Tendaji is a rich and diverse land filled with many different cultures and languages. While most travelers are fortunate enough to speak a common language, sometimes one might find themselves in a village where they can't communicate with the local population. How do you manage? Do you find someone to translate, or fumble along?

[ Tendaji has many different languages that the locals speak, and sometimes you might find yourself in a village or town where no one is speaking your language. Use this prompt to explore that miscommunication - maybe thinking about how hard it is to get your message across. Or connecting with a stranger who is helping you translate so you can make that purchase you need. What happens when everything is lost in translation? ]

Elka 1

Walking the rest of the way to their new home hadn't been Elka's idea. The cart carrying their stuff to their new destination had gotten stuck along the way, one wheel having broken completely off. The Matori hired to drive it had told them this might take a while to fix. Previously, they had been riding in the back, their legs dangling off the edge of it while they held onto a trunk that sat between them. Now they were walking instead of riding because Kayde didn't want to waste the time waiting. It wasn't that far away, he said. They should be there by dark if they walked. It wasn't like the cart was all that much faster than someone on foot, anyway.

So now she was walking, her feet smarting. She had never walked this much in her entire life. The bag slung over one shoulder with her most important possessions didn't really help the trek.

Sighing, Elka looked up at the sun, still a good many hours from turning dark. She tried to look on the bright side. The shining sun. The cool breeze. The smell of the ocean that made her feel like she was on vacation with her family, bring back lots of good memories. She really tried.

However, there was just one other thing that was bothering her aside from the sores she was very much going to have on the bottoms of her feet tomorrow.

"Kayde. Are we lost? We're lost, aren't we?"

Kayde 1

For Kayde, the walk was nothing out of the ordinary. Over the past few years, he had been doing all sorts of random jobs for anyone who would pay him good money, so he was well used to long days doing physical activity. Sometimes he forgot Elka wasn't as used to it. Working at the inn had her running back and forth just as much some days, he assumed she had a natural immunity built up to sore feet.

Apparently he was wrong.

He wasn't ignorant of the way she was walking. She had slowed down the last hour and started to limp slightly. It made him feel guilty. On top of her pain, there was another problem also not being voiced out loud. He wasn't sure where they were. Oh, they had been following a trail. But when it had split into two, he had kept going west, assuming if they kept going west, they would eventually make it to the house. Than the trail started to split more and more, and they were now steering more north than anywhere else.

"Uh, no....I...I know where we are. But look. I think I see a village in the distance. Why don't we take a rest?"

Elka 2

Stopping in her tracks, Elka sighed at his lack of admission that he had taken a wrong turn somewhere down the road. Or, rather, many wrong turns. They had no map. Had never occurred to either of them to get a map. So confident were they that it couldn't be that hard to find a tiny house at the end of a dirt road, that they had forgotten something so important. She was mad at him, but also at herself. If she yelled at him over it, it wouldn't be very fair of her when she was also equally at fault.

So, instead, the Ice woman let out a loud groan, covering her face in her hands.

"How stupid are we?!"

Kayde 2

Putting an arm around Elka, Kayde made shushing noises, rubbing her shoulder for comfort. "It happens. There's always villages scattered about, it's not all that bad, is it?" Her answer was to lower her hands to glare at him, gripping her skirt. Okay, not as comforting as he thought it would be. This was the first village they had seen for a while. Probably since he'd taken that first wrong path. And with her foot hurting as it apparently was, they couldn't afford to keep walking and getting even more lost.

"It'll be fine. We found one, didn't we?" Golden eyes narrowed at him even more. "And we have spare money if we need to stay the night, right? Come on." Holding out his arm, the woman steadied herself against him, curling her own arm through his and holding his elbow. He patted her hand, smiling at her until he received a small grin back. Satisfied, he walked them towards the village.

Elka 3

Resigned to their fate, Elka kept silent and let herself be lead, trying her best to walk with the bit of pain she was feeling in her heel. It wasn't like she was a stranger to feet pain, working long hours at the inn sometimes when the rush hour started. But of course, she had suffered through it with the knowledge that she had a bed to collapse into just down the hall when she was done. Now, she was out in the wilderness with no cart and no guarantee this village would have an inn or even a spare bedroom to offer her anywhere.

Kayde 3

The people of the village watched the out-of-place couple walk down the one large street of their village, many smaller roads branching off to reveal houses. Children sat on the front steps of their homes, staring more openly at the strangers than the adults were. All Matoran, Kayde stood out like a sore thumb, his skin so dark next to all the lighter shades of blue around him, Elka included. He cleared his throat, trying not to let all the looks make him so uncomfortable that he turned them around and left. They couldn't afford to keep walking.

To the left side of them an inn appeared. Relieved, they entered without a glance at the sign slowly swaying in the breeze. Approaching the counter with an older man standing behind it, he let go of the Ice woman and held out his hand to shake. The man simply looked at it before reaching out to grasp it.

"Hello. I'm Kayde and this is Elka. We've gotten ourselves lost and were wondering if there was a room available for the night?"

Elka 4

Elka watched from the side, sitting down on a stool while Kayde did all the talking. She reached down with one hand to rub at her ankle, her face scrunching up with the pain caused by the pressure of her fingers. Once she got back on her feet, the pain would increase. If they couldn't get a room tonight, she didn't know what they would do.

Her fears seemed to be coming true as she listened to the Matorian answer back in a language unfamiliar to her. With alarm, Elka looked up, exchanging a worried look with Kayde. This was not expected. She thought everyone everywhere spoke the same, unified language. Did small pockets of people really not? How were they going to communicate their needs to this man?

