Abzu had talked her into taking a little more time for rest, and not just on that one night, when all it had taken was the faintest touch of calming magic for her to fall asleep standing up on him. She was still going out all night, most nights, since best she could tell, that was when most of the dangers was lurking, but she was taking the days for herself, to sleep and to watch shows and message friends.

Sadie was cutting back some on her client load, finding time where work had been instead of sleep, but that was okay. She had enough money to last for a little while, hopefully long enough that they could resolve whatever was going on with Faustite.

She was awake, now, and it was late afternoon, but even with the short days of winter, the sun had not quite yet dipped over the horizon. That meant she had time before she had to go checking the streets, and it was time that she did not think she wanted to spend alone.

She hadn't seen her best friend in a while, really, not since he'd found her drained and carried her home and she'd made the promises and decisions that had led her to this position in the first place. She missed him. She might have calmed him, but he brought her stability, brought her out of her own thoughts.

She was having a lot of thoughts right now.

So, she headed over, with a tray of her brother's cupcakes, and she knocked with her knuckles three times on his heavy door.

Ignacio had a lot of thoughts.

It had been hard, pulling up the bravery to tell Richard. Harder still was the blase way he had taken the news, something of a guess this is what’s happening now! that had taken him momentarily by surprise seeing as, over the years, Richard had gotten more hurt by the one at the center of the conversations. Faustite–Elex–stressed him out. He had taken Richard’s starseed once and about drained him to death another time.

How did he take the concept of by the way, he’s actually possibly purifying with such damn ease?

Perhaps he was the one that was stubborn about change, or his husband was so used to how chaotic life had been that something like this might-as-well happen. And it was for the best, if he could resolve Faustite fleeing. All they had to do from here really was find a royal that could handle it. Or Cosmos. That would probably work too, And a court. if Faustite’s heart was truly in it. Was his heart in it? All the insistence of getting rid of the youma didn’t quite match up with the realities of it, and they’d have to bridge that gap if Faustite was going to–

He heard the taps on his door.

live.

Ignacio let the thought hang in his mind as he moved to the door, scooting by a cat Viatrix that had been happily walking over to let him know someone was at the door, and a very eager golden retriever who sat near the door and wagged her tail. There were only so many people who would knock versus using the doorbell, so he had a pretty good feeling as to who that was without even checking the app.

He smiled in relief when it turned out he was correct in his guess. And cupcakes too? It brightened his mood, just a little bit.

“Sadie!” He stepped to the side, bowing gallantly as a joke moreso than anything else. “Come in!”

The door creaked open, and Sadie said, “Hi,” because there might have been thoughts swirling around in her head, but it didn’t seem quite polite to start talking about any of them right away, before her cupcakes had even found a spot on the table.

She wasn’t quite as energetic as she might have been other times, but she smiled all the same, because it was always good to see her best friend.

“Hi, Viatrix,” she added, and the dog got a small and awkward pet before she turned away from it, because she still didn’t know what to do around animals, not really.

Then all of her attention was on Ignacio, and she was wrapping one arm around his shoulders while she still tried to balance the tray of cupcakes in the other. “I feel like I haven’t seen you in so long,” she murmured into the tips of his hair.

It had been her own fault, at least partially, but she was glad as glad that she was here now.

He did catch the lack of energy, but it wasn’t so low as to alarm him. She was there now, and if she was there to talk, Ignacio was pretty sure she would bring up the reasons as to why.

Viatrix chirped, “Hey Sadie! Good to see you! How’s your brother?” followed by looking very closely at the plate Sadie was holding with her free hand. “Also, can I have a cupcake?”

“Vi,” Ignacio wrapped an arm around Sadie’s waist in turn to hug her close as Luz let out a happy bark and then trotted back into Luke’s office, satisfied with the attention she had received from the new guest, “she just got here–”

“Hey,” she giggled, “doesn’t mean I can’t ask for a cupcake.”

He rolled his eyes, offering a louder, “Don’t mind her,” and ignoring the following hey she got from below. Ignacio leaned back into Sadie, murmuring, “it has been a while, hasn’t it. Are you doing alright?”

It hadn’t been as long as it could have been, but it had been long enough for enough. A lot had happened over the past few weeks alone, and he was still trying to wrap his mind around the bulk of the last few days. To believe he had gone from believing the worst was inevitable to believing that, perhaps, there was a different kind of worst on the horizon. A different kind of worst, still involving the same person, ********. Where did he even start with this?

