Ilistoh was trying his hardest not to bounce out of his skin. All his life he had imagined what Belrea might really be like, playing with half-broken but still impossibly intricate mechanical toys and collecting stories from travelers passing through Tinerr. As it turned out, it was all way better in person.

He hunched over a small bowl of fruit he had purchased from a nearby vendor, watching the busy locals flit to and fro and making up secret tales about them as he chewed.

Nemia on the other hand cursed the locale at this moment in time. She needed to prove herself, needed to figure out a way to truly be the best there was to get into the Academy, and yet she had nothing. She was obviously the best, Obviously. She would do whatever she needed to in order to keep it that way, but right now she was frustrated. Her father suggesting she go and explore the world was not what she wanted. She didn't want to leave home like he had. He came to something better, while she would be leaving to go somewhere worse. At least that was how she considered it. Huffing and throwing her hands up, she distracted her thoughts the only good way she could think to do at the moment. She got herself a snack. Snatching up the berries from the vendor, her eyes lingered on a boy very much out of place as she popped one into her mouth. Wandering on over to him, she did a half circle around him while eating her berry.

"Who are you?"

He didn't notice her at first, thinking she was passing through just like everyone else, until he heard her question. It was a rather direct way to address a complete stranger, but she didn't seem rude. Judgmental, but not rude.

"I am Ilistoh of Tinerr, here to sell my wares." He didn't have any wares, at least not obvious ones, wearing only some homespun clothing and a single small pouch strapped to his thigh. "This is really good fruit, right? You think they do something to it?"

Nemia frowned, sitting down next to the boy as she listened to him. Tinerr...she hadn't heard much about it. She thought maybe there was an airship port there, but that didn't mean much. There were plenty here in Belrea. She held up the fruit to the sunlight, attempt to inspect it for any intricacies she had initially missed. It was possible someone had found a way to enhance the flavors of the fruit at the Academy and then shared it with merchants. Maybe for a price?

"Ilistoh of Tinerr, what wares do you think you have that the people here can't create already? There's an Academy full of people inventing all sorts of things, you know. Maybe they did something to make the fruit fancier. It's a possibility," she nodded, sticking the berry into her mouth. "I'm Nemia of well....here?"

"You'd be surprised, Nemia of Belrea. A lot of people are fascinated by things they don't see every day. Someone working on their one-person airship designs during the day probably goes home and drinks tea out of a handmade mug from Jauhar or whatever." Ilistoh shrugged. "I don't doubt they can make cups. But it's the novelty of the thing. The story behind it."

He watched her chew for a bite or two, then sat up straight with a smile. "That's cool though. About the fruit. I was kind of kidding, but... they really do that kind of stuff at the Academy?"

"The story behind it? I don't really think the story would matter so much as the quality of the item." She considered Ilistoh's words, picking up the bowl that contained his fruit and glancing at the bottom of it for some sort of maker's mark. If it had any story to tell she didn't know.

"They do so much at the Academy! So so many experiments and creations. They could definitely do something like that. I'm sure it would be easy for them to make it fancy."

"Hm. Maybe." It grated a little, but he chose to keep quiet about the importance of stories for now, trusting all of his vast experience over Nemia's opinions. He knew a well crafted tale played a big part in how people felt about things, and he was sure that knowledge would make him a better salesman someday.

"Are you gonna go to the Academy?" Maybe she could be the one he hitched his wagon to, if he ever managed to get one. Then he could tell everyone all about whatever she made and she would see how good his stories were.

"Pfft, of course I am. They'll accept me no problem. Just like my mother, and her mother. It's tradition, you know. I'm getting in," Nemia explained, trying to ignore the uncertainty that bubbled up when she talked about it. They'd be foolish not to accept her when she came from such a prestigious family of inventors. She just needed to show them that she was just as great as her mother.

"What about you? Are you trying to get in? Sell your wares to Academy goers?" If he was competition she would have to consider him a bit differently.

"Nope!" His reply was immediate, chipper, and absolute in its confidence. While he could admire the work they did in that mysterious place, he didn't think he was disciplined enough for those kinds of expectations. But he was interested in staying close. Spiritually or whatever, not physically. "Neither, really. I'm just curious about people like you." He hadn't had more than fleeting thoughts about what it would take to attend the Academy until today. Until the fruit. But now he was curious.

"I grew up hearing so many things about Belrea that I had to come and see it for myself. That's it really. Learning about the Academy is an added bonus. And now I'll know someone on the inside." Ilistoh ate another piece of fruit. "Maybe you can make vegetables that taste like candy." He grinned.

Nemia huffed and crossed her arms over her chest. What exactly did he mean 'someone like her'? A fantastic scientist? Or someone super cool that he was way more curious about and didn't want to admit? Either way the fact that he didn't want to join and work for the Academy annoyed her. It was the greatest place around after all! She popped another berry into her mouth to stop herself from saying something out of turn, and instead considered what he had said about the candy vegetables.

"Mm. Too basic. That's something that doesn't help anyone. Besides, vegetables taste just fine as they are! I need something way more exciting than that."

He could think of many things more exciting than candy vegetables, but all of them were just as idiotic. It was only when he considered the other thing she had said, the helping part, that he began to have ideas that weren't basic. Many of them involved getting his father on his feet, which was a near impossibility he didn't want to share with someone he didn't know.

"So, which is it: exciting or helpful? I can't think of anything that's really both. But maybe that's why you're a candidate and I'm not. Is that part of getting in? Coming up with what you're going to learn?"

Nemia nodded and shoved the last of her fruit into her mouth, looking in the direction of the Academy. It wasn't really a secret, but she still felt awkward explaining the ins and outs of it all to the boy.

"Well, both. Do you not thinking helping is exciting? I would say coming up with something to help others is exciting, but if you want an actual example well....these fruit are exciting. They're pretty and tasty. Also helpful since you need fruits. That's a simple example of course, but I'm sure crafting other things would be just as exciting," she reasoned, tapping the crystals on her chin thoughtfully.

Yeah. "Okay. I might have spoken too soon." He supposed he didn't think clearly when he was feeling competitive. But he wasn't sure he would experience excitement over helping people. Satisfaction, maybe, or pride.

"Exciting and helpful. Special safety saddles for raptrix racing? One-man gliders? This is tough. You're right." And now was probably not the time to dwell on it. "While I think some more, are there any interesting things to do around here?"

Any interesting things to do? Well....she wondered what the boy considered interesting. She thought being in a library was interesting, or watching people work on their projects. What did normal people her age think was fun and interesting? Going out to places? Dancing? She really had no idea. Looking it up would be a bit embarrassing as well.

"What would you consider....interesting? There are definitely places that are interesting, but I don't know your particular hobbies other than selling your wares."

"Ah." The places he found the most interesting back home were not the sorts of locations he would normally share with someone he had just met, but they all had one thing in common. He could get away with spying on tourists without arousing suspicion. But now he was the tourist, and Ilistoh had absolutely no idea where he might find a spot to sit around where he wouldn't look like he was committing a crime.

"Watching people live their lives. Working, doing things they shouldn't, hanging out with family." He shrugged a little. "I don't know. A park, maybe?"
