Takes place late January 2023. “You’ve done a great job, Dev. Really. I’m impressed,” Sessrumnir said as he stood with Devyn in the Hall of the Ancients, admiring the work that Alastor had obviously put into restoring everything. It seemed like so long ago that they fought for this place to be freed from Chaos, when in reality it was only a few months.
As much as he liked looking around at the grandness of the hall, at the artwork and architecture, it was difficult for Sessrumnir to not smile as he watched Alastor meander about, showing him everything.
And this was a good distraction. The anniversary of his father’s death had just passed, and maybe Devyn knew that now would be a good time to give Michael something else to think about. Atticus seemed to be able to tell something was wrong, or maybe Elliot told him that this was around the time his father’s starseed had been taken, and his death soon followed. The poor kid was sweet, trying to make him feel better in various ways. Making sure he had breakfast ready, or his chores done, or just helping out more around the house.
Michael felt bad, and he tried to suck it up and prove that he was okay. He didn’t want to ruin a kid’s week by being mopey.
He didn’t want to ruin his husband’s week by being mopey either.
“You should remind me to take a look at the fountain before we leave. I might be able to get it running again if I know what is blocking it,” he offered, because why not restore everything to its proper glory?

“Do you think you can?” Alastor asked, but it was a request and not a question; he had absolute faith in Michael in all things, he just didn’t want to burden him with a list of repairs. Not that he hadn’t made a list of things he wanted to ask him about, or Soleiyu, now that it was safe for the both of them to be there.
Although, he was quite a bit biased in preferring Sessrumnir’s company.
“I had to shut off a lot of the vanity waterways a while ago, the river got too dangerous and I’d wake up to flooding inside. Only, I know the pipes took some damage, too. I’ll show you where they connect to the river later, if there’s a block I’m sure it’s over there.”
His fingers were laced with Sessrumnir’s as he pulled him to another part of the Hall.
The improvements were uncanny; before, the Hall had seemed desolate and dark–little more than a beautiful crypt. Now, sunlight filtered through the colored glass and the rooms were so bright that he didn’t need candles down here. There were still signs of half finished projects, but he’d organized everything.
By the door, boxes of supplies were neatly arranged. Devyn hadn’t given up hope that there might be people on his world, and if they found their way to the Hall he wanted them to have the means to take care of themselves. Food from Earth, some medicine, some clothes. He’d cleaned a few bedrooms out, just in case, and left notes in his native language where they could easily find them.
Earlier, he’d excitedly told Sessrumnir about how the trees in the forest were producing sap again so he’d set up some buckets to collect it. The storms had been rough, but now that there was sunlight again, the forest seemed in fresh bloom. He was looking forward to making more candles, even if they weren’t needed anymore.
The Hall had seen many repairs over the past few months; he’d reinforced windows and doors, properly fixed the roof; the wall surrounding the Hall had taken its fair share of damage but he’d cleaned up the debris and fixed it up again.
And cleaned.
Devyn had cleaned so much.
The windows were clear, the rugs were spotless, and every ornate gold furnishing had been properly polished. He’d dusted away cobwebs and age, and had even set aside some furniture to be upholstered and embellished.
Every piece of artwork had been cleaned up, though Devyn had said he’d like to bring Claire up some time to get her opinions on the pieces and if any of them should be brought down. They’d spent a lot of time preparing and restoring Percy’s pieces, and even though the gallery hadn’t even opened yet he was already planning for more.
“But it’s by the garden, I’ll have to show you what’s growing. I don’t even know, to be honest. It’s like all the seeds just decided to sprout. They don’t look like potatoes or mushrooms, so it’ll be exciting. I’ll have to find some old recipe books and see if I can’t make you something. I haven’t gone to Arista for more than a quick visit.”
There was a sadness in his voice that he covered quickly just by nature of talking so much; Arista had been such a vibrant town before it fell. He’d been so sure that people would migrate back after the storms, but the town was still empty, and badly battered by the years.
“Oh, and the Oak Tree,” he perked up, “Did I tell you that it’s got little buds on it?” He had, twice already. “I think, come Spring, it might get leaves. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I think I already do. It’s beautiful during the day, the light catches the gold in the bark. Oh, but at night, it lights up. It’s beautiful, we’ll have to stay late one night. There’s so much I want to show you. I cleaned my room up a bit, too. It’s still a bit dusty, I’ve got so much in there. If we don’t finish seeing everything, I’ll just bring you back again soon.”
He squeezed Sessrumnir’s hand; he knew this time of year was hard for him, but Michael was not always good with speaking about the things that hurt him. All Devyn could do was be there for him, and let him know that whatever he needed, he’d have.