“Okay. Okay,” said Sadie to the Mauvian that was doing a good job of getting her attention off of Ignacio. She was doing such a good job of it that Sadie slipped away from the embrace with Ignacio to sit cross-legged on the floor instead, right there in the entryway.

The fact that she’d just come in did not seem to bother her as much as Ignacio thought it should.

“Here,” she said, cracking the box open and setting a cupcake on the floor next to her. The buttercream frosting was lavender, something she’d picked with these friends in mind. She hadn’t asked if it tasted like lavender, too, or just vanilla, but Viatrix didn’t seem scared to find out.

“He’s doing okay,” she said, and took a cupcake for herself, licking the icing. Vanilla, and lovely vanilla at that. “He made these. I don’t think he’s been powering up so much, but that’s okay with. Um. Everything.”

Her brother didn’t need to see any corpses, or be anywhere near Faustite. He didn’t need to question if she was doing enough with her pacifist approach when she knew that she’d already saved a few lives.

“And I’m okay too,” she told Ignacio, looking up at him from where she was sitting as she took another lick of icing. “I know we disagreed a little, last time we talked. I know you’ve wanted me to be more careful than I’ve been, but,”

She gave a gentle shrug. “I think I’ve been helping. I think I’ve been making progress.”

That was maybe a little more serious than was polite just a few seconds after entering a house, but it wasn’t like she was any good at manners anyway. “What about you? How are you?” she asked, and it was more than a polite question. Her eyes moved over him, a little worried, because she could see that he was tense.

Viatrix was absolutely delighted that Sadie immediately took her up on it, and she glanced up to stick out her tongue at her bonded–which to Ignacio, honestly looked more like she was blepping at him, but he’d roll his eyes and let her have it. Just as he was going to let her have the cupcake that she looked enamoured by, and she purred a, “He’s so talented!” at just how it smelled in front of her.

She loved the gentle purple that the lavender provided to the cupcake, and found herself tearing right into it as Sadie gave her the requested update. It was good to hear that he was doing good, even if he wasn’t powering up very much. With his magic, even if he only powered up to rid some youma from his surroundings, he was safer than he ever could have been as just a civilian. Especially with an unawakened starseed. Viatrix never wanted to find out someone she could have saved got corrupted instead.

“Good! Let him know I say hello, and his cupcakes are delicious,” she swallowed, ignoring the bit of frosting on her nose for the moment. She really could have just taken on her civilian guise–too late now. “If he needs any help with senshi stuff, lemme know. I don’t abandon my charges.”

She deferred to Ignacio for the rest, then, more interested in eating the cupcake she was presented with than interfering with their conversation. Perhaps Ignacio might have appreciated it if it had afforded him more time to think. “I had a feeling.” He let out a quiet sigh, finally sitting down himself and taking a cupcake as well. “You were real determined, I could tell even despite how tired you were. And then you became harder to contact, even if we have texted and such.”

Maybe she had been helping. Had that been part of the reason why Faustite had been willing to approach Order at all? Or was he simply so desperate that his hatred of them as a group had stopped mattering?

Of course, he wasn’t sure if Faustite had been fully convinced to purify, yet.

He took a bite of the cupcake, buying himself another moment before he responded, “I’ve been okay. The last little bit has some with some really unexpected things, is all.”

That was, somehow, still an understatement.

“He is, isn’t he?” said Sadie, sinking her teeth past the frosting and into the cake itself, which had a texture that was soft as a cloud but just solid enough to make it feel like food instead of air. “I’ve been trying to bake some with him so we can, um, reconnect a little? And it’s been nice, but I think it’s going to be a long time before I’m making anything like this.”

If she had a passion for baking, it would probably be different. As it was, she was mostly using it as a social thing.

Besides, that had all been put on hold too, with everything else that was going on. It was good to know that if she got busy, Viatrix could help look out for her brother.

“So, okay. I’ll tell him,” she said, “Or you could always go to his bakery. He’d like that.”

He did, after all, love cats.

There were a lot of things that she could say to Ignacio about what had happened while she’d been a little radio-silent. There were facts she could have told him, the stories about what had happened with Faustite. She could have told him that Faustite couldn’t seem to see her when she had her aspect active, or that he so far had been willing to trade with her for energy.

She could have gone a little deeper, told him what she made of all of that. She could have told him that Faustite did not like being denied what he wanted, be he did like youma, more than he liked just about anything else.

Instead she listened, perking up a little. “Unexpected?” she asked.

