Lost In Translation

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Tendaji is a rich and diverse land filled with many different cultures and languages. While most travelers are fortunate enough to speak a common language, sometimes one might find themselves in a village where they can't communicate with the local population. How do you manage? Do you find someone to translate, or fumble along?

[ Tendaji has many different languages that the locals speak, and sometimes you might find yourself in a village or town where no one is speaking your language. Use this prompt to explore that miscommunication - maybe thinking about how hard it is to get your message across. Or connecting with a stranger who is helping you translate so you can make that purchase you need. What happens when everything is lost in translation? ]

Everyday that Mina spent in Matori her grasp of the local language was growing. She'd been doing her best to learn from Ninaeleth and her family, which meant conversing more with the community around them and it was inevitable that an incident would occur. Mina was, after all, a foreigner with a language that didn't sync up with the local dialect and shopping could be...problematic, at best.

"Spit it out already, girl! If you aren't going to buy something then get moving." The stall owner glared down at the smaller Hapuna, but Mina wouldn't budge. She was just as frustrated, if not more so, because she knew what she wanted she just couldn't say it.

"It's...It's long and-" She tried to make the shape, but he just rolled his eyes at her. Well, she wasn't going to take that! "Stop that! If you would just listen-"

"I'm trying to, but I can barely understand every third word out of your mouth!"

He was pretty decent at most common languages in Matori to a certain extent, he wasn't neccesssarily fluid in all of them but he could hold his own. He liked talking to all kinds of people when he wasn't disappearing into the forest for huge lengths of time hunting and learning about the natural world and all it had to offer.

What he couldn't handle was rudeness. Looking over at the noise he saw his Mom's friend Mina, it looked like the shop keeper had woken up on the wrong side of the cart.

"Hey Mina, can I help?" He had some free time before he had to go make sure his kids were not ripping apart the village together.

"Oh, Thallassa!" As surprised as she was to see him Mina was also extremely grateful. Her cheeks burned from the frustration and embarrassed of this situation, but the teenager was holding her own. At least, for now. "I needed to replace a few things and I can't think of the right word. I've been trying, but..." She cast a glare toward the shopkeeper who met her glare with one of his own.

"She's blocking my stand is what she's doing. Keeps making weird gestures without actually getting to the point."

"I just need a..." She stretched her hands out and made a 'cracking' motion with her hand, "...mine is broken and I can't work without one. It's a...the long things that snap when you use them. For animals?" Mina knew the word for in her tongue, but saying it here kept escaping her.

"Hi Mina, hmmm, sounds like you are looking for a whip." He supplied the correct word in the problem language and tried to calm the cranky vendor down.

"That is all she was asking for, she was trying her best." Someone had evidently woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

In a quiet undertone he said, "Don't mind her Mina, she is just cranky, wasn't your fault I'm sure, everyone has bad days."

He was glad he had happened upon them. No need to get all bent out of shape over such a small matter. He eyed the vendor. Strange.

He wasnt' doing much, he would hang out with her for a while and make sure there were no other issues. She might help him out too, there were a few kahi vendors and he didn't know much of their languages either.
