm open to seeing any nearby countries, learning what I can while experiencing the world is my goal." It was part of his duties, even though he had taken a step away from leading a squad it was for the best since he needed the fresh air and could still be helpful by gathering intel along the way.

Sabra Knight
small tag, sorry. I have no spoons after today.

She seemed to lose all interest in the potions around them, making sure that they were returned to their rightful place, and turned to look at him. Her traveling partner was mysterious when it came to his pat and the things he was capable of. In fact Dem had learned he had a whole slew of skills just hiding behind that innocent front.

After a pause she decided to skip past the obvious question to ask about what else he knew. V'demhe would learn that along the way and that was half the fun. I stead she chose to answer the bit about where she would want to go next. "I think after Zena I would like to try going to Yael." There were a number of things there that she was curious about.

No worries. Sorry for my own delay. x.x

"Yael?" Tytus paused before looking back towards the bottles, his hand reaching for a random one to distract himself from the flash of pain that country brought. Just thinking about it...well, that opened up a whole series of memories that he was still trying to forget. As much as he wished that he had moved on there was no denying the pain in his heart whenever Yael was mentioned. It made him think of her and the very thought made his smile fade, the Oban looking at the potions to hide his expression from Dem.

"Hmm. That one might not be in the books for me." He managed after a moment, forcing a sheepish smile as he looked over at the Alkidike. "But I am thinking about Belrea at some point, maybe we'll have to meet up again and swap stories once we've seen both countries."
