Variel 1 She was proud of Viltre. He had sussed out information from a difficult region that had been buttoned up tighter than a clams arse. He had put feelers out like a great mudcat and had kept up the pressure until the needed clue had dropped. She smiled at his back where he sat in front of her on Xarthin’s broad back his feet dangling past her shorter stirrups. She had let him drive today, an exercise that both she and Xarthin were rather amused at.
The air flowed past, a sweet wind draped in the scent of wildflowers. The sky hung thick and blue with narry a cloud to mar its visage. It reminded her of Oba where blue sky was the norm so long as the sand didnt get all feisty. Matori usually had a few puffy clouds at least. She missed both places but that was the perk of leaving; to return.
“Your message was recieved then, they will meet us on the road?” She had been distracted packing and had not been able to listen fully on the first run through of their plan pre departing Tale.

Viltre 1
In fairness, Variel was still driving them forward. Her partner held the reins, but it was the beast doing most of the steering, and that mostly following the road. He had the motions down soon enough. ...But there were dozens of little tweaks and indications taught by experience, and they came slowly. He'd likely never be more than passable in the saddle. Which, as it happened, was part of where the Oban noblewoman came in. She'd kept his back safe from the obvious issues while he handled the subtle, and vice versa. Their partnership was working out quite well when it came to a balance of skills.
For instance, she handled this wet weather much better than he. Today had finally been a day without loud or rain, and the heat of the sun lay welcome on Viltre's skin. "It was sent. We'll see when we arrive. Worst case, just gonna head to the ranch and break the news fresh. My line's crest," a gloved finger reached up and tapped the middle crystal on his forehead, "is distinctive. Little sister and two of my nephews have it, so introductions won't be an issue." The courier had been sent with additional instructions to pass on as well, a meeting place so they didn't have potential strangers trespassing on their land...

Einsol 1
Good news had come from the west. Her nose, her Da's, her Ma's, her twin's, and all those in her pack had been unable to catch their stolen cub's scent. Not on a cold trail. The nest-thieves who'd done it were wily, and hidden their own tracks and scent from the inevitable hunt. Einsol, once her magic had broken through, had found an outlet for the raw fury itching at the back of her mind ever since, but that didn't mean it had stopped. The thing causing it, the absence in her brother's den, still gaped her heart. For all it hurt the healer, it was worse for Ushiwa, his mate and his eldest cub.
...And now, after years of waiting and searching, Thalassa's letter had produced another. One that claimed its writer had caught scent of the thieves. The messenger that brought it had given them a time and a place to meet, to explain further. Though the name on it had been that of Terrwyn's brother, it could've been anyone waiting there. So, they sent the feral twins to investigate, to see if this good news was good enough to be true. If not, woe to whomsoever had played so cruel a joke. But if so...
If so, then finding their prey might find their missing cub. Einsol had sat down in the open field, back against the flank of Ushi's resting Janarim. Currently she was occupied with a knife, sawing and hacking at a nice branch she'd picked up. One of her favorite sticks had snapped not too long ago, and this looked like a decent replacement. ...Once it was cleaned, anyhow. "Whaddya think? We here in peace or is someone messin' with us?"

Ushiwa 1
He glanced over at his twin, orange eyes blazing with flames fanned by hope. Pure white blue hope. "It better not be a trick," Ushi looked like he was nearly ready to go to war he had smooth body armor and a war beast and a war sister. He was perhaps a bit over prepared but when it came to his daughter he would raze a whole town if needed.
"Shouldn't waste a parent's time that way, especially this parent."
He had cleared the grass and made a small fire upon which he stacked a bit more wood, it was time for a meal and the beast needed a break as well.
" 'Wyn's brother brought Thall his cubs, no reason he wouldn't also bring us ours, him being the helpful sort." Usually his words were a touch finer cut than Ein's but when they were alone and he was in predation mode, he slunk back to their most familiar dialect of straight to the point stabs, slurs, and bright blinding smiles. Einsols always having been a bit more effective, he figured that was oweing to her being a girl and not his fault. It also might be that he had a touch harder time hiding the predator that lurked under his pelt.

