A few hours after this encounter.“Watch what you’re doing! The paws are sensitive!”Tama yowled at the medic in the infirmary before biting him on the hand. Some poor lieutenant who probably had no experience treating a Mauvian and certainly had no incentive to do it now passed him off to a senshi who had healing magic. Clearly, the paw needed magical attention. That or the cat was just a bad patient. He’d reverted to his cat form sometime before nearly fainting in the infirmary. He’d given the medic quite a scare when he did it. Probably never seen a Mauvian in the flesh before. Either way, he’d treated the burns even if Tama wasn’t quite sure the lotion was actually getting to his skin through the fur. He was not impressed with the cat’s paw, either. Apparently, he’d burned it three times. That’s how he got handed to the senshi with the healing magic, chastised for biting and told if he came back they’d muzzle him before treatment. But even with all that, he wasn’t sure what hurt more: the physical pain or the emotional pain. However, with the actual wounds mostly handled his mind immediately went to the emotional wounds. His eyes were to the ground and the bandage on his paw as he walked not paying attention to where he was going or who he bumped into or really anything. If someone accidentally stepped on him, he wouldn’t care. He probably deserved it anyway. ☆

Life could've been going worse for Niter. Andesine had gotten him a job with a local theatre, and they gave him more hours and more pay, but he had to do more work. And that was exhausting for a long time — Niter felt like, for the first few weeks, all he did was work and sleep. His Elden Ring time was cut down substantially, which made for a moody and morose boy. But, as he slowly got used to it, he was able to start staying up for an hour or two after work.
He hated having to work that much, of course, but there was a benefit to that peace of mind .Though he'd gotten a final warning from his landlord, Niter had secured proof of income and promised to pay his owed rent in full by the end of the month. So far so good.
But he still felt like he needed to pay the Negaverse back for showing him a kindness like that. So, Niter had been burning the midnight oil — he'd been updating some Database submissions and trying to collate what he could of them so that an administrator could approve the more streamlined version later. He'd gotten pretty tired of that, though, and decided he'd probably be motivated to finish his work if he got a snack first.
Lucky for Tama, he was one of the people who looked at the floor as he walked, so Niter immediately spotted the half-baked feline walking towards him, even if the Mauvian didn't pay him any heed.
"Oh, um," Niter stammered, unsure of how to address this one. "Are you okay? Can I help you?" He crouched down to the cat's level, arms folded across his lap, as he looked the puffy friend over.

Was he okay? Did he look okay? Was there some other alternate reality where any of him could be possibly defined as okay? “I’m afraid I’m completely useless and can’t possibly be helped.” Tama said as he flopped on the floor a little too dramatically. “My nails have tar in them, my fur is a hot mess and I’m hung up on a human whose name I don’t even remember.”And then the tears he had fought back for as long as possible came as he pressed his face to the cold stone floor in a desperate furry heap of self-pity. ☆

Niter would've jumped out of his skin when he saw the little Mauvian fall over onto the ground. Who would do that to an adorable cat!! He needed help!! He needed love!! Niter just met the furry little guy, but he would kill everyone else and then himself if it meant keeping this Mauvian whose name he didn't know safe. Or at least cheering him up a little. It's only what cats deserved.
"Nonononowaitwaitwaitholdon," Niter stammered on, then stooped down to scoop up the fluffy puddle from the disgusting stone floor. "Oh, wait, um, I shouldn't have done that, I'm sorry, but —" He flushed.
"— I'm Niter, and I don't know your name, but. Um. We can get the tar out of your nails! And then get you…" He petered off as he realized the extent of the fur damage. It wasn't just dirty, it wasn't just mussed, it was also singed. Like kitty fell into a fire. Or got thrown into one? It begged the question of what happened, but was it too intrusive for Niter to ask?
"Let's, uh, go to my place. Wait, no, can't teleport. Where can I take you?"