Michael knew pain, physically and emotionally, but he knew it wasn’t fair for him to even imagine how painful it must be for Devyn to not know if anyone survived the Chaos on his world. Over the years, Michael had grown more pessimistic about things, but for Devyn he was willing to hold onto that hope with him. He encouraged him to bring supplies and offered to get extra things that survivors might need should they make their way to the Hall. There was no hesitation in offering to buy whatever extra things Devyn might need -- not for himself, but for others. Although Michael obviously liked to spoil his husband whenever he could.
He could hear the sadness in Devyn’s voice, but didn’t say anything about it. Michael would have been a hypocrite to force Devyn to talk about things when it was difficult to talk about his own sadness. Still, he was grateful for Devyn’s company and patience and kindness, as always.
“Wait,” Sessrumnir said as Alastor squeezed his hand. He liked listening to Devyn. His voice was calming, even if he felt the need to talk and talk, it didn’t matter to Michael. Devyn had a voice that didn’t grate on him like so many others would.
When he had Alastor’s attention, he gave his hand a little tug, pulling him close to him again so he could steal a quick kiss.
“Okay, I’m good,” he smiled, hoping Devyn knew how much he appreciated him. It was bad enough that he was worrying Atticus, but he knew Devyn was probably worrying over the both of them.
“We’ll have time to see everything. Even if it’s not this time, then we’ll just plan another. I would like to see the Oak Tree. I haven’t had a chance to see much of the one at Sessrumnir, but I don’t think it glows. I guess that’s what happens with it borrowing energy from your world’s Core,” Sessrumnir hummed.
It was poetic. Maybe just a coincidence. But for the tree that was planted with Percy to grow into something so large, and to protect the Core itself? Maybe it was just a kind of symbiotic relationship of getting energy in exchange for protection, but Michael liked to think that maybe it was a little bit of Percy’s doing.

Alastor was already beaming from the kiss and a fresh little smile planted itself on his face afterwards. Not having to worry about time was a relief he couldn’t quite have to put into words. He didn’t spend his time now wondering how much longer he could go on for; now he just thought about how much more he had.
And, of course he liked talking about the Oak Tree, and the Core, and Percy. Michael was always so patient with him. The orb around his neck glowed brightly today and it was easy to tell that Alastor was in a pleasant, energetic mood. He always felt refreshed on his World.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” he asked. “I’m very proud of it.” Very proud of Percy, too. He couldn’t look at it and not think that it was Percy’s tree.
Percy’s way of protecting him, and his world.
“I used to think, when it got big enough to have acorns, I’d take those and plant them all over my world, and everywhere I went. I got it in my head that it would be like taking Percy to those places, and letting a little piece of him see all of it. But it’s never given me any. I suppose it’s been a long time since my world was healthy, though. It’s nice to see so many things growing. The weeds are horrible. I spent almost a whole day trying to clean everything up and they’re getting bad again. I’ll have to figure out something for the long term.”
He sighed, as if this was such trouble for him, but he was still smiling. He couldn't fault his world for being alive.
“The water’s gone down so much, it looks nice again. I bet you’d have a lot of fun on the river if we could get a boat down here. There are probably still some in Arista, if they haven’t rotten away. But I suspect they’d need a lot of love and care to get them up and running again.” He tilted his head so he could look at Sessrumnir. “If you’d be interested. I don’t see myself going on the water on my own.”