Variel 2 She contentedly buried her face between his shoulder blades and inhaled the sweetgrass and fresh air scent of him. Their last Inn had had some truly divine soaps and she was loving it.
They had gotten closer in the days used to prepare for their trip. He made her feel safe, and hopeful. More than anyone else had ever managed that was for sure. He was steady and serious and at times adorable and hilarious. Not everyone could pull off a sheet toga with a straight face. She smiled into his back.
"I do love watching you work." She was snuggled up against his back, it was a little windy out, that was her excuse, yes.
"I Think the closest thing to my family crest is Mom's freckles. We all have them except dad,"

Viltre 2
The slim man's back and posture kept straight. She'd beome more openly affectionate of late. Viltre's feelings on this, as with many personal matters, were complicated. He'd tried reciprocating in much the same way, and that had been accepted in public. Out and about, it was a show, practiced steps, and they both knew it. In private, his gestures of fondness had been quieter, subtler. A brush here, a touch there, the hint of a smile every so often. Expressing genuine emotion still came with difficulty no matter how much he felt. Could he have kept up the act instead? Absolutely. But Variel was his partner to start, and lying to her had been taken off the table in the initial bargain. "Look forward to meeting them."
Meeting one family needed to wait, however, as they might well be meeting another in a moment. There was a smoke trail rising just a short ways ahead of them. Off the track. Too small for arson. Camping in the evening? ...That should be near our meeting spot. "Half-draw, Variel. Someone's at our site." Sure, it was probably his kin, but no way to know that on approach.
When Xarthin had bourne the approaching pair close enough to make out blue figures, the thief's deep voice rose out in greeting. "Hello over there! Out hunting?" He'd included a recognition phrase just in case, but Thalassa's folk seemed to favor directness over subtlety. He couldn't be sure they'd remembered, either...

Einsol 2 The smile opened up as though invoked. She wasn't much worried. Even if this was a trick, it meant something had changed. Prey used tricks to survive. Predators used tricks to feed. They weren't used for no reason. Either way, they would get something useful from whoever came. Even if it all went to the Depths, they'd get to let off some steam. That she and her brother might come out second best in that sort of scrap didn't even occur to the healer. Einsol, by chance, had not remembered any code or countersign. But she did know her colors, and had good eyes in her head. Good enough to know those shades of pelt and fur on the frontmost rider. And the pink spots on his forehead besides. All of which looked a whole lot like her newest sister. "Seems that might be him now. An'-" She paused, orange eyes brightening further. The dark janarim below the figures came far better in memory. "Izzat Xarthin?" Fingers cupped around her mouth, calling back. "Hoy! I know that ol' beast! One of you uncle Reilan's cub?!"

Ushi 2
He too could see the group approaching on the janarim. Ein's senses were extremely sharp. He too didn't think that any general fight with random tendaji rabble would be able to best the wolf twins. Their teeth remained sharp, he was in his prime and gaining respect and sage knowledge by the day. His sister held life and death in either hand.
Not to be over dramatic but they were deadly badass together. "Mentioning hunting is part of the code, Viltre knows none of us would relish being titled as a lousy hunter. Its a direct reference to our familial line. Identity has been confirmed, good eyes Ein." He hugged his sister to his side and kissed her forehead. He was so happy. Viltre had just been well a god'ssend for his family. If only the young one would be delivered back to his care, who had she become during the interim. He stuffed those thoughts back down in his *gasp* actually aching heart. He thought it had turned black years ago, fascinating!
"Variel." He murmured a greeting to their long standing family friend. "And....?"
This was definitely Terrwyn's brother, he had a different...aura than his sister. But the fierce love they had for their respective families was evident.

