Eternal Senshi

Backdated to December.

He loved winter in Destiny City.

Ymir didn’t hold much fondness for Earth. It was better than his own world by virtue of being alive, without the memories or the burdens that complicated his life on his homeworld, but people were generally the same throughout the galaxy, and the people of Earth were no exception. Corruption existed in all its various forms here, whether that corruption came from Chaos or from the nature of life.

But with the absence of the hot and humid weather that greeted him upon his arrival, Ymir found more reasons to venture out into the world. It turned out winter was pleasantly cold — pleasant for him, at least; the people of Earth bundled up in layers and turned to their heat and fires. Ymir, on the other hand, enjoyed the gray skies, the frost that often covered the ground, and the snows which fell from heavy clouds. He walked with Surtur sometimes, when Surtur could be convinced to leave the comforts of the Gallos’ carriage house and meander through the snowfall. If Surtur could not be convinced, or if his attention veered elsewhere, Ymir could be compelled to walk on his own.

Tonight, he was alone.

For a time, at least. As the thin layer of snow crunched beneath his feet, Ymir drew to a stop and focused on the sense that alerted him to something dark and ugly. Chaos. He knew the creeping horror of it, the way it seemed to smother the life from everything.

There was Chaos here. Close. Near enough that it could probably sense him, too.

Taenite didn’t need to collect energy. He had other uses in the Negaverse that didn’t require him to do the basic grunt work as the other peons. But out of the goodness of his heart, he was out doing a little energy collecting. And he was bored. And he told Axinite that he would do his best to collect more information or whatever.

“Nice evening for a little stroll,” he casually greeted the other Senshi when he got close enough. Not that he needed to walk. But it was always fun seeing what they would do.

A low level Senshi it seemed. Maybe he could collect their starseed and wipe one more off the list of enemies. Maybe he would keep a stash of starseeds, just in case he ever had a youma to feed.

“I’m surprised. Usually I see everyone bundled up in this weather,” he laughed, flashing the pale Senshi a grin. He was barely clothed himself, but didn’t seem to be bothered by the cold.

If the Chaos Senshi was expecting any sort of reaction, he would be disappointed.

Ymir didn’t flinch. He didn’t frown. He didn’t glare. He didn’t seem disgusted or afraid, even though the aura radiating off of the Chaos Senshi was horrid. Ymir thought he could almost taste it, sour on his tongue. It leaked from the other man in suffocating waves.

“You Earth people are weak to the elements,” Ymir said.

For him, the cold was a welcome respite from the discomforts of summer. The heat had been close and heavy, much like this man’s aura.

Ymir observed him. He knew the Negaverse had their own Senshi — some they forced into servitude, and others who willingly gave themselves to Chaos. He wondered which of the two this one was.

Not that it mattered now. He was Chaos. How it had happened wouldn’t change what he’d become.

“Did the Negaverse give you a name when they poisoned your starseed?”

“Are you asking me what my name is?” Taenite laughed in amusement at the unresponsive Senshi across the way from him. “Want to go out on a date, too?” he teased and held out his hands as though to show off his outfit (or lack thereof) a bit more.

“My name is Taenite. It’s the only name I have use for,” he grinned, but there was a sneer that found its way into the amusement.

“I’m going to take a wild guess and say you’re not from Earth? If we Earthlings-- or do you call us Terrans? If we’re so weak to the elements, why don’t you just… fly away home? Earth is overpopulated as it is. We could do with a few… billion less.”

A good culling wouldn’t hurt, in his opinion.

Ymir shrugged in response, unperturbed.

The Senshi’s aura was disturbing, the cracks along his head and chest equally so. He was stronger than Ymir in all the ways that mattered — taller, broader, a Super Senshi to Ymir’s weakened state. Yet his presence hardly seemed to faze Ymir, who watched him with a distant sort of curiosity, but not an ounce of fear.