“I wouldn’t want you on the water on your own,” Sessrumnir reassured him, but it was clear that he’d already perked up a little at the mention of fixing up a boat. It wasn’t a secret that he loved being on the water.
“Thank you, Dev. I’d be very interested. Especially if it gave us another way to get around. Careful, I’m already thinking of all the things I could bring here to fix things up.” He knew Devyn wouldn’t mind, and he appreciated the offer. And he only slightly suspected that it was to help keep him distracted from everything else.
“It’s very beautiful. You should be proud,” he agreed with a smile, charmed by Devyn’s good mood and of course by his smile. “If the Oak Tree does start growing acorns, I’d like to help you. If that’s okay? We could make sure any tree we plant has plenty of space to grow. And we’ll want to check on them every now and then. But don’t worry about being on the water with me. I won’t let anything happen to you,” he promised. He would have Devyn wear a lifejacket if he knew he needed to take his eyes off him.
“If the weeds keep giving you trouble, we can bring something to put under the soil where you don’t want weeds to grow. It’s like a burlap barrier. Or we can just spend our day in the gardens, weeding. We could bring a picnic for when we needed a break.”

“Oh, I like that,” Alastor answered quickly, but he’d made no secret that he loved picnics, and any excuse to bask in the sunlight. Or spend time with Michael. The water, he was less enthusiastic about, but he’d seen the way Sessrumnir looked like he’d perked up a bit.
“If anyone’s boats survived, it would have been Virgil’s.” He’d talked about him before, an old friend. Most of Devyn’s friends existed when Percy did; after that, he didn’t make many more. “I haven’t been keeping track of time very well, but a good few years back–before Arista emptied out–one of his was still going strong. He built it himself. There were a few others, but none as old as his. None as pretty, either. He’d be happy to have someone like you taking care of it, I think. He’d probably say that a boat like his wasn’t meant to stay locked up in storage. Something like that belongs in the water.”
Alastor was still bustling with energy, and he swung Sessrunir’s hand just a bit as they walked. He’d given him a good tour of what he’d done inside the Hall, and now he was guiding them back to his room. The dark hallways were illuminated with candles that must have been changed recently; they all burned brightly. Some of the hallways were visibly dusty, but Alastor had cleared the pathway from the lobby to his room. It was a massive task, between all of the ceilings that needed dusting, and the rugs, and the tapestries that needed to be shaken out. It still needed so much work, but the air smelled fresher and there was something a bit lively about the dark hallways.
His room wasn’t so far away, but the walk was still a few minutes at the pace they were going.
“I’ll check and see if it’s there when I visit again, if it is I’ll clear out some space so you can take a look at it. I’m lucky to have you help, you’re so clever. I’d appreciate any assistance, you know that. Your skill and company are very welcome, and very wanted. And I’d like to show you Alastor, too. So if I’m going to be visiting anywhere, of course I want you with me. We’d get around much faster with a boat. Without any horses, it’s a bit of a long walk to get around. Not that I’d mind if it meant spending time with you. Atticus might enjoy it a little less, but I’m hoping I’ll have something figured out. I think it’s safe to bring him up here, he’s been so patient. I know he’ll enjoy it more if we don’t have to spend all day walking, but we’ll make it work. I’ll carry him on my back if I need to. Oh, that offer’s open to you, too. Or my arms, since you fit so nicely.”