Variel 3
It was nice to see that the twins had not changed at all. The girl bright and sunny, remembering animals way better than people and the brother mysterious and sharp like a newly whetstoned blade. She swore his eyes could pierce a soul if he wanted. Together they were definitely DPS. She had a special sense for that being a creature of melee herself. Fitting to send the father and the aunt of the missing one, fitting that it was these two in particular. She was very grateful that they were on the same side. She was not sure she could even protect her own willowy charge from the pair, one would have taken Xar and one would go after her. A deadly duo, but pleasant enough and exactly who you would want on the same team, they were also practically family.
"Aye Reillan's first cub or one from the first litter I suppose." She could handle being a cub, she had teeth.

Viltre 3
A glance back to the Oban redhead at the answering holler. They'd clearly got someone familiar, at least. This only became more evident once they got in clear eyesight of the complementary pair. Such an open pair were not difficult to begin reading, at least for Viltre. The initial measure he got of them came as no surprise. For all the warmth that shone from the one, and the hard edges framing cracks in the other, this was not a pair he wanted to offend. Why am I reminded so strongly of Father? Auntie Nao's stories, maybe? If these two weren't Thalassa's close kin, he'd cook his reed hat, slap it between bread and eat it. (By coincidence, this was a real sandwich from the Oban wars: the Duke of Sulubri's Bet.)
Regardless, with with everyone on the same peaceable page, the approach went unhindered. Indeed, the woman in yellow went and got up to come closer, heavy stick in one hand and what looked to be meat in the other. Ther other drew up with her, more warrior-built. The mask he wore engaged as smoothly as breathing, meeting and holding Ushi's gaze and holding it for a few moments. The cheeky little grin he wore might've helped as well. "Viltre. Take it you're Ushiwa? Afraid I can't guess your name, Miss; Thalassa only gave two more."
Kavensei's green gaze fell on the campfire and the warbeast laying beside it, horned head keeping an eye on the newcomers. Especially their mount. "Shall we discuss here, or head elsewhere? Can't say I'm picky about delivering good news more than once."

"...Good thing you came along. I clean forgot about that." Sheathing her knife, she then reached up, at once returning the hug and scritching a bit behind her twin's ear. She'd told Sae about some of his favorite spots before, and it showed. As much as she'd needed mending, her brother hadn't gone unscarred. And there was only so much his sister could do to sew that back up. Once they'd got close enough to speak without shouting, the stocky woman kept her gaze on the dark janarim, never quite keeping eye contact. Never challenging, just a friendly curiosity, seeing if he remembered her. "Get to ya in a minute, believe me. This good boy needs a treat." She walked forward, producing something red and wet from a pouch at her side. They'd made the kill for the evening, and already begun cleaning it out. So when the healer got into headpatting range, she already had the liver on hand for a treat. While Xarthin examined the offered snack, she grinned up at the riders, eyes sparkling almost with their own inner light. "Know you now that you're closer, Var. You grew up nice! Take up with fine company, too!" The glimmer (as it couldn't be called a smoulder) turned on Viltre now. "You've helped us twice now an' I'd conjure you're plannin' on a third before you ever set eyes on us. Gonna need to find a way to start paying that back. Call me Einsol. You're both welcome at our fire, an' our hearth later. Let's not waste the kill; c'mon. We already got a haunch set aside for cookin'."

Ushi 3
"It's what I am here for sister, never fear." His eyes rolled back as she got that one spot that she had taught Sae about too, dratted sisters anyhow.
As per usual his sister beelined it for the critter. The whole family loved animals he was sure.
She always had the best treats too. He smiled as his sister flirted, knowingly or unknowingly that was half of the fun. Good she needed some cubs to chase after too some day. That or she was just so grateful to them for helping their family they would be claimed like all the rest that Einsol tugged into the family. He didn't think she had ever been wrong to snatch the newcomers she had either.
He examined Terrwyn's brother. Now Terrwyn was extrememly smart and looking at the brother he thought that he also might have inherited that trait. Something was not as it seemed here, but Ushi couldn't put a finger on it, whatever it was didn't seem to be malevolent so he put it behind him. Terrwyn's crest sat proudly atop her brothers head, maybe that marked out the smart ones. He wasn't sure. But it might be accurate.
The male held his gaze for a moment, not always the easiest to do when Ushi was in full feather so to speak, but this was a er, friendly meeting so there was no need to raise his hackles. Part of what made him so deadly was his self control, honed over hours and hours of training.
"Now would be a good time to discuss." His inner self was hungry for news of his lost daughter, this he let show in his eyes.

