Prompt 11 (Cracked) : There’s always a surplus of homemade candy and treats this time of year, and you’ve happened across some gorgeous hard candy. Maybe you picked it up in a shop, or maybe it was a gift, or something you found at a holiday party. It’s sweet, it’s savory, it’s just about anything you could want in a candy. Except, you bite into it too hard and hear a crack. You don’t feel pain, but it seems impossible that this was from the candy and not a tooth cracking. If you check, you’ll find no damage, but for the next few hours, you hear the sound of cracking ice–constantly. When you step on a sidewalk covered in snow, when you pass a glass window. Sometimes, if you turn fast enough, you see the cracks. When you blink, they’re gone. The sound is jarring and alarming, and sometimes you can feel the reverberations of the crack around. It can be disorienting, and every step feels like you might just crack the surface of the Earth and fall through.

Demetrius was still in the study hall at his college when he realized he was almost the last person there. It looked as though maybe a total of maybe 10 people remained if that, but when he first joined there had been well over 30. Since even on Christmas break his colleges law program was so competitive. Especially around this time of year when it was time to look for internships outside of school. This time of year was every man or women for themselves, it was like a madhouse. Since you truly did not even know if you had friends at this time or if they just wore a mask. For Deme though he didn't really mind much, most of his friends were outside of the schools wall. He found it easier to focus if he had zero distractions and he knew friends in class were always a distraction no matter how much you wanted them not to be. Even though he knew it didn't always matter since after all they all studied the same law. "There is but one law for all, namely that law which governs all law, the law of our Creator, the law of humanity, justice, equity - the law of nature and of nations." As the quote rang through his head he shook his head sending his hair in every different direction.

As he shook his head from all his irrelevant thoughts he took a quick look around and as he looked at happened to glance at the clock. It was just striking 11 am, which wouldn't normally be a big deal but today was the last day to grab gifts before Christmas was here. And Demetrius well he had a lot of gifts to catch up on especially grabbing some things for his best friend. So he quickly realized he needed to hurry up and packed all of his textbooks, notes, computer, pencils, and anything else he brought into a giant backpack. He zipped up his backpack as quick as he possibly could and slung it onto his back. He heard a thump onto his back as he jumped out of his chair and raised out of the door of the study hall.

"What kind of gift could I get him and his family," he thought aloud to himself as he ran on the sidewalk. After all he couldn't just bring one person a gift and not the rest. How mean would that be. Then all of the sudden as he was running something blew into his face! It was a flyer of some kind and as he peeled off the flyer he decided he might as well read it before tossing it in the trash. The flyer mentioned a special Christmas popup shop with tons of homemade Candy options and wrapping options galore.

"Now that could work," he whispered to himself as he read the address on the flyer and began heading that direction. The run only took him maybe ten to fifteen minutes since the pop-up shop was surprisingly close by. As he arrived he noticed a very Christmas-like door it was decorated to a tee with lights, garland, and signage. This person definitely went all out and if that wasn't enough he opened the door and Christmas music blasted into his ears. "They definitely love Christmas," he said as he was greeted the second he stepped inside with Merry Christmas. He smiled back and stepped to the first table there were so many treats he had no idea where to start. Honestly, it was a bit overwhelming and so he took the easy way out and went up to the cashier. "I just need something for a large family full of sisters and aunts ect," he said and the cashier nodded with a smile. She ran off and came back with over 5 huge boxes of who knows what. They were all wrapped in gorgeous boxes and tied with shiny ribbon that seemed like it went on for days. "Perfect, thank you!" he said as he pulled out his debit card and swiped. As he went to grab the packages he noticed there was an extra rainbow box, "excuse me this isn't mine." As he said that the cashier just smiled and pushed it towards him explaining it was a free gift for him. "Well thank you so much," he said and with that ran off, out the door, and headed towards his dorm.

"One mission down," he said as he walked for a couple more miles and arrived at his dorm room door. He opened the door quickly since this stuff was heavy and he set it all down on the dining room table in his kitchen. That was when the rainbow gift came tumbling onto the floor. Luckily everything else was safe, and as he bent down to grab the gift he decided he might as well see what it was. So he pulled the ribbon, opened the top of the box, and saw some beautiful looking rainbow round donut hole looking things inside they even had little rainbow sprinkles on them. "Man those look good," he said as he reached inside and grabbed one. Though as soon as his teeth bit in he could hear CRACK. It sounded and felt like his whole mouth was cracking, but when he touched his teeth everything looked fine no cracks or breaks to see.