“It is his passion, isn’t it?” mused Viatrix, glancing up thoughtfully. “I think that’s why he’s so good at it! Kinda like the resident dad here– I’m glad you two are working together on things though, cooking is a good bonding activity.”

She swallowed again, before stating with a smattering of giggles, “Maybe I can convince him to give me some.”

Viatrix was absolutely willing to pop in on her charges at any time! She liked to keep track of the people she had awakened and helped reach a higher power. It felt like what she was supposed to do as a Mauvian, sure, but she also just generally felt responsible for the people she had pulled into this world. Viatrix wanted to make sure they thrived.

She wanted to make sure Ignacio thrived too, but to be honest, his increasing stress was also a bit amusing. Viatrix glanced up to the way he bit his bottom lip when asked about the unexpected comment directly, and did not do anything to help him recover from it. Consider this a long-term revenge for sticking her in the position where she was stuck explaining what Richard and Ignacio had been arguing about to Luke and Safira–

Ignacio ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah. Just working with someone who might be a new purification candidate is all.”

Viatrix watched him, saying nothing.

“Not really someone I ever expected to approach me, honestly.”

That was, somehow, still an understatement.

“If you play the part of the cute cat enough, he’ll give you sweets,” said Sadie, because she wasn’t sure if she could have called herself close to her brother before they’d started the baking, but she knew he had a soft spot for the cats. “Well, as long as he knows you’re actually a Mauvian and it’s not going to make you sick, but I think he’ll remember you after everything. Or you could just buy the cupcakes, that always works too.”

This was said absentmindedly, but more of her attention was on Ignacio as she repositioned herself slightly on her floor.

There was really only one thing to ask. She wasn’t about to start making assumptions about why he looked so tense, just talking about someone wanting to purify.

“Plenty of the awful ones want out eventually,” she said, her voice soft as soft. She shrugged, too. “Your sister did.”

“What?” came a muffled voice from a few rooms over. “Also, did someone say cupcakes?”

Then there were footsteps, and then there was a pink-haired girl in panda themed pajamas coming into the entryway. The footsteps got faster when she saw that there were, in fact, cupcakes. Purple ones, too, which made it more exciting. She was sprinting down the hall, and then she slid into a seat next to Sadie, grabbing a cupcake on the way over.

“Yesssss,” she said, biting into it. “Also, hi.”

Sadie didn’t seem too flustered by this. Her good eye stayed on Igacio. “So, who is it?” she asked.

“I can play cute cat,” hummed Viatrix thoughtfully, under her breath and to herself as she noticed the conversation had noticeably shifted to Ignacio, “do also have a civilian guise that won’t set off the auric alarms of everyone in a hundred mile radius. Could use that.” Of course, Viatrix was exaggerating, but there was a small bit of bitterness related to the fact that she couldn’t really stay in her preferred form. Not on Earth, anyway.

Not important. She’d figure out how exactly to get cupcakes later. For now–

Sadie wasn’t wrong, necessarily. He didn’t think he agreed with the plenty–experience taught him that many of them were content to continue following a malignant force. But enough of them did leave that it wasn’t an entire impossibility. Enough of one that.

Well.

The subject of the conversation came in herself, and Ignacio offered a sheepish, “Hi Livie,” relieved that she was momentarily distracted by cupcakes but knowing it was just that: a distraction. Her brain whipped around topics as fast as his did, and Sadie wasn’t going to let this one go, either.

Honestly, they’d probably be happy about it, overall. Probably even Livie, considering how she had been effectively blowing up Sadie’s proverbial phone about his worries about her being near Faustite in the first place. Encke knew they were working together to at least some degree.

He sighed and decided to join the set of people sitting in the entryway, picking up another cupcake.

“It’s complicated,” he warned, because this wasn’t quite as simple as someone in deep deciding that it was bad and they needed to get out, “but a certain man of fire may be looking to extinguish it.”

Viatrix’s mouth hung open.

There was only so much that could get Livie distracted from really yummy sweets, but this? Yeah. She froze, halfway through a bite, her eyes going wide in that sparkly, excited way. She swallowed the rest without chewing it, slammed the rest of the cupcake down on the floor out of the way in its little wrapper, and threw herself at Sadie in a tackle-hug while making a high-pitched squealing noise.

Sadie took all this in stride, calmly wrapping an arm around Livie, who then sat right back up, pointing towards Ignacio.