Variel 4
She let herself relax in the saddle. Male posturing and all that, but well Einsol wasn't male and there was a certain sparkle about her that caught the eye. She was real pretty, dark like the shadows on a moonlight sea with a smile to blind them like the dawn.
Variel was not blind.
"You turned out not so bad yourself Einsol, good breeding if I daresay myself, took after both of your beautiful parents I see." All the best things in her opinion., Hybrids were so neat.
She scooted up closer to VIltre's butt and grinned at Einsol. Biting his shoulder gently as Kynin had taught her. He was hers but she might be willing to share.

Viltre 4
His own smile couldn't light up a room the way this brightly-dressed woman might. ...But his was so well-polished an expression that it could mirror and reflect some of that right back. The redhead had leaned forward and down to clasp hands with each in turn, eyes merry. "Pleasure to finally meet you both!" At first glance, these two couldn't be more different. One might as well have glowed from within, while the other did a passable impression of a person-shaped rock. A moments study began revealing depth immediately for both twins. For once, someone it took concentration to read. Not for the first time, Viltre applauded his sister's good taste in lovers. It had got them related to such interesting people.
His forward lean had left him open to Variel's affectionate blandishments. For some little while he shut his mouth and let the women speak. And an interesting exchange it was already. The bite in particular brought his head around to stare a moment. She'd never done that yet. But then, she'd never had someone flirting(?) so openly with the both of them before. "Well. You're not wrong; scheming's a habit by now. Terr's probably poisoned my name for you by now, called me a terrible prankster no doubt...
As they headed back towards the little camp, Ushi's distant brother brought him up to speed on the current information. "Our targets were last seen in the Oban capital. Southern sea travel isn't in their options anymore, as their operation went and pissed off the local smuggling rings. If they've left since, they did it by land, and we can track that. We've got some feelers out that way, still waiting on local confirmation." If all else falls through, I might tap the family network. Should be safe enough to try there. Oba's always been more Father's scene than Mother's. A pause, and in a rather softer tone, "Still don't know where she is. I'm sorry. The rings alter the official shipping records twice or thrice a year to stop suspicious numbers piling up. Only know our men came back to port without her."

Einsol 4 Einsol giggled to herself as the red-brown organ disappeared from her palm, vanished into strong jaws and heavy teeth. With Xarthin happily licking his chops and cleaning her hand for good measure, the healer took the reins and began to lead. He did remember her after all! As did his rider~ They were off to a good start already. An old acquaintanceship to rekindle, a fresh one made, and they hadn't needed to hurt anyone today. ...Except for the kill earlier, but food was different. "Shouldn't I? Just look at 'Kina an' Honi. 'Course I was gonna grow up pretty." From someone else? Arrogance. From this woman? Still arrogance, yes, but without the smug tones of inflated ego. Her pack's excellence, to her eyes, was easily observable fact. A wink tipped back towards Variel all the same, since it'd been a nice thing to say. And she reognized a claim when she saw it. Not that it changed much. "You two? Da gets mail, 'time to time, an' keeps us up on things. Heard you were out gettin' good with a spear, Variel, an' stakin' a name out for your own. An' Terrwyn, Viltre? She's said a bit on tricksiness. Said you were a scribe, tho'. Now how's a scribe come to need the arm of a capable lancer, then?" All this light and laughing remained when their guest began his report, but her eyes shifted focus to her brother. Rather than loose the reins or stick, she stepped in to bump his shoulder with her own. Staying there to keep pressure on, she spoke with another warmth. "No fear, Ushi. They'll know where she went. She'll be back."
