Puleleiite was wandering about the nearby village. Being so familiar with the Matori adults, she felt comfortable with such responsibility. But even then, she knew she had to come home before the sun got too low, and was confident she still had time to purchase some candy with the bobbles she found around the sea.

As she wandered about, she ignored a lot of the other children, waving them off as she was on a mission and the candy stall was well in her sights. So much so she didn't notice the other people in the immediate area.

Pello was exploring the local area, curious about the sights and enjoying the adventure. Etana was somewhere around here, but often they would split up just as much as they stuck to one another. It was a very organic relationship, but he didn't mind. They always found themselves back with one another. And if he were honest, she was probably much safer than him, considering her skills with the bow and her attentiveness.

As he wandered about, his eyes were filled with the beautiful flashes of color of the locals. Lovely teals and blues mostly but there was an interesting dash of shady tans that were charming themselves.

However, is was the dark skin that darted through the crowd that caught him off guard, and he did a double take at the youngling that was in the marketplace.

"Is that...?"

Marching forward, the youngling found her way in front of the line and grinned brightly up at the merchant. She was quite the regular, and just the sight of her caused the Matori candy maker to chuckle.

"The usual?" He asked in their native tongue, and Puleleiite grinned. Normally one to snack on many savory things, this little treat break was a secret. At least one she didn't often drag her siblings along with.

The tall lolly was handed to her, and she traded in her shells with another grin before spinning around with her prize. Just for her bright eyes to catch sight of the red man across the clearing.

Red as in red, not like the Obans they normally encountered.

When the girl turned around, Pello was confident she was a Kahikinan. Of course the markings were one indicator, but the bobble atop her forehead and her bright red eyes were a key giveaway. He gaped a moment - such a hybrid was unheard of. She had to be part menehune with those sage green markings. Surprised, he blinked once, twice, and a third time before debating if he should go over there and ask.

She was a child, and it probably was for the best he didn't approach her out of the blue.

Pello need not worry too much, considering Puleleiite was confident, curious, and willing to get the answers herself. Lifting her head, she all but stomped over to the taller Kahikinan, her red eyes cooling examining him as he stood before her.

Finally, in Matorian, she spoke up with a cool air.

"Are you from Kahikina?"

As she stomped over, Pello resisted the urge to smirk at her. Her attitude and confidence reminded him of his younger sister, and a small pang of homesickness settled in his stomach. Clearing his throat to collect himself, he leaned down a little bit when she looked up at him, putting on a friendly smile as he go a closer look at her markings. It was so strange, but seemed to suit her well as she wore it with confidence that was that of a well-raised child.

However, when she spoke, he only blinked. He understood Kahikina, but the rest of the words were something foreign.

Eyes darting around, he connected the dots quickly - she was not from Kahikina, and she did not speak his language. She must have been born and raised here.

"Erm....pardon?" he responded in common.

She pursed her lips at his response, though Puleleiite was confident enough in her language because of living with such a large family and parents who immigrated from Kahikina. Her fathers mostly spoke in common, but occasionally would revert back to Menenese or Mohakan. Thankfully, the children were well educated on both languages and common, but often reverted to Matorian because it was so widely used in the area.

Blinking, Puleleiite reverted to common with a smile, "You are from Kahikina!"

Pello's eyes widened a moment at her shift to common, as relief fell across his face. He knew younglings often didn't pick up the language until they were in school, so thankfully she seemed to be ahead of her group...or a little older. He wasn't so familiar with them to recognize the right ages.

Either way, he smiled brightly at her curiosity, ignoring the stares of the locals clearly keeping an eye on the stranger with one of the resident children. He didn't blame them - they were a community afterall.

"I am." He responded with his own smile.

The little girl seemed to hum with excitement at his answer, as if she were overwhelmed with questions suddenly out of the blue. She hadn't seen any outside of her family, especially not one so red, and as a result her candy was forgotten as she looked up at him with her eyes.

"Me too!" she responded with a giggle, "My dads moved here before I was born, so I've never been, but I've heard so so so much!"

Or so much as she considered. She, like any eager child, asked her elder sister and husband quite a few questions, along with her dads.

"Are you from the sea or the swamps?"

Pello laughed at her curiosity, nodding eagerly at her comments and examining her. She must be Moakai, obviously, but was she also Menehune? Once again he was struck at how the deep green markings contrasted with her blue skin. And the dark hair was also an obvious trait.

Her asking her questions and describing her heritage just confirmed it.

"Not quite. I'm from the beach. A Hapuna. You can tell from my fins." He added as he held up his arms and smiled while shaking them. Before he moved his head, "And my ears."

'Oh my goooosh!" she gasped, looking at his arms before looking at his ears, "How cool! They are just like the water people's here. I wish my ears were like that...all I've got is this bobble."

She liked her bobble, especially with how it added to her uniqueness from all the other children. She was the only one with it from her siblings and nieces, and had well grown past the jealousy of being the odd one out.

But still, she did like those ears.

Her energy was contagious, and Pello found himself following along with how she bounced all over the place, though he did push his hair back as he turned back to look at her again.

"I've noticed the same thing. Though ours are a little different color wise." He added helpfully, before quickly waving his hands in argument, "And bobbles are great! My partner is traveling with me and she has one. I love how they glow...a very unique trait you should be proud of."

She was proud of her traits, and started to eat her candy again as she considered his words. Sure, she wouldn't mind the other traits, but she had her own and she stood out amongst her closest siblings. Plus it was something she related to her older one.

Finally, she took a deep breath and sighed.

"I need to go home soon, but I can show you to the inn? Most speak common here so you shouldn't have too much of a problem..." She shifted her head to the side and waited, happy to walk him the few steps to the inn before she needed to rush home and see her family and prepare for dinner.

She would grow into the confidence, every little kid did, but Pello still nodded and smiled at her comments. When she offered to show him the way, he raised his hands and shook his head.

"That's alright. Remember that friend I spoke of? She's waiting for me so I might as well head back. It was nice meeting you, little Kahikinan. If you ever make your way across the sea to Hapuna, let them know Pello sent you over and I'm sure they'll make sure you and your family have a warm bed to rest in."

He stepped up and turned to walk away, nodding at the locals who were watching him closely and shaking his head. It was nice that they were so defensive, but even they couldn't stop a curious youngling who saw someone from their family's home.