“See I told you!” she told him. “I. Told. You. You were all like, ‘oh no he’s a lost cause forget it,’ but look! There’s hope for everyone, see?” A second passed, and then she added, “And that means you can stop being weird about Albite and the others, ‘kay thanks bye.”

She turned to look at Sadie without really letting go of her. “What happened? What did you say to him? Or is it just, like, ‘cause he’s sick?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” said Sadie, who of the two of them was the one who seemed a little more surprised by this development, but she hardly looked shaken. Her smile was there, soft, and getting bigger. “It wasn’t me. Well, um, not all me. I was making progress,” she said, looking somewhere generally in Ignacio’s direction without having to go for deep eye contact, “Like I said. I figured out how to keep him from hurting me, and then we were talking a little, but about smaller things. I didn’t think we were quite at that point, not yet.”

She had thought that they might have been able to get there, unlike Encke, who hadn’t had any faith at all that Faustite might be able to make a different choice for himself, but she also knew that when people were in deep, things took time.

She glanced at Livie.

It either took time or it took something big shifting.

“Did something happen?” she asked. “How bad is it?”

The squealing tackle hug didn't take Ignacio by any actual surprise but it did make him minutely jump nevertheless as he watched Livie and Sadie. He had a sense this was going to be the reaction. Especially from Livie, honestly. His first thought was that she was never going to let him hear the end of it and she already wasn't.

He did not have any hope for Albite, even still.

Viatrix was looking at him with enough suspicion that he felt some relief that he didn't have to temper everyone's excitement.

"Does Arra know?"

"Told him first," murmured Ignacio to Viatrix, before shifting his gaze to look to Livie and Sadie. "It's not so much that there's hope for everyone. He's not looking at it as purification and was very insistent he's just looking to get rid of the youma. Offering to help both because he's tugging on my heartstrings somehow," because he was wondering what trippy dream he had stepped into even still, "and because if we can convince him to permanently let go of chaos he'd be free, not dying by means out of his control, and no longer a threat to us. He can heal from it, perhaps."

The wording was specific. Youma ridding, not purification. The problem was for Faustite, they both came as one.

"But yeah, something happened. He didn't need to tell me what's going on though he did anyway, indirectly. Youma half is killing him. He's coughing, he's weak, think I spotted him scoop up some ashes. He's feeling hopeless, literally trying not to die."

"Strong of you not to tell him to just go do it, then," murmured Viatrix. To be honest? She remembered that day she saved Basiluzzo from him. She was uncertain she would have been that much of the better person.

Something to think about.

"Don't think he would have come to me or anyone else if he wasn't dying. He's not talking like he wants to leave, and he's already walked away from it on me once.

"I do think there's a chance, though, that he could be brought to wanting the whole thing."

If he had once… maybe they could do it again.

Livie let Ignacio talk, but eventually cut in with a, “Yeah, I knew he was dying. I didn’t know he was desperate enough to not die that he was gonna ask Order for help, but I’m cool with that.” For one thing, it’d mean that she was gonna get to point out to her brother that he’d been wrong.

“I mean, we’ll get to be twinsies!”

She took half a breath, looked around at the others one by one, and then added, to clarify, “You know, ‘cause, I was also gonna die if I didn’t leave the Negaverse when I did.”

Yeah, she understood that it wasn’t the same situation or anything. She’d betrayed the Negaverse and was about to get executed, he was slowly burning alive from the inside. She’d figured out that the Negaverse was evil, Faustite didn’t wanna think of purification as purification.

Still, leaving the Negaverse was leaving the Negaverse. Surviving was surviving. So, like. Twins!

“Well, you’ll be twins if he wants out,” said Sadie, soft as she possibly could, because she did not want to pop the bubbles of hope that seemed to be coming off of the pink-haired girl in waves. She didn’t want to pop the bubbles in her own chest, either.

This was progress. It wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t anything like that, but it was so much better of a turn than things could have been.

“He’ll have to purify, no matter what he calls it,” she said. “To get the youma out. But,” her lips pressed thin as she looked for the right words. “I don’t think he’d stay away from Chaos? I don’t think he’d even try, after everything we’ve talked about. Five minutes after we saved him, he’d be corrupted again, with a strong body and a nice sword and a husband who he’d talk to about how idiotic Order is, keeping their enemy alive.”

This was a little harsh for Sadie, so she clarified, “Um, he really likes the word idiot.”

“Purify the husband!” Livie cut in. She giggled after she said it, but she was only half joking. “See? It would solve like, all the problems.”