Michael laughed, but it was quiet and almost certainly as a way to cover up feeling a little flustered by Devyn’s flirting. Not that it was a lot of flirting at the moment, but he always felt like he was out of place in Devyn’s arms. He was practically the same size Devyn was, if not a little broader in his shoulders. While he enjoyed being carried around, he didn’t want Devyn to suddenly decide it wasn’t something he wanted to do, which would just lead to disappointment.
Percy was a much better fit in Devyn’s arms. Atticus was smaller, still. Certainly not as cumbersome as someone who was six foot two and mostly muscle.
“I think some time soon Atticus wanted him and Elliot to look at bicycles to bring with them to their Wonders, as a way to get around easier. We could always bring a set here, too. We could bring them with us on the boat, and then when we needed to get off, we'd have extra transportation. It wouldn’t be as comfortable as being carried by you, but it’ll be faster than walking.”
It was something to think of at least. He would have to make sure Devyn learned how to ride a bike, if he didn’t already know. But he had good core strength, so Michael had little doubt that he’d be able to learn to balance quickly.
“I’m sorry I haven’t been here to help more. Once school is out and the after school programs end, I’ll be able to help more. You’ve done a lot on your own. I don’t mind helping by doing basic cleaning if it means spending more time with you. I bet Atticus wouldn’t mind sweeping up some dust if it meant spending more time with you, too.”

“I don’t know how I got so lucky,” Alastor said, quite proudly. “Between you and Atticus, I’m rather spoiled. It’s nice. There’s still plenty to do, I just wanted to make sure it was safe before I brought him up here again. You, I know you could take care of yourself if you had to, but I just wanted to make sure he’d be safe.”
Atticus had been through enough already, Devyn wasn’t going to add to that by negligence. He’d been here for long enough that he was confident there were no lurking shadows waiting to pounce. So far, it had just been him.
He didn’t comment on the strange loneliness that came with a rejuvenating world; it was silent, outside of the simple sounds of nature. Water, wind. Trees rustling, the sound of himself working.
He’d be glad for company, and he was happy to have Michael here, now.
“You know you have nothing to apologize for though, right? You do so much back on Earth. And I’ve been taking care of these things by myself for a while now, this isn’t any trouble for me. Although, I wish I could get to Sessrumnir more often. Feels unfair for me to spend so much time here and not give as much attention there. I know it’s your Wonder, it’s just, well. You know I care about it too.” He looked apologetic, briefly, and squeezed Sessrumnir’s hand. “I wish the doorway worked. That old portal between my room and Percy’s. I’d head over there and clean and straighten up some, too. If you didn’t mind. Maybe one of these days you can take me there early in the morning while you and the boys are at school, I can do some cleaning and be back in time to make dinner.”

Michael didn’t say it, but he was pretty certain that he was the lucky one. For Devyn to take the time needed to not only get to know Michael, but to be patient with him and let him figure things out on his own without being pressured? It was more than nice. It was necessary for Michael to feel like things could get better. He hadn’t needed to spend the weekend in bed since Devyn moved in, and then Atticus as well. And it wasn’t just because he had things to do, but because he wanted to spend time with them. Well, when they both weren’t out doing things on their own, or with others.
“Sessrumnir is as much as yours as it is mine,” he promised, looking back at Alastor when he gave him that look. Devyn had nothing to apologize for either, and although he didn’t say it, he certainly looked like he felt that way.
“Let me take a look at that portal of yours. It sounds like it’s beyond my realm of expertise, but if we get an idea and talk to Soleiyu about it, maybe he can help get it up and running again. But I wouldn’t mind taking you in the morning if you’d like. I feel guilty about leaving you at home with nothing to do there, anyway. And I haven’t been able to get to Sessrumnir as much as I would like.”

