Revna’s leg dangled over the edge of the cottage’s roof. Her other foot was tucked beneath her rump, the youngling having decided that she would make herself comfortable while she roosted high above the gazes of others. She had learned a long time ago that it was harder to be spotted when you were above the ground while being on the ground always led to awkward conversations and useless greetings whenever another villager walked by. Unlike her brother, Revna only enjoyed conversations if they meant she gained something in return. If there was no profit then the girl would rather stick to the shadows and climb heights to try to pick up anything interesting that caught her attention. It had led to a few chases, a variety of repriments, but overall she was proud of the nest of shiny and unique items that she had gathered. Her last few nests had been found out, but the little collector had thought to go higher this time around and so she had a little stash tucked away in the attic she had recently emerged from. While her mother tried her hardest to deter the family from metal jewelry and the like because of the bitter cold of winter, Revna liked to rebel and would wear the pieces that she had stowed throughout the house and village. Currently she was considering her next victim errr… donor for her collection, the girl’s lips pursed as she surveyed the village that was only a short walk away from their family home. It was nice being at the top of an incline while the rest were lower in the valley as it allowed her plenty of warning for whenever someone was on the way to visit, the little curving path visible as it cut through the open fields surrounding the village. Her stomach gave a slight rumble and a soft sigh left her lips as she glanced down at the culprit before looking back towards the village.

I suppose a visit to the bakery would be nice.” It was already the first of winter after all and so their Papa had already left to take care of business for the next few months, leaving the family without the usual array of goodies that he liked to bake.

Silfurvængur had a habit of moping the first few weeks after her Far went away. She could always whine and cling to him to buy a few more days, once even a season, but after a talk from her Mor Silfi knew she was being selfish. Mor explained to her that it was making him feel bad and even though she loved him very, very much that it wasn’t for forever. They’d be back together as soon as snows melted and once she was big enough she could even go with him if she wanted.

Problem was she didn’t want to go with him she wanted him here. Silfi wanted all her family here with the Ild’vann where things were good and shiny and happy. Sylvirah was always quick, sometimes tactful sometimes not, in telling her that couldn’t always be. She loved her Mor a great deal, but when it came to her parents she was definitely more attached to the shifter that was wrapped around her little finger.

Inevitably chores would always take her mind off things, activities with her siblings would pass the time and a winter’s feast would make her woes go away until he came back. For the time being, however, Silfi was a grumbly mess. She wrapped a well-worn, hand me down woolen scarf up around her head (because spirits help her if her mother saw her without it), and stepped outside with a huff. There was a lot to do, she knew that much, but did she want to do any of it…no. So, she was going to bother her sister instead.

“Revna? Revvy, where are you?”

Oh this was simply too perfect a moment. Revna could not resist the urge to mess with Silfi and it always defeated her desire for solitude. Perhaps it was a bit of jealousy that made Revna pick on Silfi more than others, especially since she always had their father's attention, or maybe it was simply too fun to play around with her sister. Either way Revna could not resist scooting down quietly from her perch, the youngling only wincing slightly as her tucked leg had gone to sleep with the fuzzies from sitting for so long, and after making certain the fuzzy limb would behave the girl inched forward towards the lower ledge of the roof. One, two and go! She grinned like a madman as she jumped down right behind Silfi. "Here!" She called out from right behind the other girl's ear, her delight obvious in those gleaming golden eyes. Unlike Silfi, Revna could not stand trailing a scarf around since the material always tried to trip her up when climbing and so she simply sported a slender fur around her shoulders. If not for fear of her mother's wrath the girl probably would have forgone that as well in order to try to get more freedom of movement. Once she had actually gotten the sniffles and a chill from going out without enough protection from the cold and the week of bedrest had been plenty enough punishment on its own for the energetic child. Never again would she endure such a horrible thing!

"Why are ya lookin' for me, Silfi?" She asked almost too innocently as she took a step back, her hand moving to tuck back a strand of dark hair that gleamed with golden and silver beads.

Silfi curled her toes in her books and rocked up on the balls of her feet as she tried to spot her sister. She’d looked up when she first came outside, just because she though she knew Revna enough, but when she didn’t see her older sister immediately the child gave up. Maybe she was hiding in a tree or under a rock? Or someplace dark where she could hide her treasures like those birds in Uncle Ergon’s books-

The moment Revna landed behind her Silfi screamed and started to turn onto to fall flat in the snow. Her scream may have carried had it not been for a gust of wind that blew over them, effectively blocking out her vision for a bit save for the dark figure in front of her. When Silfi could see again her little heart was absolutely thumping and her eyes were blown wide with surprise. “Revvy!” In a huff Silfi rolled over onto her back and kicked as much snow as she could onto her sister before sitting up with a growl.