“Maybe,” said Sadie, because it would probably help. “But, what I was actually thinking is that we’re going to have to do a lot of work, in those five minutes when his mind is free. See if we can keep him from slipping away.”

Seiana_ZI
PostPosted: Fri Feb 24, 2023 7:41 pm

Ignacio fidgeted. The twinsies comment was cute, honestly, and not wrong. They were twins in one perspective, in that they would both be fleeing the Negaverse to avoid death. Sadie, though, pointed out the operative word there. Or words, really. If he wanted to. If. Faustite was reinforcing the concept of ridding the youma so hard in their conversation that he knew that Faustite wasn’t at the point of wanting to purify, even if he had once been years ago. It made him worry about the prospects.

But to be honest, he couldn’t withhold what had allowed Encke to continue to survive from Faustite. Encke wasn’t going to hold back.

He knew why Livie was citing the husband, he did. And she wasn’t wrong, but–

“If we could convince his husband and all the people he’s attached to, I think that’d not only help but it would also be miraculous.”

Did he think they were incapable of miracles? No, not exactly, but he was also tempered in his expectation of them. He didn’t get the impression from anything he knew of Albite that he would ever even consider leaving. He didn’t get the impression that Faustite would dump any considerable effort into getting him to do so, either. Honestly, he might even consider the opposite. If Albite really figured that was where he belonged, according to the database entries, would his husband disrupt that? Especially if Faustite didn’t or barely wanted to let go of Chaos’ hold on him?

Not that he knew how either party was ultimately going to respond to the news. Faustite’s reaction was negative if sullen. He had no idea how Albite would react.

One problem at a time.

“We’re gonna have a lot of work to do, I think.” Ignacio leaned forward, the cupcakes entirely forgotten–even if his guardian cat hadn’t forgotten them, swapping to her humanoid civilian guise so she could grab another. “Not just in those moments his mind is free, but also leading up to those moments. It’s hard to rid yourself of chaos even briefly if you’re still attached to it, I think.”

Purification couldn’t be forced. He knew that via the stories Metis had told him of Iris trying to force Labyrithite. He knew that via the fact that not all of his classmates had survived being youmaified. He knew that just via experience of dealing with purifications over the years. If an attachment to chaos existed, it wouldn’t happen. Would just wanting rid of the youma do it if he still wanted to keep everything else he had?

“So we’ll have to convince him he wants to leave and make sure it’s not an exit by death in the process."

“Hey, the Albite thing isn’t really a joke,” Livie said. Ignacio might have been so much in serious business mode that he was all tensed up and not even focusing on the sweets, but she was definitely not at that point. She licked some icing off her fingers while she leaned against Sadie like her taller friend was a slightly pointy pillow. “Like, it’s not a priority, considering the situation, but I don’t think it’s that weird to think that if Faustite leaves, there might be some ripple effects. Uh.”

Her cheeks went just a little bit pink. The others could assume it was because she was thinking about Albite, that was fine.

“I mean, I think with my stuff, there might be some chain reactions happening? I think I can get some people to follow me, and Faustite seems, like, really important.”

If she could save people with the power of love, then Faustite would also be able to! Which, like, that was something she was going to have to talk to Ignacio about, too, but now really didn’t seem like the time to go into detail about her love life.

“But anyway, Faustite-”

“Is a half-youma,” said Sadie, all at once, and Livie went quiet so that she could chew on her words.

“I try not to think of anyone as broken, these days. I try not to be prejudiced against even the people who are deepest in Chaos, to think of them as less human, but, um-” She ran a finger against the scars on her face. The skin felt tight. That had been her first encounter with a half-youma general, and those marks went deeper than the skin.

“I’m not always, um. Perfect at it,” she said, and glanced at the entryway floor. “There’s something very sick about his soul. Something very sick about his mind.”

“He’s a jerk. You can just say it,” said Livie. “He is weird and also gross and also mean.”

Sadie shook her head, because that wasn’t what she meant, not really. “So I don’t think it’s a bad idea to focus on just the necessity of it, right now? To talk about getting away from Chaos and not just the youma, yes, but, um, we can talk about the benefits and why to stay once he’s here.”

“Find him a cool Order husband,” said Livie with a grin. “You know, to start, before we get the others purified. That’ll be the trick.” She reached for another cupcake. “But, you’re gonna have to step up your matchmaking game, ‘cause you still haven’t even found me anyone better than Albite.”
