Nelson couldn't help it. As much as he was trying to help it…the fact that it was nearly Valentines day was…
Honestly depressing.
There was a new pop up cafe that had been getting some very good reviews, and he was toying with the idea of going…but…it was couples only. Two people in the parties, no more, no less…and as much as he wanted to go…he didn’t know who he could go with.
Sure, there was Jace but…the idea of asking Jace out on what could be easily taken for a date was…
Mildly horrifying, if he were being honest. That would just…be weird.
His eyes flickered through the painfully short contact list on his phone and he sighed, hovering over Xannder’s name for a long moment before he moved on, and then paused at Juniper.
…Maybe. That could work? It wouldn’t be great but…a friend date was better than nothing…and honestly, Nelson would give just about anything to try the chocolate fondue that they kept raving about on the reviews.
With a sigh, he sent out a text to Juniper.
Quote: Hey. Would you want to hang out today? You could come over now if you wanted? I’m. A little lonely. I guess. And I thought perhaps you were too?
…That wasn’t too desperate, right?
…Maybe.

Juniper had been scrolling through some social media feed, utterly bored with everything and anything. Thorn wasn't home and he wasn't exactly about to bug Faeth or Marq on the weekends, simply cause he was bored. They had their own lives to live, they didn't need to constantly babysit him. He about jumped out of his skin when the sound for a text went off. Quote: Bored. Lonely. Same thing really. What a perfect combination. Lol. But yeah, I can hang out. Did you want me to come over there or was there somewhere you wanted to meet up?" He shot the text off at rabid speed as he got up and got to get ready before heading out the door.

Nelson hesitated, but couldn’t stop a small smile for forming when he read that Juniper was both bored and lonely.
…It wasn’t anything to smile about but…
…It was nice to know that he wasn’t alone in his feelings.
Quote: Come over here to start with. We can figure everything else out later?
The smile remained on his face, small but very there, and Nelson bustled around, pulling out some lemonade from the fridge as well as some raspberry syrup, mixing the two and setting the glasses on the coffee table, definitely not looking at the door every thirty seconds.
…He was trying to wait at least forty five between glances.

A short time later and giant oversized hoodie later, Juniper was knocking on Nelson's door. He was glad to have gotten the other's address the last time they had met up. Everything looked so different without that freak ice storm that they had. Juni was grateful that it had started to warm up, even if it was just a small temperature difference. He never really was one for the cold.
The smaller man rocked on his heels as he waited, gift bag swaying back and forth as he did so. An extremely late Christmas present. Oh well. Better late then never, right?

Nelson had been a ball of anxious energy as he had waited for Juniper to show up. Thoughts were racing through his head, and he was quite sure that his friend wouldn’t end up coming over after all. That this had been nothing more than a large…horrible practical joke and Juniper had been simply pitying him…or…
Or something.
When the knock came at his door, Nelson stared at it for a few moments, debating if he wanted to open it or not…what if it wasn’t Juniper? What if it was a clown with a whipped cream pie ready to slam into his face? What if it was a salesman trying to get him to buy something he didn’t need?
Blowing out a breath, Nelson made his way over to the door and pulled it open, a smile blooming on his face when he saw that it was indeed Juniper.
“You made it!”

The thought had crossed his mind that maybe he'd made a mistake and had knocked on the wrong door. ********, this wasn't awkward at all. He'd been leaning over, trying to see if he had, in fact, gotten the number wrong when the door flew open.
Juniper jumped, spinning to face Nelson like a deer caught int he headlights. A sigh escaped him after a moment, and Juniper smiled. "Sorry. I was beginning to panic I'd messed this up somehow." Maybe he should have been better on his eta's.. "Oh! Uh... Here!" He said, remembering the bag and holding it out for the other. "I uh... didn't mean for this to be so late. I had meant to give it to you sooner but..." Juniper shrugged. "Merry belated Christmas."

Nelson blinked and reached out, taking the gift from the bag and looking at the floppy eared black rabbit with surprise.
…Surprise that quickly melted to utter delight. “Juniper, you didn’t have to get me anything..but…I love it regardless…”
And honestly? It gave Nelson just that much more hope that maybe his friend would want to go to the dinner at the cafe…couples themed or not. In fact.
“Come in, and um…come sit down!” He gestured for Juniper to enter the apartment and put the gift bag on the table, keeping the rabbit in his arms as he closed the door behind the male and led the way over to the couch. “So, I really wanted to invite you today to um. Well. You see there’s…ah. It’s really dumb. But there’s this pop up Valentines cafe that I really want to try but you have to go as a part of a pair…and…”
He stopped himself before he blurted out that Juniper was his only friend so he hoped that he would take pity on him and go…but.
“...I hoped that maybe you’d wanna go with me? Just to see what the hype is about?”

"I uh... got it after the first time we met." Juni said sheepishly. "I figured, just cause you didn't wanna talk to me, didn't mean you didn't want to talk at all." The smaller man glanced at the rabbit. "This way, you have something to talk to, without having to actually talk to someone.."
Juniper blushed, fumbling with his hands.
"There was a matching one, but I wasn't sure which you'd prefer so..." He said, following Nelson into the apartment. "I just... went with the black one cause... it reminded me of your uniform." Nope. Totally not awkward. If Nelson wanted the white one, welp. It was an easy fix.
He tilted his head, curious as Nelson spoke. ...A pop up valentines shop? Interesting... He hadn't heard anything about that. But then again, Juniper wasn't exactly a social butterfly, so that wasn't too surprising... The blush came back once more, not as strong as before but still noticeable. "Y-yeah. I'd be down for that." He had nothing to do today anyway. This was def better then sitting home alone.

Nelson drew his phone out of his pocket and took a moment to make a quick reservation for the cafe, keeping the rabbit snugly in his arms while he did so, and when they were booked for an hour from now, he paused and looked up at Juniper, giving a small, but growing smile. “...So…now we both have one? I like that…they should be allowed to um…to hang out sometimes. I bet they’ll miss one another.”
The smile didn’t leave his face and he nodded at Juniper, looking more eager now, far less nervous…and…almost excited. “I just got us a reservation, we have some time to just chill but…the reviews for the place have been really neat so…I hope it’s as good as it says!”
Glancing away again, Nelson tugged lightly on one of the floppy ears and gave a soft huff of a laugh. “...Thank you for coming over. I’m not going to admit how much I needed this…so just…thank you for being my friend. And wanting to…”
An hour wasn’t that long…
They could simply watch a show or something and things wouldn’t keep feeling so awkward...
…Even if it was a nice kind of awkward.

Juniper just stared, as if he'd been caught. Which, fair. He kinda had been. "Maybe. I will neither confirm, nor deny I have the white one. You.... hush up." He huffed, defeated. "I'll bring it next time there's a study night." The smaller man paused, before jabbing a finger at Nelson's arm. "That is not an excuse for you to call a study session, just to play with two plushies." Though Juniper knew it was a doomed idea as soon as he said it. It was bound to happen anyway. The question was when.
Juniper made a soft noise. "It's no problem." He said with a smile.