“Doesn’t matter now. Go back up to your perch you…you…” What was the word? “-dårlig fugl.” Silfi pulled herself up to her feet and started brushing the snow off her clothes.

A devilish grin crossed Revna's features whenever Silfi let out a scream. Even if she had apologized it would be an obvious lie from the pure delight that lit up her golden gaze and so the girl simply waited for her sibling to chastise her, a small chuckle escaping her lips at the insult. If anything Revna rather enjoyed being called a bird, especially a trickster or mean one since she would gladly admit that she had quite the mischievous side. Some adults would consider it a cry for attention, but the youngling preferred to think that she simply enjoyed having fun while others were too boring for pranks. Plus, if everyone babied Silfi like their father then she would surely fall apart whenever left on her own in the world. "Oh, lille Kanin." Revna gave a slight shrug. "I was actually on my way to go get some snacks from the bakery so my perch will have to wait."

She twisted her hair over her shoulder into a sloppy braid, the girl waiting a moment before studying Silfi again. "You could always tag along if you'd like since I have some coin for extra treats to share. Unless you're afraid of more things chasing you from the forest?" Not like it was a far walk since the village was simply a short distance from their own cottage home, but Revna liked to take the winding path that cut through the stretch of forest along the edges of the valley since it was far more intriguing than simply walking out in the open fields.

Silfi curled her nose at the condescending ‘pet name’. She hated being referred to something soft like a rabbit, but at least rabbits were faster than birds. Revna might be able to climb and hide when she wanted to get up top, but she couldn’t catch Silfi when they were on the ground; she’d made sure of it.

“I don’t need your coin. I’m going to make a trade; whatever I want I’ll work off.” She lifted her chin proudly, tilting it in a way she’d seen her mother do thousands of times before with a quarter of the bite. Where Sylvirah was all hardened edges and a beauty born of danger Silfi still had too much youthful cheek fat.

Of course, if Revna hadn’t said she was going to buy something then Silfi very well would have purchased her treat. She wasn’t a known volunteer for hard work, but now…well, it was a point of pride.

"Mmhmm." Revna tilted her head upwards as if the sky was more interesting than her younger sister. "Whatever you wanna do. I'm sure the baker could use the help." She gave a slight shrug. "I suppose I could try to save myself some coin and ask for work as well." She twisted her boots in the ground, the snow crunching beneath her feet. Thankfully it was just an older layer of frozen crunch beneath the inch or two of fresh snow they'd just gotten last night, but it was plenty enough to remind her that winter was here. No baked treats from their father, just the bitter wind howling outside in the late hours of afternoon. Maybe some treats would lighten her mood. Revna pursed her lips at the thought before taking a step forward.

"I'm taking the more exciting path. Keep up if you can." She challenged Silfi before moving forward, knocking a few stray branches out of the way as she ventured towards the right side that curved through the forest and ignored the straight and open path to the village.

Well now she didn’t want to work anymore. Silfi blew an irritated huff up toward her bangs and felt her shoulders sag. In truth she rarely knew what she wanted. Silfi was just young enough to crave near constant companionship during her waking hours, but also old enough to be stubborn about it. Yngvara said she as being bratty on more than one occasion, though her older sister would inevitably give in if Silfi pressed hard enough.

Looking out over the easier to walk, well worn pathway, Silfi anxiously turned toward Revna’s way instead. It looked like a lot more fun than the boring, open field, but…Gussying up her shoulders, the little hybrid picked up her pace to catch up to her big sister. “I know a secret I bet you don’t.” She proclaimed in a light, distinctly proud melody.

If there was ever a weakness of Revna's then it was secrets. The raven haired girl always wanted to know what was happening and adored hoarding knowledge as much as she did shiny things. Of course she didn't want to let Silfi know that so easily and so at first Revna acted as if she didn't hear it, the girl darting around a few trees playfully before popping back out on the path next to her sibling.

"I'm sorry, did you say something?" She teased lightly though there was a spark of curiosity that lit her gaze. What did Silfi know and how did she make her spill the secret? Tormenting her only ended in stubborn tears or could potentially chase her away....Revna chewed the inside of her cheek thoughtfully. "Probably wouldn't be that interesting anyways, right? Or maybe I do know it but there's only one way to know for sure." She finally stated with a glance towards Silfi. Revna had picked up a stray stick when she had darted around earlier and casually knocked away some stray foliage as she kept leading the way forward, this time sticking next to Silfi just in case.