Surtur would curse this poisoned Senshi, make an attempt to talk some sense into him, maybe, or destroy him if that couldn’t be accomplished. It wouldn’t matter that Surtur was similarly weak, that the powers he once had were taken from him by time and catastrophe. Surtur was just bullheaded enough that he might even succeed at issuing whatever fate he chose to hand to this Senshi.

Ymir was not Surtur. Ymir cared little for saving his own world, and even less about saving Earth.

Sometimes, he couldn’t even be convinced to save himself.

“I’m sure you’ll see that there’s a few billion less by the time Chaos has had its fill,” he said without emotion.

“Yeah that’s the idea,” Taenite shrugged. He didn’t seem at all upset about it. He picked the winning side of this magical war from the start. There wasn’t anything that could make him change his mind.

“Are you going to tell me your name, or are you just going to keep pretending like you don’t know your life's in danger. Or do you not care that I could kill you at any moment?”

This boring Senshi and their boring shrugs and unemotional responses. Taenite was pretty sure he could just take their starseed and they wouldn’t care, what with how they were reacting to everything.

The Senshi’s lack of concern for the people of this world was familiar, if only because Ymir shared it. He had no attachments to Earth. His own people were gone and he couldn’t be bothered to mourn them. If the people of Earth fell, too, it would only serve as further proof of the supremacy of Chaos.

Ymir couldn’t make himself care. What was the point?

“Ymir,” he said. He saw no reason to keep it to himself when asked. Knowing the name of his dead world wouldn’t give this Senshi any particular power over him.

“I’m very aware that my life’s in danger,” he added, “but my life means very little, and my death would have no effect on anything. I would simply cease to exist.”

Perhaps Surtur would mourn him, briefly, but Surtur had hundreds of years worth of experience with that, and could find solace elsewhere. Ymir was nothing to no one. These days, he preferred it that way. If he’d never awoken from stasis, if he could have slept forever, he might have been happy, even if he wouldn’t have known it.

“Well, if you’re volunteering,” Taenite said, sounding rather bored by this encounter. But if this Senshi was apathetic enough to literally not care if he died, well… he wouldn’t argue against getting a starseed out of this.

He teleported, crossing the distance to where Ymir was standing. It didn’t take long for him to reach his hand out and press it into the icy Senshi’s chest. Fingers reached for the seed--

But a sudden chill rose up around him, and he had to jerk his hand out of the Senshi’s chest to catch his balance, hissing at the wave of snow that pushed him away from the Senshi. He could have teleported again if he was able to concentrate enough, but he was busy trying to locate the source.

It wasn’t just Taenite that had been the target of her attack. She’d cast one and then the other in the opposite direction, pushing the Senshi in pale blue as far from the other as possible.

Varuna hadn’t been powered up until just a moment before using her magic. She’d heard voices, could see the trouble. She couldn’t just ignore what was happening, even if she didn’t know either of them.

She hurried to the pale Senshi’s side, holding out a hand to help him if he needed it.

Quote:
Sailor Scout Attack: Snow Slip
Snow suddenly materializes within a five foot radius, six inches deep beneath the feet of Varuna's opponent(s), pushing them up and off solid ground, then rolls out from under them at the speed of a fast treadmill, lasting only about ten seconds. May cause the opponent to slip and fall and get soaked with snow even as it disappears after it melts. Twenty foot attack range from Varuna. Can be used three times, four times her final limit.

Ymir knew, in the milliseconds it took for Taenite to teleport within reaching distance, that this could be the end for him. That it would happen like this, during a rare moment of enjoyment, out on a walk in the sort of weather he preferred, seemed almost fitting.

He was never allowed to enjoy anything for long.

A hand slipped into his chest. Fingers reached for his starseed. Ymir barely made a sound — a quiet gasp served as the only sign that he experienced any sort of shock or pain. He looked into Taenite’s eyes, almost thankful for him. There was no room for resentment, or hatred, or fear. Taenite was doing everyone a favor. Ymir’s life should have ended long ago.