"Kayde," she said quietly, leaning towards him with an outstretched hand.

Kayde 4

The Leaf waved a hand at the woman, dismissing her concerns. "I got this," he whispered back, as pointless as speaking in quieter voices might be. The inn was mostly empty of people, the only other patrons sitting against the wall in the corner, watching the two at the counter. Also Matori, Kayde assumed them to be regulars who also lived in the village, stopping by for their regular meal before the sun went down. They appeared too far away to hear anything said. Still. Better safe than airing all their problems for the locals.

He turned back to the man behind the counter, who was tilting his head curiously at the two of them, clearly not understanding a single word. He placed a hand over his chest this time. "Kayde." Than placed a hand on the woman's shoulder, repeating her name for the man. When the man nodded some understanding this time, Kayde put both his hands to the side of his head, mimicking someone sleeping. The man nodded, again. Thank the Gods for universal gestures.

Elka 5

It seemed maybe he did, in fact, have it under control. Elka leaned back on her stool, placing her arms on the countertop, relaxing in the knowledge that Kayde would get them what they needed. Somehow. It was than that a thought came to her. The room was easy enough to communicate across. But what about the cost of said room? They couldn't open their purse and dump it all out, letting the innkeeper pick from it what he wanted. Who knew how honest the man was. He could just pocket everything. At the rate they were going, so far off course, they might need to hire another cart just to carry them to their destination. Hopefully someone spoke a language they knew.

And than there was the cart with their stuff. They were supposed to be meeting the driver at the house. Though he had the key to the lock, he also could be a dishonest person. When he saw they weren't there, he might decide to take all their stuff and leave to sell it.

Elka's finger started tapping on the counter, her anxiety beginning to rise once more.

Kayde 5

The light tapping sounded much louder in the large room, almost empty as it was. It seemed to almost bounce off the walls and fill the space. Kayde saw the innkeeper looked at Elka's fingers, clear annoyance on his face. He probably thought she was being impatient, but a look at her showed Kayde she was not. She was sucking on her bottom lip, her eyes glazing as they stared at nothing on the wall. A clear sign to anyone who knew her that she was feeling nervous. He placed a hand gently over hers, squeezing lightly. She looked at him, blinking a few times before giving him a small smile. Once reassured, Kayde returned to the Matori man, offering an apology with his eyes. Hoping the man would see it was a misunderstanding.

Unhooking his purse from his belt, Kayde held it on the counter, holding up his hand. He first held it at a fist, than slowly extended each of his fingers as if he were counting something. When he reached five, he closed the fist and did it once more. The man, first confused, eventually caught on to what the Leaf was trying to do. He held up his own hands, miming out with his fingers how much a room was. Kayde smiled gratefully, handing over the coins in exchange for a key. The man once more mimed out a number, indicating which room number was theirs.

Elka 6

"Sorry," Elka said quietly, just before Kayde turned his head back to the man. He hadn't given his name to them, she had noticed. Not that it mattered. They only planned on remaining for a single night than being on their way. Probably would never return to this little village. Why would they? There was nothing here for them to come back to. Especially if no one here spoke the same language.

She watched the exchange between the two men, spending a little time looking around at the room. Pretty decorations made of shells hang from the walls. Their new home was beside the ocean, she had been told. Maybe she should spend a day collecting pretty seashells for their walls, too. It looked really pretty. Even the long net covering a section behind the counter was beautiful, giving the whole place a very exotic look. Though it was more than likely this was just a fishing town and that net was no longer useable to catch fish.

Suddenly, a movement to her left caught her attention. Kayde moving from the counter. He held out a hand to her, which she took with a smile, rubbing his finger with the tip of her own. It didn't occur to her he had rented only one room until she was standing in the room and he was closing the door. The affect was instantaneous. Her heartbeat increased and her palms got sweaty. She'd never spent the night alone with him before. And there was only one bed.

She looked at him for an answer.

Kayde 6

In his defense, he, too, hadn't been thinking about what might be awaiting them when they reached the room. He closed and locked the door, turning around to see the single bed full of fluffy covers and pillows. Kayde froze, staring at it, a flush going to his cheeks. They had never spent a night alone together. Had never planned on doing that until...Well, until they felt ready, he supposed. It hadn't been a topic among them before. Somehow it had always been communicated that they would wait for a very long time, neither in a hurry to advance things.

"Um...Right!" Taking off his bag, Kayde put it at the foot of the bed, on the floor. "I'll just...Sleep on the floor," he answered, grabbing the top blanket and pulling it off. He folded it once so it was as wide as he was and placed it on the floor, checking it for softness. Not the best, but it would do for one night.

Elka 7

"Kayde, that doesn't seen the most comfortable." And it didn't. The floor felt very hard underneath her shoes, solid wood. There were no rugs to be seen, the only softness being on the bed. Except...

With a little giggle, Elka walked over to the side of the room where a couch was against the wall, a pillow propped up on either armrest. "This, however, looks very comfortable."

"It'll be fine!" the Leaf answered, settling down on the floor, feeling the hard wood underneath his body. He doubted he would get any sleep tonight down here, but sharing the bed was out of the question. There were enough things to worry about with being in a new place in the first house for either of them.

Than his hears heard a lovely sound: her laughter. His pale eyes followed the sound, to where she stood beside a couch. It was dark, easily hiding against the wall, slightly in the shadow. With a chuckle of his own, Kayde stood back up, taking the blanket with him. "Yes. This does look much better."
