There were rumors about the Bookwyrm, whispers that the owner mysteriously disappeared, murmurs that she was buried in the garden, that her head was cast in plaster and sculpted to look like one of the busts that rested on the top of the shelves. Depending on how young, and how ‘male’ they were the stories got grosser and gorier, and more detailed. Then again Dawn kind of expected that from teenage boys. They were always into that kind of ghostly fairytales. She was pretty sure that the old owner just moved or quit or sold the store. No way was she buried in the basement like some real life version of the Tell Tale Heart. It was pretty ironic though that the entire shop was decorated for Valentines day, hearts and cupids everywhere.

Personally she liked how eclectic the store was, how fun it was with all the little details and trinkets everywhere. She also loved how she could locate some books that were just impossible to find anywhere but on the web, and they were just silly expensive if you had to go that route. Here they were still not cheap but it wasn’t quite as bad, besides she was helping a local small business. A win-win in her book. Pun intended.

Now she just had to find the book that her class wanted her to read.

This was the first time that Sahara had gone to this book store. Her brother had suggested it, and while she ignored the suggestion at first, she finally made her way into the establishment. She had to admit that it had a very nice selection of books, but she wasnt sure it was the store for her. The Valentine's day decorations were everywhere and it was a bit off putting for her, giving her a cafe vibe, but it lacked food, so she didn't understand all the hearts everywhere.

Still it was fun, with all the weird little do dads, she wondered if the owner traveled a lot. That thought was squashed at the lack of foreign titles. She liked to read in french as well as english and their wasnt much of a selection. “What a bust?”

She sighed and browsed the young adult section.

Dawn had found her required book and after checking her time she decided to continue her perusal of the shelves. She pretty much passed through the shelves, looking at the trinkets and decorations more so than the books, and it wasn’t until she made her way to the young adult area that she really started to pay more attention to the titles than the ambiance. The kids section, one more aisle over, was a lot more brightly colored but this area still had dragons and knights on the shelves that was clearly the fantasy section, spaceships and other sci-fi stuff in the science fiction area. There was even a small selection of manga, and a few popular figurines denoting the space. “This store is just wild,” she muttered to herself as she made her way looking at all the books.

She was so focused on the books that she nearly, but thankfully didn’t, run into another customer. The petite woman glanced up and instantly recognized the other person. “Sahara! Hi, how are you doing?” It was the younger girl she had met at the skate park a little bit ago. Now this was a happy coincidence!

Sahara actually found a book that she had been looking for a while. It had been sold out online for a while and maybe she judged this store too quickly because she hadn't been able to get it from Barnes and Noble or Books a Million either. She wasn’t browsing anymore instead with her head down already reading her book of choice. She was definitely going to need to grab another, she had a feeling she would be finished before dinner.

She didn't even notice that Dawn almost ran into her, but she looked up at the sound of her name. She blinked and raised an eyebrow before recognizing Dawn. “Oh sorry, I was lost in the book already. I’m fine, how are you? Busy? Havent seen you at the skate park again.”

Quote:
“Ohhhhh neat! What is it? Can I see?” She was always up to see about picking up a new series, although with how tight her budget was she would have to try to get it from the library if it was possible. Spending money on luxuries like books just wasn’t in the cards right then, her current item was for school or she would be putting it back that was for sure. “Just busy with life sadly. I need to make time but well,” She trailed off and shrugged. She hadn’t even had the time to check out that clothing place that Sahara had mentioned last time. “And you? How are you doing with your tricks? Got any new ones down?”

Sahara held up the book and showed her to the cover, “Ive been looking for it for a while. They only have one too, but if you give me your number you can borrow it when I’m done, if you're into this genre. The waitlist at the main library is long and well the other libraries dont have it. I swear you’d think it was a limited edition or something. I think the book had publisher issues.”

She closed the book, handed it to Dawn to read the back and continued her browsing listening to Dawn's questions, “no not really. I have just been skating to relax lately. Ive been really busy with school, it's paper season. I think the teachers are out to get us right now. It's really ridiculous.”

She pulled another book off the shelf, turning it over to read the back. “Is it paper season for you too?”

Quote:
“Sure,” Dawn looked over the book, reading the back of it and contemplating it. It seemed pretty interesting. Not her normal read but it was always good to branch out. “I can send you a text right now” She passed the book back and fished out her phone, ready to send her younger friend a quick text. “Sort of, it seems like everyday's paper season. Add in work and everything, my schedule gets pretty full fairly fast.” She shrugged even as she sent over a quick, ‘hey its Dawn’ text to Sahara.

“I really only stopped to pick up required reading. It's cheaper here than online.” She held up her book, a picture of a painting of an old philosopher on the cover. It was going to be dry as all get out but she needed it for one of her classes so she was going to have to read it, one way or the other.

Sahara gave Dawn her number so she could text her and saved Dawns number when she got the text. She didn't think they talked about it before, but she realized now that Dawn was probably in college. She honestly hadn’t even thought about it.

“Guess Im lucky that I’m still only 16. I haven't got to work yet and I'm hoping to get a full ride to college. If I’m lucky my first job will be in my desired field, but you never know how that will work out.”

Sahara frowned at the book she held up, “I feel for you. I do not think I would ever read that, but at least you got it at a lesser price.”

Quote:
Dawn shrugged, “I wouldn’t be reading it either if it wasn’t needed for my class. If your not able to pull off the full ride check to see if there are any scholarships or grants, its the only way I can afford to go myself. It doesn’t cover it all but it does cover most of it. I work to cover the rest.” Her phone cheeped, not from a text or anything but from the alarm she had set before coming into the store. She needed to go. She had work to get to. “Speaking of work, I've got to go! Enjoy the book, let me know when you're done with it!” Dawn waved and quickly made her way back to the front counter where she rapidly paid and headed off to her job. Being an adult stunk sometimes but she would have to remember this store, if only to come back later when she had more free time or more free money.

Sahara nodded her understanding, she still had another year of highschool, though this summer and the coming fall were when she had to focus on college applications and the like. She did just want to go to Destiny City University, she honestly wanted to attend somewhere out of state, but it wasn’t like there weren't other colleges in the area.

“Alright see you Dawn, text me next time you're at the skatepark. I’ll come hang out.”

Sahara went back to browsing the books, she had to wait for her brother to come pick her up anyway, so she wasn't in any rush.
