Kalpana kicked the dirt nervously, waiting for Malea to show up. They had decided at the end of their date that only a few short days later they would meet up again and this time to go fishing. Kalpana felt the heat on the back of his neck while he waited for the menehine girl. This was basically like a second date and he couldn’t get the picture of her out of his head.

Malea didn’t know if she was supposed to bring anything with her, but she didn’t own any fishing gear. She hoped that with their conversation before Kalpana would already know that. She hitched her bag over her shoulder just a little higher and puller her braid off of her shoulder. She didn’t know why she felt so nervous, but something about Kalpana felt different.
Not only had she never been on a date before, so there was always that, she just outright had a really good time with him.
After coming around a bend in the foliage she could see Kalpana’s dark hair poking out from between a couple of trees. She hurried her pace and waved to him, her smile genuine.

Kalpana turned to see Malea already closing the distance between them and waved vigorously back. “Hey! You’re here!” He ran forward and stopped when he reached Malea. “Do you want me to take your bag? Do you need any help?” He offered eagerly.

She looked down to her shoulder and back to Kalpana with surprise at the burst of energy from him before she returned his smile and shook her head. “It’s ok, I don’t think I need the he—“ she started but before she could finish her sentence, Kalpana was already pulling the back off of her shoulder.

Malea had started to refuse, but he grabbed her bag anyways. “Nonsense! Let me help you. You shouldn’t have to carry anything.” He pitched, already turning to head toward the boat, grabbing Malea’s hand and bringing her along. “Listen, I just want you to have a good time. It wouldn’t be right if all the logistics of it turned you off of fishing you’re very first time.”

Malea blushed. Kalpana was taking care of everything and she found it very endearing. When he grabbed her hand she could already feel herself overthinking everything and the touch itself was just so warm and inviting. He had large hands.
She felt a bubble of warmth rising out of her chest and she followed Kalpana without hesitation. “Well… thank you.” She started, not really knowing what to say yet. She was too focused on her feelings and, well, suddenly some daydreams to put together much of a sentence. “I’m sorry I’m such a bother. I didn’t have anything helpful to bring.”

“Whoa whoa, now none of that.” Kalpana interrupted her apology before she could say anything else. “Listen, I brought you here. I supply the stuff. It’s not a bother at all.” He beamed back at Malea and put her bag gingerly in the boat. He had already loaded everything else inside of it.
“Here, let me help you in.” He offered a hand with a foot already in the boat to steady it. “We’re not going out too far today, but it should still be fun.”

Malea took his hand again and stepped into the boat, trying her best to not fall over with the rocking of the water. She sat where he had offered and waited for him to join her. “So… do you take… friends here often?” She hesitated at the word friends. She was already hoping that maybe Kalpana thought of her as more than that.

Kalpana plopped himself down on his side of the boat, the boat swaying back and forth with a little pitch of waves. “Oh! Well, I mean, not really. I think I’ve brought my friend Manu once.” He scrunched his face up, trying to think if there was any other time he had someone on his little row boat, but no, that was it. “Yeah, just the once.” He affirmed.
“But don’t worry!” He waved his hands. “I’m a good rower, I won’t tank us.” He thought maybe she was nervous about his ability to handle the both of them. “I’ve got this.” Kalpana grabbed the ores and started to push the boat away from shore.

She could tell Kalpana hadn’t put any additional thought into what she had said and she gave a little laugh. It was kind of cute how he thought so innocently of her question. He was really just worried about her having a good time. But she also felt a little better knowing that well… he didn’t take everyone here with him. She didn’t think that she was the jealous type, but she was starting to think that was a possibility.
“I believe you. I know I’m in good hands.” She put a hand on his arm as he rowed and maybe she lingered there just a bit too long. She could feel the muscles under his skin pulling and stretching with the oars.

Kalpana felt the touch of Malea’s hand and felt the same familiar blush creeping up. Maybe it was just him, but it seemed like maybe Malea was flirting with him. He broke his concentration on where they were going and slowed down his rowing, the boat drifting slowly through the lake. His arm could still feel the spark from having Malea’s hand resting on it.
Without a word he felt himself making the brash decision he couldn’t hold back anymore. He leaned forward and gently touched his lips to Malea’s. They were soft, and it drove him insane to pull back but he had no idea if he was even reading the room right.

Malea lifted her hand off of Kalpana’s arm just for him to lean in and surprise her with a kiss. She closed her eyes, feeling his lips against hers and feeling a heat travel through her. She was blushing furiously when he leaned back to look at her. “I… well…” She tried to find any word, but language had all but left her.
She hesitated for a second, but then leaned forward and returned his kiss with one of her own. This time longer.

Kalpana was pleasantly surprised with a second kiss and leaned into this one more eagerly. He let his lips linger a little longer before Malea pulled away and they were both just looking at each other.
“So there’s that then.” He booked the silence with probably the dumbest thing he could think he had ever said.

“There’s that.” She echoed, her voice trailing off. She could feel an excitement inside of her.
“I think today is already a great day, don’t you?” She quipped, looking at Kalpana with deep expectations of what this all meant.

Kalpana nodded his head, his blush dissipating. Well the good news was his stupid mouth hadn’t made things worse, but rather made things so much better.
“So listen… I… would love to keep doing that.” He started. “I mean, as a given.” He grinned. “Do you… well… do you want to see each other more?” He offered. He thought it might be lame to be like ‘do you want to be my girlfriend???’ But didn’t know if his version out loud was much better.