At this, Devyn laughed. “Don’t feel guilty, I find plenty of things to get into. And I’ve done a good job staying out of trouble, I think! I’ve got a whole list of all the restaurants I want to take you to. And I’ve gotten lost on my runs so many times that I know how to get home from almost anywhere, now. And I’ve taken classes, and I’ve got so many projects back home, too. I hardly ever feel like there’s nothing to do.” He squeezed his hand, but was visibly pleased with the offer to go to Sessrumnir.
“If there’s anything special you want me to focus on, I will. Otherwise I’ll just get a head start on cleaning. I can show you where the other side of that portal is, too. I don’t know how Perce made it before,” he admitted. “He was smart, like you. He had to get some special pieces to make it work, I know that much. I don’t know if things like that exist anymore, or how to make them even if we had the materials, but I’ll show you.”
He tugged him along still, effortlessly navigating the lengthy corridors to his room. There were twists and turns but he hardly had to even look where he was going; his feet knew the way.
“It’s just a two way gate,” he continued. “Back and forth, no different than stepping over any other threshold. Percy was working on something more precise, but he didn’t get a chance to finish. They were going to be portable, he’d keep one and I’d keep one, and no matter where we were, it would get us to the other’s world. I think he was always worried I’d find myself in a position where I needed to get somewhere safe and wouldn’t be able to make it out to get there. You know, like stuck at the bottom of a cave or something.”
They’d reached his door, and he pushed it open with one hand. It was clean, but then he’d always done a decent job of keeping this space looking decent. He’d spent a lot of time here over the past few years, he needed it to be safe. A few candles burned, and Alastor seemed to have no concern that they’d catch anything on fire and spread. It was a bit chill in the room, but there was wood by the fireplace. The lack of windows meant you had to bring your own light in, but he didn’t seem to mind.
Devyn had always liked shiny things, and naturally he’d amassed a great collection in his room. He’d brought Michael here before, but the things on his dresser had changed, and it looked like the trinkets might have been moved around. He tended to go through things more now; he was always looking for little things to bring home. Atticus was still making jewelry, and Devyn was glad that his hoard of broken pieces could get some attention. Between his projects back on Earth and Atticus’, they could go through plenty, but Devyn didn’t seem like he was going to run out of things anytime soon.
His closet door was open–he’d been going through, looking for things to repair or tailor. The bed was made, and the room smelled sweet–fragrant, and fresh, thanks to the bouquet of mostly-fresh picked flowers in a vase by the bedside.
That he then moved to and lifted the glass, presenting them to Sessrumnir.
“And these are for you. I picked them the last time I was here. They open up more after you cut them or I’d have brought them back with me.”
There were a little over twenty flowers that looked like they could have been dahlias if not for the range in color consisting only of various shades of blue and teal. The glass was clear but had a thick gold bow tied around it. It was silky, as much so as the petals. The water was clear, but a gold dust powder swirled and caught the light when he moved it, and upon closer inspection the petals seemed to have the same tiny gold flecks.

Sessrumnir followed along, letting Alastor lead him to his room through the maze of halls and passageways. Inside Devyn’s room, he glanced around to admire the space. He liked seeing Devyn’s creativity, especially when he was in a place he considered home for so long. Michael knew it must be strange or even difficult to call any place on Earth home, but it was easy to remind himself that no matter where Devyn wanted to go, no matter how new or unknown it was, it would still be home for Michael.
He was busy being distracted by how the candlelight reflected off some of the shiny trinkets on the dresser when Alastor presented him the vase of flowers, to which he blinked at and stared in surprise as he reached out to take it from him.
Devyn was always thinking of things like that. Flowers or little sparkly rocks or other gifts. Michael felt unworthy of the attention, but still craved the affection offered to him.
“They’re beautiful, Dev,” he said quietly, looking over the shades of cool colors and then how the gold seemed to sparkle in the light. “Thank you. They remind me of your eyes a little,” he hummed as he carefully set the vase back down.
Once his hand was free, he carefully reached out to place his hand against Devyn’s cheek so he could lean close to kiss him. Hopefully he wasn’t doing too much kissing, but Devyn didn’t seem to mind.
And it wasn’t as though they could afford to get distracted when they still had that portal to take a look at.

Given the circumstances, Alastor probably could have afforded to make time for plenty of distractions, and kisses from Sessrumnir–from Michael. He took a good moment to return the kiss, and it was only when Sessrumnir was leaning back that he did the same. “I’m afraid Alastor is a bit biased in its colors. But I was happy enough to see these growing, I haven’t seen color in a while. Of course, I say that now but I know the next time I look everything will be overrun with pretty little weeds, too. After the boys finish tending to their gardens on the Moon, maybe I can ask them to help me tend to mine here.”
He still seemed quite pleased by the kiss, and added, “If I’d had more time I would have tipped the edges of the petals in gold, but I’ll save that for a rainy day. I hope some of these grow in gray, but they’re finicky.” Not enough to daunt him, though.
Alastor raised his hand to rest over Sessrumnir’s for a moment. “Any time I see something pretty, I want to share it with you. I can’t help it.” Of course, it wasn’t just pretty things. Anything interesting, or odd, or funny; Devyn couldn’t help himself. He wanted to lavish Michael in gifts and he wanted to share everything with him.
“If there’s ever anything you want to see around Alastor, you’re welcome to it. I’ll take you anywhere you want to go, to see anything you like.”