If she paid attention half as much as she talked then Silfi might have noticed when Revna disappeared. Maybe if she had she wouldn’t have lurched to the side out of surprise when she reappeared and swatted at her sister. Stop that.” At least she was doing it in the daylight; this time. Her silver eyes narrowed for a bit before raising with haughtiness as she continued walking.

“You don’t know about this secret; no one does. If they did then Yngvara wouldn’t- “ Catching herself, eyes temporarily widening on the slip, the little hybrid cleared her throat and picked up her pace. “Y-you just don’t know it.”

"Maybe." Replied Revna though the grin that crossed her lips hinted that she probably wouldn't stop as long as she found amusement from Silfi's reactions. Another soft chuckle escaped her as she watched the surprise turn into haughtiness again. Did Silfi really have to wonder about why she was such a good target?

"Uh huh." Revna tried to keep the excitement out of her voice and kept her gaze forward to try and hide the gleam of rising interest. The youngling swatted at another patch of grass, startling some nearby birds that fluttered into the air with disgruntled chirps, and despite her attempts to remain calm her mind was spinning. What was Yngvara, their older so perfect sister, up to that Silfi would consider it a huge secret? "I see she told you as well." Revna started with a sigh. "I thought she didn't want the news to spread..." She peeked towards Silfi, just waiting to see how the youngling would react to her words.

Told her as well…huh?! “What?! She told you! She didn’t even tell me; I just heard her talking to those guards that dropped her off.” Now Silfi really was pouting. She kicked up a spray of fresh snow and very nearly slipped on the layer of ice underneath. It had been so early in the morning that she wasn’t even sure what she’d seen was right, but those men definitely weren’t hunters. They were too fancy for that.

“S’not fair that she told you and not me ‘bout it. Bet she told Ziya too; she tells him everything.” When their big sister wasn’t out on long hunting trips then she was doing this and that for the village so Silfi didn’t get to spend a lot of time with her. When she was around then she made it clear what Silfi could touch, what she couldn’t, blah blah. Jerk.

Oh now the information was freely rolling. Revna reached up to tuck back a stray strand of hair, the motion mostly so that her hand could cover the grin that crossed her lips. "Maybe she just got worried that you'd either get too worried about her or would try to get involved? You know me, I stay away from dangerous situations like that." Revna talked boldly, her mind spinning with possibilities. Guards had dropped off Yngvara? But why? It wouldn't surprise her if Ziya knew but he wasn't easily tricked like Silfi. A pout crossed her lips as she nearly kicked at the snow too. Why hide things from family? It was probably something that would make their mother upset maybe? Their father rarely got too flustered unless he caught one of them being downright mean to someone else...Revna had learned to be a lot sneakier ever since.

"Shame though. I can't believe they were so careless. I can only imagine all the things you must have heard from those guards!" Revna shook her head dramatically as if ashamed. "What if someone else overheard their conversation?"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:26 am

“Maybe.” Revna had a point; if she told her then Silfi would have tried to help. She wasn’t good enough with any kind of weapon just yet to be of help and her hands were too small for knotting ropes. One day she would be just as good as her older siblings, but right now there wasn’t much she could do. It was so frustrating! “I don’t think anyone else heard; they were trying hard to be quiet. They brought back Yngvara’s whole hunting party, but she was the only one they talked to so it must have been really important.”

It wasn’t as if it was the first time the Ild’vann had come under fire from local authorities. Silfi had seen guards show up more than once when the hunters ‘accidentally’ branched into lands they shouldn’t, but it wasn’t often. “Do you really think she’s going to have to go to Jauhar with him? That’s so far and if she’s by herself she could get hurt.”

"Gotcha." Revna was quite good at keeping up the knowledgeable appearance until Jahaur was mentioned. The girl nearly stumbled over her own feet in surprise, her hand tightening on the stick and actually getting scraped by the rough wood with how tightly she grasped the thing. "That's so far." She murmured, her cheeks flushing as she caught her mistake. "I mean, it's definitely dangerous because of how far it is. Surely she'll take someone other than some stranger." Revna actually felt concern, just a little bit, because if something happened to Yngara then spirits knew what type of future awaited her and Silfi. Would things get even more restrictive?! Oh no, they had to do something!

"Maybe we should get involved." Revna pondered as she glanced to Silfi. "You really only overhead the guards and didn't say this to anyone else?" What if Ziya didn't actually know? Shouldn't he be told so that he could try to talk to Yngvara or at least help her out? Their Papa was probably somewhere in Oba already since he took odd jobs in the winter....ugh, what a hassle!

"Maybe Ziya will go with her or we can hinder her departure until it's too late because of the winter storms..."