He didn’t notice the additional chill. He barely noticed the flare of a friendlier aura. Ymir’s breath left him in a stuttering exhale as Taenite’s hand slipped free without its prize. Something came between them, pushing them away from one another. Ymir slipped and fell into the snow — deeper, for a moment, than it’d been just before.

Another hand, this one extended toward him, offered him assistance. Ymir looked up. His first thought was that the pale figure was unfamiliar. He didn’t know her face, knew he’d never looked into her eyes before. But he knew her colors. He knew the butterflies that adorned her clothing.

He reacted on impulse. He knew pieces of this girl, just enough to trigger a sense of care and protectiveness he’d thought long gone.

Magic chilled the tips of Ymir’s fingers. He sent it toward Taenite in a single mighty blast, the strength of it unintentional, beyond his control. It seemed to explode out of him, as if, after being stifled for so long, it finally found some sort of purpose.

Quote:
Sailor Scout Attack: Strike
A target of Ymir’s choosing will find themselves struck by a barrage of small pellets of sleet for 30 seconds.
These pellets cause a stinging sensation, and can result in thin, paper-cut-like injuries if the player chooses. Any pellets that find their way into the eyes can cause discomfort and temporary impairment.

This attack can be used 3 times.

One attack of icy, snowy magic was bad enough, but a second? There wasn’t enough of a benefit for Taenite to purposefully put himself in harm's way. He had his appearance to think about. As cool as some people thought scars were, he wasn’t in the mood to deal with the injury or recovery or deciding if the scar looked aesthetically pleasing enough to want to deal with these stupid Senshi and their stupid cold magic.

“Son of a-- <********>,” he hissed when the ice pelted hs face, and exposed skin. He tried shielding himself with an arm, but there was only so much he could do.

“Eat s**t,” he hissed, casting his magic at them before teleporting away. He could collect starseeds any day. Without being attacked by some ice queens.

Quote:
Super Sailor Scout Attack: Flame Vortex
A large vortex of flames is drawn up from the ground, this time fourteen feet high and three feet wide. It can be controlled to move quickly across flat surfaces, and has difficulty going through objects, such as a car, but can . While it is possible to dodge out of the way if quick enough, the heat can still be felt when close as one would feel real flames. While the fire does not leave permanent damage to humans or animals, clothing and objects can be left charred, and anyone caught in the flames will feel the sensation of burns (up to second degree) until the flames disappear. Players may choose to take lasting damage at their discretion. The magic lasts for thirty seconds and can be cast twice.

Varuna wasn’t sure what came over the Senshi in pale blue that made him suddenly revitalized, but she was grateful for his help. She watched as the magic seemed to burst forth with extra strength, and knelt down enough to try and offer additional help to get him off the snowy ground.

The corrupted Senshi was retaliating already, and Varuna hissed with displeasure as the flames rose up from the ground. She quickly pulled the other Senshi to his feet, trying to get him to back away with her.

She felt the shift in auras -- the other Senshi was gone. But while the flames burned, they needed to get away.

“Are you hurt?” she asked, voice quiet and barely heard over the roar of flames that she backed away from. She tucked some of the young man’s hair behind his ear to get a better look at his face, all the while trying to usher him further away.

The burst of magic left him exhausted, like he would be if he’d cast several times. Ymir allowed the other Senshi to help him, backing away from the flames left by the poisoned one.

He did not know this girl — woman; though she wasn’t old, she certainly had a mature air about her — but a part of him knew that he could trust her. She’d come to save him, out of necessity, or choice, it hardly mattered; she’d come for him, and he found that he was grateful to her, almost.

Ymir didn’t see much point in living, but there were moments when he was not yet ready to die.

He looked at her and decided now wasn’t the time.

“I’m fine,” he assured her, even as the flames licked at them. It was magic, and it would not last long. Less than a minute, and the flames were gone. He and the woman were alone, abandoned by their mutual enemy.

Ymir brought a hand to his chest, over his starseed.

He forced himself to breathe.