Sessrumnir laughed, and then made a face, despite being obviously amused. “Oh, gray flowers? I don’t know, that sounds kind of dull,” he smiled. Sure, gray was his favorite color, but that didn’t mean he wanted to see a field of dull flowers. Not when they could be beautiful teals and blues and golds.
He brushed his thumb over Alastor’s cheek, not daring to move his hand while Devyn’s hand was over his. Even if it was only for a moment.
“Thank you for sharing your world with me. Thank you for sharing your life with me. I want to see everything, I want to go everywhere. I haven’t felt excited to travel in such a long time. I joined the Navy to travel the world, but… it’s been difficult since…”
He paused, took a moment to take a breath and continued.
“Since the incident with my team. I’ve been too anxious to fly, which is the fastest way to travel on Earth,” he explained, although he knew Devyn knew all this already. He was just talking to shift his thoughts.
“But I want to show you everything, too. It’s not Alastor, but… Earth has some nice places, still.”

Bits and pieces of Michael’s life before Devyn felt few and far between, and he knew how hard it was for Michael to speak of some things. He had never pried. Asked, sometimes, but on a superficial level so Michael never felt like he had to answer.
Devyn never wanted more from him than what he wanted to give.
Whenever Michael offered a memory or thought or feeling, Devyn listened intently.
He laced his fingers with Sessrumnir’s even as he held his hand in place. “Traveling doesn’t have to be fast. You see more when you’re taking it slow. I like my feet on the ground, anyway. We don’t need to be in the sky to adventure. Although, there’s an island in the clouds that I’ve never made my way to.”
It wasn’t the first time Devyn had mentioned it, and it probably wouldn’t be the last.
But, for now, they had more than enough to do to keep them busy down here. On Alastor, on Earth, on Sessrumnir. Devyn didn’t think he’d ever get bored while he was with Michael.
“I haven’t traveled for fun in a long time, myself. When I was on the road before, it was always with a job in mind. I forgot how to live before I met you, you’ve opened my eyes to all the things I forgot I could do. So thank you for sharing your life with me. I think mine would be very empty without you. I think about how lucky I am to have you all the time, Michael. I don’t know who I might have become without you. But I’m happy now, and I’ve got you to thank. I’ll go anywhere you like, and I’ll be better off for it. You’re good for me. And I love you. Very much. I want to see all that Earth has to offer, but only as long as you’re there with me.”

Michael smiled, and then let out a small sigh as he pulled his hand away from Devyn’s face, but only so he could wrap it around Devyn’s shoulder instead and pulled him into a tight embrace.
“If anyone is lucky, it’s me. But I’ll do my best to not let you down. I love you, and you make me happy. It’s nothing compared to what you went through, but it’s been a while since I’ve been happy, too. I’m lucky to have you and Atticus.”
He just had to make sure he did everything in his power to protect them. The Reids as well, and the rest of his family and friends. He couldn’t afford to lose any more of them.
“I want to see your island in the clouds,” he said after a few moments. “I want to see places that you’ve never seen, experience it for the first time with you.” He knew he had a lot to work up to in order to handle flying in a plane, but surely there was a way to get to the rock in the sky without a helicopter or anything like that. Maybe.
“Before I get too distracted and start waxing poetic about how nice your hair smells, we should look at that portal of yours,” he said with a quiet laugh, loosening his hold on Devyn, but not quite pulling away. He didn’t want to move far from him unless he had to.