Tama winced as the man picked him up. More than just his fur had been singed. Still, he didn’t resist. “It’s fine.” Tama practically buried himself in Niter’s feathery uniform. It beat walking on his bad paw. “I’m Tama. We can go to Mau HQ. Just hold me up to the star door and it’ll open.”He started to sob again. ☆

Niter wasn't sure which way was best for holding an injured Mauvian, but he settled for something like how one would hold a baby. Support the back, let the paws do whatever the paws wanted to do, and give Tama the option of resting his head if he needed it. The fuzzy friend seemed happy enough with his feathers, though.
"O-okay," Niter answered, a little frantic. He'd been by the Mauvian HQ a few times because there were cats in there, but he tried not to look like too much of a creep by revealing that he knew exactly where that was. Tama might start to question it. Might suspect him for being where he didn't belong.
"I think I know where that's at." He started backtracking the way he came, down crystal-lit, carpeted hallways and across the floating balconies that overlooked the lower, grander meeting areas. "So, what happened?"

“It’s….” Tama started before you hear what could only be the sound of the cat blowing his snotty little pink nose on your uniform. “It’s complicated. Why does it have to be so stupid and difficult and…” And then a long sob. “… complicated! And it’s all because that general had to go put his hands where they don’t ******** belong.”They got to the door. “It’ll scan my forehead star… if it can see it through the matted fur.” And one for heavy sob before the door to Mauvian HQ opened. ☆

"Oh, um, I don't mean to pry. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to." Niter didn't want to presume or press for answers; he knew how awkward that could get.
But it sounded like Tama wanted to get it off his furry chest anyway, and Niter always found it easier to listen than to speak. He couldn't really guess what happened from what Tama had said, though. "Um, do you want to start from the beginning? I'm not… Super sure what all of that means. But, like I said, I'm not trying to pressure you. You don't have to tell me anything." But it would sure help to know what was going on with this poor singed Mau.
He looked like he got medical attention, though, and that was something. Niter didn't mind carrying him the rest of the way to the Mauvian HQ. It was a pretty short walk, all things considered, and normally Niter considered distances equal to or greater than the distance between his gaming chair and the kitchen as 'too far'.
Once he'd reached the Coveted Door, Niter held Tama up Mufasa-style until he realized that's not the right height for scanning the forehead star. Once he held Tama low, the door opened up to admit the cat inside.
"Can I… Come in with you?" Niter asked, feeling simultaneously too forward and in awe.

“Yes! Just hold this up to the star.” And a small key card with a black star on it was slid from the cat-sized entrance after the cat had walked in. “It should open the human-sized door.”Tama waited for Niter to enter before continuing to a large room with computers, work stations and a teleporter ringed in crystals. “This room lacks any privacy, but no one’s here.” The Mauvian had found himself a pillow in the corner to bury his tear-stained face in. It was of a deep purple velvet with gold tassels on its four sides. Was that always here or a personal addition of his particular cat? “Why‘d ——tite have t- fry my ********—- fur -ff?” He cried into the pillow and blew his nose in it. Must be his personal pillow. Hopefully. ☆

When the keycard was passed under and Tama instructed him to come inside, Niter felt as thrilled as he was the day Elden Ring was released. He picked up the card gingerly, reverent in the way that he dared not touch it with more than the edges of his fingertips lest he leave a smudge, then held it up to the large door and waited. Once it opened for him, Niter darted inside as if it might bar his entrance as soon as it realized he wasn't a cat. But! It let him in!! And he made it! And now he got to see where the Maus lived!!
It was glorious. They had everything including a computer and some kind of pad on the floor? And some of it was cat-sized! Niter thought he would melt into a puddle if he kept looking at the delightful little room, but since cats generally didn't like water, Mauvians might not like water, and it didn't seem like Tama could take any more hardship.
It wasn't hard to find Tama, even in a busy room like this. The puff was absolutely squalling into that pillow, and it was difficult to tell what he was saying when his voice was shredded and the pillow was muffling any words. Niter frowned, walking over to the furry companion. When he knelt, he started stroking Tama's back gently in hopes it would help.
"Um. Who fried your ********?" Since that was all he could get out of that.

“Faustite!” Tama exclaimed as he took his head out of the pillow and howled. “b*****d is the root of all my problems!”And then he sobbed into the pillow for a solid minute before Niter’s back pets started to work their magic. “The general is why I’m burnt to a ******** crisp. Do you know what fire does to fur even if you’re humanoid when it happens?” The cat said as he finally got his face out the pillow and wiped his wet eyes on the back of his paw. “Well, it’s the same body in the end. Just look at it!”His fur was both blackened and rather…. lacking in some areas. “I did try to stab him. I guess I should have known what to expect.”☆

"Oh," Niter responded, blinking owlishly. Then he remembered who Faustite was and tacked on a more knowing "Ohhhh."
It made sense now. Who else but the General that was constantly on fire would burn a Mauvian? Niter thought it was terrible that such a majestic creature would have to suffer like that. Tama must've looked incredibly puffy when he wasn't shorn by fire, though Niter refrained from vocalizing that. He didn't know the whole story behind this spat, and it wasn't really his business to make judgment calls about the situation (or either of them involved). He wasn't going to chide the Mauvian about calling the General a b*****d, either; it seemed better to just give him the space to vent it out for a while without holding his words against him.
Tama did look like he jumped out of an air fryer before the equipment had a chance to crisp him up, for sure, but Niter kept that to himself, too. He also knew that, if someone was burnt badly enough, their hair didn't grow back? But Tama didn't look that burned in the areas with exposed skin. It was pinky and shiny, and probably felt a little tight, but in Niter's not-very-expert opinion, it looked like the fur would come back after a while.
Niter made himself comfortable next to the Mauvian as the story slowly started to come out, and he kept up his slow, steady strokes along the less painful-looking parts of Tama's body. Faustite burned Tama, and it sounded like that came after Tama tried to stab him. "What happened that led you to try to stab him?" And what did a Mauvian have for stabbing a General? Niter couldn't think of anything off the cuff, but he did know that Generals had weapons. If Tama divested Faustite of his weapon and tried to stab him with it? That was probably a seriously punishable offense, but also? It made Tama super badass in his opinion.

Tama registered the ‘ ohs’. He supposed that meant he wouldn’t have to explain who Faustite was or what powers he had or why it did, in fact, look like the cat had jumped out of the air fryer that was part of the general’s being just in time. What had led to the stabbing was surprisingly a bit easier to explain than Faustite was even if he understood his own emotions only marginally better than he understood Faustite. “I… remembered something. Something from before I was recruited here. I remembered someone from my past.” The cat looked like he was trying awfully hard to not end up in a puddle of tears again, going slower now than before. “Do you remember anything before you joined?”☆

Niter was aware that some of their recruits didn't remember parts of their lives, He never met any of them in person, though, or if he did, Niter didn't realize it at the time. Was that common? Was it something he should expect as he stayed with the Negaverse? He felt panic swell in his chest, but he tried to assuage it with what he knew, which was that the training manual never mentioned anything like that.
Niter tried to keep the panic out of his voice when he answered the tormented Mauvian. "I'm pretty sure I remember everything? Like, I remember being a little kid and playing in my Grandma's garden…" And he remembered Jet taking him to be recruited, though that hurt a lot and Niter didn't like to remember it. "And I remember being awakened and stuff.
"But, um, I've heard that there are some people that don't. I'm guessing that happened to you, too?" Which, if it did, that must have been devastating. Niter didn't know what else that would be like.

“Not like that! I remember waking up from stasis, being a Mauvian, not being in the Negaverse.” The cat hadn’t exactly been clear. “Just certain memories. Ones that maybe wouldn’t work with the new thing you’ve become.”He wished he knew how to explain it. He wasn’t trying to be secretive. For all intents and purposes, the senshi had already seen him at his worst — fur a mess and crying. There was no need to hide anything else. “Like, I remembered a person who I didn’t remember before. I always had a vague notion that I lost someone. But now I know that someone was a knight who I cared about.”☆
